[Q] Nexus 10 Photosphere and compass / tilt accelerometer drift issues - Nexus 10 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all
Just got my Nexus 10 yesterday, and am wondering if I have faulty hardware, or Photosphere is just unusable on a stock tablet.
I'm not talking about stitching issues with nearby objects; I know about parallax. What I'm experiencing seems to be an issue with the accelerometer / tilt sensor, compass, or both.
So far, out of three Photosphere panos I tried, only the first worked. On the second, after I'd completed only one row of photos, the blue dot for the first picture in the second row suddenly drifted away across the sphere, while I was holding the tablet perfectly still.
I stopped the pano, and tried to start a new one, but when I centered the blue dot, the three circles above the frame flickered wildly and the camera wouldn't capture even the first shot of the pano. I completely cold-booted the tablet, and the exact same thing happened on reopening the camera; it just wouldn't take a photo with the blue dot centered, no matter how I held the tablet or tilted it. That first pano row did stitch correctly, although not a full 360 degrees, probably more like 270 degrees or so.
I did some Googling and downloaded the GPS Status & Toolbox app, then ran both the Compass Calibration and Calibrate Pitch & Roll tools. When I reopened the camera app and tried another Photosphere, it took photos correctly again, and I completed the full first row without problem. I almost completed the second row of photos, but then the same problem occurred again -- right before I reached it, the blue dot drifted away from the correct location. I stopped without that shot, and checked the pano that stitched, but it was completely nonsensical -- shots from the first row appear up in the second row instead, random pieces of house floating in a cloud-free blue sky. (So it's not that a texture tricked the app into thinking the shot belonged there.)
If I leave the GPS Status & Toolbox app sitting, it only seems to show around one degree of compass drift with the tablet sitting perfectly still, although immediately after I started the app it did show the compass jump around by 90 degrees 3-4 times.
I'm baffled by whether this is a hardware or software problem. The tablet is brand-new with little software installed, and isn't even rooted, let alone anything else. It's as stock as stock can be.
Anybody else have similar issues, or any suggestions?

Apologies, I thought I posted this on Q&A, I'm not sure how it ended up in general. If a mod would like to move it, please do!

I just tried this again in bright mid-afternoon sunlight, and the results were comically awful. This time I successfully captured the first row of the Photosphere panorama, although it seemed that the compass might have drifted a little bit in one 360 degree rotation, because the first and last shots were off from overlapping by about half a shot-width.
However, when I started the second row of the Photosphere (this time I went for the row beneath, rather than the row above as I had been doing), it went absolutely insane. I continued turning at the same rate with which I did the first row, but in the time I did less than a half-turn, Photosphere acted as if I'd done closer to a three-quarter turn; the second row's shots were off by more than 90 degrees from the correct direction. I stopped moving at this point and stayed absolutely still, but the blue dot continued to track around as if I was still moving, capturing multiple identical photos and using them to fill in the next 90 degrees or so to complete the second row.
Nobody has answered me yet, sadly. I cannot believe that it is like this for anybody else, or Google would be being lambasted for the hopelessly, absolutely unusably-bad performance of Photosphere.
That leads me to believe it is a problem limited to my tablet -- but how? Looking at GPS Status and Toolbox, both of my tilt sensors report accurately, and the accelerometer *seems* to do so as well. (It shows a zero value when the tablet is stationary.)
The compass is another matter. 99% of the time, it is perfect -- even with sensor filtering disabled, it reads a rock-steady value that changes instantly when I move the tablet. Just occasionally after I move it, it will drift by 2-4 degrees while the tablet is stationary though -- and just one time it changed radically without warning. Having been showing values that stayed steady when the tablet was still, and returned to the same value after the tablet was moved back to the same position, the value suddenly drifted by more like 30-40 degrees without the tablet being moved, and if I moved the tablet around and put it back in the same place, it returned to this new value instead.
It seems like the compass has an intermittent fault, although how I persuade Staples of this I don't know. I guess I can try to show them its complete inability to stitch a panorama, because it took significant effort to get it to show a major issue in the GPS Status app.
Or is there something I'm overlooking, a setting I could change or something that needs wiping or recalibrating somewhere? There's no magnets near the device, btw.

Figured I'd drop a status update here, even though I never got any answers.
The result: Yes, my tablet had a hardware fault. I swapped it out, and the second tablet is rock-solid stable when making Photospheres.
Now, if only there was a way to lock exposure and white balance from the first frame. :-/

I have the same problem. Can you help me descripting your call to Google?

I didn't need to call Google. I took the tablet back to the store and they swapped it, after a very brief description of the problem.

That's muy problem. I live un mexico and a friend of mine send it to me... And i don't have the warranty booklet and i don't unos where or who to call

Nexus 7 Backlight Flicker?

