[Q] Apps and APKs to take Advantage of S4's advanced Features. - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshootin

Hi there.
I got a hold of my new S4 yesterday like a lot of you and I'm noticing there aren't apps that take advantage of the advanced features that the Galaxy S4 provides.
I thought I'd start a thread to post Apps that take advantage of things like the ;
barometer, temperature sensor, IR capabilities, etc..

Sensor box
Found a neat program that will give you some sensor data including the Barometer and light sensors...
"Android sensor box" by IMOBLIFE INC.
Anyone seen anything that can be used as a universal remote control? "Peel" really falls short.

Most of the time you will not use any of those features. They are more useful to samsung for its markerting.

Heart rate monitor?

So now that Android 4.3 is out and we supposedly have BT 4 LE support, I'm wondering if anybody has found any good heart rate monitors that work with the Nexus 4. I looked at the Polar H7, but one reviewer has already indicated that it still doesn't work with the N4. So, anybody know of any good ones that do work?
There are already applications that do the trick and they don't have any need of 4.3
Just type heart rate at play store.

Having to hold your phone and keep a finger steadily on the camera isn't even close to being as useful or battery efficient as bluetooth connecting to something strapped to your arm.
Yeah I need something that monitors heart rate while I am cycling for several hours, running, or otherwise working out. Something compatible with strava or edmondo that isn't expensive as hell (the Polar H7 is the cheapest while being accurate - but it is reported incompatible with the N4.)
Try Runtastic Heart Rate. Its works really good!!! I been using it for along time. You dont need any extra accessories. Just put your finger on the flash light; it will do the rest.
FEATURES:
* Measure your pulse with the camera on your smartphone
* See your HRM results in a graph
* Variety of different, instant measurement types: resting HR, maximum HR, and HR before/after cardio
* Upload, store, and analyze your exercise results on the runtastic fitness site, www.runtastic.com
* Share your HRM results via your social networks: Facebook, Twitter, Google+ and E-mail
Ugh...what's the best way to explain to several people that you don't want to hold your finger on your phone for several hours while you ride your bike?
While being fantastic the new Bluetooth standard is also very buggy and a battery hog, so using one for a few hours along side another athletic assistant app would result in either a dead battery or a dead network board due to the heat.
Although rudimentary the light method is very accurate and easy to use, just use benchmarks and stop to take it rather the stream of data you are looking for.
Your best bet is to get a real heart rate monitor that saves to SD so you can compile at home, trying to get an accessory for a phone will only cost you twice as much for half as much efficiency.

Runtastic Bluetooth
I've been using the Runtastic Smart Bluetooth Monitor for the last few weeks and I really like it. I don't notice the strap hardly at all when I'm running. The app is great too and mine came with a free upgrade to Runtastic Pro.

Do you use Note 10.1 specific features (spen, multi window, etc)? How?

I have my Note 10.1 for around 6 months now, i use it daily and i'm happy with it regarding smoothness and performance but i can't find use for it's specific features. I use it like i would any other android tablet.
Some of the specific features i'm talking about which i don't use:
Spen: it looks interesting as concept but it doesn't feel pratical to use. it's much more intuitive to use your finger instead of going for the pen.
The pen feels like an unnecessary extension of your finger.
I tried drawing but it was a disappointing experience, it doesn't track fast enough like you would on normal paper, it's much too slow, i have to draw in slow motion or it won't keep up.
Maybe it is useful for some handwritten notes but due to the drawing lag and the fact that the keyboard prediction is quite good i end up preferring to just use the keyboard.
multiwindow (or apps in hovering windows): it looks powerful and interesting but i've yet to find a use for it. I use several windows in a PC usually but it doesn't feel pratical to do it in a tablet, the screen size/resolution isn't big enough, you get 2 small windows and end up not enjoying properly either app.
Please help me make better use of my note, i'm happy with it but i feel i'm waisting some potential uses.
Hi,
I use the spen every day to take notes in meetings or at my desk. the snote application is for me unusable but with the right app (in my case Lecturenotes) it replaced completely my paper notebook in the job. Together with syncing the notes to Evernote or own server or sending handwritten notes with drawings per mail directly to collegues it fit's all my needs.
As mentioned, I don't see any lagging using the pen. and true, using the pen only to control the device does not make sense at all.
Rgds
Sven
I bought the Note 10.1 primarily for notes, reading, work and browsing and I'm happy all round
I use the S Pen all the time and was one of the reasons I bought a Note and not a Nexus for example. Is your S Pen calibrated well? Mine has no problems with lag and can keep up with my writing with no problems at all. Maybe use a different tip?
I also use multiwindow which is nice for taking notes and browsing at the same time for example. Or watching a movie while working (if there's no boss around lol).
I got because I needed a 10" tablet for my whip and the note 10.1 had multi window.. I use this tablet as my main device.. I use cm10.2 because it seems a bit faster than stock and I came to the conclusion that multi window is pointless.. it doesn't work like it does on a PC were I can drag and drop
Sent From Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 [N8013]
I only use the multi-window occasionally. However, the stylus? I used to use that every day when I still had classes, but now that I'm doing all research and teaching, I only use it for quick and dirty calculations. I used to draw with it as well, but I don't have that time now.. :/
(What app are you using? I find that certain apps don't seem optimized for the spen, so the tracker does lag for those.)
tried lecture notes yesterday, looks clean and simple but i still feel the tracking lags a bit if you move the pen faster. if i write as i would on a normal paper it can't keep up completely. I tried the character recognition "keyboard" and it also fails to recognize most of my handwriting, might be a bit my fault too.
Anyway, still happy with my note, but i guess having spen or multiwindow won't be a requirement when i upgrade my tablet.
Otoh it seems that if choose to stick with samsung the new note 10.1 seems the only way to go because the galaxy tab3 has last year's screen resolution.
From your needs I would think that nexus 10 would be more than sufficient. Samsung too.

