Looks nice, although an aluminium frame sounds like a really bad idea...

If the camera spec is real then I'd think: Why would they go back to an older sensor?? Unless the 13.1mpx sensor that's in our XZ isn't good enough...

If it's using an Exmor RS sensor, then that's not old at all but the absolute latest and greatest from Sony. It's just that it'll use an 8MP version vs. the 13MP version on the Z and ZL.

Nice budget model.

I already have a Z, so this seems to be a step down in everything but the SOC. Besides I love the 5" screen size it is perfect for reading while it still fits in my pocked.

Maybe among the phones released last year only: Nexus 4, LG Optimus G and HTC Butterfly (and their variants) have better specs (SoC) than Xperia SP.
BTW, according to the white paper, SP uses Corning Gorilla glass without a shater-proof sheet..
And Xperia L seems to use glass made by SCHOTT, again no mention of a shatter-proof sheet.
Does this mean no more pre-installed shatter-proof sheets by Sony Mobile?

Actually SP uses Shatter proof sheet on Corning Gorilla glass. As mentioned in the link below
http://www.sonymobile.com/global-en/products/phones/xperia-sp/specifications/#tabs

Great mid-range phone.
Seems like a great mid-range phone to me. Of course everything seem better in their adds but I was honestly positively surprised when I saw it.
Having doubts though about the functionality an smoothness of the phone. I've been using Sony XPERIA S and with a 1.5 GHZ Dual-Core processor and 1 GB of RAM it was quite laggy even when using their built-in APPS like Walkman. At times it would stutter and force close even when other APPS were closed. Since Sony got rid of Ericsson I've become a huge Sony fan especially with their latest release the XPERIA Z. Their designs are formidable in my opinion and I guess many people will agree with me. The translucent bar in the S and the SP is something notable, probably a battery drainer but non the less a nice add to create something different, elegant and "sexy".
I'm very pleased to see another, newer device of Sony with this translucent bar. It'd be a nice second phone to keep with me just in case something happens with my future XPERIA Z or HTC ONE!
YES, definitely not going to buy the S4, design disappoints me and am genuinely sick of Samsung using cheap materials. Specs? Thumbs up Samsung!

Nothing is confirmed at the moment, but based on the picture the device looks very sexy. Still have to see the thickness and views from other angles.
If it comes out, will you ditch the Arc and make the upgrade?
i am waiting for its launch or announce date
by the way it can be fake or rumor too.........
the Duo has been an ongoing rumor on some asian forums since january and that it would be a flagship phone for the second half of 2011.
If I would've wanted a dual core phone in the first place, I wouldn't have bothered buying a SE Xperia Arc. I would've bought a Galaxy SII, Sensation oder Optimus Speed instead. I don't think dual core phones are necessary right now. There are no real big advantages. Single core phones work very well, especially the arc.
i put no way since i got my arc yesterday
That photo's fake as F***... the dock bar's not even at the bottom.... They won't be bringing out a Dual core this year.. it will be the 2012 model..
No
I definitely wouldn't. The Arc works like a charm for me.
No, my arc still more sexy than that thing

I'm pretty confident they'll have one out before the end of the year - maybe announced around September time.
Without knowing more about the specs, I can't comment whether I would purchase one out of my own money or not.
But I reckon I'd end up with a Duo when it was released anyway.

I remember SE saying there will be a flagship phone for the second half of 2011.. can't find the quote atm
Also, I don't think they expect Arc users to ditch their phones after using them for a couple of months... I think its more for the X10 users (and SE fanboys)
I definitely wouldn't.Arc has the best smartphone design..
That picture doesn't look like a Sony Ericsson phone! come on guys, look at X10, Arc and all the others; they look cool and sexy. The picture looks more like a Samsung phone. I'll check with SE tomorrow and come back.

I would consider
dual core will be the way for future phone. I will consider to change if the spect is significally better than my current Arc.
I'll be considering a dual-core Android phone come 2012, and not this year. Just hoping it will be coming from SE with it's 16mp cam with all it's full 1080HD video recording.

So what is the difference between the Xperia Ion and the Xperia S? Just the screen size and at&t LTE support? Will the Xperia S also be available in the U.S. through Sony Style off contract?
So Xperia™ S have frontal camera, but ion doesnt?
that makes a difference when using with apps like skype, for me at least.
Edit: Ion specs are impressive, i wonder why SE cant offer the whole package when designing a phone , i badly wanted frontal camera on a phone like this.

To be honest, I'd be surprised, upset, and confused if they don't keep a consistent UI across all their phones, so I'd expect the new UXP on ours to look more or less the same as on the Ion and S.

