calibrate the XZ screen for vibrant color - Xperia Z General

We all know that some of the color looks washed when we watch in a diff angle , also the head on looks sometimes may not look great since BE2 is not applied all time .
not sure if this works as I dont have a rooted phone ( dont plan to root till 4.2 ) can anyone test this on their rooted phone and post results and reviews please?
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.nexus4displaycontrol&feature=search_result
this appears to work very well with the Nexus4 hope should work on the XZ too
awaiting positive results

does this work?? any conformation..

Try screen adjuster. Does not require root.

Tried it. It doesn't work. Gives an error everyone you try run it

It won't work more than likely because it is based on the Nexus 4 hardware.

If you just want to deal with the view angle problem, set the system brightness higher (80% or higher), and set the brightness of the screen adjuster to 50%~70%, nothing else. Then the view angle will be amazing, but you will also find very little blue tint when displaying white color

[DISCUSS] xperia play. bought it. 2 hours later. was back to the store :/

so yeah. title says it all. its sad how small things can f**k up an awesome phone.
that doesnt mean i wont buy it forever though. but those things are really annoying.
first :
my screen. was yellow. it has a yellowish tint . the whites looked yellow. while my iphone is totally cool blue white.
and i am very OCD about this. god knows how many galaxy S and iphones i returned because of this issue.
and the store didnt have any stock back so there was no option but return it or keep it.
second :
i knew about this issue but god i didnt know its that annoying. no option to turn off the auto brightness. its very low for me . i have to keep a light close to it to keep it on high brightness. i dont care about battery i want to enjoy my gaming sessions with a screen i can SEE ffs.
Third :
i was playing the N64 emulator. mario 64 sometimes lagged at the beginning of the stage, but once you play, its ok. F zero was running below 60fps for sure because my brother has a nexus S and it was super smooth. killer instect not playable on both phones. Xtreme G not playable on both phones.
maybe too many things were open thats why it lagged a little in my gaming tests.
i love the hardware design. and i am sure the roms will fix the auto brightness issue. all i need is a phone with no dead pixels and with a screen that doesnt look like someone pissed on it.

press the brightness button up to 3 times each time you press it the screen gets brighter until it hits 100% and then goes dark again if you press it one more time.

As mentioned this doesn't turn off auto brightness.
All it does is make your brightness 100%. If you cover up the auto brightness sensor, your screen will dim.
I don't own this phone but I do own an HTC EVO and there is an option to turn off the auto brightness. To do this you go to Settings > Display > Brightness and un-check the "Automatic Brightness" box. After that just move the slider to the highest setting and you should be good to go.

I'm positive that a function exists to turn off auto brightness on the xperia play, but at present Sony have omitted any functionality of accessing this from the end user UI.
Meaning it is not possible to turn off auto brightness unless you start rooting and customising your own ROM.
Use "notification toggle" from the market you can disable auto brightness.. But tbh its pretty well implemented..
As for yellow, I have the same issue, but I look at a galaxy s and its really blue, look at my wifes n1 its got a red tint.. The warmth of the screen colors will be adjustable once the phone is rooted

For everyone still having problems with Auto Dim on the Xperia Play, there is an app in the Android market made just for the Xperia Play!
Search: Disable Auto Brightness by hatcyl in the android market!
This app will stop the screen from Dimming / Brightening once it is being used.
Alright guys ...
I had created an application to disable the auto brightness feature of the Xperia Play. The app has now been updated ... and it's great!
1. Thanks everyone for the support!
2. The app has been updated.
New features:
a. Toggle Auto Brightness from launcher.
b. Tasker support (Kinda)
c. THE SCREEN IS NOW SUPER BRIGHT!
Thanks Everyone!
Get the app: https://market.android.com/details?id=com.hatcyl.android.Disable_Auto_Brightness
ps. This app may also work for other Sony Ericsson devices!
I having similar issue.
Got a new Xperia Neo V and the screen has a yellow tint. Googled around & found that I am not alone. Brightness etc is fine but color is not.
Now since I am still digging in I wanted to know if its a known problem?
If so is there a fix?
Hardware or software?
Thanks
Good job for bumping a dead thread!
If you have a yellow tint to your phone, you have two options. One, you can search for an app of some sort that can adjust the system colors on your phone.
Second option, you can take your phone back and complain about it, if it's been recent enough that you purchased it, you should get an exchange.

