s4 outdated in 2 months... - Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

aren't you guys afraid the s4 will get outdated once KLP gets pushed in may? judging by how slow sammy, htc and all these companies are in pushing the updates, I personally am afraid it will take months for us to get KLP. opinions?

So what would you suggest?

Didn't stop people buying the s2 when that came out with gingerbread and Ics was looming.
There's always an update looming that's called life get used to it or buy a nexus.
The only ones who truly care are the nexus guys and the ones in the forums posting loads of new threads just to say "I WANT MY UPDATE AND I WANT IT NOW OR SO HELP ME I'LL NEVER BUY ANOTHER SAMSUNG AGAIN" which is stupid because they end up buying there next flagship device

it is not true that only the nexus guys care about because when you expect an update even devs hold back because they say that it wont be worth spending time on deving for a firmware that will get old very soon. but if you pay $700 for a phone i do not think you like to hear that you gotta wait months to have a major upgrade like KLP.

It's always a problem, and will remain so. Expect to get the update in 6 months.

Personally I think samsung is quite good at updating their devices. I mean, their 2011 flagship the S2 is going to get the 4.2.2 update. They won't abandon S4 as soon as that. Hopefully, S4 will continue getting updates for at least a couple major versions.

That's the price you pay for not having a nexus and I didn't say that others don't care I said nexus guys care and others post loads of threads about when the updates coming to there phone.
So your expecting something that took several months for Google to make for the nexus and when its released these manufactures have to rewrite their code into the new update and for several phones how fast do you really expect that to happen

What can we do? Only buy nexus? Gotta wait. Sammy has been the best at updating the android software. The S IV will be the only flagship running 4.2.2 besides the nexus line. I think that is great,

Why get an S4 if u can wait for an S5.... why wait for an S5 when u can wait for an S6.... why wait for an S6 when the S7 would be out soon after.... why wait for the S7 because we clearly know the S8 will be out soon after that....
do you see a problem with this waiting? you end up stuck with old boring behind the times tech...

lol nah we dont have to all get nexus. i think this time is a little different from the past, since s3 and s4 are pretty much similar(at least for the mainstream user) and KLP seems like a bigger update than the ones google usually pushes. it is true that tons of people bought the s2 while still having to wait foe ics but the s2 i think was a bigger upgrade compared to the s1 vs the s4 not being that much of an upgrade compared to the s3

Its the same with all types of technology... PC's, Cars, fridges, TVs, washing machines, i think the only thing that hasnt changed in 30 years is Toilets.... (cept some crazy japanese ones...)
It comes totally down to personal preference, affordability, and need vs desire for when people choose to upgrade.
I have a friend who is still using the ORIGINAL IPHONE 1.... as he has no need for upgrades and as such hasnt... it does what he needs and thats that. Me on the other hand, ive had my S1 and S2 skipped the S3 becoz Dorrimanx kernel for the S2 has brought it sustained life for a long period of time. So i am now ready for an upgrade, S4 is definitely my cup of tea... (so to speak)

Following Samsung's trend,
The Samsung GALAXY S 4 will get Android Key Lime Pie probably in November (6 months after May)
The Samsung GALAXY S 3 definitely even later, possibly even early next year.
The question is are you willing to wait?

I would Iove to wait for a Nexus device to come out with KLP but what are the odds of one coming out for Verizon? Probably very little so, I'll most likely have to go with the S4

No official gingerbread

samfirmware just tweeted some bad news, it looks like samsung has stopped working our vibrant t959 we wont be getting gingerbread from them .
NO GINGERBREAD FOR THE VIBRANT?? Oh dear, oh dear! 1 year old device. No subversion updates? Ffffuuuu!
Enviado desde mi SGH-T959 usando Tapatalk
Seems like Samsung is a retarded company. Didn't the vibrant sell the most out of the US galaxy s versions? Not giving support to such a huge user base is terrible PR move.

