10 things to try after successfully rooting Xperia Z - Xperia Z General

So today I have recorded a video and compiled a list of MODs and apps that I thought were most useful to have after successfully rooting your Sony Xperia Z.
So here is my youtube video:

Yeah, I don't understand how it works but for some reason whenever I got the navigation and notification bar to disappear I just flashed the softkey mod and it appeared again . Hopefully someone more technical than me will make a use of it and design a better fix.

Big thanks for sharing this mate! Using a couple of these mods now, and that Greenify app is AWESOME. No idea how I haven't heard about it before

hi shem2409,
ok. 2 things:
- that is most probably my fault but the softkey_...._black.zip also gives you a black background for both, status and navigation bar. I could have been more descriptive in my post... sorry =)
- Ticklefish's Black status+ notification bar mod should give you in addition this:
Ticklefish said:
I've also changed the background of the toggles on the notifications screen to black as well. Looks nice, huh?

but since both mods change SystemUI.apk they are going to overwrite each other. and if you flash the softkey mod, the black background of the toggles should be gone? can you confirm that? (the bars will still be black - since you flashed the softkey_black.zip)
and there could be a problem when doing mine and ticklefishs mod in the opposite order: I've put the ".odex file" into the SystemUI.apk, so it runs with odexed and deodexed roms - but it deletes the SystemUI.odex during installation (this is needed so the one from inside the apk is taken by android). Since ticklefish's mod does not have that "odex file" included (it's actually "classes.dex" when it's inside an apk), it will not work if you install his mod after the softkey mod...
so as far as I can tell from here (I haven't tried it out - just have looked at the files), step 5 is overwriting the changes made in step 4.
cheers and thanks for the video tutorial!

If you were to flash smaller soft keys, would games and apps scale correctly or would the image just be stretched? So right now if the soft keys occupy 100 pixels in height, and was changed to 50, would games use the extra pixels? Would it be stretched to fit or would it run at a higher resolution? Or would there be a dead space?

I checked in a couple of games and the bar remains smaller in the games, so I guess the game is stretched to fit the extra screen space.

Advanced reboot menu needs a deodexed rom so I wouldn't advise flashing it

Thanks for that information. I will add it to the video. I am actually on a deodexed stock rom and it worked fine for me.

I have modified the information in my post to account for what you thought me. Thank a lot for that. Tbh I always flashed one after the other and never even checked that flashing small softkeys on their own would do the job.

After TWRP backup I would install, Titanium backup, and do a backup of all the apps and settings, then install an optimised ROM, then 4 and 5 are covered in most cases.

If someone is on locked bootloader there is a limited number of ROMs available at the moment and tbh I haven't found one with smaller softkeys yet. As far as I am concerned the only one for locked bootloader available is the one in the link under my video. I could be wrong though.

Well, flash the smaller keys separately.

I have added the new MOD to add a background to the notification bar to the list.

[MOD] Font Changer v1.4 (24/09)

