Storing and playing music w/ Drive - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Instead of storing music on my N4 can I use dropbox or Google Drive to store the mp3 music? Would I be able to access the files to play them on my N4?

It won't store the files if you uncheck cache music.

You have to use the upload tool on a desktop and it will stream it from your device.

Where do I find the upload tool on my pc when the N4 is plugged in to it?
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda app-developers app

N4 don't need to be plugged to the pc all you need to do is d/load the google music manager... Then it will upload all your music to google servers... From that point you can stream all your music to your N4 WITHOUT USING SPACE ON YOUR N4.

https://play.google.com/music nice big button that says Upload Music. Click it.
You can upload upto 20,000 songs in any quality rate. Saved my ass twice from HDD failures, restored directly back to my PC from my Google Music account plus the benefits of being able to stream music to my N4 wherever I am. You can also pin music from the app so that it's preloaded if you need to save on mobile data.
I can say it streams just fine even driving at high speed .

Quick correction, it uses some space as cache but you can quickly clear it whenever. Useful since you may only be listening to a lot of the same music week to week as far as saving data goes.

Ummm even with this not checked??
Maybe 2,or 3 songs max...

No it doesn't play from your PC. It plays from the cloud. You upload your music to Google's servers and you can play it from anything, anywhere, with a internet connection.

You can either store music on your device, or stream it from a service like Google Music. You either use device storage, or you use data/wifi to stream it. There are no other options. This is why people value unlimited data plans so highly.

I have unlimited data, but at&t throttles it at 3gb. Let's not be ignorant that this still exists with these types of plans.

Smartshare apk (up to date ]

OK I've spent most of the day looking into this with minimal success.
As there are some great sales on today I've been and got an lg smart TV.
To get the nexus 4 to connect I need the smartshare app but as I live in the UK it says it's not available over here yet :thumbdown:.
So I've been searching on XDA today and found the smartshare apk and installed it but it won't open .

You don't you have to upload the music to Google servers. Took about a week of 24/7 uploading to get my entire collection (80 GB) onto Google's server.

you just download an app on your desktop and it will upload your music in the background. No need to do anything.
Box is more for files rather than streaming as far as I know.
Install ES File explorer.
Go to the Net tab
Add new Box
Login to the Box account with ES File explorer
Then click to the Folder or MP3 file to stream music.
Hope it will help you.

Screen video recorder?

I've been searching for a way to record my gameplay on this tablet. There doesn't seem to be one that actually works properly on this device Anyone figure out or found an app that actually works? I purchased Screencast video recorder, but its frame rate is in the single digits and the color turns out inverted I know this device can handle it. Could be compatibility issues.

Here is a video to show the inverted color(Reds are blue) and slow frame rate. (Per request)
*This was recorded using stock kernel. Normal resolution. Frame rate at 30fps. (Though running benchmark from the app shows 5fps it could handle!) Tried it with franco kernel r8 but all it did was record the last screen that it was on before recording started and did not record gameplay just frozen. Also during recording it did affect my gameplay. It had some lag. I'll adjust the kernel and see if performance mode will fix that.
Update:Changed to Performance using setcpu did nothing to remedy the gameplay lag while recording

Not on the N10. Its extremely laggy and fps is in the single digits for me. When I had the Note 10.1 I had no issues recording. Even the color was correct.

How does it perform with "normal resolution" selected instead of "high resolution"? Most people don't need the gameplay video in 2560x1600... Also, if the frame rate is better with low resolution (it surely is), could you send me a recorded video (no more than 10 seconds long)?

Now I think the best way is to use your phone...
and there's still another way, if you can share your screen to your pc, then you can record your pc screen, it's much easier to find a screen recorder for pc.

It does work fine on my SGS3. But the problem is that its such a small screen when it comes to gameplay. I'm used to the larger screen. I did try Airdroid because it has the ability to record the tablet screen from the PC but it was not smooth at all. It had worse frame rate.

From the volume of posts on this topic, and from the number of screencasting apps on the play store.....looks to me like a lot of people with N10's are filming their screen via their cameras
Would love if one of the Screencasting devs updated their software so it's compatible with the N10
Same here with my Note 2. The reds and blues get inverted. But framerate is fine.
EDIT: Does anyone know how to invert the colors back to normal using Sony Vegas or even Photoshop? It seems like it is only the reds and blues that get inverted. Link to my short video: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/96857758/red&blue.mp4

I haven't encountered that problem with my N4 yet...figured it had something to do with not having external SD, since its the same way on my N7. My music sometimes doesn't import it straight away but after I download since I use player pro I use it s scan feature and just have it set to my swarm folder and it grabs the music and album art right away.

Jagged youtube videos on N7 2013

Hi all!
I got my N7 2013 some days ago and I cant stop looking at the jagged videos it plays when using youtube and HD, even the best quality channels like MKBHD have big artifacts when looked closely.
I was expecting a quality that would blow me away but I found this:
{
"lightbox_close": "Close",
"lightbox_next": "Next",
"lightbox_previous": "Previous",
"lightbox_error": "The requested content cannot be loaded. Please try again later.",
"lightbox_start_slideshow": "Start slideshow",

"lightbox_download": "Download",
"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
The thing is that this issue is youtube related, because vimeo or the downloaded videos looks fantastic. Does anyone know how to fix this?
Some people told me that it is the new youtube apk, is any way of getting an older one without root?
PS: Sorry for the big image I cant post links, and wanted to show you the image in full size.
Thanks!
It has been a problem since the new YouTube app came out and they STILL haven't fixed it. You can try to get the old YouTube apk, or just use a 3rd party app like Viral or BSPlayer and "share" the video to it.
Link to old thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=45090332#post45090332
It's an old issue but I think it deserves a bump because it's just ridiculous how long they let this issue stay unfixed. What's the point of having crazy high resolution screens on the Nexus devices if YouTube looks like trash?
Bought a Nexus 7 2013 today and i too have this issue, btw tried to copy the link to Bsplayer...the quality wasn't better

I totally gave up on the official app, as in only using it to share content on to Viral. It's like two more kicks and delivers true 720p. It even loads in that quality faster than the YouTube app, rebuffers less, plays in the background and has a pop-up function.
Too bad Viral doesn't support 1080p.
I dunno whether to laugh or cry at the fact that Google's own video service is incapable of playing full HD video on their flagship full HD tablet. Anyone know if it's the same on the Nexus 10?

Ok then let me correct, there is no 1080p for 90% videos on Viral. (in the one you posted there is, but it's minority)

Pretty much every single video i searched, with "1080p" in title was available only in 720p @ Viral.
