anyways, real answer.... dont quote me on this because im not 100% sure, but i believe any device with an IMEI can be blacklisted and this goes across carriers. IE: get blacklisted on tmobile, itll be blacklisted on att also. someone correct me please if im wrong

I would guess technically they could block any IMEI number they wanted. Sort of like MAC filtering on a network.

Never stolen anything in my life. My friend wants to buy one from CL but is afraid the seller might report it lost later on and tmobile then blacklists the phone. However i read that this phone cannot be blacklisted since it comes unlocked...

Yes the phone can be blacklisted. Tmo and Att are suppose to have a database so phones , with Verizon and. Sprint joining the database later this year

I have sold and bought a few phones on CL and never had a seller call and report it stolen. Not saying it won't ever happen. I do always get a receipt with price and name and signature of the seller. Every time.

Yes but i was expecting this to be about the illegal LTE usage.

How come your friend just doesn't get it from the play store? It's a lot safe.
Again what everybody else says, a buyer can report it stolen if they want to (or if the device was stolen and resold in the first place).

Definitely. Swappa and eBay are also good sources. Just make sure to use a bit of good logic and common sense and there shouldn't be a problem with either. Hell, I bought my mint N4 off swappa, got it in 2 days, and it was as mint as mint gets. Same goes for when i bought my galaxy nexus, except that was on ebay.

I could be wrong, but the only blacklisted phoned I've ever encountered, and this has only been recently I've started even seeing this, are phones that were bought on the subsidized plans and then the contract wasn't fulfilled.

any device that is registered on any network can be blocked/blacklisted by the account holder or if the EIP isn't paid off on a cancelled account. the IMEI is then unable to be used on any carrier within the US. You can still use the device in Canada or overseas with a local SIM card. the blacklisting is only here in the States.

What's the point of doing that? Unless they have an insurance of some kind it doesn't make any sense.

Yeah I understand that but in my experience T-Mobile won't kill the IMEI on a stolen phone without a few things in check first...like a police report and stuff. I live in Philadelphia, you know what its like calling the cops and filing a police report for a stolen cell phone lol...

The seller sold me a working phone, few days later reported it stolen. So he profited off me and also got a new N4 for a small deductible.

Yeah with a police report. That's law here in PA at least. I assure you of that, had a phone stolen out of my business last year, called T-Mobile...wouldn't even replace it on my insurance without a police report.

If you got the bill. Sure.

No, warranty is non-transferable in normal circumstances. Call Google for clarification, though
It was purchased from a T-Mobile store if that matters

Why should it? If he owns the bill everything should be okay. Sold a phone once wich still was in warranty period. Just copied the Bill and everything was OK.
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda premium
Might work that way in the US, but in the UK a warranty isn't always transferable regardless of having the original POP because the device is technically 2nd hand and most warranties state it's for the original purchase only - definitely that way for the company I work for. If the original owner registered the unit for warranty then you're screwed. If not, you might be able to get away with it
I live in the us. Any way to check online?

Yes you can...I had a similar issue...bought off craigslist...screen had major flicker issues....if you get a hold of the person who sold you the phone and have them give you the receipt..then you can RMA it only through LG because its from t-mobile...mine was bought from google so google has the RMA processed.
Ya bought one from kijiji Toronto on wondering the same thingHe bought his from the play store...
Okay so let me update this so i can get a better answer. If you did not purchase the device from Google Play you'll have to contact LG for warranty service. http://www.lg.com/us/support-mobile/lg-LGE960
If its from T-Mobile call customer care and get a warranty exchange if your phone line has the the device warranty.

Nexus 4 (used on ATT previously) not working on T-Mobile

Hi All, I seem to be having a unique problem. I've searched the Web, gone to a T-Mobile store (A bunch of useless idiots), called Google Nexus support, called LG (Equally as stupid as the T-Mobile employees) They could not help me in any way whatsoever. As the title suggests, my Nexus 4 is not getting any signal with a T-Mobile SIM inserted. I used the phone on AT&T for 2 months with no problems at all. I've tried multiple T-Mobile SIMs and AT&T SIMs and the results are always the same. The phone is pure stock. No modifications. If anyone has any sort of knowledge or experience with this issue, your comments will be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

are you using the tmobile apn settings?

Check Access Point Names (to verify using a Tmobile APN)
Also check Network Operators to select automatic or T-Mobile.

