N4 resolution discrepancy! - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey,
So my phone is a 303k and has a resolution of 768x1184 as opposed to the advertised 768x1280. This is extremely weird!
What are your guys resolutions?
Here's an app to check your resolution
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.MTMDevelopers.ScreenSpecs
Thanks for looking!

Its because of the Virtual keys I believe.
Sent from my Nexus 4

It is 768x1280, but apps only have 768x1184 available to them because the on screen buttons take up some real estate.

The same as you

also chrome reports the wrong results when using what is my resolution

Definitely the navbar. Expanded desktop shows 768x1280.

Am I the only one who sees obvious pixelation in some widgets? The analog clock for instance doesn't seem to be in HD as some of other stock google widgets, I really hope they upgrade this

DUDE stop posting everywhere your phone is FINE its cause the nav bar

Guys!!! Its not the nave bar! Its the chrome browser or the app. Check the difference between chrom and aosp browser. I'll put pictures.

I actually notice a lot of pixelation. That was primarily my main concern of checking the resolution
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda app-developers app

It's from the Nav bar eating up pixels.

If you use PIE you can regain those pixels or you can even shrink it on certain ROMs.

Whoops, accidentally thanked your post. That was a complete mistake. What exactly is the problem here? Are you saying that you think your screen is not 1280x768, or is the text all pixelated? Because you just seem to be complaining about numbers on the screen, while you're having no actual problems with using the browser. Could you specify your exact problem, other than the fact that the numbers are off?

He's complaining about both I think. Because he thinks the screen is defective, he's starting to notice micro-imperfections, and attributing them to a messed up display. The display does have the full resolution advertised, which you're able to fully utilize in apps that support fullscreen mode, like some video applications. The nav bar is just part of the package, but there's no real dishonesty in the advertising or anything.
The reason you have the difference between Chrome and stock Android browser is because Chrome has a pseudo-fullscreen mode now that hides the address bar automatically.
Don't worry man. Your screen is just fine. Be happy that you have a Nexus 4. It's quite an extraordinary smartphone.

Lots of people on xda are jerks nowadays.
Don't know why people tend to be jerks in the q&a forum which is supposed to be quite noob friendly.

For those that prefer using the phone's browser over the XDA app

I made a request to get a dark theme added to XDA and was thinking that if enough people showed interest it might get the ball rolling. The purpose behind this is that a dark theme would improve our battery life as I'm sure all of you know how these screens work.
Before the peanut gallery chimes in, I have no interest in using the XDA app.
Well the premium app has a black theme, have you tried that?

Your in luck, this has already been done. I don't have the premium app, but I am using the dark theme. Just go into settings, it is there.
:facepalm
Forget I even said anything
edit: Just so nobody takes the above comment wrong: I DO NOT LIKE USING THE XDA APP. I want to add a dark theme to XDA's UserCP options.
I'm not sure why you would want to request a feature you wouldn't use, but more power too you..
I originally opened this thread because I was curious to know why someone would rather use the web broweser instead of the XDA app. So whats the pro/con?

Where are you getting the idea that I wouldn't use it?
I just like the browser version better. I have it as a bookmark in my LP dock pop up which takes me directly to general or development. With the Miran browser I have other forums in different tabs so I can go back and forth between them easily. Its harder for me to navigate the app than it is to navigate the browser. Also when people reply using the app, 90% of the time it gets put in the quote box and and looks like and an empty post when in fact the reply is jumbled in with someone else's post (see post #4 as an example). The only benefit the app has to me is that the text is formatted a little better for legibility but that can be fixed in the browser by simply double tapping the page and zooming in.
This is how I'd like it to look like.

[Q] Can someone do a vĂdeo with Nexus 7 with tablet UI mode?

Can anyone do that? Like a little review.
I would like to see the notifications and the lancher.
I was hoping for the same thing a few hours ago but couldn't find anything. Basically just wanna see how the notification expansions work and how fluid the os is in tablet mode. Probably comparable performance but I just wanted to make sure xD
I would also love to see this
so no one is able to do this? I came searching again and was disappointed
I would love a video of that too. Please can someone make one?

