Why I am never buying from Sony again - Xperia Z General

Ok. So. Before I begin, I am telling the world my experience with Sony because I feel an injustice has been committed and I want to let people know what they are getting themselves in for.
Right.
So, the day the Xperia Z was released in New Zealand, I went out and purchased one. After seeing many videos on YouTube of people banging the phone on the edge of tables and dropping it into water, I was convinced that it was both durable, functional and fashionable.
So last last week, I was doing the same as any regular day, which was making my hour long commute into University.
That day I had a test, which meant I was pretty nervous about studying, so I decided to stop holding my phone (which is what I usually do on the bus.. just hold my phone and listen to music), and place it in my satchel bag which was on the chair beside me.
After about 10 minutes of listening to music, I decided the current song I was listening to wasn't what I wanted to hear. So, I reached into my bag and pulled out my phone. I noticed some "fluff" on the bottom of the phone, but figured it was just some out of my bag that had gotten stuck to the screen and shrugged it off. I turned on the phone using the power button on the side, and then tapped my finger on the next song button. Nothing happened. I then assumed it had something to do with the so-figured "fluff" on the bottom of the phones display by the mic , and as I reached to brush it off with my finger I noticed that it wasn't fluff at all... It was a group of cracks....
I then angled my phone, and saw that there were a few cracks running to various points on the perimeter of the screen. It was shocked.. and taken aback... How did an Xperia Z, which is marketed as this "durable" beast, succumb to the most mundane of things?
The phone did not break underwater after saving my life from a bullet in an underwater gunfight as I had imagined... No, it had broken in a bag, on a bus.
I later called the hotline, who noted straight away that it was physical damage, even though in a bag on a bus surely is considered in "typical use" as the warranty says, and referred me onto a service center in Auckland.
After hearing a verbal $200-250 estimate repair bill, I paid $40 for a technicians analysis, which was then to be deducted off the final price.
I gave them a call to ask about the repair, and they gave me a new figure. Double that of their estimate. $483...
So my phone is on the threshold of being a write-off ($999 retail). With absolutely no sympathy from Sony, and a massive bill to pay if I am to use it again.
I think this is terrible.. My old phone.. Correction -- current phone.. An iPhone 4, has survived drops, bangs, BUS RIDES, and even a trip in the toilet, without need for repair or damage other than a couple scrapes. No dead pixels... Still works as new practically.
TL;DR "durable" Xperia Z glass front panel cracked doing the most mundane of tasks, in a bag, on a seat, in a bus. Phone is more or less a write-off, and Sony has offered no support or sympathy.
Thanks for reading...
P.S if anyone wants pictures, I cannot post them until I retrieve the phone from the repair shop. I just called today about a quote after the technicians analysis.

I guess bad luck. You probably hit the bag somewhere while commuting and with that hit the screen at the wrong spot. The screen isn't unbreakable and only the polycarbonate frame protects it (because the screen is positioned slightly lower) when banging it on a tables edge or something.
So I'm very sorry for you, but this isn't bad quality of the device or lack of customer service on Sony's part. This is just plain bad luck. Be more careful with your current device. Yes, even your iPhone can break this way.

I totally agree with this !

Damn, dude. Sorry about your XZ.
This is where apple IMO have the edge. You break the screen and they have a reasonable flat fee and give you a (refurbished) replacement.
You must have crushed the phone in an awkward place in your bag for it to break though. I had mine fly out of my top pocket, went over my head and landed on a surface about 1 meter away, thankfully it didn't hit the floor though - still it would have dropped about 30-60cms with some speed.
Almost $500 is absurd especially considering the phone brand new is $600 (at a lot of places in Australia).

Ouch.. Seriously, I can't see why u had so many issues with it.
Mine has been banged around for two weeks now, been in the shower multiple times and most importantly survived series of drops in to the ground. I've ordered a 2$ rubber case on eBay, just to be sure!
I think your issue is Sony in your country. It need better insurances!
And yeah iPhone 4 got like 9 lives or something. First we heard about the screens cracking but now how much they overcome(toilet drops, hardcore floor hitting and others!. But still, it can't compare with my Sony Xperia Z!
My opinion!
Cheers! Pietroni

I don't think Sony ever marketed this phone as super-durable, only water and dust resistant (to a certain point).

