Innovation - Galaxy S II General

Hi guys. I don't post here much but have been on XDA for a few years with different devices. Now on the gs2 on cm10.1 with dori 9.3. My phone is faster and has more features than my ladies gs3. Having a nose around the forum there are lots of new ROMs popping up. This is no bad thing but they all seem very similar, borrowing feature sets and bases from more established ROMs. Most of the cm based releases perform the same.
I'm not complaining (far from it) I just think we need some sort of injection of innovation to make things exciting again. Ubuntu promises a bit more fun but is a while off being a daily driver.
Do you think android is getting stale as an OS or do we have lots to look forward to?

I want to learn to port or make a ROM

So I want to try and learn how ROMs work. Or maybe that's a little bit too much to start with, maybe mods and hacks and stuff. Is there any tutorials on how to start anything that has to do with development that someone has actually used and learned from and worked with him that you can point me out to? Or at least can someone tell me where I should start to be able to learn all that I need to know?
I've done some theming and editing .xml files and decompliling and stuff so its not that I don't know anything, just don't know enough.

Yes young padawan. You have much to learn in the ways of the force.
No disrespect to the OP or anyone else, but if you have to ask how then you aren't ready.
Do some research: take apart zips, find out how things work. Learn about Android as a whole (helps to also learn how 'nix) works also, Android is of course based largely on it), and most importantly trial and error.
The force is strong in this one, I can feel it. But he must complete the trials in order to fully understand the true nature of the force.

Also, I can teach you to build from source too. I'd love to be a source based rom guy, but unfortunately, I feel that most open source roms are the same (Gummy, AOKP, CNA, and CM9 look and feel identical to me) so I don't waste my time.

Well maybe I should be searching and doing things on my own but that's what I did when I started to theme a little bit and it worked out well. But I started by seeing one of travis' tutorials and with the help of shane with a lot of things.
So basically I need some help that's all.
And I too see that CM7/9, AOKP and all those are the same. Especially the 2 versions of MIUI. So I would like to start my own thing kind of like sence and blur. Sence would be something I would be interested in doing since I loved my htc phones before this one, but since its already started I will try and work on something else.
Ill pm you xboxfanj and we'll see how I can start working on it. And thanks for your offer =).

AOKP/CNA/Gummy is kinda like Sbrissen mod for touchwiz gingerbread roms on steroids. Like xbox said, the AOSP thing has been done to death on ICS. All we're getting at this point is some pointless fragmentation between the roms.
UBER/Biggorn/Big Goron or whatever name your using these days , I wish you luck with that endeavor. I tried to do my own for a couple months and realized that I was updating it every other day thanks to what was getting merged in on the other roms. Too much of a PITA for me so I went back to theming.

Will the Nexus 7 be receiving official MIUI or CM support anytime soon?
Sent from my HTC ThunderBolt using xda app-developers app
I haven't seen anything guaranteed, and I don't expect to either ( these are community built ROMs and the last thing I would expect is guarentee) however this is a nexus device and will also have a huge user base with a greater than normal percentage of people willing to try custom ROMs , so I think on a practical note this device will get those builds as well as somany different flavors of android you won't be able to keep track of them all

Not in the least. Their themes were ugly as hell. 99% of chefs or actual rom devs for the most part shared the same feature sets, so it was mostly about themes and minor tweaks for roms to stand apart.

Naive little mens. Team Viper (or their members/devs) has been influencing many of those shared features from eclair all the way up to JB.
Once froyo was maxed out, you are right, there was a point where it was theming and/or removing apps to make the ROM lighter.

TeamViper did ( does ) great work and Dazed started out over here with our OG EPIC4G before moving over to the EpicTouch and now SG3 ... he's doing a pretty good job IMHO :good:
I liked team viper when they worked together and created random stuff like the viper wheel, but then they got annoying and flooded development with ROMs that were no different to one another and all updated at the same time with all the same features...like EVERY SINGLE ONE! Then they disbanded I guess and have been in an advisory type of roll where I think they're great individually

TP is still devving for the Nexus 7, but he's consulting in some fashion or another for a company and will be heavily involved in Windows mobile. No longer with Sprint.
You guys mean to tell me you didn't like His Hot Orange Madness theme?
Geez, what dev teams that formed here still exist? Seems like they're either disbanded or a shell of what they once were.
Not sure that any of the originals do. TBH, since CM came around, I haven't kept in touch with many of the other ROMs, dev teams.

