Harvard Online Classes - Mobile Dev. - Java for Android App Development

I recently found these and tried to order them in which I believe should be the order they should be viewed.
I have not gone through them yet, but I am looking forward to them.

Sky By Mobile..

Has anyone got this working on a WM5 device yet?
The url's that you go to come back with
"service is not available for your mobile device".. but there are lots of JAR's and JAD's floating around for different phone types..
EDITED:
As I'm not a Vodafone 3G customer - i'm after the SKY TV Guides and the ability t mark something as "to record" and have it automatically recorded at home.....
Charlie Grillo
id be interested in this too
Can someone explain a bit mroe about this? Is it a service that sky are introducing for their customers, or an extra pay service? Cheers.
This is for current customer (for free):

try going to:
mobile.sky.com/sbm
this then checks your phones comatibility
Sky by Mobile - Is it possible on Windows Mobile?
By Gears. Published on 10 Jul 2006.
Some of you may be aware of a new service launched by Sky TV recently. If you're lucky enough to have one of their whizzy PVR's then you'll already be used to the live pause and recording to hard disk. However, recently they announced their Sky by Mobile service which allows you to get the latest news and videos from Sky plus you can now remotely set programmes to record onto your Sky+ box. Good eh?
Only one problem though. You need one of these handsets to run the software, and Windows Mobile isn't on there. I'd really like to use this service - I'm always forgetting to set my Sky+ box or I'm away from the house and I can't physically touch the remote. Last night I found this interesting digitalspy.co.uk thread and downloaded this JAR file and plonked it onto my Orange SPV C600. I opened it up in file explorer and ran it in the Java MIDlet Manager. It does actually work, I can load it up and enter my sky.com credentials, however it stops after that - I presume because it can't access the net. I can't seem to get around this and I've tried everything like opening a GPRS connection manually and tweaking with the security settings.
Has anyone else tried this successfully ? I'm trying the JAR file for the Nokia 6230 in this example but Sky hide the links so I've not found any other JAR files to test.
http://mobile.sky.com/SBM/series40/sky_S40_LR_SF_6230/SkyMobile_S40_LR_SF_6230.jar
It installs in the midlet manager, and runs, but does not connect or go any further.
Surur
ive tried the link in a few different browsers, pie, mnimo and the java based opera but no look, just says not compatible with your device, i guess we will have to wait untill the sky.com web based service is available and use the text service in the mean time
got excited when the letter came through the post, its been in the pipeline for about a year or so now
edit: looked at the website http://www.wecomm.com/ who i think are the company that provide the software for the service and they do have other products that work on WM phones, so maybe soon it will be on our wizards!
anyone know whether we are going to get this?
On a similar subject, does anyone have the software program that you need to view your sky channels via broadband? I've just registered for it, but they email the URL to the original email address that was given to them by the account holder, but my Dad never gave them one so I'm struggling to get the software!
Cheers.
I think everyone has given up on this but ive managed to get a collection of installers for various phones, using the user agent tags in firefox.
not managed to get any of them to work though! but thought they may be useful to other people.
edit: ignore this post i cant seem to upload the files!
but if anyone is interrested give me a shout, ive got about 13 different installer files, mainly nokia, motorola, SE an i think one might be for blackberry.

[APP][PRJ] MyDVD Collection - a Barcorama companion

Hey guys,
I'm delving into PPC development for the first time (have done other development in .NET but never for PPC). I'm creating an application called MyDVD Collection. It will be a handheld database for keeping track of DVDs/CDs/Console games. Now, what's going to make mine a little different than others like this is that I have designed it to work in conjunction w/ Barcorama. Basically, you'll be able to set this program as the external executable which Barcorama passes its scanned barcode to. It will then check your collection to see if you already own it, give you the ability to add it if it does not exist, and will eventually pull information from the Internet about that item and auto fill (as soon as I find a reliable way to do that).
So far, I have the basic database structure defined and have the screen built to view the items in the database, as well as a way to filter that view. Next is to build the entry form for adding items, and a basic search function. I should have an alpha version ready for testing soon. If anyone is interested in testing, please let me know.

How do you get the full article downloaded with Newsbreak or SPB News??