Can they really be so stupid to make vibrant the only phone that will not get gingerbread, even low end galaxy phones will get it in time. I just cant believe this, no more Suxsung for me.
If anyone plans on suing samsung, this time it better be real.. Samsung is stupid.
Neveragain# crusade should now commence...
Edit* on second thought, maybe I shouldn't jump to conclusion that we won't get gingerbread just because there's no leak, yet, or because of leaks.. . Samfirware don't even have a leak for the fascinate and it sure is getting gingerbread based on the leak that came from somewhere else..
well samssung sucks (( never samsung phones in my hands
Mine already has gingerbread
And even with the so so battery life its still better than any firmware that samsung actually released. I never use GPS so that's a none issue for me.
F#%@!!!!
And I was waiting so patiently for the last 6 months
Oh well, If I want official leaks, I'll be sure to get a Nexus next time.

yea i feel your pain guys .. I only have a captivate ..
you guys need to understand tho , motorola and many other companies have device that came out this year and dont even have gingerbread , samsung is doin a fair job at updating there device , imho I think its more of a carrier thing , witch phone get there updates or not , seeing how most of the SGS family got Gingerbread already .. its not like its hard fo rsamsung to release this update , most likely it will be magically leaked at one point Im sure ..
http://www.gizmocrunch.com/android/4305-samsung-galaxy-s-android-gingerbread
what happened to that?
^ honestly, i can live without gingerbread... But the idea that the rest of the US versions are getting leaks here and there and not our device seems unfair... But seriously, the hell with the leak as long as we'll still get a taste of gingerbread later when it's all baked and ready...
To leave the vibrant out in the cold with support is wrong, the least samsung could do is be fair about it..

And yet the dumbshits STILL want to reward Samsung by buying the SGSII or the Hercules.
Samsung doesn't update their year old phone, people then proceed to buy the newest and latest. While keyboard warriors rage away on forums Samsung is looking smugly at their bottom line. Seems like it is working, they are selling tons of S2's last I heard.

Others like me are going to get other phones. Samsung has a long past of ****ing up Android phones, just look at, well, EVERYTHING they've released before the SGS2. Just one issue after another that was never fixed or updated.

They're Flagship device is running the latest version of android.
Last years flagship device was running the latest version of android. If they updated last years device Samsung would loose money. Not everyone has the money to buy a galaxy s 2, and Samsung knows that. Now if both devices had the same OS version out of the box but one was significantly cheaper what device would your average consumer choose? Common sense guys

Biggest Android Problem ? For How long support will last for Samsung S3 ?

Friends.
Android V5 is near launch in a month or two. So then Android V4 will be old.
Same samsung will launch new S4 with few more months waiting.
Update for s3 then will take even more time to come.
This procedure is going on & on with many bloatwares given by Samsung & also by other companies.
I love samsung phones & Use their phone, But support or poor support is biggest hurdel in buying s3 this time.
I am in serious confusion seeing future of S3.
It will get the update.
SGS got its update, SGS2 got its update, SGS3 will get its update.
Updates DO matter but the update plan for android 4 has been a disaster for ALL manufacturers except LG which we shouldn't even talk about as LG is the biggest joke on the android front. Even the nexus line is a failure. I almost got the nexus S a year ago just because of the whole dedicated concept but now I'm glad I didn't. I don't even think the nexus S will get android 5.
Samsung and HTC are those that I feel is the least slow with updates but still none of them will update their first flagships (SGS1 and DHD) even if they without a doubt can run vanilla ICS great. I thought Sony Ericsson learnt their lesson but apparently not as their flagship this year runs GB and that is laughable.
The only "comfort" in all this is that it's the same for all brands.

This cycle will repeat every year. If you want fast updates get nexus or you can flash roms on the sgs3 to get latest software. If you want latest hardware keep changing phones.
Also what support you are referring to? Why do you need support from useless samsung or any other manufacturer in that matter? XDA is your best support forum and you need manufacturer support only in case of hardware defect and need a warranty replacement or repair

Rumor has it Samsung, HTC, etc have early access to Jellybean in order to make their Nexii. Previously everyone besides Samsung only had access when it was released.
Whether or not this affects the update schedule remains to be seen. If it doesn't, you can either expect early-mid 2013 for the update, or flash it yourself (no company, not even some ideal hypothetical, can compete with homebrew speed).