I agree. If you're not going to use the S-Pen, then why not get a Nexus 10 or even a Samsung Tab2/3? The only reason we put up with the dated resolution of the screen is the S-Pen, since there's no alternative (at least running Android).
Pretty much done away with notebooks here. I'm still torn between lecture notes and s note. I like certain features of each. I do find handwriting recognition more bother than worth. S pen IS the big advantage of the note. Definitely worth it to me.
Bottom line is my. Note is everywhere I am.

I also use SPen everyday. I bought this tablet for taking notes during meetings. I'm fully happywith it.
I use the multiwindow feature when I need several functions at the same time. For instance, I can open SNote with a calculator or internet navigator. But honestly, it's not my favourite feature.
I plan to move to another ROM since Samsung is not prompt to send us a new one. I would like to setup accounts. However, I would like to keep SNote ...

I would have considered the Nexus 10 if it was sold in my country (which is not), but, even so, i read that the Nexus 10 might not be as fast/smooth as the Note due to the higher resolution.
Spen: Everyday in university
Multiwindow: Never
IR Blast: Never
Drawing: I am really, really bad at drawing stuff, so never
I recommend to everyone whose usage of the device matches the above, flash an AOSP based rom!

What do you mean exactly with hovering? Of course the software is _able_ to detect the spen hovering, because this is a hardware feature of the digitizer. For example: In lecture notes you can use hovering to scroll the page, that's because the developer chose to get the signals of the hardware (spen and digitzer). Samsung chose to integrate the hovering feature in the system api, so that you can scroll in menu's etc. Most of the AOSP rom's (i am using cyanogenmod, look at my signature) will not include the hovering in their system, but nevertheless it's a hardware feature that is enabled, but the software needs to use it. I hope you can understand this.
To palm rejection: It's nearly the same, with the little difference that the touchscreen always shuts down if the spen is near it. I don't know if it's even possible to write software that brakes this feature.
But I can assure you: On cyanogenmod the writing with spen is much more fluid, smoother and feels much better than on a tw based rom.

thanks. that's what i wanted to know. I'm assuming pressure sensitivity works too then with apps that support it (i believe ezpdf does support this, at least it did when i tried in the store on the stock model)?

Sounds good. But which tool are you using for taking notes? I guess you don't use anymore SNote, right?

That's not possible, there is no S Note on AOSP roms, it needs Toichwiz API /framework. I am using lecture notes, but many people also use papyrus. Your call.

[Q] IR Hardware for Tape Measure?

Hi,
Is it possible, with the G2's IR hardware, to use the device as a IR tape measure? By having an "IR Blaster", I assume that it doesn't have the receiving capabilities needed for that function? I'm aware of the app that uses the camera's function to measure using a reference object or target, but I was thinking more along the lines of the device you might see a contractor or appraise use to measure rooms in a house. While I'm wishing, a IR thermometer app for grilling season would be nice too. I'm having trouble searching/finding any definitive answers.
It does have receiving capabilities. .hence the universal remote
Sent from my LG-D800 using Tapatalk 4
Universal remotes mean that they are preprogrammed for different makes.
The G2 does have an IR receiver in addition to an IR blaster, hence the reason why you can clone a remote as opposed to picking one from the database. Problem is, it would be horribly inaccurate if you tried to use it as a measuring device. The transmitter isn't that strong, and the receiver hardware probably can't handle the precise measurements that would be needed. It would be like using a camera as a measuring device -- it's a novelty more than something you really want to rely on.