Does anyone else have this problem with their nexus 7? I just got my nexus 7 today but I noticed that the backlight seems to flicker randomly
It doesn't look like much in the video but it is very noticeable and gets annoying when you're reading an ebook like i was.. Here's a video showing the problem.(It's near the end)
VIDEO LINK: h**p://db.tt/28eD0NLk (It happens around 9 second in) (change ** into tt)
For whatever reason this forum would not post a video link to show the problem.. for those who wants to know what it looks like please PM me..
But basically the screen flickers randomly ..
Is this a software problem? Should I go back and get it exchanged?
I don't see a video

I think its different.
Mine flickers no matter which app I use..even on home screen it flickers..
Also this forum has the most ridiculousspam prevention method..5 mins between posts + no link ? WTF
Its because you are new, we get a lot of trolls
Does increasing your brightness help?

I've had a similar problem as well. It seemed to happen to me on auto-brightness when it was changing the brightness level. I can't say for sure though, just my observation.

I havn't tried it yet..do we know if it's a hardware problem or software?
I just got it today so I can still return it if it turns out to be hardware
We really dunno at this point, but we are speculating software since both HTC One X and TF300 had similar problems and were fixed with firmware updates. Also someone switched it three times and all of them had this issue. Also try to run the screen in a pitch black room and tell me if the screen flicker is there. I may have a theory but need some other people to see if their units are behaving the same way as mine.
You can still post the link when you alter it a bit, insert a few *** into it, for example.
I turned mine on as soon as I got hold of it, no flicker, managed to go through and set up things, powered off and left to charged.
Coming back to it the screen would appear to turn on and off randomly, I thought it could be an app controlling a proximity sensor (I have one on my phone and I was EXTREMELY tired!), when I took it into the light there was no change.
I found that shaking it would help it flicker on and off at all intervals but didn't fix it. In the end I just started pushing random areas on the back, just before the issue went away I pressed around the bottom left quarter of mine and haven't had an issue since!
Glad I wasn't the only one with the problem though and would love to actually find out what it was.
Hope this helps!

Try this video,
h**p://dl.dropbox.com/u/13153603/Videos/VID_20120715_100253.mp4
it is using google map and you can see the constant flickering.. It doesn't look very severe in the video but it is actually very noticeable and annoying
I have the same issue with mine. It only seems noticeable when I have the brightness set to the lowest setting and on a page that is predominately white. I don't think it's the proximity sensor though, because it happens both when I set it manually to the lowest setting and when I'm in the dark and the tablet sets the brightness all the way down itself. Hope the next update fixed this, because it's really annoying!

Seems like only a small portion of nexus 7 owners are reporting this issue .. I think I'm going to return mine ...

I first noticed this flicker in a darkened room, so yes, it is definitely something going on. I'll try disabling auto-brightness to see if that matters.
If anyone else has info about this, please share!

I can attest that the flicker is ever present in a pitch black room as well.
Like this?
There are a few videos on youtube, but i cant post links but if you do a search you can find it
I noticed a flickering in chrome yesterday. But only in chrome and only while the page is rendering after it fully renders no more flickering.
Everyone turn off wifi and I guarantee it will go away. It happens when using wifi which makes it hard to believe that a software update can fix it.

Gyroscope problem

Hi guys
I seem to have a problem with the gyroscope on my nexus 7. I only noticed this when playing temple run, the character always veers off to the right. Has anyone else had a problem like this? Is it a known hardware issue and should I return the device or is there a fix for this?
Thanks
I had the issue on one and I have read quite a few accounts from other people too.
I tried all kinds of things to fix it myself and nothing worked permanently.
Returned it for a new one.

Ok thanks, looks like I'll be returning it then. Frustrating through, this is my second nexus already and I only bought the first one 2 weeks ago. My original one had a blown speaker.
This is the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard. Use some other tool to determine if the accelerometer is working, NOT GAMES.
Many games do the accelerometer VERY wrong. I have one game that works on one device but not on two others, no tilt at all on one, the other it's 90 degrees off.
Install this and find out: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.miian.android.sensors
It takes about 10s to detect the sensors, just leave it alone.. then tap the accelerometer one and watch the graph, turn it one direction and watch the graph, etc through the various poles. There might be other apps out there to more easily visualize it, but this one will give you very detailed information.

You must have lived a very sheltered life or stayed far away from any media for this to be the most ridiculous thing you have ever heard.
I don't see why to the lay person using a game that heavily makes use of the either the gyroscope or accelerometer would be ridiculous? Either way, the game worked perfectly on my first Nexus so I'm confident its not an issue with the game.
The accelerometer test in the Android Sensor Box app shows the ball falling to the right straight away when the app is opened with the device placed on a flat table. This correlates with what I have seen in Temple Run.
Using the app you recommended, well I'm not sure what it shows! Two lines stay in the middle of the of the chart whilst the blue line stays at the top of the scale (+8). No idea of this is normal or not.
I've got the same problem while playing GTA. Every other game i tried works nice. Can somebody confirm that it is a GTA specific problem?!

intermittent lines on screen. hard or software?

hey,
I've noticed some lines showing up on my screen... they only show once every 10/15 min and run across the vritical when in landscape mode. typically only one or two pixels thick and lasts only a moment.
Like every one my tablet takes a tumble now and again, but if it was hardware then my is it so intermittent?
any ideas?
I think this has happened to mine too but it flashes so fast that I don't know if it's happening or I'm seeing things. It's very rare though for me.