Whell, they can't create case history of people calling them and asking to repair free their broken phone.. sorry for you but i agree with the "bad luck theory". My phone fell many times and has only three little scratches on the frame.
(that i think is covered with some sort of gum and that gum is scratched)

from the website:
"An incredibly tough frame
The skeleton frame is made of tough glass fibre polyamide. It has superior mechanical strength, and is so strong that it’s often used as a metal substitute in cars and electronics."
"Durable glass panels
Both the front and back panels of Xperia Z are made of durable tempered glass that’s much stronger than conventional glass. Each glass panel also has an anti-shatter film for even greater durability."

Dude I have seen more broken screens on Iphones than any other phone, so I guess they have to do something about it, when the phone to buy outright is almost twice the price of almost any others.

Pure bad luck maybe...?
I hate to say it, but phones don't break by themselves.
Mostly people damage them like a chip on a windscreen and don't notice it, and it gets worse over time until BOOM.
I only know that over the many many years i've had phones, and trust me, since the dark days of bricks i've almost had them all, with all the punishment i've given my phones, including dropping them onto concrete (I've never owned an apple phone before anyone goes hang on), i've never had unexpected issues like this arise. In fact, i've been lucky enough not to actually ever crack or shatter a screen.
Sorry but i'm with Sony on this one, and they burned me with the X10.
As for Apple, they will just tell you your phone is water damaged and to get the hell out of their store unless you come back in a cardigan, slippers and non prescription glasses, and buy a new iphone off them when you do come back.

I used mine as a ping pong ball .....
Maybe you bended it ALOT.

That's pretty sad man. Then again these things happen, but not for everyone. I had a similar issue with my Samsung Galaxy S2. It got bended in my pocket while, I was sitting. When took it to repair they said we cannot fixed it under warranty coz it has been damaged. I was shocked and they said we can fix it with over 400 euros. Its insane.
Best way is to fix it yourself if its fixable by ordering the parts.

if you wanna sell it let us know lol im sure in a few months parts will become really cheap. we have a guy at our local shopping centre who charges by the hour to fix your phone, im sure it wont take more than an hour to replace since i saw a video of one being put together in under 5 min lol
---------- Post added at 09:50 PM ---------- Previous post was at 09:25 PM ----------
and to be fair there is no way for sony to really know how it got broken, if apple honoured warrenty on their broken screens they would have gone bankrupt but there is nothing more disspointing than to have that happen. i dropped mine a few times not a scratch on it

Of course shouldn't that kind of dammages be coverd by the warranty. Sony has thr right on their side. On the otherside, I understand that you get mad at Sony.

Fit of anger, Throw X1 :(

I had a huge fit of anger today and threw my X1 down on the floor. It bounced off the carperted floor, and hit the steel wall of my cubicle. The battery cover flew open and the battery flew out.
The slider is now loose. I went to the SE service center and they said that they've to import a part from Sony to fix my phone.
Luckily no more issues. everything else works fine, no cracks and paint peeling off.
Can I ask the reason you throw your X1 is because of the phone or work? I have a sudden urge to throw my X1 too as it kept hanging on me...
Ouchies!
Hopefully everything works out with parts replacement,
..and whatever you where angry for
Haha... Your story amused me. I'm glad it survived I once threw my cell-phone in rage with full force into a brick wall, drunk, late at the night of my graduation... Hehe. It smashed into pieces. That was ten years ago though, and it was no big loss since it was a big old clumpsy Nokia that hit the dust
Get anger management courses.
wht else, girl problems, can't live with them, can't live without them
Everrything else works fine though, and it'll take 6-7 days for the new part to be shipped. Have to wait till that.
But 1 point i'd like to make, after the most of man handled, not even scratch or a crack... and mine is 08W44.... can anything be deduced from tat?

Glad to hear it survived mate, I threw an old nokia 6210 at a stone wall back in the day when they were new (same reason as you. women, eh?), and it somehow survived... I doubt my beloved x1 would survive such a collision but I also doubt that I'll let myself get that heavy handed with this phone
I've broken an NEC in half using just my hands.
It all depends on who you're dating I suppose.
Oh, and I've slammed the receiver of a normal cord telephone onto a desk so hard it broke off the whole earpiece. Same girl. Looong time ago.

