10GB instead of 16BG - Atrix 4G General

Hello i have a quick question. The motorola atrix 4g advertised that it has a 16 gb internal SD but mine only says 10 gb total available memory. why is this? i know that you never get the full storage when it comes to flash storage like when you buy a 8 gb memory card but only get 7.6 gb usable but why 6 gb missing on the atrix. am i the only one?

That's correct. Of the 16 gig, system files take up a few gig of space. Without the system files, your phone won't work at all.

Please take a look at this list, then add up the sizes of all partitions there. What is the result?

You're right
Atrix is 16GB Emmc.
System partition use 6GB

out of the 16gb (which turns to be 16000Mb -15.6Gb- and not 16384Mb as it should be) about 2Gb goes to data partition, 600mb or so for /system, and the rest is on cache, preinstall, webtop, etc... the remaining capacity is what is exposed to the user as internal sd

oh ok.. thanks for the explanations and link also. it helped me understand. i always thought that the phone had a internal sd and system memory separated.. i didn't know it used part of the internal sd as a system partition too.. thanks again for the explanations..

[Q] Do i need a external sd card for installing a new rom?

Maybe to backup all storage to internal sd card is not enough. BEcause its size is 2 gb.
What do you say about that? Do i first buy a sd card for a better rom changing?

You say 2 gb internal is enough to backup phone memory and rom? I have 1.5 gb free memory on my internal memory.

Should be enought. You should take full backup too with linux. There is a guide to it here in general section.

Partitioning of SD Card

Hi all,
Just after installing custom rom aokp on my phone, the /system was showing free space of 4 mb only (w/o installation of any additional apps). To install Google Now , there should be free space of atleast 90mb on /system.
Therefore, in a bid to increase the space, i got a 2gb external card. In one of the articles on net, it showed increasing the space on sd card (through SD card partitioning via Rom Manager). I though that this would make my EXT-SD a part of the internal storage and help increase the space on /system. However, after following the procedure, the space on my internal storage reduced from 1.7 gb to 480 mb while USB storage increased from 5.7 gb to 7.4 gb.While it did nothing to the EXT-SD.
Now can anyone please tell me a way to Reverse it and also how to increase the space on /system to install Google Now.
Apart from this i tried APP2SD to make space on internal storage (as it mentions "MOVE TO EXTERNAL SD") it also does not move the apps to EXT-SD, rather it moves to USB Storage w/o creating space on /system.
Please help.

[Q] Why is phone storage 8.94GB after installing ROM?

I used to have 6GB free from my 16GB GS4. I installed Omega ROM and now it says 2GB free out of 8.94GB. Can I get them back and still use the rom?

That's normal if you downloaded a lot of apps, or created a few nandroid backups.
If you have videos in the phone that also uses a lot of memory, pictures uses memory.
If you are like I am, I keep about 2 GB of MP3 songs on my phone, that's takes up
a lot of memory too.
Check for nandroid backups in either your clockworkmod folders if you use cwm recovery
or in your TWRP folder and sub-folders if you use TWRP recovery for backups.
Nandroid backups take up a lot of user available memory.
Our phones have a total of 16gb memory (a little less due to the formatting overhead).
Within that memory there is a pre-allocated partition of approx 6gb designed to
be used by the firmware/rom and it's associated files, images and cache.
The size of that partition cannot be changed by the user and if you flash a rom
which is 2GB in size or 1GB the total free available memory for the user will
remain the same, it will not add or subtract from the total free space to the user.
Good luck!

s4 has 9.13gb max free, you need to enter recovery and wipe a lot of things from internal memory
be carefull with your data
after rom flash, should be around 8gb 8.5gb (with gpe roms)
Did you make a backup using your recovery and stored it to your internal storage? That could take up A LOT of space!!
What's cached data?
It has taken up 1.42GB of my memory

I rooted my S4 16 GB and installed CM 13. After installation it show's 9gb of free space. I wiped everything and still showing occupied 7gb of space. What's the right way to wipe and how I get at least 11+GB.
probably you have to wipe your internal storage to have 11gb

The storage is not one contiguous lump, if you have 16gb it is chopped up into a lot of slices Cache 2gb, system 1gb, tmpfs 900mb, and it goes on.
The /data partition is limited to 9.1gb.
to mess around with these partitions is very dangerous but i have seen it down on other devices, mostly old htc devices.
You can't increase the storage size.
Only the GT-I9500 has the possibility of increasing the actual internal storage space available to the user to 11GB.

Get space back ?

Hello |
After installing custom rom , and making a nandroid backup of original rom (without app installed) , I was left with 800 mb
free on the internal memory.
How can i gain more memeory?
To flash again and wipe internal storage as well ?
Thanks.
Your backup is probably taking up significant space, possibly several gigabytes. Look in the TWRP directory and copy the backups off the device and delete them from the device (or better yet, just backup to an SD card). Otherwise to go Settings - Storage and tap Internal Storage and see what is taking up the space, and delete as necessary, pay attention to Cached data space, that can easily grow to several gigabytes as well, tapping that will prompt you delete all app cache data which is generally safe to do.
Will wiping internal storage help? lol... yes, of course it will if your space is used up by files in internal storage.
Thanks
Even after moving backup to external sd. There is only 4 GB free, out of 16 GB. App is about 2 GB .
It seems strange ........
