[Beginners Guide]How to root Samsung Galaxy Note [ICS][JB] - Galaxy Note GT-N7000 General

Hello XDA,
I know there are lot of guides on how to root the Galaxy Note ,but unfortunately I have not seen a guide that is clear enough to beginners that know nothing about Android. So, after hard work I have done a guide on how to root the Samsung Galaxy note and put it in your hands.
Note:I Have Also Made A Picture Full Guide So, IF This Guide Wasn't Clear For You, You Can Go HERE
Introduction:
Today, I will guide you on how you can root your Samsung Galaxy Note Gt-N7000 that has ice cream sandwich and Jellybean Android firmware. We have two ways for rooting this device. The first one is very simple because it involves install an app then get root from that app.The other method is rooting via stock recovery, it will also install a safe kernel and ClockWorkMod recovery.
Disclaimer:
I’m not responsible if something went wrong on your phone(Usually nothing goes wrong), you’re doing this on your own responsibility.
Rooting your device will void your warranty.To know more about rooting check What is rooting and it’s top 10 benefits.
Backup your Data like contacts and apps so IF something bad happened you will be prepared.
All these methods WONT trigger the yellow triangle.
Remember:.
it's Always better to backup your device before proceeding with any of these methods.You can also always check my article about How To backup Every Android Mobile Phone
Method1:Rooting via installing an application:
This method is very easy and simple but not recommended because you will have to patch the exploit (the bug) that allowed you to root which Might make your camera stop working but the camers will also work again after you unpatch the exploit. Also, this will change your phone status to modified. So, only do this if you are sure that you want to root your device easily.
Step1:Download the apk(the application) from Chainfire Original Thread.
Step2: After you have finished downloading the app. Install it by going to the directory you download it to, then click on it. If you got this error message
Go to Setting-> Security-> Tick “Unknown Sources”
Step3: Now open the app and click “Root device”. As showen.
Step4:Now you will get this screen so click “Grant”.
Step5: Now your device is rooted but,for Security reasons you have to tick “Disable Exploit” & “Disable Exploit on boot”. IF you had any issues with the camera than untick these options.
Step6: Now close this app and go to you app drawer where you will find a new app called SuperSu,click on it and when it opens it will ask you to update the binary so tab on “Continue”.
Finally this means you are rooted,Hooray!
OR
Method2:
Rooting with Stock Recovery+Safe Kernal + CWM Recovery: [recommended]
Requirements:
1-You will need to download the kernel based on your rom from HERE (Download the .zip file only). You will find the kernel version in the “Setting-> About phone”. If you found problems to find your kernel don’t hesitate to ask.
Let’s Start:
Step1:Copy the .zip file to your External SD card
Step2: Now shutdown your galaxy note completely. Then, boot into recovery mode by holding the volume up+ the home button, Now press the power button ONLY for 5 seconds.(Keep pressing the Volume up +Home button after you see your phone model screen)
Step3:After then you will see the recovery menu,Now choose “install update from External SD”. And choose the .zip file we downloaded earlier .
Step4:Then choose yes. Now your phone will install the root. After your phone reboots you should see SuperSu app in your app drawer.
Hooray You’re ROOTED
NOTE:This method will root your phone + install CWM recovery but if you wanted to only root then follow method 3.
Method3:Rooting with Stock Recovery:
NOTE: This method could brick your phone if you wipe your data\factory reset. So, make sure you don’t wipe data\factory reset. Or root using method 2.
Requirements:
Download these files:
1- Root_Busybox_1.20.2.zip
2-Root_SuperSU.0.95-FreeSpace.zip
Let’s Start:
Step1:Copy both files to your External SD card
Step2: Now shutdown your Galaxy Note completely. Then, boot into recovery mode by holding the volume up+ the home button, Now press the power button ONLY for 5 seconds.(Keep pressing the Volume up +Home button after you see your phone start.)
[COLOR="DeepSkyBlue"[SIZE="4"]]Step3:[/SIZE][/COLOR]After then you will see the recovery menu, Now choose “install update from External SD”. And choose the “Root_SuperSU.0.95-FreeSpace.zip” file we downloaded earlier .And choose yes.
Step4:Now go back to the main recovery menu,Aslo Choose “Install update from External SD” And choose the “Root_Busybox_1.20.2.zip” file we downloaded earlier. After your phone reboots you should see SuperSu app in your app drawer.
Hooray You’re ROOTED

Does it work on jb?

Method 1 does not work on Gingerbread and Jellybean
It works only on ICS

Nothing more to say.

The idea is the beginner goes and learns, using the guide as a list of things he needs to be competent at.
People want it way to easy. IMO

Great guide
As the title says, great effort!! I personally followed another guide about 6 months ago but this definitely makes it concise and easier to follow with little prior knowledge.

install the exynos abuse app and just click a button and ur rooted.

Hi, my phone is rooted following method3 without busybox. My question is can I proceed with method2 straightly or should I undo what I already did (uninstall superSU for instance)?
Thanks in advance.

Yes you can install Philz kernel from where you are.

Using method 2 encountered bootloop
Reflash speedmod solved the problem.