-you achieve expected sattisfaction- or not

there's a lot of phones out there to choose from
there's always a better one coming

It is because girl issue is more interesting(and exciting) than our sexy X1
if your willing to thow a phone over a girl its time to get a different chick.
now i agree the x1 is very sturdy my phone has taken acouple falls. all of them battery cover and battery came out of the phone it self. the pices were acouple feet apart. minor scratches in the plastic ring around the 3.5mm jack and my batt cover is scratched. my slider is still nice and stiff and i have no peeling plastic, no cracks. have had the phone for almost 2 months and goes through more usage then phone reviewers review phones.
My phone about 2 phones ago hit the wall with max force I remember.
During a night shift, for some reason I had a moment of blind rage
What sucked was that all my contacts was stored on the cell and it was totally destroyed =(

Pro tip: Don't throw $800 phones, least of all because of girl problems. In fact, show off the $800 phone to attract more girls (and more girl problems ^^).
As for me, I never throw my phones but it's good to know that it's durable; I always carry my phone in my left pocket, and when I'm skateboarding my left leg is almost always forward (in other words, when I fall I tend to land on it or it will eject from the pocket if I'm going very fast). My SE K550i survived plenty of falls, let's hope that X1's quality construction does the same.

The "Stupid thing i did to my HD2" Thread

Hello there.
At first, I'm german and this is my school english and i wasn't realy good at school, so i'll try my very best and hope it will be readable.
I have my HD2 now for 5 month so it near to the half year.
As you know it'S not the cheapest thing in the world i had a few moments with it when i thought to myself: "God how stupid was that?".
The first moment i was thinking that was in the first week of using my HD2.
It was in the morning. standing in front of the mirror in the bath i had my hd2 under the mirror runing some music for a better start in the day. It stood upright beacause of the rubber end that i was thinking it will give enough grip to hold it right there. i was brushing my teeth and at the and i turned on the water spit out the crap and then it happend. i thing there was condensate unter my HD2 and the grip was suddenly gone. know you have to imagine slowmotion. my hand goes to the water-tap as i wanted to turn of the water. right in that moment the HD2 slipped off from the frame above the washbowl.it arived in the moment when the water stoped an the last drop was gone. there was my HD2 in the washbowl dry as the desert and looked into my face as it wants to say " you know that was lucky you stupid ashole". And that was exact that what i was thinking right in that moment.
no scratch and not a tiny drop of water on it. that was nearly a miracle.
the second time was very evil. i had to add the fact that i have a cat.
so i thougt, make it save to carge my HD2 and searc the highest point in the house. so i put it on top of my closet. i thought that the cat would never get up there and know the suprising thing in this story. the cat didn't got up there ever. to be true the cat didn't have anything to do with that .
i was in another room and then i heard that sound i never heard before. i never heard it because i didn't know the sound of vibrating HD2 on my hardwood closet. then there was another sound. i think it was the sound of a faling HD2 and the alu cover flewing around the room.
as i got aware of that i went into the room my HD2 was charging and it was on the floor screaming for help. so what happend was i didn't expect that the vibration of a incoming call was that hard, that my HD2 could fall of the closet. so it falls 2 meters down throws the back cover away and that was all. No scatches no broken display nothing. just the back cover falls of. the phone was still ringing and the first thing i said to my mother who was calling : "you nearly broked my HD2". I will never put it on top of anything. from that day on i'll charge on the floor.
so i've had a few moments like this and till today there is nothing broken or scratched. when i clean the disply it looks like fresh out of the box. so i think im the stupidest HD2 user on earth and i'm happy that this thing is the strongest phone i ever had. the first time i think that the mony was good invested.
so what about your storys?
ps.: hope my english wasn't that bad.
Guten tag lokiderelb!
Your English is certainly better than my school German!
I personally have a story from less than a few minutes ago.
I popped the HD2 on my work desk (which is quite smooth and slippery) next to my keyboard, and near the edge of the desk.
I did think to myself it was a bit near to the edge, but the keyboard is in the way, so I can't knock it, right?
What did I do? I knocked it, *with the keyboard* and it bounced off the desk, onto the handle of my chair, onto the foot of the chair, then onto a solid floor.
About a metre off of the floor, with several obstacles along the way
It ended up screen-down on the floor, a wash of fear went through me as a million pictures of smashed HD2s and iPhones* flashed before my eyes, like my life would in a near death experience...
I picked it up, making sure I didn't run it over with my chair (that would be my luck!) and slowly turned it around. Now, you know you get that fear wash through you, and a much better wash of relief? Well I got the latter.
My HD2 is now firmly on my desk, right in the middle!
* (my mate has broken several iPhones like that)
I can hear my heartbeat while reading your story
I wonder where is the limit to get this phone broke.
I saw pictures of broken displays and everyone knows the "knife vs HD2" movie on youtube. (i never will be able to give that a try).
ps.:thanks for the compliment.