Android 5 or 4.1 will more then likely come in December just like ics and gingerbread before that. If this is true, this gives you 5 to 6 more months with ics and I doubt the s3 will be as old as you are thinking; sure better devices can come to the market in the next 6 months but let's be real, the s3 will be able to do everything for the next year to a year and a half just fine. I've been with the HTC inspire and this thing is 2 years old yet I rarely have any lag considering I use this for everything including gaming.

Have perfect solution for u, don't by the SGS 3 and keep waiting for the perfect one, I have a Gnex and very much doubt that it will have Jelly Bean in a month or two or three , maybe more like 5 months and in the smartphone age that is like a year. Or go get a phone named after a fruit. See no one will get Jelly Bean before it makes it's debut on the next Gnex and thats just the way the cookie crumbles. Thank the fruity company for making the latest version the "best " one, at least with Samsung you get more from the next version then just S voice as they did with the 4S and a bit more power.
If you rooted, you won't bother whether Samsung update on time or not because you have everything the best XDA can offer you. If you are not rooted, obviously you are not software geek, why bother whether your GS3 running ICS, Jellybean, Gingerbread or any other version? Everything is a big problem to human if he or she want to think that way.

having a nexus phone doesn't guarantee you getting updates in the future. look at N1. and NS got it's first update pulled fast and then it took several months before a new ICS update came. That's why I don't care about the nexus line. And I think that the SGS3 will be a phone that feels fresh longer than any phone before, even with android 4.
ye, even i was thinking about that problem but then i just thought that if android 5 comes out then i will use the customised rom
Custom rom/buy new phone.
Ive had enough of waiting for retarded companies to update things.
Motorola milestone - 6 months late, not fully functional (GB)
LG optimus 3d - not available till september 2012 (at the earliest), sold with the promise of prompt ics update, instead waiting more than a whole year.
Never waiting for an update again. Just gonna buy the new phones.

They messed up on the Dec update and probably had to redo. Unfortunately, company bureaucracy works much more slowly than we do, and a new update cycle can take 3-5 months. This is true for any company that offers warranties - they have to break as little as they can.
Had they not messed it up, however, NS could have had its upgrade hella quickly.
Don't want to deal with company bureaucracy? Flash homebrew (NS certainly had them much, much more quickly). Otherwise there's still no better option.
s3 will get official JB update and may be cm11 or cm12 for the other version of androids

Well coming soon... hopefully that means SOON. Except if their is really no Flash support or no one can get it to work then forget it. I use Full sites not the craptastic mobile ones.
I really hope Samsung doesn't remove the Google Now search feature from JB (in order to keep it from "competing" with S Voice). One of the few things that bugs me about the TouchWiz implementation is how they remove the stock Android keyboard, in favor of the Samsung Keypad... which is a little ominous. Of course, you can just install the "stock" kb from the Market (if those "ports" are really as good as the stock versions; I'm using the "ICS kb" now on my Vibrant, and it seems pretty good, but haven't spent enough time with the stock kb to judge if it's the same)... I doubt Google Now will be made available the same way!

OK Samsung, W8 is out and taking buyers, time for JB OTA - now!

JB for the Note II has been out for a while now. Note II specs are remarkably similar to SGN10.1 specs. JB with Note II multitasking competes well with W8. The current configuration not so much.
So, open letter to Samsung. Time to push out the JB OTA now! You are going to start losing SGN10.1 users to W8 devices. Get your act together and OTA us dammit. This is a new device. We should NOT be made to wait like this. Pisses us off and just bad business for you.
And if you are delaying us just so your W8 devices can get a foothold you are going to have some unhappy early adopters on your hands.
Get it done.
P.S., This post will solve nothing but It felt good to vent.

Thing are done allot different in tablet mode than in normal phone mode so the fact that the note II has same hardware as note 10.1 doesn't make it easy to make a jelly bean rom for it, the interface is completly different

Nevertheless, its time to get 'er done. Samsung is making billions. Hire the software enginners and make it happen.

How long should we wait,I support the open post:good:,bring it on Samsung,we have already paid you the price.
Sadly, I don't think Samsung listen to you.