Instructions in this thread only apply to the old 1.4 version which works with S-ON. Nothing from this thread is needed for the newer Market versions.
With the release of the Market versions (free and paid) I have created a newer thread in the general app section of XDA forums. Those versions work with S-OFF and have many additions and fixes. If you have any issues with those versions, please head over there. LINK. Otherwise stay here as I will still be providing support, but no more updates for the old one.
Description
This is a simple update and application which creates a symlink from /system/fonts into /data/local/fonts for the regular and bold font used by Android (sorry, no Arabic and others yet). The update just makes the necessary changes on the partition, and the application allows for fairly simple switching of the fonts. The update comes with some fonts already, but they can be added manually as well (read more to see how).
- Inspired from the Galaxy S
Requirements
recovery
root
busybox
also reported to be working on a Motorola Droid with CM6
Installation
do a nandroid backup first, just in case
flash fontchanger_update_basic*.zip (doesn't contain any extra fonts, so they will have to be added manually) or fontchanger_update_basic*.zip (contains lots of fonts, but requires ~15MB of free space during installation) in recovery
install FontChanger*.apk on your device
and you're ready to change the font now!
How to Add Fonts
Fonts need to be in TrueType (.ttf), and to ensure a smoother ride you should have two files. One for the regular typeface, and the second for the bold one. If you have just the regular one, the overall look may not be so pleasing and also it may cause a force close too.
Make sure that both fonts have the same common filename (and no spaces please), but append "bold", or "bd" or "bi" at the end of the filename for the bold font. Otherwise the application may not detect the fonts correctly. So for example:
Font.ttf and Font-Bold.ttf, or Font.ttf and Fontbd.ttf, and so on.
Once that is done you can push the files with adb to /data/local/fonts/ or /sdcard/.fontchanger/ (if you moved the fonts to external storage in the settings). Another way is to place the fonts on your SD card and then just move them using Root Explorer. Now just refresh the application and the new fonts should be there.
How to Remove
remove Font Changer from your applications
go into recovery and flash fontchanger_remove_defaultsense*.zip
Note that at the moment the fonts will get restored to the ones used in the stock Sense ROMs. So if you had previously used a theme like NexTang, which uses its own font, then you will have to reapply the update to get the same font back (something that I'll work on).
Known 1.4 Bugs
force closes sometimes (try making font names start with a capital, make sure the SD card is mounted on the phone, try to avoid single fonts and spaces in font filenames)
font sorting

Didn't know about that before, but thank you. I'll take a look at it and add the fonts once I'll have the time
I'll be going on holiday for 5 weeks on Friday, so I made this application really quickly to suit my needs and also published it in case it might be of use to others too. But I'll see what I can do in the next two days.

Updated to v1.1. Main changes are that more fonts were added (thanks to Che123) and some minor fixes and UI changes. Remaining previews for the other fonts might come in the next day or two, or after my holiday.

This is awesome! Very easy to use and has some great fonts! Thanks a lot, great mod!
For the few people that have used this, are there any requests for minor modifications before I leave?
I haven't tried this yet, but I think it looks amazing. Excellent idea and well made. Full props to you.
Sounds like a nice idea, but I've tried it on Roufianios V5 and Pinky 0.4 and each time I flash the zip, at the next boot the system completely hangs up, can't do anything but removing the battery...
Maybe it's a conflict with another app, don't know

I'll take a look at those two ROMs and see if I can find the problem. I use LeeDroid, and I haven't tested it on any others... I guess I should have done that earlier...
This killed my build good, I'm running ieftm's Official 2.2, with: busybox, old A2SD+, OpenVPN (TUN), EXT4 support, 802.11N.
If you're on that rom proceed with caution!
Ok so I'm not the only one in that case... hopefully I did a nandroid backup before trying it !
The remove zip file should remove the symlinks and restore the default fonts (and therefore removing the need for a restore), but I never tried it after a failed font changer update as I didn't encounter one myself.
I'll take a look at the problems later today.
Using DeFrost 2.5a here and it works like a charm!.. Have changed my fonts at least 6 or 7 times as i cant decide. Some previews dont work (can live with that) and the ability to add more fonts (havent a clue how to push via adb yet) would be nice.. Other than that - Top Work!!

The previews are done in a stupid way, and I should do something smarter (with time). You can also copy the fonts to your sdcard and then use Root Explorer to copy/move them to the directory specified in the first post.

I just tried it on a clean Pinky 0.4 and Roufianios V6 install and it worked fine, so I'm afraid I can't reproduce the error. Must be a conflict with something in that case... ~_~ Any errors during the installation of the zip file?
P.S. Uploaded new remove zip which should have some errors fixed.
nice so cool working on od 3.3 with HandOfSean