There seem to be a lot of n4's that have issues connecting to or staying connected to t mobile service. As for a fix, dunno.

Been fine on my Nexus, course I've only used T-Mobile with mine, I haven't been on AT&T with it.
Also Phone companies don't seem to be in the habit of blacklisting phones, In fact there's been quite a few people pushing for them to blacklist IMEI and such in the cases of say stolen phones and such, but many just simply don't have a database in place for it.

There is a chance that the former user was a tmobile user who has tmobile insurance which uses asurion. There's a good chance that he committed insurance fraud and reported the nexus 4 lost or stolen. Asurion will then blacklist that phone for that carrier. Tmobile themselves don't blacklist the phone, but asurion does.

Only option is to call your provider. If they won't fix it. Then Switch your provider.

Switching providers will I be able to use it?
From T-Mobile to at&t go phone?
Sent from my Nexus 4
You may have to dispute the block with the original carrier that added it to the block list. They may have flagged the phone as lost or stolen, and while it may work on another carrier, it may catch up and get blocked there as well.

Well then your SOL. What you are trying to do is illegal and you will have to deal with it. Carriers are starting to share the Blocked IMEIs so even if you switch carriers you may still not be able to do it.
As stated, pay off your legal contract and they will unblock it.

You can try this app: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.droidgram.bladeunlock
Really effective thing, to unlock you have to open the app, press menu, press Relock Phone and press Ok/Yes.
Of course you cannot unlock it yet until you fully paid it off so wait until that's done.

I think that legally you are under no obligation to return the device. They mailed it to you, it is now yours.
Of course, its absolutely not the right thing to do...especially with a pair of companies you are in an ongoing relationship with (who you have alerted to the problem). Would probably just get the IMEI locked out or something and be left with a useless brick and bad karma.

The rules exist more to stop companies form sending something you didn't order and then billing you for it (or sending a collections agency after you). It is designed to stop scams and fraud, but it still applies to honest mistakes and accidental shipments. Basically if you receive something in the mail that you didn't order, it is considered a gift and is yours to keep.
I'm not saying he should keep it (he absolutely shouldn't), but just pointing out the rules.
Interestingly enough, while this applies to physical goods, it is not really true for money. If your employer accidentally cuts you an extra paycheck, or your bank makes an error that leaves an extra $100 in your account, that money is not yours to keep. Your employer has a number of rights enabling them to recover the money (varying by state) and banks have a very long time to figure out that they made a mistake and take it back from your account (and come after you if there's not enough left in the account).
If you do the right thing in either situation, you can't really be harmed. I saw a story once where some woman ordered an ipad from best buy, accidentally got 5 ipads, reported it, and they opted to let her keep them all in the spirit of the holidays!

Got scammed with a fake Galaxy Note 8.0 . Buyers beware...

So I tried to save some money by buying a Galaxy Note 8.0 online through Alibaba.com and boy did I screw myself. I should of just bought one here in USA or one from a reputable seller. They said it was original before I bought and of course I trusted them but WOW. It doesn't even have an S-Pen that's how fake this thing is.lol... So after messing with it and started downloading games it's not bad but with no S-Pen I think the Galaxy Tab would of been better geez...lol... What's make this even worse is that I did a factory reset and now my wifi ain't working. So now I'm screwed big time. I'm not much of a cell tech but I sure wish I could at least root it and have a different room so i can be at least a little happy with it. Can anyone help and send me a link where I can start. Any help would be much appreciated. Here's some pictures for those that have one so you can see the difference. You can't really tell but it's a knock off alright. Now I enclosed a picture of the build and it looks like it's rooted so if it is can I just load clockwork and install roms? Thanks again friends.

What you've described is fraud. You are not responsible for shipping charges when there has been material misrepresentation. I don't know what bank you use, but my bank would have those charges reversed in a heartbeat.

I'm curious, how much did they burn you for?

I returned a tmobile hotspot that didnt work to a Chinese company on ebay. They kept my money and ebay and papal was no help whatsoever. So your suspicions may be right.

They burned me for 350 USD. I'm complaining and I won't stop even if nothing gets resolved. I told the seller I don't trust them for a refund after they lied about their "supposedly original" product. So they said they will refund me 200 and after I receive it, then to send it to them for a full refund but I'm trying to go for full refund if I can....