[TIP] How To Enhance Screen Quality For Xoom [Updated: 9/5]

The Instructions:
Short, sweet, and straight to the point: So, here's what you do... you will want to download the app called Screen Filter with the market link provided below. After you do that, within the Screen Filter app you will want to drag that brightness bar to say 85.1% and then hit enable. This won't lower your current screen brightness very much so no worries there. You should hopefully notice a difference for the better all around, especially viewing from an odd angle. It helps to reduce that white backlight look you get from a side view. I will typically set the in app brightness to either 85.1%, 75.5%, or 72.5%, and my actual system brightness to 50%. It works quite well without being too bright or too dark. And it goes without draining much, if any battery life. Feel free to try other brightness settings to fit your personal needs.
Try it on other Android devices as well, it works great! The best way to test it out is to use the widget. You can turn it off and on while changing your viewing angle to compare and see the difference for yourself on your homescreens. Forget about a complicated method and get yourself a better screen today with Screen Filter!
Screen Filter Can Be Found Here:
https://market.android.com/details?id=com.haxor&feature=search_result
Showing Off Side Angle View:
You will be able to notice that in the after screenshot the green bar across the top of the market app is quite a bit more vibrant and has more of a green color than the before screenshot. And you will also notice that the white back light color will be enhanced as well, giving a better appearance from the side viewing angles. A nifty little quick fix, if you will.
Before:
After:
Screen Filter Known Issues Reported By Users:
*Being completely stock and using the stock system apps seems to be causing some major lag issues (Xoom)
*Cannot seem to click install when you are manually installing an apk without disabling (Xoom)
*Cannot compose emails without disabling (Nexus S)
You can add to this list. If you find anymore issues please post them here and I will add them to my list above. After we gather most/all issues that we are having I will let the dev know what we have found and we can make some positive results for all! Maybe we can even have some new features added in a new release. Once the Honeycomb source gets released and we start getting custom ROMs, expect user interface tweaks such as what you find in Cyanogenmod. Until then, use this. It's the easiest and best tool we have for now.
Note For Screen Filter:
This method may only be effective on the 3G version of the Xoom. It appears that it may not be noticeable as much, if at all on the Wifi model.
Make That High Def Screen Even Higher:
For this you will need to be a root user, and always be sure to have a current Nandroid backup handy just in case.
You will want to download the free app called LCD Resolution (Root). You can find it on the market here. Open the app, and then you will see your current density setting as well a list of density options for you to choose from. The default density value for the Xoom is 160. I do not recommend that you go below 140, as certain screen elements may become misaligned. Just dropping the value down by 10 to 150 makes a nice noticeable difference.
Basically: The default density value for the Xoom is 160. I recommend using either 150, or 140 as your density value and nothing less. I think 150 seems to be right where most people would want their screen to be if they wanted to go just a bit higher def. It makes the resolution a little nicer without going too overboard. After you choose your density setting, don't forget to check the "Always Set on Boot" box. This makes it so much easier so that you will not have to worry about setting this up with every single time you boot. Then hit apply, reboot your Xoom, and then make sure that the settings stick. Done!
Apply one of the density settings I have listed with one of the Screen Filter settings also listed for a nice effect. It's almost as if you have a whole new tablet when you combine the two!
Currently: I am using the 140 density value on my Xoom, and I couldn't be happier!
Default Density Value 160:
Density Value 150:
Density Value 140:
If these tips have helped you out toss me a thanks. If I get more positive feedback I will be adding some more great helpful tips for us Xoomers. Thanks for stopping by!

The difference is there. Try viewing from different angles instead of straight on and compare. I added my own screenshots of my Xoom just now and you should be able to see a nice difference from the before and after. This method really helps the side viewing angles a lot by reducing the white backlight that causes the screen to distort when not looking directly down on it. But it looks really great all around, not just from the side.
so what do i put the system brightness at? and what do I put the screen filter percentage at?

You can customize and set it to whatever you like. Me, for normal usage I like to use 50% for the system brightness and 85.1% for the Screen Filter brightness. I think it works quite well this way without being too dark or too bright. I use this setting on both my Xoom and my OG Droid.

Hmm.. interesting. I use it all the time without any kind of problem. What launcher and browser are you using? And are you stock or rooted?
I'm using both Adw Launcher and Launcher Pro depending on my mood and they both work great with Screen Filter enabled.. no lag of any kind. And my browser of choice is always Dolphin HD and it also works without any lag. I'm on a rooted 3.1 Xoom with the latest tiamat kernel. Maybe I can help solve the problem?
i am curious why one would jack their screen brightness up to 85% in the first place, 33% gets a perfectly view able screen indoors. Not to mention the savings wrt battery life.

Yep, nice for off angles but for sure adds all types of lag. Bonse stock 3.1 no root. Factory launcher... isn't their a color control like what's available for the Nexus S? You would think with the screen wash out complaints someone would have come up with an answer by now.
Just tested another app. Really liked the effect on off angles so I'm searching the market for other stuff. There is another app called back light filter. It alowsyou to adjust the Alpha levels along with individual colors. Have to tinker to find the best fit but no home screen lag.

I've tested this app before and it's so so. Most users will want something easy to use without much tinkering or setup. It works pretty well through, but it could use some more features, it lacks a widget, and there is no notification bar icon for fast access. Good comment though. Maybe the people who are completly stock everything should give this a go since they are reporting lag issues.

I agree with you on the simplicity of the app in the original post. If the developer can dial out the lag it is definately the best tool for screen filtering on the xoom. I just wish the OEMs would provide simple calibration tools for screens.

