No removable battery. How do YOU survive? - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Ok, so every phone I've owned has had a removable battery. I just moved to the N4 from the Galaxy S3 because my S3 crapped out on me and this was the cheapest phone I could buy new off contract. I'm finding myself miserable without a removable battery. Hate it. With my S3 I had 4 spare batteries to carry around so that I never had to charge. With the N4, I always have to be near a charger. Drives me nuts. I know there will be times when I'll run out of juice completely before I leave work for the day (where I might not have a charger). So, how do you guys do it? Just not use your phones? I'm I'm IT and use my phone like nobody's business. I don't just leave it in my pocket with sync off and data off. It's not realistic and that's not what these phones were made for. What a stupid move by Google and LG to make the battery non removable.
Help! Ideas? Thanks.

Get a wireless charger for work and place the phone on it when it's not being used (I know they are rather costly now but it does make charging the phone effortless).

the back is easily removable, and they sell replacement batteries.. piece of cake

I have a custom kernel installed on my phone. We have some of the best kernel developers over here that cook up great kernels that allows our phone to last longer than stock. I also carry a portable external battery pack with me just in case. And I always end up not using it. LOL.
I suggest you try the phone out without a custom kernel and see how it goes from there. If you're not satisfied, root and flash a custom kernel of your choice and make your judgement. Remember, your usage will determine the amount of battery life your phone will get.

LOL. It's going to be such a hassle to remove the screws and to remove the back cover just to switch batteries. Imagine riding the subway and your phone dies. Would you take out screw drivers and a prying tool to change batteries?

I charge over night, and when I get to work Its plugged in when @ my desk. Thats how I got by with my iPhone 3S, 4 4S and 5. I don't expect the Nexus to be different.

Just flash Franco Kernel. I get awesome battery life.
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda premium

Franco kernel, and pa3....are a great combo! I get 10 hrs of heavy use and still have over 20% to spare. The best rom/kernel combo I have tried to date, actually the stock pa kernel is great as well but I use my n4 as my music player all day and Franco kernel sounds better (faux sound maybe? I dont follow the change logs as much as i should......perhaps someone with greater knowledge will chime in). So far I'm not complaining.

Thanks for the feedback. Any suggestions for a kernel on RootBox?
And any tutorials on switching batteries?
Thanks again.

Motley kernel. Do it now

Is motley under original development?

Simple answer carry a external battery pack like this one. Like carrying 5 batteries in one package.

Ok, found and flashed Motley anykernel. We'll see if this helps. Still better battery life, even overclocked?
I will also order that Anker beast or something similar. But will it for in my back pocket? I need something portable.

It would be nice if a kernel had fast charge capabilities. Would make charging off an external battery much nicer.

i keep my phone clocked at 1026mhz high/384mhz low. its still speedy, and i get great battery life, about 3.5-5 hours screen on time depending what im doing.

i'd get a wireless charger for while at work, and a car charger for when you're out and about..

2150mAh battery = 3 days on one CHARGE without a fat phone!

Finally below 10% juice left. See images. This is the battery from Verizon's site. If ENOUGH of us buy this battery, they'll make cases for it. Right now, they claim there isn't enough of a demand. I see sooooooo many people complain about battery life, but don't want the 3500mAh battery, due to its size. This IS the happy medium. Lets go folks!

This battery is only a little more than 1/3 added juice than the stock battery, so if I can get 3 days, stock users can get almost 2! The key is to use setcpu and create a profile for"screen off" and set the max cpu in that profile to 460 or so.
Good luck!

You guys are smart! I have the 8/1 leak but just about to upgrade to the new "official" leak. Yes, it's the hydra v1.0 ocuv kernel @1.15GHz. S-off, with clockworkmod 2.5.0.5. The theme is the manup revolution theme, but I'm not sure I'll use that one again because the battery meter in the notification bar is not accurate and when I try to change it, I get issues.
The main thing, besides a good bump charge, is the setcpu profile. I'm running setcpu in "on demand". Make one profile for "screen off" and make your max cpu 460 and leave the minimum at 245 or whatever. I made a 2nd profile for battery less than 25% that makes the max 560MHz. I've had NO non-responsiveness. Just always there when I need it and even with the "screen off" profile set to low CPU speed, I still hear my phone vibrate before I get the email in outlook, at work.
Any more questions, just let me know!
P.S. Check my sig to see if it answers anything else you want to know about my set-up.
EDIT: XDA members can get SetCPU for free here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=505419

This battery is a great piece of hardware. It allows the phone to lay flat while protecting the camera lens and as jermaine151 mentions, there is more phone to hold onto while typing. This is a great buy and I say that even though I paid the extra cost by going through HTCpedia prior to Verizon making this available.

i did this today with 1700 battery and setcpu to 460 screen off. it doesnt last that long with normal use....