That's a shame. As a Realtor, this would be a killer function - taking photos and measurments of a home with the same device.

[q] sgs5 oximeter

Anyone know why oximeter capabilities are not made available in the sg5? This is a unique and truly useful feature. Not only is it possible but Sammy has made it available in the note 4.
The heart rate monitor is a gimmick. All you need is a finger and access to the wrist and in 15 secs you can figure heart rate. But pulse oximeter, that is a truly unique and useful tool. Say grandpa suffers from chronic lung disease. He develops a respiratory infection, you measure his heart rate and oxymetry. It makes a huge difference if his pulse ox is 95% vs 85%. In the second case your provider will likely direct you to the emergency room without delay. That's one example. I can fill a page with scenarios.
Anyone know if this will ever be unlocked for sg5 as in note 4?
If not someone should come up with a pulse ox app for the sg5. I would pay money for it.

possibly maybe hardware related
EDIT: just read up on the hardware.
either samsung left out the red LED needed. or itll come with lollipop
The Galaxy S5 heart rate monitor is actually a "Pulse Oximeter" CSP package by MAXIM; but it doesn't measure blood oxygen levels...
it can't or won't.
The pulse oximeter in the note 4 does measure SPO2. I would be surprised if they use different hardware. But maybe your right.
neither lollipop nor .apk enable SpO2 on a S5 SM-G900FD

http://www.techinsights.com/uploade...Wearable-Wellness_Deep_Dive_Sample_Report.pdf shows a simple tool using a similar chip.
The following thread exposes how it works in the S5:
http://tech2yantra.blogspot.be/2014/04/galaxy-s5-heart-rate-monitor-aka-pulse.html
I understand from readings on XDA that S5 comes with a Pulse Oximeter CSP chip by MAXIM (see source above).
Some propose a .apk to enable what seems to be desabled in some countries:
cf. http://repo.xposed.info/module/com.john.xposed.globalshealth
The following link shows the "problems" countries:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/xposed/modules/mod-global-s-health-enable-s-health-t2993601
My S5 model Android 5.0 and S Health 4.1 and the installed .apk do not deliver SpO2 unless I made a mistake somewhere.
I can only make guesses as to why it does not work (15 mai 2015 - after Lollipop update).

Are there any Android Wear apps that can display sensor data from my Nixon Mission?

I just got a Nixon The Mission which has all these sensors but I guess Nixon didn't think to include an app that could make use of all of the data obtained from them.
I can see all the raw sensor data using Aida64, but it's pretty clunky and has a lot of sensor data I don't really care about.
Are there any sensor apps for Wear out there that can present all of this data in a reasonably nice fashion? Thinking of something along the lines of an outdoor app or something that will just show the barometric pressure, altitude, temperature, humidity, compass bearing, etc. all using the onboard sensors (not GPS or internet).
Thanks.
Hi, i've had to handle the same kind of questions when i got the Mission myself. I wish Nixon, for the high price tag of the watch, wouls have developed a fes apps which would take advantage of the sensors, unfortunately they didn't (suckers)!
For altitude i use Altimeter Wear
For Barometer ToolX
Haven't foumd any app that uses the thermoter
Speedometer wear app uses the phone's gps for some reason so u can't track speed without your phone around...
I guess nobody other than us cares as i'm the first to reply...
---------- Post added at 09:20 AM ---------- Previous post was at 09:14 AM ----------
Oh, BTW, super important, in order to get right measurments, MicLock should stay open otherwise the sensor is locked up and won't be able to work properly, i wish it was clearly explained in the user guide...
I use an app called wrist sensors (a russian app) it reads all sensors.
Best regards Niels

Thanks for the suggestion, liked wrist sensors. I wish it has a better GUI it could be the best app on the market with a proper GUI that use the data recorded.
Just downloaded the app and seems to work well. It would be nice if it had a more user friendly interface but tbh I'm glad someone is finally letting me use the thermometer on my Nixon mission [emoji16]

Finally after a huge search I was able to find a decent application to take advantage of my Nixon Mission sensors.
The application is called "Sensors Master Military" and uses the Barometer, Thermometer and Altimeter of my Nixon, works with a third part application to be able to use the compass.
When Sensors Master Military it is used for the first time you will be invited to install the compass, it's freeware.
This application Sensors Master Military is paid but the amount is quite reduced and it is worth the investment.
The same developer also has the "Mission Temperature" application that only provides the Nixon Mission temperature, the application is freeware.
I hope I have helped!