To those who would switch, it would most likely be a Samsung Ativ, so to Samsung it's the right pocket moving to the left and its still Samsung.

What concerns me is that we aren't even seeing any new test builds of the JB OTA with all the Note II goodies in them. You would think they would throw a few test builds out before the actual OTA release. Nothing on Sammy at all.
This makes me think we aren't even close.
just an fyi, but us americans aren't seeing some of the note 2 goodies on the note 2 yet. gotta wait on an update - no multiview is one.

We paid the price for the ICS and it has been updated anything else is just yet to come when Samsung thinks it's ready and or the right time for them.
Yes, it's always a good idea to try to put pressure on a company to release software they don't think is ready. I mean, we all know they develop things and just wait and wait for no reason before releasing.

Sadly, we consumers "pay the price" whenever we don't buy stock Android.
I totally forgot about CM10 tho

Is this all apps or specific apps, if not, hope samsung releases whatever needs releasing to help third party app devs implement this feature on tw
Maybe we should start flooding their facebook site on the JB update.
sadly, i would bet 8/10 people have zero idea what operating version of android is running on the note currently out of the population that has it now. the general public is completely clueless when it
comes to android.

I wouldn't expect JB out anytime soon, with 4.2 out last night Samsung probably has to start with the OS base all over again but if they had gotten to the apps then at least those are a quick copy paste but with less devs working on the S3 and Note 2 version as it is practically out we will probably see the update coming through in December late November unless they give us 4.1 and we wait for 4.2.

[News] No Android 5.0 upgrade for Galaxy S II

As stated by GSMArena website there will be no Android 5.0 update for Galaxy S2 and obviously should apply to the variants too.
Although this news is leaked from the company's insider, it may be true. This news may be highly disappointing to many. Here's the link. Go ahead check it out.

Honestly, did anyone ever expect Android 5.0 to be officially released for our device?

Thanks for making another thread to tell us. There was a shortage of them.
Extra kudos for linking to gsmarea, rather than the source.

Whaaaaat?! I thought you were being sarcastic in your first post!
What the hell is happening to xda these days.....
Edit: Nice. Two of the same threads from you!
3 major upgrades for a 2 year old phone still put Samsung as one of the better ones in terms of upgrades ...
jelly bean 4.2.2 is definitely the latest that i expected.
the s2 is too old but still good.
morover the most of us will get a new phone very soon because of the contracts.
and this phone will get android 5 or higher in the future.
Gonna upgrade to another manufacturer i think...since the uk galaxy s4 will be a snapdragon based model and not the octocore we were hoping for...key lime pie will be nice.

Still not sufficient. A 650€ flagship should be supported more than 2 years and 2 poor versions. Ics & JB...
Or at least let the community do their job...
I totally agree, and don't understand the attitude of some people here... I didn't buy the phone just to replace it at the end of contract. It's still working perfect and I don't see the need for a replacement. Samsung should just let the community handle the updates if they are to lazy to do it themselves.
S2 till it dies, and when it does, another s2.
Fu*k it, I'll buy a couple s2 when they get 300 bucks cheap here (It's still at 600 bucks unbranded, 400 branded, crazy).

we can have it by custom roms.

I hate samsung for that, but i love touchwiz and their hardware

Ok, chill out now, no need to get sentimental.
I really wanna see 5.0 and what it's all about, I'm somewhat skeptical on the gigant upgrade that would represent against JB.
If a couple of devs make it work with no issues on their ROMs I don't see why we can't lobby up and ask for that update.
I mean, samsung devs vs xda devs...I'm sticking with our troops.
One thing's for sure, if the galaxy nexus gets it, I'll burn tires right in front of Samsung.

that's too bad..
Yes, if Samsung would now release all the sources (required by the license) we could keep upgrading our devices on our own. The S2 community has done a fabulous job, and we would get some disaffected devs back if we had all the sources. This is still a great phone. I'd hazard to say that there aren't many (any?) other 2 year old phones that still run this well on the "latest" software. I agree it might be still going strong in 4 years. Due to Samsung's intransigence however I think my next has to be Nexus. But it's hard to justify giving this up. Despite a faded screen, and reduced capacity of the battery, it still screams smoothly!