Of course it will be same UI
just like x10 gingerbread is same like arc gingerbread right?
You shouldn't expect the new UI to be available on 2011 phones. Sony Ericsson has to differentiate. They'll keep the Android version updated for as long as it takes, but you won't see a new UI for old phones. They did that once with the X10 (to 2.3) because the X10 really deserved another update, but I can't see it happening with their current line-up.
You have to differentiate between old and new at some level. The interface SE uses is always fitting with the physical design of their phones. Updating the interface would break the cohesion.
And, with the different resolutions, it might not be as easy as we think. They'd have to redo a lot of the graphics to make stuff from a 1280x720 display work properly on a 848x480 display.
But we'll probably see someone at XDA backport the whole ROM. Shouldn't be that hard either, their foundations are probably more or less the same.

It refers to a Sony Mobile press invite in France taking place on Thursday 4 July at 09.30
The pictures says that the invite is translated to the following: “Sony Mobile reserves a big surprise for you“. Note the ‘big’ in that sentence.
The graphic then shows the following hand written text: “Do not forget to mark your calendars!” It shows the text being written by a stylus, giving more credence to rumours that the 6.4-inch device will support an input device such as a stylus or pencil.
What we’re not sure about is that the Xperia Z Ultra is rumoured to be water resistant, yet the headphone jack is open with no port covering it.

I have read a comment in xperiablog that says maybe because the device is too thin to sport a 13MP ? It make sense to me, altought I prefer a less thiner device with a 13Mp camera, you can't name a device "Ultra" without putting in it all the best material available at the moment...
The info is all over the net, so nothing exclusive here.
edit : 3G RAM isn't credible.
can someone make a size comparison picture with note 2, ZU, Z and Zl? What was the rumor size for Honami?

If this is true, then it would be thinner than de Z. Well, I think the Z is thin enough. Thinner than the Z must feel really fragile. They'd better make it a tad thicker and put a huge battery inside.

I think Sony is going to use size for marketing, so ZU case would be thin, ZL would be small, either or Z is balance in between. Tablet Z is super thin as well.
why do you need 3gb RAM ?
Frmo the 2gb in the XZ (1.84... aviable) i mostly only use 800-1200mb.
What app does need that much memory ? If you think that RAM always needs power....
So is it a phone or a tablet? Am I missing the Frequency designations?
it's a phablet. Dheh!
A phone to replace or substitute a tablet. A mini tablet without needing a seperate phone.
I say well done sony for having the balls, and if I didn't own the xperia z I would definetley consider this.

Togari is gonna be a huge mistake I guess. But Honami might have a bright future. I have many of my friends saying that the Z is too large already and that they'd prefer an HTC ONE or yes, iPhone 5. I can't imagine myself walking around with a 6.4" screen phone and probably won't. The Honami I'm much more curious about and most likely will buy it when released.

Thanks for sharing irimas. second leak of the same design. to me it looks to be z3. the design look fine to me but i'll have an opinion after seeing the whole device in higher quality pics, not these purposely blurred once for obvious reasons. with that said, my next device if probably z4, not this one, but it's nice to see the design as this should share more or less the same design with z4.
I love the sides and bottom design :

Wait, aosp launcher? lol
I have seen different view of the leak at gsmarena. I doubt it is real because the size is pretty small.
Maybe it's the Z3C

how could the hardware probably be different from the Z2 ?
Snapdragon S805 ? and more ? 5.5" screen ? maybe in 2560x1440 ? still 3gb ram !
Wondering why one of two is always ugly...
Z was great, Z1 not, Z2 amazing, Z3 awful...
Hope Z4 will be perfect again

You have screenshots in OP where you can read it's still S800/801 - I really hope S805 will be available for Z3 - it's not good to have three-four devices with a same chipset (same/similar or old cpu but overclocked - to higher values, of course)

we should see S805 for Z4 in MWC 2015...
and they still didn't increase the camera pixels for Z3,Z1 & Z2 already 20.7MP...

To be honest, I don't see a need to upgrade higher pixel for the camera. What's more important is the optimization of the camera in my humble opinion.
Also, as long as Sony continue naming its flagship Z3,Z4 and so on, then I believe it will continue the omnibalance design of the Z. Usually Sony introduce a new product name if it comes with a new design. Then again, its just an opinion of mine.. I could be wrong.
Regarding the S801, if Sony were to use it on Z3 then Z3 would be the last flagship of the Z line. Since they will look to clear all their SoC stocks.
Personally, if Z3 is released similar to what the leaks are, then Z2 would probably the best option to stay with.
Looks the same...