[ROM][froyo]-di11igaf's Rom v2.5 AND BETA 3.0- 12/16/10

NO LONGER SUPPORTED
ODIN 1 CLICK TO STOCK JF6 BEFORE FLASHING 2.0[/B
Added updated flashable zip to bottom of post which includes some theme updates, apk updates and themes, and some window animations. This post will be hopefully be updated tomorrow with a newer version, and this clockwork flashable .zip should hold off those who waiting on the rom update.
first boot will take a bit.
This is a brand new rom ive been working on for the last few days. Based on newest i9000 froyo release UGJK3 (build date 11/18) and tweaked from there.
-SetiroN 1.5 kernel -user configurable OC up to 1460/default is 1200(go to 1400's at your own risk
-haptic feedback works on ALL buttons
-OC/UV support-voltage control app installed to /data/app
-BLN added and required lights.so lib added to /data/app
-apps and framework deodexed and optimized
-zipaligned

-Big APN file for instant inernet/mms access
-ad-blocking
-AOSP themed lockscreen
-HSUPA enabled -comes with UGJK3 modem(no need to do anything crazy to get 850 working-this modem works as is)

-comes with SWYPE, dark Droid X multitouch keyboard, and samsung keyboard
-Launcher Pro and TWlauncher included in /system/app
it seems like Samsung took some advice from gtg with the twlauncher(never seen the stock launcher this fast or smooth)
-removed some junk apps

voltage control 2.0
cyanogen MMS (switch background color-white/black)
updated maps and youtube
flash player will auto-install

When you apply your lagfix, choose option one when prompted "backup AND restore"
Install Instructions:
as always, its best to flash to stock JF6 with the odin one click downloader.
copy this rom to your internal sd card, and after flashing stock. flash this through Clockwork Recovery. thats it. no need to do anything with the jg8 modem or anything like that.
on first flash, all=ext4 is enabled by default-if you want to use something else, select go back to recovery then go to the lagfix options and enable whatever you want. when your prompted with the options about backing up, i suggest choosing option 1. this will do a backup and restore so you will not lose any apps(the other options you will lose the apps in /data)
credits:

Credit to xcaliberinhand-he made the original kernel for us to be able to use i9000 roms and hsupa modems
Been looking forward to this.
Thanks, I'll try it tonight.

booting up was about 2 minutes on android logo
reboot to recovery then fix it to no rfs advanced ... ( all jfs )
looking good I previously dropped this rom because of modem giving me issue
will set my stuff and report back if needed .
PS why is the Fm app always in your rom ? do you hope it will work at one point ?
looks great yay launcher pro included
you few that download already, here is a better videoplayer.apk. it doesnt fix the problem, but at least youll be able to view your recorded videos from /sdcard-dcim-camera. still looking at problem and trying to find a fix.
from this point on this video player is included with the rom.(reuploaded)

some people have said if that app is removed it can cause problems. if you dont like it, remove it from /system/app.
first boot will take a while as it zipaligns and deodexes.
and btw this rom has nothing in common with my other di11is darkyy rom except my theme. this is my own base.
Ive been running your darky rom 2.0.1 for a day with the jk3 modem. Downloading now to check out the CM mms. I hope its the one with the notification vibration types like multiple long.

My home button didnt work either, not sure about lock screen. Flashing back to stock now.
My home button worked fine. hmmm, also I can confirm the video player.apk in the first post for us couple who downloaded early is letting me play video. But just as stated, can only open it from file manager to view.
great rom so far, its fast. Yes, I did run benchmarks, not that they really matter anymore. can notice the difference in speed when deleting widgets, open anything. It screams, props di11igaf, awesomely quick rom.

preciate it, will try later. problem probably because i apply lagfix "without backup and restore."
ahh ya i bet thats why. not sure why it really would matter(since the problem your describing would be an android.policy.jar problem) but im gonna try it that way and see if it makes a difference. thats the only thing different that we did though.
also i think if you apply the lagfix that way, any apps in the rom that are in /data/app by default will not be restored-at least this has happened to me in the past and why now i always do a backup and restore.
I did a yes without backup and restore, and the home button ain't workin.