With all due respect, just because you dont agree with my opinion, it doesnt make it invalid and it doesnt make it spam.
It was just meant to be a bit of humour about my regret of having purchased this phone.
So than it was ment ironic or some other kind of humor. But it would have been easier to understand with some of these --->
I got over excited on the day got it and nearly bricked it by flashing, funny thing is been flaahing my T/diamond 1 & 2 for ages lol, luckily this website saved my ass
Okay. Here's my story.
I like to listen to music a lot with my HD2. it was after 2 weeks of owning the device, (TMOUS), and I JUST took off the silicone case it came with because it made it hard for me to slip HD2 in and out of my jacket pocket.
Anyways, I was listening to music with the pair of earbuds connected to the device, and I saw this stray cat right in front of me. The cat was friendly for some reason, and started to rub on my legs.
So i bent over to pet the cat.
As I bent over with my arm extended, the earbuds pulled my phone from my pocket, and since I was leaned forward, the phone slipped out!
I haven't experienced that kind of slow motion yet, but it happened. I immediately moved my handto follow the device, but my hands were too slow or far away to save the phone from hitting the asphalt road.
At the last second my foot somehow moved on its own, and broke the fall.
I have a slight scratch on the corner of the phone, but it's pretty concealed with the case.
I'm NEVER taking off the case again.
Put my digital camera back on the desk without really looking... oops, actually on the HD2 that was exactly at the same place. Got 2 scratches on the screen from the screws on the camera bottom, after 3 weeks...
LOL Funny stories. Well, my story is short and it doesn't have a happy ending. I went for a walk and used my 4 day old HD2 as an "MP3 Player". I pulled it out of my pocket and dropped it face down on the sidewalk. CRACK. The glass shattered. The end. The moral of the story is, a touchscreen phone is not a "walkman". One fumble and it's going for expensive repairs.
Funny/sad stories This is for the HD1, so apologies for cheating, but it was still in the last year (October)
I cancelled my phone insurance two months into owning my HD. That very day I left it on an outdoor table with friends for one minute while I popped to the loo. This was the very first time I'd decided not to treat it like a real-life baby, and I paid for it, because I returned to a phone dripping in beer and my friend with a very guilty expression.
It survived almost working for three months, but then I got annoyed and got the HD2
Anyway, anyone want to buy an HD1? It's in excellent condition

mine's not too funny it's more of a mystery.. (crazy ninja face)
one day i put the phone in my pocket, nothing special, walking around etc, i took it out of my pocket and the camera glass was smashed to bits
to this very day im still clueless
i guess i need bigger pockets
*eh...
For some reason I double posted on an accident.
Sorry.
Haha that was an awesome story! but cmon, you cant blame your mum for it hehe
I was just thinkin before i read the post that someone will say "i bought one" and lo behold some one did. if you dont like the phone, RETURN IT or give it to me! i wont mind having two hd2s!
i was browsing on the web..
while i waiting the youtube buffer( the internet here so slow....)
i hand on my hd2 and start a movie clip..
i was also charging my itouch with that d*mn broken cable
because of something i want to put back my hd2 on the desk
and i touched that d*mn cable and i get electrocuted
and my hd2 fell to the floor so hard...
since then, i charged my itouch far away from my hd2
sorry for bad english
Bent
I crushed it in the car door. Now the LCD is cracked and the chassis(?) is bent so the battery cover won't fit. Does anyone know if its worth selling it for spare parts (e.g. camera module/buttons/batteries)?
Well, I bought a Case-mate Barely There for HD2 and put it on. And for the 1st time put it off it nearly scratched my HD2 corner. I returned it right away. That's my only sad story

Gorilla glass won't save you if you drop her!