Found out the ONE issue I have with this phone

My battery life blows and it's not for a lack of conditioning or calibration. I know how Li-ION batteries need to be calibrated and that they only last for about 300-500 charges. So I'm basically just kinda getting ****ty battery life.

Have you tried this method:

The Evo has a bigger, older, more battery consuming core.
Not much can be done about that.
If ur rooted throw on decks aosp rom with tiamat 3.3.7 kernel. Apparently that is the key to amazing battery life

Well, your issue isn't the Evo itself, it's your personal phone.
I too had a bad battery. Use or no use it lasted for 6 hours max. Said f it! Got extended battery. NOW its a manly man's phone! It's got some girth! Feels like a brick lol. But I'm also a power user. Even so, 17 hours of use on first full charge. Definitely a top mod in my book.

Try an SBC kernel cause battery calibration isn't ur answer. Also its not ur phone its ur kernel and also the governor and oc settings u set on ur phone.
free the dirk
Deck 1.3d. Tiamat 407 SBC. Conservative governor. (Start w 384min and 998max) Play w the values a little. Battery calibration app. V6 (optional). Don't see how it could go wrong. My battery has me in love w my Evo again after almost a year of owning it. Sense is a resource hawg. Until gingersense can figure out how to get the battery life froyo sense had it wont be back on my Evo anytime soon. I lost a t9 dialer going to Aosp...the theme engine makes up for that as mixer looks nice.
No kernel, voltage modification, or ROM is going to change the fact that your battery is bad.
I'm going with what Matty said as you all don't know what I've gone through with this phone. I've gotten all of the mods I was supposed to. I did everything possible I really think it's just a bad battery

Hyperion 4000 mah Mini review!

Hey everyone,
i've been rocking this.
http://www.amazon.com/Hyperion-Sams...ywords=hyperion+samsung+galaxy+s+III+4000+mah
for about 4-5 days now.. ordered it off Amazon for a STUPID cheap price.. and i must say.. wow. 5/5
I normally like Mugen better, and i'm going to get a mugen battery whenever they make one..but this a GREAT replacement for the time being..
i have a PEBBLE BLUE T-Mobile galaxy S III as well.. and the White back actually looks really nice MIXED with the blue!
Also i love the FEEL of the back.. i actually like it better then the Stock GS3 itself.. it adds more weight and SOLID feel to the overall product and i LOVE IT! it's better then a stock GS3 by far.. actually feels like it's own new phone.
The battery life? definitely top notch.. i get by 3 days sometimes with heavy usage, texts, FB.. Sync turned on GPS.. all of it.
Highly recommend this... :good::good:

The only problem with carrying it as a spare is you also need to carry the battery cover. But if you were to order two of them..... use one as your main battery and carry the second one as a spare and you don't need to carry an extra battery cover.

2. Buy $15 phone at walmart as suggested by alewis2k12, so you will have spare phone if the note goes dead. :victory:
3. Try other ROM + Kernel, to find the most suitable to your device.
I have everything updating at minimum times and BT.GPS Wifi and data on all the time and don't go through a battery in a waking day. I went through one and a half on a flight from SC to LA Using the phone the whole way for internet access and a movie.