[PETITION] Get Canonical to work with XDA

Hey guys! Recently having heard, Canonical is working with Ubuntu to release an image for the Galaxy Nexus, as a mobile OS. Now people think this is a great idea, at least for those who own a Galaxy Nexus. But what if you want it on your phone too? That's where Canonical and XDA would merge together, asking the developers and users of XDA, since most of them are knowledgeable,(trust me, you need to have some know-how to not get flammed), and have them beta for maybe several different phones, to get Ubuntu on a wide variety of phones sooner! And well, why wouldn't they do this? They're already taking a leap of faith and opensourcing everything and carriers/OEMs don't like that. So they should be able to take a smaller leap of faith and ask the users of XDA to be able to help them out with the distribution of Ubuntu for other smartphones. This would help them in getting more stable releases out to the public maybe faster for their device. Wouldn't this be a miracle? So please show support and sign! Thanks for your time!
https://www.change.org/petitions/ca...evelopers-com-as-testers-for-ubuntu-for-phone
Secnd that
but\ isn't ubuntu open source? can't we just port it anyway?
Signed
Its open source, but it isn't going to be as simple as the same files working on all devices my friend
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda app-developers app
Maybe, but it'll be easier if Canonical were to work with XDA users/developers hand in hand to make porting easier

Great idea. I came here looking for their build but then I see this and realize not yet. So yes let's get the ball rolling!
I honestly just want to be able to dock my phone and use it as a PC from time to time like the original Motorola build i remember seeing in the past.

I've signed, I love the idea of the XDA community playing a somewhat important role in the development of a potentially up and coming mobile OS.

XDA developers are amazing. Thinking of a world without xda-devs, what would we have on our phones? Since the days of windows mobile and developers here make miracles without them, phone developement by all companies would've been far slower in my opinion.
I encourage everybody to sign the petition as the outcomes would be unquestionnably great.
Thanks guys! There's no harm in trying!

Is a "Sense" ROM for Nexus 4 likely??

Not sure if this question has been answered yet or if there's already something in the works.
Has anyone heard or know of a Sense ROM thats being ported to the N4?
I do prefer AOSP over Sense any day but I love variety and switch it up up every now and then. Not to mention that I would love to see how the N4 handles it with its 4 cores and all..
Feel Free to post any Links, Rumors, Opinions, and/or leads on other similar topics.
With release of HTC M7 around the corner hopefully that will strike a match on Sense for N4!!
Thanks for your interst.
It would take an enormous amount of effort from a developer and there's pretty much no demand. So no there won't be a sense rom.
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda app-developers app
Yes it's totally possible. G1, G2, and Nexus one all had Sense roms despite being shipped with Vanilla Android. Sadly no devs here appear interested in porting Sense but, hopefully they'll port Sense 5.0. My only concern is that all the devices I mentioned I had were HTC and well they shared drivers with sister devices and this could mean a port will be challenging...

Don't get your hopes up. The Galaxy Nexus got a Sense 4 ROM but it was pre alpha and the project stopped fairly quickly as there wasn't much demand. (I mean, this is a Nexus, amirite???? AOSP is what most people want)

What ppl don't understand is that it's nice having options. Sure a majority of ppl prefer AOSP over Sense, but if one gets bored they have something new to try out & tweak. Whether it's Sense, TouchWiz, or MotoBlur.

The Nexus one had the same hardware as the HTC desire, barring different partitions and trackball. It was easy to port sense for that thing. Will be a lot harder on this phone.

It may be so but if a developer won't get as much audience compared AOSP then there's not much point in continuing and refining the ROM (squashing bugs etc). I wouldn't mind using a Sense port, and there is a good chance someone will take on the challenge, but it will likely get close to using as a daily driver.