I know there is already a post for dropping your tab but I just want to emphasize that it is very easy to drop her as the size of the tab, it's hard to have a good grip/control of the device. It's not like you could easily put it in your front pocket or hold it tight in your palm.
This is nothing news but in case you're naive as I was...
After using the tab as the phone for a few days, I seriously doubt that I will use it as a phone again (perhaps it's just me, clumsy boy). I dropped the thing onto the tile floor while trying to scan the barcode, the screen is...gone. That's right, $650 (after 4 days) is now sitting in the closet waiting for a miracle to happen
To my surprise, Samsung can't do sh*t about it. This makes me rethink about owning Samsung devices (laptop, TV, monitor, DVD drive). I know it's an accident but you got to be able to repair/replace the screen!!!
I'm still trying to contact different phone #s to see if they could repair it.

Look for teardown pics/videos and screens should be on ebay by now
On devices such as these, I would've gotten insurance. But its too late for that. Sorry for your loss.

Although this is the least that would interest you right now, but can you give a description of how it fell on the ground. Did it fell with the screen down? Or did it fell on its back, sides? This info could be great for knowing how to protect the Tab.

It landed on the back and flipped over. I was holding it about 3" up.
Thanks for the condolences guys. I will keep watching out on eBay.
Sorry for your loss but I don't see how me breaking my new toy would make me think twice about owning Samsung products in the future or any other manufacturer.
Next time, get a protective case for such a device.
Thats a sad sight
But ive dropped mine from about chest hight onto a pavement on the Tabs upper left corner and I have no scratches at all. Guess I was just really lucky.

I have dropped mine, while in a soft case from an old netbook (9 inch) from about 1,5 meters to concrete. It landed on its edge and then face down, and miraculously absolutely no damage was made!
It is very creepy thinking how easily silversubie's got ruined!
I guess i was too damned lucky at the time.
I can't imagine parts being available sooo soon since it was just released. And I wonder if the bigger Gorilla Glass makes a difference as opposed to smaller screens like N1. Cause my N1 fell about 4 feet off something I had it set on and the glass I believe hit the metal on my chair. I picked it up and the screen protector was torn but no damage on the screen itself. I assuming the protector help but a there were no damage. I was please with the durability of the Glass on there.
I wish you luck finding part or getting it repaired. Good luck
To OP, did you have a case on your tab?

No, I didn't have protected case. This is the 1st tab I eva own so...noob here Again, I'm completely admitted that it's my fault, well, it's an accident but Samsung telling me is not repairable is unacceptable. YMMV.

Maybe i am mistaken but i think is against the law refusing to repair a product that is in production. Giving you a price that is way to much to be repaired is one thing but refusing to do so... you should talk to a lawyer.

As with anything like this, the bigger the glass coverage, the weaker it will be at certain points. The damage on that screen would indicate a higher height than what you've suggested, but there's lots of factor points.
Obviously the screen on the tab is going to be a bit more fragile than that on a Galaxy S, because it's so much bigger. Did it hit something or did it drop flat. By the sound of it, it contacted the ground more than once, at different impact locations (It initially hit, then bounced and made impact again on another leading edge. It may have survived the initial impact, but the impact from the other point was probably too much for it.
Damn unlucky mate, that's all I can say.
Will your home insurance not cover it, as it was done within your house?
Omg, sorry man
What's all the fuss about the "Gorilla" glass. Honestly it's a shame it can break so easily. I was going to buy one, but am seriously reconsidering now
And Samsung refusing to repair it is just unbelievable
I was thinking about using it as my phone but if I have to put on top of it a protective case it will be even bulkier. Maybe better go with a Dell Streak... (Seems to survive shocks better)
Anyway, sorry for your loss...
Thanks to Tiamath99 & risq for the suggestions. I will have to check them out. I already filed a complaint with BBB. Will have to see what the outcome is.
To be honest, I love the Tab a lot and kinda miss it. But with this quality, especially with 2 kids in the house, i will prolly look for a cheaper tablet (Archos, name_your_favorite_here). If it happens again, I dont' feel too bad about the price tag. I know you could get the protected case but I don't think they could guarantee 100% protection.
Also, as time goes by, I'm sure eBay will pop up with replacement glass. I'm just still very unhappy about the jerk @ Galaxy Tab S help line Alex Nen @18773924252 (I guess I should call a different #) told me that Samsung can't do anything about it.
If you have seen other posts, the users can't even register the tab @Samsung site. When I first called in and request a repair service, the rep told me I will receive an email within 48 hours and call them back. I waited for a week no email. Then I called in again, another rep told me that the Tab is so new and they don't know how to handle repair LoL And when I tried to submit repair request from Samsung site, it keeps telling me that my address is invalid and won't let me go to the next step. WTF?
So, in short , be prepared and be careful with your tab as Samsung doesn't know what they're doing. I guess it will be a few more weeks or months, they will finally know how to handle support.