[MOD] Modified quickpanel for UCKF1 for sound toggle instead of airplane mode

I have modified the SystemUI.apk for the leaked captivate gingerbread (UCKF1) to toggle between sound on and vibration instead of airplane mode toggle.
Use at your own risk. Backup your systemui.apk before installing this.
It is based on stock theme, you will leave all theme mods
Looks like there is some problem with external sd card with this rom. People are facing it even on fresh installs of the rom without modded file. Make sure you have a perfectly working rom before you try this file. Try rebooting and making sure that your apps on sdcard are still there before you install this app.
It only toggles between 2 modes for now, I am working on getting it to toggle between all 4.
Instructions:
1. download moddedUI.zip
2. apply from CWM
3. Reboot and Enjoy
Thanks to:
1. DG : I pulled the deodexed SystemUI.apk from his cog5 b2
2. cezar: for the deodexed SystemUI.apk from continuum 5.6 which served as the reference for modification
3. dreamsforgotten: for some references in his thread on porting quickpanel
4. Daneshm90: for apk manager
And all other who I might have forgotten.
For Reverting.
1. Download the originalUI.zip file.
2. Apply from CWM
3. Reboot
EDITS:
1. Added acreenshots
2. Changed the SystemUI.apk to the one pulled from my phone just to make sure files weren't mixed up.
3. Tried the file that was uploaded earlier, works perfectly on my phone. Weird that it is acting different on different phones.
4. Gave instructions for reverting
5. Moved to CWM based install

Just finished this on Cog5 Beta2, works great. Toggle is a little confusing as when in Vibrate mode, the toggle does not appear lit, but when in ringer mode, it says "Sound Vibrate" and the toggle is lit.

Samsung switched this around in Gingerbread, so that's the "correct" way for the toggle to look now.

Thanks for clearing that up. I'm sure it will eventually be changed by a dev here.
Edit: And it may just be me, but after I rebooted from doing this, I noticed my Market stopped working. The icon went to a transparent generic apk icon with a sd card in the lower right corner and it said "Application not installed", which is BS cause adb shell and root explorer both said otherwise.

Can you elaborate ? For me in there are 2 modes:
1. Sound: It says "Sound", there is a green speaker and a green bar.
2. Vibrate: It says "Vibrate", there is phone with wiggly lines, and bar is not lit.
Are you seeing something else?

Apparently its a weird thing happening on the latest beta. A few other including myself have had it. Also, I don't have this mod anymore cause I had to reflash beta2. I should just throw it in the zip file.
Sent from my Captivate
If you are reflashing your ROM you can throw it in the zip file. Otherwise you can try to follow my method or use root explorer.
I'll try to make a CWM flashable zip sometime today.
Modded for CWM install
Flashed via CWM on Cog5b2. Fast, simple, and just plain works. Good job! and thanks.
Very nice! The airplane mode thing has been driving me bonkers.
Bumping this bcuz I like it so much!!
works great for me, thanks!

I had this happen to me too on cog5 b2, it was touchwiz 3, I removed touchwiz 3 and put in 4.5 and reflashed fresh, going through all of the motions, it happened to TW4 too.
I also added launcher, by itself and it seems very stable, touchwiz locked up and rebooted the phone a couple times and the applications menu got corrupted. There is a file or a class touchwiz needs' but I have no idea what it is.
Thanks so much. This was the only flaw I had with cog and this takes care of it!

[Q] Typhoon colour changes with 3.8.0

I can't post this question in the Typhoon thread as despite using the Rom for a year I don't post much!
I've searched the thread and not found an answer....
I've been using Typhoon since 3.7.0, and recently upgraded from 3.7.6 to 3.8.0
The colour scheme seems to have changed....battery level and signal strength levels in the notification bar, and the email and messages icons on the home page were green and are now blue!
OK it's a small thing, but I wonder why this has happened, and, actually I preferred the green, so is there somthing I can change to put it back
Obviously the fact I'm asking such a minor question shows what a good Rom it is and all thanks to Tyween etc for the work.
Thanks in advance.....