Does any of the method work on jb

Yes

Check on google, there a app call "1 click root"
Look very interesting to me

Kernel question
Hi!
Just came along this guide to rooting and it seems simple enough. I just wanted to ask something about the philz kernels.
I saw on the Phils kernel page that there are numerous versions for a single kernel (eg: XXLRI-AUT ver 2.7 then there is the newest i think which is the 3.99)
If ever I will be flashing that kernel do I need to use the oldest version then work my way up to the newest?
Thanks in advance!

Ngeshuu
You do not need an oldest if you want to flash
A philz kernel 3.99

help anyone?
Hi there,
SO after I went through the root process (from galaxynote2root dot com) terminal worked fine however the device will not boot up CWM. It only boots into standard android recovery mode. I switched on my phone, downloaded a root checker app and it says it my phone isn't rooted. I can't even use Triangle Away to reset my custom binary count.
I am a noob, yes, but it's not my first rooting a phone. I followed the instructions perfectly but this problem persists (and increases my custom binary count) AND I know I'm not the only one with this problem.
HELP please.

installing custom rom
can i install custom roms after this method of rooting.. please help me regarding this
hey zedomax,
I used this method to root my phone, but I'm having trouble installing stock recovery (I think) to get OTA updates.
I followed the stock recovery /unroot guide on your page (after a few tries, because it didn't seem to want to bring up the cwm menu at first). But using that cwm i installed the zipped recovery.
The problem is that when i go to the upgrade menu under the phone settings, it just keeps "searching for updates" but doesn't ever find anything. I used Kies 2 - which did show that i can update my firmware - but it also gave me an error that i have "custom software" and wouldn't let me continue on with the upgrade.
thoughts / help?
no CWM recovery for osx users with 4.1.2 note2
att sgh-i317/4.1.2 computer is a mac
i breeze right through the heimdall steps using the terminal commands provided. only my note2 WILL NOT enter CWM recovery. period. end of story. volume up + center home + power = stock android recovery EVERY SINGLE TIME.
this method worked fine under 4.1.1. i am now convinced this method is not compatible with 4.1.2 for osx users. i have not yet heard of ANY osx users who have rooted a 4.1.2 note2.
i hope i am wrong. i tried four times, flash counter = 4
Permit for share..

Everyone has checked this Rooting Method with the new 4.1.2 under linux or win????
Thanks for you help.
I should have followed up...
I gave up hope trying to root in osx. So i cut a boot camp partition and threw on an old copy of xp. I was rooted effortlessly in a couple of minutes.

does this work on 4.1.2?

[HOW TO:]N8013 Users: Use Odin to Install the New U.S. 4.1.2 JB ROM [UPDATED: 16JAN]