But neither of them have video reviews of it running stock tablet UI with the DPI change mod. They both have it running the 213 dpi, hybrid UI instead.
Aww seriously guys it can't be this hard to get something like this done. :s I'd gladly do it but I don't have the device.

I think you are going to confuse people.
The Nexus 7 does run in Tablet UI mode - only the home screen is hybrid.
What you want is a video of the tablet running with the DPI mod.

If you want to get technical then yes it is running in tablet mode, with a Hybrid Launcher BUT I still believe it's hybrid UI since even while in apps, you still get the hybrid/phone-like softkeys and notification bar.
Yes I would like a video of a nexus 7 running the DPI mod and showing a brief overview of menus, opening apps and notifications.

How much would you miss tablet UI?

Apparently it's going. I will really miss it. I don't think there is any need for two thick black bars on a 7 inch device. I like having the extra space and I like the aesthetics of the tablet UI, especially with a reduced nav bar. I don't know why they are removing tablet UI and if the devs can do anything about it. I hope they can! Will you miss it too or is it just me?
Edit: Turns out it's just a rumour, phew!
Most will miss the 10" tablet UI but honestly, I don't expect that I will. The centered buttons are not that big a deal and the "Odd" way the Nexus 7's notification system lurks around, unobtrusive enough that I probably won't care.
I will be more interested in things like Miracast support and web browsing performance than I will be in the UI changes.

There are a bunch of ROMs with tablet UI actually. I'm using smooth ROM with it and its irreplaceable
I know, I'm on PA, but once the update kicks in the ROMs won't have tablet UI. Correct me if I'm wrong!

Btw where did you see it was removed and are we talking about the 4.2 update?

I thought I would hate it when I first saw it
But honestly, I like it. I was forced to use it for the first month before I rooted my n7, and I got used to it. Then I installed a tabui ROM and imo it doesn't work properly on a 7 inch screen. I know a lot will disagree but I am just sayin
I use the normal phone ui now, its just more consistent and easier to use for me. If I want more screen space, I will remove the bars with 'expand desktop' on the ROMs I use

things i hate about standard nexus 7 UI
no quick access to brightness. in tablet UI i can quickly tap the time in lower left hand corner and adjust brightness on the fly.. cant do that with nexus 7 UI
i hate how i dont get Tablet APPs and instead get the phone app for youtube gmail etc..
those are the only things that make me to to tablet ui..
if i could have quick access to Brightness AND native tablet youtube and gmail apps in the standard nexus 7 UI then id be fine.
i really do love the expanded youtube app in tablet UI 4 nice rows in portrait mode compared to phone youtube app. yuck.
Yea the tablet mode is supreme. If it doesn't "work" right then it isn't implemented right. EOS has it so stupidly simple that it is a godsend. You can enable/disable it on the fly and it doesn't screw with your other apps. Just combines the bars into 1.
The notification pulldown menu on the stock UI is horrible. Needs fullscreen or something. Looks tacked on like an afterthought.
I will be disappointed once 4.2 hits and it goes away. Remember tablet UI has to be present to unlock it. Google may remove it completely to streamline their OSs.

It's all over the place in the ROMs threads but there is a discussion kinda starting here in the PA thread:http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=33692765 . Reading this again there seems to be some uncertainty about it. So that's something I guess...

Some questions before getting Nexus 7

Hi, I'm getting Nexus 7 on Christmas, and I would like to ask some questions.
How's tablet mode with this tablet?
Any defects which are popular?
Are any game lagging? (I will play a lot I think)
If your on 4.1.2 you can change it to tablet mode or with a custom ROM. Mine has minor screen lift. Don't mind since I have accidental. And gaming is awesome!

There are many people having defects.. but you exchange it untill you get a perfect one LOL
About tablet mode, I just tried it and I don't know which one I like most... I highly reccomend you to hide navigation screens and top bar, so you can get use of your screen at 100% and with gmd gestures you can go back forward recent applications move directly to homescreen etc...

Jus run through the settings one by one and deselect anything that sounds like it might waste battery. Qslide, knock on, all nice touches but both waste that extra bit of juice and I can do without.
Enjoy

A he never asked that. He asked what brightness do YOU have it on. You do know people do this all the time. Just look into monitors at Hard forums. People love to know all the settings people use. People will say they get the best battery life with.. and then post.