I did an ROM upgrade only.....Noting the post from Walidhazem above stating it is a 7.2 Vs 7.1 thing, I wonder what caused you to maintain the Green?
I don't use an sd-ext partition....
What do you mean by "restored data"?

after you take the full backup in cwm, do a wipe data / factory reset(in cwm) then flash the new version, let it boot clean to the 'welcome to android' screen, then reboot the phone, enter cwm - backups and restore - advanced restore - select the backup folder - and you can selectively restore whichever partitions you like, in the normal case you restore the data partition, and the sd-ext partition only, meaning the system is the new rom, and the data and installed apps from the old rom get restored and all is as it was before the flash when you reboot into android, but with the new version in the /system partition.
Assuming that you just want to restore it to the old colour scheme, go to the T-Mobile theme Chooser (the icon looks like an Android with 4 colours) and change the theme back to system instead of Cyan

The default theme was changed to cyanbread in 7.2rc, so either you can delete the two lines containing cyanbread/theme/tmobile in your build.prop or just go to theme chooser and select systemUI

If you want, i could extract all the apk's that you want changed back and replace the image files so you get your color back. Lol

Remove ONLY NavBar and get full screen space.

Created a new thread to save you some effort
MUST be on JB 4.1.2 or earlier and rooted, if not
You can get JB 4.1.2 from Telstra, look in Android development and flash it via RSD Lite, You must have an alternative input method (I use gmd gesture control), not free but do not consume any screen space; Now add to the buil.prop at the end (qemu.hw.mainkeys=1) and U will have the status bar but not the navbar and no fc.
I have some issues with menu action (auto hiddes and must retry), solved with cm 10 instead of Telstra ROM, little more batt consumption and no blutooth music at the moment.
UPDATE: No need to use another ROM, In Telstra ROM go to config in Your phone, developer options, and check "Disable HW overlays", Ready!
You can use other ROM (4.1.2+) if U want, I like Telstra Rom cause it have good battery and all features in your cell phone works.
Can you expand on what issues you had after making the edit in rsd lite?
Edit: pls disregard. My tired morning brain was thinking SQL lite.

Where are you finding Telstra 4.1.2 for the Razr HD? I've done Google searches and found lots of dialog but no downloadable file.
How do you go about bringing the bar back up? Is it easy to add it as a power button menu item?
Edit: nvm i see the gesture suggestion now
Edit2: I've found an app called Taskarou, which puts a nav bar menu as a side of screen overlay. Check it out, send very promising.

Yes look good, but I like GMD gesture control because you can use gestures like an iPad or iPhone, no need to a NavBar tu pop up touching some place in the screen, well the matter is we have options
It's not a good thing to do. Next day one, you miss the bar.

Taskarou looks similar to LMT (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1330150). But LMT has some lag and, at times, some bugginess. Does Taskarou tend to run smoothly for you?

Now that 4.1.2 is widely available to Verizon users of Razr HD in the US can anyone confirm that you can simply upgrade to 4.1.2 (retaining root), add qemu.hw.mainkeys=1 to build.prop, and then have the Navigation Bar GO, the System Bar STAY, and no FCs? Because that would seem to be a straight-forward solution to what should be an easy problem to solve. I know this solution CAN work because I did exactly this to my Nexus 7. It removed the NavBar (and kept the System Bar), extended the wallpaper to full screen and resized all the icons. I have never had a Force Close. Every app sizes correctly. I use Button Savior to put exactly the function buttons I want in the order I want them right where I want them on screen (normally right under my thumb). Works flawlessly on the Nexus 7. Hope with 4.1.2 it'll become easy to install on Razr Maxx HD.

Now that Root is available for 4.1.2, I tried this out and it worked.
You have to do the following:
1) Make sure to install LMT or PIE control
2) Make sure to install LMT or PIE control
3) edit build prop file qemu.hw.mainkeys=0
4) reboot
5) edit build prop file qemu.hw.mainkeys=1
6) reboot
You shouldn't get force closes. I'm on stock 4.1.2 rooted
Are you urging the installation of LMT or PIE because one of them is specifically necessary for this remedy to work or because you have to have SOMETHING to navigate with if you remove NavBar? As I said in the original post, I prefer Button Savior, which works fine on my Nexus 7. Would using Button Savior instead of LMT or PIE change the result of the mod?