Thank you. I actually very am tempting about getting Dell Streak. Decent size & Froyo ready. The local AT&T store doesn't have it yet unfortunately. I'm waiting for $99 or something similar with renewal plan.
Possible ... ?
To OP:
If you purchased the tab on a credit card ... check your agreement. Some offer "purchase protection" which will cover a loss/damage, accidental or otherwise, withing a certain period of time up to a defined limit.
I purchased a new PC and within 60 days had a flood in my home. The PC was sitting in 4" of water and was destroyed because all the major components were towards the bottom of the case. They covered the loss up to their max ($500.00us) (pc costs me $505.00us). Hopefully this is the case for you and you'll at least get something to replace it.
Good luck.
Sorry for your loss. My one year old son dropped mine from 1 meter. It survived without any damage/scratches. May be because it was kept in retail package, that it could survive the impact.
Also, never forget that it was just a tablet and not anything more than that. I mean; money lost can be earned back, but you can't reverse the time you lost mourning the damage. Get over it and buy the super AMOLED Galaxy Tab 2.0 whenever available next year
Didn't found any Galaxy replacement screen at this time but you can add the following site on your bookmark to check daiyl if available. Usualy they're very reactiv and have parts only a few days after phone available in stores.
http://shop.brando.com/index.php (for me the best)

No "How to" available at this time but you can see an open galaxy tab at

S4 amoled screen broken

Hey everyone!
Longtime lurker/first time post here. I have had the very unfortunate experience of pulling my S4 out of my pocket to check the time only to have my heart and jaw drop at the sight of a broken screen. It seems to be the same problem that others have reported where the glass is fine but the touchscreen is cracked, starting on the right side directly at the power button.
I have NEVER dropped this phone. It has been handled with great care at all times. It was always in an Otterbox Defender series case. Nothing out of the ordinary has happened to it while in my pocket (bumping into something, etc) and there was never anything else in the pocket with it. I have really enjoyed this phone and was mindful of it at all times.
So... where do I go from here? I'm looking for some good advice before I take a next step in trying to get a replacement. I do not have insurance on the phone (yeah, I know), but the price each month plus the deductible for a refurbished phone didn't sound like a great deal to me since I'm able to take care of my things for the most part. If it was an accident, I'd bite the bullet and replace the screen myself or get a new phone but this either a design flaw or a manufacturing defect. Has anyone here had success through Sprint or Samsung in getting a replacement or repair? I'm rooted and running The Blu Kuban right now. Do I need to try to ODIN back to stock for warranty purposes before doing anything from here or is there a better option for me? The phone works but I can't see or operate the screen in anyway.
Any advice would be much appreciated. Thanks!
Google... 1st search result.
Are you a homeowner? Try your homeowner insurance. I added coverage for my phones, tablets, and laptops that cover all loses. I think it only added $15 a year to my cost and the deductible is only $25.00 on a replacement. Maybe your insurance may cover the cost of a replacement phone.

Thanks for the useful reply Joe! How did I possibly forget to search for information on the subject before going through the trouble of making my first post on XDA despite being here for awhile?
Seriously... Read the thread. Its filled with disagreements as to what has been successful and turns into accusations of being too rough on the phone. I was asking if anyone here has successfully gotten their phone replaced and what to best method of going back to stock would be without being able to use the screen at all.

I know when I got my replacement for my evo 3d it wasnt refurbished it wasn brandnew still in the box and seals were not touch.Im hoping that the flaws in the screens are just because it was early in production.