No..all Samsung batteries.
Screen was biggest user....and brightness was set at 20%.
Governor was 'powersaver'!
Data usage/battery drain is huge at events like that where tower usage is saturated and your taking pictures and sending etc.
I knew that...but this drain was unreal.
Granted, its an exaggerated example of how poor battery life is on this device...but a viable example nonetheless.
The Note's battery life sucks.
The Nexus 7....bigger screen, also rooted with same custom Rom puts it to shame.
Wise up to it Sammy.
good point, however powersavor governator is not a powersaver lol, but as you mentioned not main cause.
Sent from my GT-N7000 using Tapatalk 2
1. Not Samsung's fault. You're on a ROM that Samsung cannot be held directly responsible for.
2. Nexus 7 is a Device with a different spec, for valid Comparison use another GT-N7000.
3. Go Stock and Report Again - Use the Original Battery.
If you're building case remember to make sure you're under Samsung's Terms of usage. I hope you all remember about the phone that blew up and user brought it up to the media's attention, and later on it was discovered that it was the user's fault (As he was trying to heat a soaked phone from an Oven).
If you're looking for help or assistance, Then I suggest you take it to the Paranoid Android Thread. I'm sure, there are users besides the General Audience that can help you out or users that may share the same issue that you have faced.
Just my N7000 cents.
Well, tablets have considerably larger batteries than smartphones, so that's not really fair.
Also, It's probably safe to assume you aren't running the same apps on either, so apps could easily be blamed.
Instagram, for example, has been known to be a battery drainer unless killed.
As others posted, I also get all day, in general, using PA - although you didn't post which version.
If you have screen display set that low, and your screen time is still the largest (what % is that, by the way? largest could still be just say, '30%'),
then I'd put your batteries under suspect. Some of the knockoffs have very little charge, regardless of what they advertise.

Sent from my GT-N7000 using Tapatalk 2
nexus 7 doesn't have 3g, turn airplane mode on the note, and battery life will double as well. Also, if you're on paranoid 0.5 and not jb, try AniDroid 0.8 kernel, you'd be surprised how your battery life improves
yeah.
I think you should bring up this issue on the Paranoid Android forums.
They sure can help you regarding this battery life issue, especially the developer, coz he will know the tweaks and changes he made on his ROM.
Rather than you blame on the device, which at the end, sammie won't held any responsible for using a custom ROM.
It has been observed that the MediaScanner is taking most of the battery in ParanoidAndroid Roms. Try stopping that.
Also you can replace the kernel and use Asylum insanity kernel to get better battery life.

Heating and Performance Issues

Hey all!
I purchased the Sprint Galaxy S4 (SPH-L720) off of Craigslist for a screaming deal of 30 bucks in April. It was a great device and at first I didn't notice the issues. After awhile though, I began to notice that it would heat up doing very menial tasks, such as web browsing. This would cause excessive battery drain and also performance issues. I have also noticed that during undemanding gaming it would heat as well. This issue isn't seen as much on the stock Touchwiz ROM (seen most obviously in custom ROMs) but is still present. So, I've a few questions for whoever is willing to help me out a little:
1. Is this issue always present on this phone, despite condition? Or is it a result of years of use? Or neither?...
2. Would a new S4 (preferably GT-i9505) have the same issues?
3. Is this a result of some difference between Sprint's variant and the i9505?
Thanks for any responses. FYI, I only use the phone over WiFi (Sprint isn't my carrier).
Same problem
Have you tried a new battery?

No; most of the reviews for them on Amazon say that they enlarge after a few charges. My sister has an S4 with that issue, and it's literally ripped her phone apart over time, separating the screen from the body and even causing the home button to fall off. If you could provide a link to a new stock battery that'd be great.

I had 6 different batteries for my S4 and never had that problem. Best thing to do is buy an OEM Samsung battery or one from a respected 3rd party such as Anker. I swear it does wonders. Especially on a device as old as this. It's a lot cheaper than buying a new phone.

Lol, the inflating battery my sister has is from Anker. So I'll probably stick with an OEM battery.

I personally always rotated about 3 batteries, using an external charger. Never had to charge my phone and always had a fully charged spare when I went out.

Pain in the neck to boot up every time though. Neat thought however.

More of a pain than charging your phone? It takes 30 seconds compared to hours.

Okay, I see your point. So does this really improve performance and/or heating issues?

Performance, no. It's a battery. It powers the device, that's it's only purpose. Battery life, yes. For performance, I would recommend trying a different ROM. A new battery should help with overheating, but could also be being caused by a number of things like apps running in the background and many other things. I recommend using Greenify if you aren't using it already.

Is the Team Wicked X ROM banner a little hint-hint?
I've found CM13 to be the best performer for me. My main concern is overheating while doing simple things like web browsing.

On my PC I have a signature, the app doesn't allow you to use banner signatures anymore. Use whatever works best for you, but if you haven't tried it I guarantee it is the most updated TouchWiz ROM for this device by far.