I get it every now and again, seems to happen when the screen has been on for a long period.
Not sure what is causing it, I tried to Google it but couldn't find anything.
It seems to be software guys, as before the 4.1.2 update I was getting these lines around 2x as often. Hopefully the next ota knocks them out for good.
I think it is WiFi reception strength related. In my case, they appear only when WiFi signal is weak. They have been there since the beginning. But now, not only vertical, some times horizontal lines appear as well. Horizontal lines didn't exist before 4.1.2 update. Same issue have I with my TF700. So, I assume it's both hardware/software related.

I never had this with stock rom but have had it with some custom roms, I had it with "slimbean 2.7" but since updating to 2.8 it has gone. So, it points to software.
Maybe megamoz is onto something too.
I don't think it is a faulty screen. Something else is going on.
I am on rooted stock, had them both before and after rooting.
Don't think it is related to the WIFI, not for me anyway, as I get it when browsing in the living room and I sit right next to my router so I get full signal.

that would sound like a prime candidate for me. I have been stuck in hospital for 10 days, and the tab has been on for 15+ hours at a time some days... although the wifi angle is interesting too.
just happy its "normal" and not that I dropped it
thanks everyone for you input
Yeah I am also getting them and they seem to happen more when there is alot of white background on my screen or maybe that's when I notice them more lol but as far as problems go that's all my NEXUS7 has so hopefully it is software and can be fixed with a good old update COME ONNN 4.2 GOD BLESS YOU GUYS

I see it everytime I use Flipboard, and also have noticed it in Maxthon occasionally. At times it flickers, and others the thin line will stay until I move to another page/screen.
Sensation, ARHD667
its software. i remember seeing a post a while back about a guy who managed to take a screenshot of it. somehow. if it was a hardware issue, it wouldnt appear on a screenshot

Nexus 7 only rotates when positioned EXACTLY vertical?

I just got a new nexus 7 3g yesterday and I can only get the thing to auto rotate if it's positioned pretty much straight up and down. I had the wifi model before and never seen this. It's really annoying. Is this a known issue?
EDIT: Apparently it is, going to return it for a new one.
My N7 doesn't rotate so well either. Sometimes I have to shake it

Found another thread with lots of people with the same problem. Many of them just returned it for a new one. Guess that is what I'm going to do. Sucks but oh well. =\
I don't think this would be considered a hardware problem. Software controls the limitations of rotation and angles before it considers it "wanting to rotate".
If it wasn't constrained, it would drive you crazy. Download an accelometer tester or play a game like Bike Race and see if the sensor is working accurately. If it is, then it is just normal constraints.
Mine won't rotate unless it is about at a 45 degree angle. Offering up your software version is also a good requirement. Are you on Original software? 4.1? 4.1.2? 4.2?

It's the same throughout all apps, the homescreen, everything. To rotate it has to be in the perfect position...straight up. Even at like 5 degrees it won't rotate. I've factory reset, rebooted multiple times. I've tried a few games and some accelerator/gryo calibration apps. One of the gryo apps worked for a little bit then I rebooted and it went back to acting up. I've had every android since the original g1 and the wifi n7 and never had this issue. I went from 4.2 to 4.2.1. It's all original no custom roms or anything.
I think that's only good thing that N7 need proper turning before it rotates itself.
Nothing is more annoying than device which rotates even when you don't want it do that.

I'm on 4.2.1
While in one of the sensor test apps it rotated the display around 25 degrees tilt on either x or y axes.
It may depend on the particular app.

Gyro issues?

Anyone else having gyroscope issues?
stock rooted 4.2 Rom, opened last night.
I got mc3 and the gyroscope is weird.. Up/down moves the game left and right, left/right moves the game up and down.
I downloaded elixr 2 and it did the same thing. And also android sensor box.
I can take a video if nobody gets what I'm saying.

Okay, that's a good sign.
Btw what apps/games work correctly for you with the gyroscope?

All of the sudden, I attempted to use Photosphere on my N10 and the 3D grid is doing barrel rolls uncontrollably. I shut down, restarted and the same thing happened. This is definitely a gyroscope problem. I downloaded Android Sensor Box and the gyro cube spins just like photosphere. Weird thing is that I can play Need For Speed and it works fine. I downloaded GPS Status and followed the calibrate procedure which fixes the spinning, until I reboot.
I know a factory reset is probably in order but I really don't want to spend 90 minutes setting it all up again, losing my name progress etc.
Video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=XF4sTj4PIt4
Photo Sphere mode worked all right for a month. All of a sudden, the blue dot kept drifting all the time, or just showing the wrong orientation, so no image could be taken. Checked with Sensor Kinetics app - the same thing constant drift to one side. The support suggested to Reset the tablet to factory defaults. Seems to have solved the problem, but not the best solution as I have to reinstall the apps again.