More and more insurance companies are offering tech insurance and it is very affordable. I don't carry Sprint's insurance either (bad experience many years ago) I generally just keep my newest 'old' phone as a replacement in the event my new phone gets broke or dies.
It pays to shop around (or google) in trying to find good ways to insure devices. I realize this doesn't help you in your current predicament but perhaps for future reference.
You might search youtube for similar experiences which might tell you how they were fixed or offer affordable solutions for replacement.
Good luck.
Search YouTube for complete galaxy s4 teardown. A replacement screen and digitizer and frame is about $241. I've watched the 37 minute process on the video and feel it is way beyond my skill and patience. I don't know what else to tell you other than insurance might have made this easier and more affordable. Depending on where you go, who you deal with, who you talk to, this process can be expensive and full of hassle. Might I suggest, when you do get a replacement, that you invest in a tempered glass screen protector. There are topics in the accessory section on this topic. It will help protect your device better than simple screen film.

The one common theme in all these broken amoled screens under the glass are pocket users. Not one of these posts have come from someone that uses a case with holster. The gorilla glass on these phones is very strong, but the screen underneath can flex while in your pocket. I know everyone says they don't abuse their phone, haven't bumped it in their pocket, don't carry anything else in their pocket, but something that is happening is flex. With the plastic back of these phones they will definitely flex while you sit, bend, walk, or whatever during your normal routine. The amoled screen probably has a limit to the amount of flex it can handle before it fails. I know, you didn't abuse your phone but calling it a manufacturers defect is just ridiculous. Suck it up, fix or replace your phone, and next time don't put it in your pocket.

Just to clear this up... I did say design flaw or manufacturers defect. I've had many phones over the last 15 years. I have never had one break in anyway except for my Samsung Epic 4g, which took a 2 story fall (while in my pocket lol) onto a very hard surface. All it did was crack the screen a bit but was still functional for the next year until my contract was renewed.
To say that I should expect a $650 dollar phone in an Otterbox case to completely break to the point of not being able to use it just by being in my pocket in normal everyday situations is RIDICULOUS.
Should consumers really expect this level of quality? Imagine if a salesperson told you this as you were thinking of buying a phone... "Now just to let you know, never keep this phone in your pocket and then sit or walk because it'll break."
If this phone breaks in peoples pockets and isn't intended to be there, then Samsung would've/should've provided holsters with the phone.
Straight from Samsung - "Offering a highly crafted design with a larger screen and improved battery life, the sleek and innovative Galaxy S4 is slimmer yet stronger, with less to hold yet more to see." Sounds like we should expect a strong, well made phone. Not a something that will break this easily. My phone looks exactly like 4 other pictures I have found of other user's broken screens... all at the exact same spot. I maintain that this is either a design flaw or manufacturer's defect. Yes, as you said - the gorilla glass is strong. I just wish they would of made the frame stronger. Then I'd still have a working phone.
Btw, I am an unabashed Samsung fanboy. TVs, last 3 phones, monitors, etc. I talked 4 different people into getting this phone after I had it. I think normally Samsung makes great products with a high level of quality but they made a mistake on this one. I'm no longer looking forward to the S5 that comes with the required fanny pack... well, not until they make this situation right.
Now... does anyone have any info on my question on returning to stock? Thanks!
This is a tough one. I'd suggest at least attempting to contact Samsungs warranty dept. Perhaps they can offer a better solution than sprint.
Back in the Treo days I actually sent in a phone or two to palm, and got refurbished replacements.
The tough part is your defect.
I provide warranty work for appliances, manufacturers know or believe they know how and why something has failed. Glass stove tops are a prime example. Whirlpool will only cover heat fractures. I have to submit pictures of the top and, 99% of the time, the claim is rejected. Mostly because these tops break from impact or improper installation.
Point being, if you send your phone to Samsung, they may not cover it. But if you're optimistic and patient a few minutes on the phone may yield positive results.
http://m.samsung.com/us/support/service/warranty/SGH-T959HABTMB
Definitely unroot and return to stock.

