[Q][HARDWARE] Nexus 4 deep scratches on the metal sideband. Protection from rust? - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello, I recently dropped my Nexus 4 to a concrete pavement. Fortunately it was in a case and did not get much damage, but it still received 3 scratches on the silver metal sideband, one of which seems quite deep since you can see the black background through it. Check out the attached images.
Anyway, my questions are:
1. Do you think this kind of damage is reparable? Is it possible to replace only the sideband? If so, how much do you think would that cost?
2. Do you think any kind of anticorrossion product should be applied on the scratches to protect them from rust? If so, could you recommend any?
Any help will be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

1. No, I don't think that's repairable.
2. No, you don't need to put rust protection on the scratches. All my old devices were filled with scratches (especially on the bezel) and there were never any rust issues.

I think that ring is plastic. I have not scratched mine but I have checked it with a magnet and that does not stick. That means it is not steel and that is the only thing that would rust.

Ok, thanks guys. I'll just leave it as it is, then. All I need to do now is to find a more protective case, I guess...

Just out if curiosity, which case were you using?

I was using a flip case that I bought on eBay (here's the link, but I'm not sure if you can access it as it's the French eBay: tinyurl.com/cbt4jxc ; here's just a photo: tinyurl.com/c5czd4n ).
It generally did an OK job during the accident, protecting the back and front of my Nexus, however the upper corners were not protected which resulted in the damage. What is curious is that the lower corners ARE protected, and if they applied the same to the upper ones, I believe my phone would have come out of all of this without even a scratch.
Right now I'm considering a Ringke Fusion case (tinyurl.com/d9ssjuo). Do you know anything about it? Can you recommend it?

Buy the oem bumper, it looks like its part of the phone, hiding the ugly scratches.

Yes, but it doesn't protect the glass back side of the Nexus 4, contrary to Ringke. Ringke case also hides the scratches and costs less

Already got scratches on metal frame surrounding back camera

Ok, so I've had the Note for only a week and just today I noticed three scratches on the metal frame around the back camera lens. I've really babied this phone and only kept it in my pant pockets. It seems that its really easy to scratch it. Anyone else notice this?

You know, they do make protective cases for cell phones nowadays.

Indeed, and I'm waiting for mines, which should be coming in this week. But even a case is not gonna protect the camera or the metal frame, but I guess it will lower their height a little bit due to the higher case.

I cant decide if i will put my Note in a case. Ive always been an Otterbox Commuter fan... But this device feels good without.
Oh... No scratches here, yet.

I just ordered this:
http://www.amazon.com/Skinomi-TechS...KZ1G/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1322451048&sr=8-2
Hopefully it will be enough to alleviate my fears on setting the device down and getting it scratched(as well as when its in my jacket pocket with who know what else)
The DAY I bought my Galaxy Note it was put inside a protective pouch...
Been 2 weeks and looks like it was just unboxed...
I had the Galaxy S for one year before upgrading to the note. I carried it without screen or body protection on many pants pockets, backpack pockets, carried it to the beach, mountains...
After purchasing the Galaxy Note I gave it to a friend, and after a good cleaning, it looks as new. The screen is absolutely untouched. It only has a scratch on a corner of the metal on the border after a fall on concrete.
I don't know if the Note can endure this, for the moment I'll be very careful with it.
I just felt this is exaclty what is going to happen the moment I unboxed the phone. My solution was putting an old (but good quality - Vikuiti) screen protector so it covers the lens and surrounding plastic and carefully cutting around it with a hooked scalpel. Works perfectly.
As Cat Stevens said: "The first cut is the deepest'
It's just a phone.
Bear in mind how lucky you are that this is even an issue in your life.
Just a reality check.
I just expect that frame is gonna get scratched. Is what it is.

Thin case that only "grabs" top and bottom?

Right now Im running a bumper (well, the girlfriend, who is a phonebreaker, is running it because she is waiting for her substantial case to arrive) but I was wondering if there were other options.
Most times Im running naked and only using the bumper in situations when I thought there was real risk. The main reason is because i love the cascading touch screen, it feels much better working on the phone without my thumb crashing into the lip of a bezel or case when swiping/typing.
So my question is, has anyeone seen a case that clips onto the phone holding only onto the top/bottom (and corners) but maybe only going up half or less of the sides, as to not interfere with the drop off effect of the screen?
I think if I had something like that I would be more willing to run the case more often. I know it couldn't be a bumper, it would need a back to support the sides and I am prepared to live with not seeing the blingy back.
I've been looking for this too! Haven't found a case like that yet...

I asked exactly this same question, and the answer is that no one has made such a case yet. However, I did buy the rearth ringke slim case, which grips the sides, but very shallow, and it is pretty good. You don't bump the sides until you are about three fourths of the way down the bevel.

Might want to send an email to Rearth, and inquire about them making one. They already have one for the Galaxy Nexus. Just a thought.

I'm waiting for this case from Amazon, its a leather flip down case and only grabs the 4 corners of the phone leaving most of the screen free, and i don't even need a screen protector with that.

Damn, that in a thin TPU with no flip cover would be basically what I am looking for. I rock my phone naked 90% of the time now and the bumper when riding my motorcycle. I just cant stomach covering up a thin, attractive product with a massive case.
Email sent to Rearth. I would love a Nexus 4 version of their Galaxy Nexus Slim case.

I use this case only in my car or in my pocket. When i get home it takes me 3" to remove it or put it back on. And i don't like screen or back protectors.

Do you have a case for your phone?