This thread is no longer valid or necessary other than as a guide on how to use Odin. U.S. users that are bone stock should be able to apply the update via OTA or Kies. If anyone's having an issue they can install the U.S. JB ROM by using Odin to manually replace their current U.S. ROM with a completely new copy of the U.S. JB ROM.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Basically what you’re doing is replacing your current PDA (MD5) file with the U.S. 4.1.2 version that's just been released.
To install a ROM it's easiest to use desktop Odin. You can download Odin 1.85 here…
https://www.google.com/search?q=odin+1.85&sourceid=ie7&rls=com.microsoft:en-us:IE-Address&ie=&oe=
Make sure you’ve got Kies installed on your PC because it installs the Windows drivers necessary for Odin to see your device.
Download the full and complete U.S. 4.1.2 JB ROM here…
http://hotfile.com/dl/189276711/f83...GT-N8013-XAR-N8013UEUCMA3-1357740396.zip.html
Unzip the file you downloaded. After it's extracted you should see an MD5 file. That's what you're going to install. Right-click on the Odin EXE file you downloaded and run it as administrator.
Put your device in to “download mode” by turning it off and then restarting it by pressing the power and volume down buttons at the same time. You should see an “are you sure?” message from Samsung. Accept it and your device is now in download mode.
Connect your device to your PC via USB. If the connection’s successful it should look like this…
Next, click on the PDA button and locate the file you extracted and then click start...
You’ll see the update’s progress in the message box in Odin and via a progress bar on your device. When Odin signal’s it’s finished disconnect your device and it will finish installing the new files.
That's it. Your N8013 is now running a fresh install of 4.1.2.
These are the directions I followed - many thanks!!
So, it's confirmed that it won't affect the flash counter for sure? I'm thinking of using the All-Share Cast dongle in the future and it exhibits some strange behavior if the flash counter hasn't been reset...
Will this work on n8000?
Sent from my GT-N8000 using xda app-developers app
Yes it will work the same for all note models but you need to make sure have the firmware for that particular model.
No it will not change your count, you can install stock roms of any regions as many times you want it will not change the count.
Your count will change when you root it or install a custom rom you can easily reset the flash counter
It seemed so simple...followed instructions to the tee. I just got status 7 error. Failed when I tried to flash update.zip from external SD card. Now s note is fc every second. I might have to go return my tablet tomorrow any ideas or help? I am not new to flashing roms but I haven't ever seen this.
Sent from my SPH-L710 using xda app-developers app
Flashing OTA is always tricky, think you were flashing a zip file I would not recomend it.
Also make sure the OTA is for the same version an region as your rom is otherwise it will give you errors
Did you download the N8010XXALI3 version or the N8010XXALGC version as there are two German versions in that list.
Not sure if that would make a difference.
No need to return, go back into recovery and clear the cache. Then reinstall the update. Boot into your tab, it might be a bit laggy at first but let it sit for about 5 minutes DON'T TOUCH IT. Reboot the tab and it should be fine. I had a similar issue, my tab is now flying along. For any fc you get, go into the app and clear all the stored data. IF it continues uninstall and reinstall. Remember, you are going from ICS to Jelly Bean, some apps act differently in Jelly Bean.
Riki
Just to be safe I assume I will be ok if I am rooted and dont have stock recovery. I will just have to reroot. Correct?
After you flash the German stock ICS with Odin you will get back the stock recovery.
Sent from my GT-N8010 using Tapatalk 2
When the official UK one comes out will it be easy to change to that if needed?
Yes. 2 options :
Get back to the stock ics for your region, and wait for samsung ota or
Download jb stock fw for your region from sammobile and flash with odin
Edit: assuming that you are from UK.
Mine seemed to take a few minutrs. After the progress bar on the tablet seemed to stop, I unplugged and held the power button down to reboot. Holding down the power button while holding volume up will eventually boot you into what is called recovery mode. You then select what you want to do by clicking vol up or down to select then push power button to proceed.
Let it finish... even if you have to wait 30 min
Well, I stopped the fc by clearing s note data. Thanks for the help. I'm still stuck on ics though. When I try to flash update.zip it fails to get build.prop sector 7 or something. I transferred it around a little before installing - it could be corrupted. I am going to re download it directly onto my tablet and try again. Thanks everyone for your help, I really appreciate it.
What do you think happened that made it not work at first and what did you do to fix it? I want to keep the first post updated so people don't brick their devices or have heart attacks during the process.
Will it be possible to download JB update it directly to my tablet without an external SD card?
Still it will have a binary count of 1 and the system status of "custom" so you cannot claim warranty at this condition.
Refer to the ROM threads of Balliboxer and k2wl for a list of removed apps. You can remove those apps based on their list using Titanium backup.
Theres absolutely no way Triangle away by chainfire makes binary count to 0 and system status as official. If it dose not work reset the counter again using triangle away
Samsung had added system status just recently. It is not there on the galaxy note. So we hope that chainfire et al will find a way to reset system status in the future.
I've put the link for retail asian Defy+ on another thread:laugh:, how many times do i have to tell you this?
Here are the steps for rooting-
1. Take a backup of all your apps and data.
2. Download Framaroot 1.6.0 from the thread (don't forget to thank the dev) and download 2ndinit - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1032212.
3. Copy both apk files to your sd card.
4. Enable USB debugging and unknown sources in settings-->applications.
5. Open file manager and install and open the app.
6. Root.
7. Then install the 2ndinit apk.
8. Reboot, and when the LED becomes blue, immediately press the volume down button.
9. Then a screen will appear. Now you can choose an option by pressing volume button and go up/down by pressing volume up/down.
10. Choose recovery, then choose stable/custom recovery (whichever is there).
11. Choose backup and then choose backup all.
12. Be patient while it does the job, DO NOT TAKE OUT THE BATTERY IF YOU THINK IT IS STUCK.
13. Then the options screen will come back.
14. Now you can install custom ROMs, PM me if you need more help.
Don't stress yourself so much. Grab a fixed sbf of quarx cm 10.2 or what custom sbf you like. That's simple for you
First you root using ioroot 25. It's extremely easy and there are instructions in the thread. Then I suggest using AutoRec to install TWRP 2.7. Again, very easy and instructions in the thread.
Then when you are ready to install the rom, you reboot into recovery. If you don't have an app or mod to do it for you, then you can do it manually. Turn off your phone, then hold volume down and power button till the lg logo appears. When that happens, you release the buttons and immediately hold them again. You will see a window asking if you want to factory reset your phone (as long as your recovery is properly installed, then there's no need to worry). Press power 3 times and it'll boot into recovery.
Now you can install your rom. The rom thread probably have instructions as well. It's probably something like wiping dalvik, system, data and cache. Then install the zip(s).
I hope this helps. I didn't go into too much details because there's already instructions in the respective threads and it's usually fairly straight forward and most screw ups can easily be fixed. Just remember to double check anything you install matches and is compatible with your specific model so you don't brick your phone. That's all. You should be fine.
If you have Titanium Backup like so many others, there is a reboot to recovery in options. I use it all the time.
Nice. I didn't know that. I use G2 tweak box to add it as a reboot option. But it's nice to know for other devices without that xposed module.
I'm glad to hear that.
Edit: I actually forgot something in the "guide". A bit of an oversight from me. Always make nandroid backups. They can be a huge life saver. It can be done within the recovery... Or the easier way: install online nandroid backup. You can also schedule backups with that.