is it me, or are these phones getting too damn big? the Z3 is the size of a NOTE 3! come on Sony, that's nuts. do what you want with the Ultra for a phablet, but please, keep your phones at a reasonable size. the Z2/GS5/M8 are already a bit beyond what i think is "too big" (perfect size would probably be a GS4).
why not:
1. make the bezels and top and bottom smaller -- instead of bigger!
2. increase earpiece/speaker volume from the Z2
3. put a next-gen CPU/GPU combo in it, but maintain standard HD resolution. (forget about pointlessly chasing 2K pixels on a bloody handset like dumb LG/Samsung are trying to do)
4. use Gorilla Glass 3 (or 4, if that exists by the time of release)
5. optimize the camera software/hardware so that 20MB photography isn't only manual
6. increase brightness of the screen for outdoor viewing
7. make 64GB and worldwide LTE bands standard issue
this would be perfect.

Hey Guys and Gals
Sony's latest flagship is hitting the street less than six months after its predecessor. The Xperia Z3 is also similar in hardware to the Z2, is it worth the upgrade?
Sony touting improved battery management, the addition of remote PS4 play and some tweaks to the camera software, is it enough to keep people coming back? Lets break down some of the features of the Sony Xperia Z3:
Design
The design is lighter and slimmer than the Z2, while largely similar, its more of refining the design than a whole new device. As previous versions, the Z3 features the same dust and water protection, IP65 and IP68 certification, so should be good for 30 minutes at 1.5 meters water depth. The reinforced corners and tempered glass will also help those a little accident prone.
The Z3 is available in several metallic colors black, white, copper and green.
Screen
The Z3 has basically the same screen as the Z2 a 5.2" panel with a 1,920 x 1,080 resolution. With competitors flagship's moving to QHD displays, its an odd choice. We're still unsure if if the increased resolution will make a big difference on devices with this size screen and if keeping the pixel count lower Sony has achieved its claims on battery life. If you're happy with the Z2's screen, this should suit.
Hardware
Despite the Z3 being only having marginal improvements over its predecessor, it still packs a punch. Powered along by a 2.5GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 processor as found in the Galaxy S5, and is backed up with 3GB of RAM. As with most flagship devices, it has the usual array of connectivity options including 4G, NFC, Wi-Fi and low-energy Bluetooth 4.0. The Z3 also sports stereo speakers, so audio output should be enough for those quick youtube moments.
The camera is the same seen in the Z2 with a 20.7 MP sensor, thought some software improvements have been added. A 25mm G lens for wider, clearer shots has been included and the cameras ISO rating has been upgraded. With 4K video recording also available, this is an appealing package.
Software
Here is the Z3's main party feature, PS4 remote Play! For some this may be the deal breaker, and it is appealing having fully fledged console gaming on a mobile device (for those who dont own a PSVita) Sony has made available a smart looking attachment for the PS controller, so the Z series devices can be mounted above for a full mobile gaming experience. This is a most welcomed add-on, personally i don't get on with on-screen controllers, you just cant beat the feel of real buttons Lets hope one of the community's fantastic devs can port this bad boy to other devices:good::highfive:
Sony has also introduce the lifelog service to its latest devices, this is a fitness and well-being application. Lifelog uses the Z3's sensors along with other wearable's (Smartwatch 3) to collect data on distances covered, calories burnt, workout intensity and steps taken etc. Its a nice touch for those who own other Sony devices.
Battery Life
This is where Sony claims to of upgraded the Z3, despite having a lower rated battery 3100mAh over 3200mAh, Sony have worked on the power management and now claim the Z3 will last a full 2 days over the Z2's 1.4. We have yet to see if these claims are true, so looking forward to members experiences on this.

I guess Z3 is all the Z2 should have been from the beginning.
Z3 camera have 12.800 ISO setting in camera, and also some kind of "white magic" display.

Z4 will be all Z2 should be...
Powered by S805 and 4GB ram, 64GB internal memory and Android 5.
Sony didn't bring anything new and we all knew that'll be the case...
They just want to be in our heads...that's all.
If you upgrade from Z2 to Z3 you'll get few new apps and features and that's not enough...
Of course, Sony want older users (not by age but devices) to upgrade and stay in Z family...and that's OK...even...
If I'm stuck at Xperia S or even older (P or U) I would rather buy Z2.
I'll be significantly cheaper and you'll still get awesome device.
To conclude - I think I'll wait Z4... That'll be great device...
For now...I'm enjoying my Z1 and Z2 and I love them both...
Great devices...

How will the water resistance hold up to the microSD slot? If I open and close the microSD flap cover a bunch, would it wear out and allow water in more easily?

I have a z2 tablet and the flaps are perfectly fine. I haven't notice any wear and tear on them.

Will it do this without root though? I thought with KK apps couldn't save to the SD anymore without a root mod (like on my Note 2)
