[Q] Why can't I seem to get Smart Pause to work? - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshootin

Hey,
I've been messing about with my phone today and have been trying out some of its features, but I can't seem to get Smart Pause to work.
This is the steps I've been following:
Ticking Smart Pause option in settings
Going to gallery
Tapping on a video then selecting Video to view it
Stare at screen
Turn head
Still playing!!
I can get the other eye features to work, but not this? Is there something I'm missing?
Thanks.

Me too. I was trying to show it off.... failed miserably LOL. But that's what I get for trusting stock software without testing it first.

It is a gimmick. It failed terribly for me as well.

Me also, i can use every single feature perfectly but smart pause not even once i could use it! And yes everything is turned on, smart pause won't work with the phone vertically or landscape mode :/

I don't have the device but I was playing with one at the AT&T store yesterday, I filmed a quick video on it and played it back. I tested the smart pause feature about 6 times throughout the video and it worked every time. Not sure if the store phones are set up any differently.

You have to be in a well lit location for it to actually work.

Just tried it again and worked like a charm... Funny thing is this would be useful for YouTube videos, your watching a video and then someone talks to you, the video auto pauses and resumes when you look at the display again.

After some testing i got to the conclusion that it onky works in places with very good lighting!

[Q] Video Call on A500

I tried to video calling my friend using using Fring & Tango, but the video of myself is showing upside down. Can anyone know how to fix this Thanks.
gtalk works perfectly here - perhaps the other apps are messed up..
Oh...U know what. The back camera works fine but only the front camera is messed up and back camera won't be too useful during video calling.
fix: flip the tablet around
That doesn't work either because the video of your friend will be turning upside down. =.="

Why are ringtones quiet when the phone starts ringing?

Whenever I get a call, the ringtone is very quiet for a couple of seconds before suddenly playing at full volume. Increasing volume is disabled, so does anyone know why it does this?

Try checking and unchecking increasing volume a few times in the settings then. If that does not fix the problem you might be able to try wiping all data to do with the phone and sound settings in Settings > Applications..
It was doing it even when new out of the box though, and also when I first installed XXUAMDN, so it's definitely not an app issue or anything. Tried toggling the increasing volume toggle several times too.

So how can I disable that behaviour?

you cant, but i dont know if you can when it is rooted
I'm rooted, so if anyone knows then feel free to share!
This S4 is my first Android phone and i was wandering this also as my phone has always done that for about the first 2 seconds which ive found very strange, never found a way to change it either.
I've had several android phones, but this is the first to do it.
My previous note 2 and the wife's s3 don't he same (as well as my s4).
Unsure if it's an android thing or Samsung thing.
I think it's so the phone ringing when your not expecting it doesn't frighten the living daylights out of you!
Sent from my GT-I9505 using Tapatalk 2
It's definitely not an android thing, otherwise my previous 3 phones would have all done it too and I'd already have had a 5 year head start on learning how to stop it!
Right, just found it's a Samsung and LG thing. Seems you can edit the secphone.apk if you're rooted, or alternatively you can download an app called "disable increased ring" from the play store. With this app you get a persistent notification that it's running, but then if you go into application manager you can disable notifications for it. I tried the app and it works, no root access or custom rom needed.
Flash Omega or Wanamlite ROMs, they have this "feature" disabled

Thanks, just found an app that disables it anyway. What a stupid "feature".
I have this exact same problem on my s3 mini. So it's deffo a Samsung thing... Thanks for posting different solutions
"Disable Increasing Ring" app works fine so far.

No notification sound

Yes.. At time my nexus simply loses its notification sounds.
Media sounds still works just the notifying sound disappears.
And after a reboot it works fine.
Its the 3rd time I've faced such bug.
Has anyone else faced such bug ?

I'm on version M and still having the same problem.
Count me in as well. Mine does the same thing. I wonder if it has to do with the doze features

I switched back to the stock messaging app today and so far it hasn't missed any notification sounds. It may have something to do with 3rd party apps not being optimized for marshmallow. I'm going to try and turn off battery optimization on my preferred messaging app and see if that helps.

WhatsApp, Viber, text messages, calls..
Nothing at all..
Were you in same situation or only messaging app was giving problem?