Hi all, I know you can get some rss feeders that purport to download the entire article so you can read it all even offline, but I have not as yet found out how to get either Newsbreak (which I am not sure if it does) or SPB News (which does but I cant figure it out) to do this... can anyone please help me with easy to follow instructions so I can get the full article to read off line etc... thanks in advance...
Spb News can, sort of...
I am using Spb News on my HD2. It is not (and by far) the best RSS reader out there but for a selected number of feeds, there are indeed "templates" which will fetch you the full articles instead of what would otherwise just look like a worthless bunch of tweets. Here is a short extract of the developer's documentation:
Templates in Spb Insight project are intended to download and parse web documents of different kind, mostly news sites. Since different web sites have very different page formatting, a template needs to be created for every site. A template contains information about the site and code to help parse content, clean it up from menus, advertisements and so on.
The template language was created with easiness, popularity and conformity to internet standards in mind. Wide-spread internet language Jscript (a.k.a. ECMAScript) was chosen as the basic language, wrapped with XML to enable metadata processing, such as channel names etc.
One template can contain definitions for multiple channels, as there are usually several channels on one site that has the same formatting and the parsing code for them should be shared.
Despite the recent release of the renamed v2.0 (from Insight to News) bringing next to nothing new, Spb has seemingly moved their resources away from this product so that the "channels" are no longer kept up-to-date. It is now essentially a matter of trial&error to find out those feeds from the online catalogue that still can return you the full articles, or, you program yourself a template. A third option is to use one of the user-contributed templates directly from the forum.
Good luck and happy news reading!
Z.
Thanks for the info, I was hoping there would be an easy (ier) solution as I am not that savvy with technamolology...
I will have a look and see if I cant figure it all out... cheers.

[Q] help creating programs?

Hi. I'm currently taking a degree in Computing, and one of the courses is visual programming. Now the lecturer is the person to make me buy my first Android phone (Hero) and from that, I've become hooked, purchasing the Desire and Desire HD. Seeing as we are both large Android nuts, and have managed to convert all par one person in the class to Android, he has chosen for us to program a simple currency converter for Android 2.1-2.2. I have some knowledge of Rom editing etc, but non of programming...
With this, I have searched about, but can only find programs/guides to help with pre-eclair Android, so if any help pointing me into the right direction? I plan to try make the app with eclipse unless I find an easier alternative.
Android developer site has tutorials for 2.2.
You can post your questions either here or stackoverflow later
Yea the android developer site is the first port of call.
Also check out the examples in the SDK - will get you started.
its deadline day coming up, and with all the help with google.developers resources, I have sort of made a program, but cannot finish it off.
A basic currency converter, with 2 activites (main) and (admin - allows changing of rates)
I for some reason cannot implement data storage.
Using the guide here, http://www.vogella.de/articles/Android/article.html, I built my currency converter roughly upon this, but haven't been able to link changes in my currency rates to my formula (USD * 0.64) instead of (USD * inputed currency rate)
Anyone able to point me in the correct way? As i've had several errors with float and read from/write to issues.
This is only for coursework, and will not be put onto the market at all.
And before anyone mentions, this isn't the primary subject on the course...it's an annoying subject needed for the pass.
You need post the code and the actual errors you're getting, otherwise we are just having to guess what your problem is.
Yeah, not sure what you're doing. Sounds like you need an internal database that stores your conversion rates.

[Q] Anyone good with Microsoft Access?

Hi,
I need serious help and i've searched the internet more in the past few days than ever before and I have got nothing, so I thought where else best to turn.
I have a database for my ICT coursework based on booking swimming lessons. I have 4 tables (tblChildren, tblBooking, tblTeacher, tblLesson) My booking table is full of lookups, I think my problem lies here, but i'm not sure how to work around it. The lookups are the child, their teacher and the lesson they're booked into(pictured here).
I have a booking form, that (should) link to this. When I first made the form it was a manual entry form (had to memorise all the information and enter it on the form to match) and it would enter it and save it in the table. To get around the manual entry i used a lookup where childID is and then changed the control sources of all the fields to pick up the information.
Now, as I changed that to a lookup, it is now finding information and not using it to enter information into the table and therefore not creating a bookingID and not allowing me to save it by creating a record in the table.
Booking form pictured here
Copy of the database here.
If anyone can help i'd appreciate this so much as my final coursework deadline is wednesday. Cheers.
[Thought it's worth mentioning that all information is test information and made up]
Erm... this isn't a "help me with my homework" forum. It's not even an Office forum, much less an Access forum. It's a Win8 forum...