Nope. I was only aware of LMT and PIE control as a replacement. I'll check out Button Savior.
To my great frustration, this method did NOT work for me. Getting rid of NavBar while keeping System Bar on my Razr Maxx HD is a near obsession with me at this point. Because I was on a leaked version of 4.1.1 and couldn't upgrade to 4.1.2 I used the incredible information available on XDA (thanks to all) to downgrade to 4.0.4, update the version of 4.0.4, update to 4.1.1 and then update to 4.1.2. I used the VZ OTA updates for every upgrade step. Every step proceeded without error. Once I was on 4.1.2 I used the new root for 4.1.2 to establish root, which also went smoothly. Then I followed the directions in the earlier post -- I installed Button Savior so I'd have an alternate means of navigation, installed Root Explorer, edited build.prop to add a new line reading "qemu.hk.mainkeys=0", rebooted, edited that line to read "qemu.hk.mainkeys=1" (no quotes in either case), rebooted. It should have worked. IT DIDN'T! My NavBar is gone, which is good. My System Bar is gone, which is bad. And I still get "SystemUI has crashed"-type errors. After all these steps that's the same result I was getting on a leaked, rooted version of 4.1.1. I'd love to finally get this right. How?

Its
qemu.hw.mainkeys=1
Not hk
Replace it. That may be what is messing your phone.

I am having same issues with my Razr HD. Mine is new which came with 4.1.2 already but I have rooted with the new method, have safestrap installed, all root apps work, root is solid. I followed these steps to a T:
1) Make sure to install LMT or PIE control (** I installed PIE, got it working)
2) Make sure to install LMT or PIE control
3) edit build prop file qemu.hw.mainkeys=0
4) reboot
5) edit build prop file qemu.hw.mainkeys=1
6) reboot
When it says "reboot" I just do a shutdown, wait 10 secs, then power back up (the Razr HD doesn't have reboot option when you press hold the power, only airplane mode and shutdown). I assume that is fine, but tell me if I need to be doing one of those soft resets (i.e. Vol down + power).
System UI FC's after it is set to =1. Not sure why. I have added the line above to the end of the build.prop file (in /system). Does it need to be at the top??
Also, wonder if the launcher has anything to do with it. I am on GO Launcher. I say this since the GO Launcher menu (swiping up on home screen) shows up just below the edge of my wallpaper but behind the wallpaper (so I only see a little bit of the menu then it disappears behind the wallpaper). I can still swipe up to pull a functioning menu in foreground, but this seems odd to me. Anyone else on GO Launcher getting this to work?
Would really love to claim the screen real estate the Nav bar takes up. I can't really understand by Moto/Verizon did this. They say the screen is 4.7, but with the Nav I bet you only have 4.5 or so....
UPDATE: I tried it with Apex Launcher and got same problems. I heard from someone else saying they also have issue on Nova Pro. So it appears not to be linked to launcher being used. I hope something can be found to make this work, having that extra room is SO nice

@india23... can you please enlighten us on the setup of your phone so we can try and understand why this is not working for many others on stock rooted 4.1.2?
- Do you have stock 4.1.2 received from OTA updated and then rooted with motochopper? If not, what do you have?
- What root explorer tool did you use to make edit?
- How did you edit the file, where did you place the new line, any spaces or empty rows before or after that line, etc
- what launcher are you using?
- what are the permissions on your build.prop file?
- anything else you think can help.
There are a number of us on stock OTA 4.1.2 that is rooted and this option doesn't work. It removed BOTH Nav and Status bar, AND there are System UI FC's. Many are saying this is not doable on Stock ROM but you are saying it works for you, so just need to try and understand how and why.
Thanks

I am using the Rogers XT925 version. It is running Stock 4.1.2 and has been rooted using Dan R's motochopper tool.
I used build prop editor from the play store to add the "qemu.hw.mainkeys" property:

I am using apex launhcer.
Hope this answers your questions. If not, I can clarify as needed.