LOL ok, ok, nibbling fingers

U will NEVER SETTLE with this piece of crap

after disappointing from Panasonic non branded phone my self thought to buy something branded and well customer service handset
but I had taken one chance once again with this peace of crap OPO and now feel really bad want to remove one plus logo from my signature
main reason to buy this that it has great support of Xda developers and its really feels me really proud to be part of this community where I got lots of software improvement over my OPO which makes this phone extremely good in case of software improvement
but one time by my self done a big mistake that I corrupted my efs partition that time I went to service Center 300 km away from my home which cost me 1500 as travelling and residential charges
but this time they serviced well without any cost and served in 1 day
that time I feel blessed thought after this there will no more frustration
but yesterday i was working all day and my OPO was in pocket
when I came to home surfed my OPO for 2 hr and some calling after that when I put my OPO beside in bed and I am busy in my work as per my habit I took my OPO and tried to unlock but screen not worked(thought it was started ghost touches as many users reported)
I rebooted it back and dine the same thing but no luck
then I look closer to it's screen there is small crack on screens uppermost part
but how this happened previously my self used galaxy s advance ,Nokia c6 which has gorilla glass and never happened like this
not even this my micromax android one was thrown by my baby many times but it has scratches on back but not a single problem with screen
my **** Panasonic eluga u has many software problems but not a single screen problem as I dropped many times
so I am aware of many users problem regarding screen crack
do I am precisely handling it like baby but what the price of crap this is
I called customer service they told me now it has physical damaged then it does not have any warranty
u have to pay 7000 rs for screen replacement ( here I got some blessing that on net I searched and most of peoples paid 12000 for this)
This phone cost me 22000 7000 1500(travelling to service)=30500
in this price some one will get high end phone of branded company
but what the output of 1 1
>extremely low quality of hardware ( so they managed to drop its price)

sudden death
https://forums.oneplus.net/threads/...lus-one.192975/?_e_pi_=7,PAGE_ID10,2452099009
some one will think I don't handled this phone properly
but real fact is that I am known of all issues regarding this phone and handling it very carefully but dropped previously from very low height ( where my third class micromax and panasonic phone dropped lots of time from high hight and working wrll till now) 1or 2 times but it survived with lots of scratches on plastic frame of gorilla glass.
conclusion:
there slogan is real NEVER SETTLE after purchasing this phone u will never settle forever and u will have to add more mony time to time means 1plus 1 and u gain 0
there strategy of marketing is like this
sell defective pices at low price
use low quality hardware material( scratch resistance gortila glass what a joke which cracks automatically) so more damage more money
this is Chinese company and its a real China toy with fake promises of never settle and satisfaction
so Indian users my request from heart not to buy this and go to branded products having good customerservice so though problem will raise u will not regreat
1. Efs backup you should have done (saw your previous thread on that issue)
2. Gorilla glass like any glass is not meant to stop cracks. I don't care what they say or advertised Its glass come on now.
Sorry for your luck but if your letting your baby throw devices around then this was bound to happen
So you unlocked your own bootloader and flashed stuff without taking backups before beginning. OnePlus kindly repaired this for you from the sound of it, which was nice considering it was your fault for not taking backups.
Then you dropped your phone and cracked the screen, rightly they won't repair it for you without you paying. Sounds sensible to me.
Any phone dropped can and will break, sometimes people are lucky with how they fall sometimes not. All phones break if dropped from a small height if they land just wrong. Doesn't matter what the glass is it breaks.
As for all the other "issues" that you have managed to find, if you search for any phone you will find a similar list of issues around and about for them, sometimes things go wrong.
If your phone had all of those issues that you have listed then they would have repaired it for you.
Can't say that I (and the majority of others) have ever had any of those issues.

all I want to say that this phone has very bad quality of hardware that I don't understand how its glass got broken I even not fall it down( previously when I dropped that happened 1 month before this)
I just kept all day in my pocket
at night near about 8pm I used it that time it seems okno problem at all but suddenly when I took it in hand and it seems not working and screen got broken( its not thrown by my baby )

its not thrown by my baby and I doesn't dropped by myself any more( 2 time I dropped it down was 1 month ago and there was no single problem)
every one feels irritation when their handsets got in problems when they does nothing wrong with it( previous efs problem was mine and I apolize for it but this was not mine)
I don't see how you cracked your screen without drop or when it was in your pocket you bump up against something hard or bending a certain way etc......
But either way sorry for your bad luck