Yeah I have been having the same problem with the messenger app, Gmail, as well as my 3rd party apps... I also use a moto 360 and that won't notify me either so Idk what's going on... It's annoying though especially with text messages...

For me it seems to be only 3rd party apps. Stock apps are coming through fine.
not sure if this will work for anyone else, but twice now i have had my notifications and alarms silenced. i figured out that both times it was after connecting to a bluetooth decice (once a speaker and once a ear bud) - even though i turned bluetooth off, and it showed as off, it was still trying to send the sounds to the bluetooth device. i turned bluetooth on and then off again and sounds worked.
I have the same issue, and I can confirm that it is bluetooth related for me as well. It seems to happen every time I connect with my car or my bluetooth earphones. I'd have to then turn off/on bluetooth or reboot to start getting audio for alarms and notifications.
FWIW, this doesn't seem to be the only bluetooth issue with this phone(or maybe Android M). I also have an issue with bluetooth causing wakelocks and preventing doze from kicking in (there's a thread on that as well).
I have the same issue and I think mine is related to bluetooth as well. After I started using a smartwatch that syncs with the phone via bluetooth, I started having the issue. Alarms, phone calls, messages etc don't lose sound. I have to turn the phone off and back on in order for notifications to work again. At times, sound from the keyboard of media works, but not notifications. At times media doesn't have any sound neither. I don't know if it's the Nexus 6P's problem or Android M's but this blows.
I'm having same issue but I don't use Bluetooth. Randomly lose all notification sounds. All stock apps, even ringtone and key sounds. Rebooting phone resolves it. But just now it's happened again, I then went into settings, sounds, and turned key sounds off then on again and bingo, all notification sounds are back to normal.

Same thing for me. I couldn't even go into system settings to modify the sound. It just hangs and eventually crashes. A reboot always fixes it. I did use bluetooth. Any notifications with vibration still vibrates though. Not rooted, or running exposed.
Just a quick update from my post earlier. Since I posted regarding my same issue I have since disabled the nexus imprint lock screen, which I had setup to unlock my phone, and a day has passed and all is good. Maybe a coincidence, I don't know but I've got all my notifications working as they should be.

Same issue here... This needs to be fix asap. Can't risk my alarm not having sound.

Update to my complaint, it still fails after sometime even when I don't use bluetooth.
Attached screenshot indicates it's related to the media storage permissions maybe?
This is pretty bad since I won't hear my calls or any other notifications!

Same here. At first I thought it was related to bluetooth but after disabling bluetooth and rebooting the phone, getting notifications and the losing them again, I can say that the issue doesn't seem to be related to bluetooth.
I've missed alarms and of course calls and messages. This blows!

Flip to mute, deprecated? Can't find it anymore

Every other phone I've had has flip to mute. Every time a customer calls me at the butt crack of dawn I'm reminded to ask about this but I never do. I looked everywhere, or so I think. Is it gone? Any alternative?
Thaunks much,
Dave

There is a new feature rolling out call flip to shhhh or something as part of something Google... Dunno when though
I'm sure there is also an app on the play store that would do that for you... And I'm positive you can do it with Tasker but it would require some setup that isn't super intuitive since Tasker does a bunch of things...
This has been baked into so many stock ROMS for years, I'm shocked this isn't in this one. I use tasker and have quite a few configs but I'd rather not have to rely on it for that. I'm not even sure which sensor i'd have to monitor to determine the unit was flipped over rather than just moved in my pocket while ringing.

Yes, missing that also.
Meh just setup proper quiet times via scheduled do not disturb. Takes care of those butt crack of dawn callers.

It isn't always during DND times. There are many times I'd just like to flip the phone. I can mute w/ the volume buttons but for some reason that does not send callers to VM and they just call again.
Dave
I think there is an app that will do this. I had this with the Moto x pure and I got twist for camera working for a time on the ph1via some app. The same app had a facedown silence mode if I recall. Problem is I can't remember what app it was.
Ok I think an app is what i need as I had 3 customers wake me up this AM. I'll google around.
Dave
I use AutomateIt Pro with accelerometer with two separate rules: one to mute on face down and one to unmute on face up; both with a 10% tolerance.
Sent from my PH-1 using Tapatalk
Thanks i tried a similar thing in tasker and I could only get it to vibrate. Audio silent never did anything. It seems since do not disturb is around that that silent feature doesn't work.