Hi, I've had the nexus for two days now and yesterday I dropped it from about two feet to the kitchen floor. Nothing happened to the phone. The floor is sort of like plastic? I'm not sure what kitchen floors are made of. Anyway, this is my first glass phone and I'm very paranoid that I may crack it someday. I've seen what happens if you drop a glass phone, i.e iPhone and nexus and its scary. My previous phone; I never dropped it once (at least that I can recall), but this phone is a lot slimmer and easier to slip from the hand.
I primarily ask because I'm one of those people who would rather have a 'naked' phone. I feel like it shows the true beauty of phones, but I also don't want to have a shattered phone
I also take good care of my phones. But you never know what can happen.

I ordered the Ringke Fusion case, but hasn't arrived yet.
Absolutely man, buy a good case and a screen cover. Its worth the extra 30 or 40$.
I use a pouch case (the shocksock leather one, looks very nice on the phone) which protects the entire phone when it's in my pocket but allows me to use it without a case or screen protector. Worked for me for two years with my HD2 (not a single scratch or dent apart from once when my friend dropped it when using it) and hopefully it should work for me with this phone too.

Tmobile store now has the hard body glove case and the silicon case. I got the hard case and it is great did not noticibly change the weight or size of the phone like a lot of cases
I bought the Acase Superleggera Pro from Amazon for $15 and have had it for a few days. I can finally rest easy about dropping it since it has the hard shell on the outside with the silicone layer on the inside almost like an Otterbox (2 stage case). All port cutouts are precise and buttons are easy to press. I've owned 2 other cases and both seemed to offer little protection for it. I just hope I never have to test it lol.
I'm just like you: anxious and not liking cases and I definitely advise you to use one. I bought a 3$ TPU case and it protects the phone well plus it makes it less slippery.

Using the official bumper + skinomi screen protector. Works very well for me. Dropped the phone once, ~1meter fall (from my pocket) on wooden floor, the bumper definitely saved it.
Take a case and a 2 protectors(face and bottom) to protect the phone from scratches. Both cost about 10 €
I use them since the first day and everything is fine for me. It saved my phone more than once.
Bought a Cruzerlite android army case. Fits really well, looks good, and the TPU material is soft and protective.

i'm have the same opinion that the N4 looks much better "naked" but i'm afraid that the glass breaks if the phone hits the floor..
so i ordered a cheap tpu chase and use it only when i leave my home. at home my phone is "naked"

It's just stuffs with no animal products in it. This is the way I live, I hate violence, I hate slavery, so I won't support it in any way. I know it sounds funny when you don't know about it, but it's the only way we can reject animal cruelty. I could say a lot, but I think it's not the place to talk about it.
I hate cases, with this phone I use one but I don't like it especially after a week or so of using a case how good the phone feels when you take it out

I'm using an ionic styled black case that you find on amazon for under 10 bucks. Great protection, doesn't add much bulk imo and it feels very good in my hands. Plus I feel safer with it on and that's what's important...ones own peace of mind.
My cousin has a cruzerlite case, there is nothing wrong with it but I prefer the case I currently have on my phone. I actually purchased it to hold me over till I find something that I really liked. Now its my daily driver and I couldn't be happier.

Dbrand on the back, an Etsy pouch and that does me. Don't like cases on this phone feels better using it naked.
Ringke SLIM for day to day. Ionic Guardian (got it when it was $4) for outdoor stuff.
Naked is awesome, but not safe

[Q] Dropped my phone

Yesterday unfortunately i dropped my phone from about 1 meter height on concrete but it was in a sgp slim armor case and the outside of the phone survived and since im paranoid i wanted to ask if could anything have happened to the insides of the phone, up until now it hasnt shown anything strange but i just wanted to know if you guys have dropped it and have had anything.

Glad to hear that Slim Armor is protecting your G2. I also using Slim Armor and drop by 70cm, its fine and no scratch at all on the phone either on the case.
@androidkid311
Its a little bit bulky, but you get more grip on the phone and the important thing is your phone should be more safe when accidentally dropping it.
If you want more protection, use tempered glass screen guard combine with slim armor

It is a little bit bulky when you get used to the phones slimness , but i dont mind at all after i had the lumia 920 with a incipio dualpro...now that is bulky..and i actually ordered a Case-Mate tough heavy duty because i like to change my cases a lot and i wanted the screen to be a little bit more protected with the case-mate not being almost flat with the screen like the slim armor is.

Very little, 1-2 mm max if you lay it carefully i dont think the screen will touch the surface, it isnt the most protective case but it doesnt interfere at all with the glass so screen potectors wont be an issue

White 6P Back Discoloration

I had to take my skinomi off my phone because it had become so discolored from my jeans. Now I'm wondering if I should get another and have to replace it down the road as well from the same issue or go without. I want to know though if other users of the white model have noticed discoloration? I'd rather end up with blue skins than a blue phone, but if going naked avoids it altogether that'd be cool. Thanks
Have had a white naked for a year+ and looks pristine. No spots, no stains, no discoloration.

The phone looks nice naked but the aluminum body is prone to dents and dings if you aren't careful with the phone. When I was looking at used ones on EBay last summer it was hard to find one without dings, dents or scratches on the body.

I'm not too worried about that since I've been using the phone with nothing but a bumper and skin since it was released and it still looks pristine other than my skin getting discolored. Though I will say the issues you mentioned is one reason I still prefer plastic to metal phones.

Plus with plastic normally you have a removable battery.
I had the graphite and it got dings from dust getting in the case. I replaced the frame with the silver one and it looks great with the black finger print reader.

Yeah, just to loosen the glue, I don't remember it being too difficult. I used a hair dryer just because I wasn't at work. Also an easy way to get the glass and trim off are to use a razor blade put in at the antenna band and gently pry, must use heat!