XPERIA Z Screen Differences.

Hey all,
Just wanted to get a quick opinion from everyone here about the Sony Xperia Z screen.
There has obviously been a large discussion on the internet about the different quality Xperia screens and today I managed to identify first hand what an arguably good Z screen locks like in comparison to a bad one ,at least for my tastes. One device has a horrid reflection effect in a dark environment which left me wanting while another unit has better contrast all round with higher saturation.
What is everyone's experience and likes dislikes with the Xperia Z screen? I remember the apple screens when you use to go to the apple store and notice your screen has a yellowish tint in comparison to the same model on display which ticked me right of.
I want to close this display discussion once and for all so we know what the deal is. Are there really bad screens and good screens and what are the differences? I think there are and I stated my opinion above.

I just mentioned that you should switch brightness to 50% so you can level the comparison field without your phone actually changing the brightness and changing results. Bravia engine should probably stay off if you don't like it, personal preference really. as for the auto brightness I recommend keeping it on, it is the first ever device that I have left this feature on since it does such a good job with it! will probably save some battery as well most times.
So does this mean the video looked alright?

The bravia engine, tbh I can't see any difference with photos, only with videos things seem so dark that you can't watch anything properly. So I guess I'll only turn it off when I am watching videos. They should have an option to let you have it on for photos & off for videos
But yes switching bravia off worked the videos perfectly thank you

It's because of the viewing angles, if you look at the beginning the European version actually looks more vibrant. The thing is that a slight tilt already makes a small difference the phones are recorded from different angles relative to the camera. Since you don't see any difference when viewing the screen head on and the difference in view angles are really minor I think it is just the positioning of the phones relative to the camera. Also because in the first part the European looks slightly better. If you look at the screen bottom up it tens to be slightly more blue with gives it slightly more vibrancy if you look top down it gives a bit more yellow causing white to be slightly yellow and thus has a tiny effect on contrast

Gpad screen gamma is too low

Some of you may have noticed it's difficult to watch dark scenes in movies on the gpad. I think the problem is the gamma calibration, you can see it clearly on the pictures I took.
https://imageshack.com/i/nf96iaj
On the top you can see my nexus 7 2013, you can differentiate all the shades of grey from 1% white to 100%.
On the gpad, everything is solid black from 1% to 12% of white.
You can find the original image here : http://imageshack.us/f/594/6291.png/
How low can you go, on your gpad, before the grey melts with the black ?
Do you know an app to apply gamma correction ?
Here you can see the same picture on the N7 and the gpad. You can't even distinguish the guy's ear on the g pad.

Some of you may have noticed it's difficult to watch dark scenes in movies on the gpad. I think the problem is the gamma calibration, you can see it clearly on the pictures I took.

On the top you can see my nexus 7 2013, you can differentiate all the shades of grey from 1% white to 100%.
On the gpad, everything is solid black from 1% to 12% of white.

I see the difference, and I knew it was there already also.. I'm sorry, but apparently gamma is not something that is doable. - I was looking to link you the app from market called "Screen Adjuster", however you want to look at this description, especially the last sentence. ;/
- dimming the screen 15-100% (below minimum system brightness)
- screen color and a contrast adjustment
- system brightness 0-100% adjustment
- functional widget (on/off, system brightness, settings)
- autorun option
Some phones have a color tint screen. This app have a possibility to try to improve colors on this kind of the screen by setting an additional factor RGB.*
The range of the dimmer is from 15% to 100% (it allows to dim the screen below a min system brightness value). Make a relief for your eyes during a nightly reading.
Furthermore, you can change fast the system brightness too.
The additional contrast factor can try to make the reading or a picture viewing more comfortable on some screens.*
The widget provides fast on/off service with a shortcuts to the Adjuster settings and the system brightness settings.
The application has the autorun option which works with the dimmer set above 22% (for the safety).
Note
A gamma adjustment is not possible to do.
You can of course try and download the app anyways and see if contrast or brightness will do anything for ya.
- In case you do download the app, remember that setting contrast low will result in problems with installing apps, as in you cannot hit Install, only cancel. To avoid this, open up Screen Adjuster and turn it off, install the app and turn it back on afterwards. It's something about lowering the settings to lower than what is "intended", I don't quite understand it and I find it rather odd. But it let's you install apps.. So I guess hooray.
That's all I got.

Thank you for your response, but I'm already using screen adjuster. I set the contrast at -25 and it helps a lot to see dark details.
Unfortunately, it has two side effects :
- it brightens the dark shades of grey, but also the black levels.
- I noticed that the contrast setting also affects the white making it look like light grey.
So the contrast setting in screen adjuster doesn't affects only the dark tones like it would on a monitor or a tv, it affects the contrast ratio.
I've found apps to make gamma adustment but it only works on some devices with custom kernel.

Yea, I was about to say that gamma can be done but only on custom kernels. Lot of Nexus 5 stuff on the market. Apparently it's Google who locked the gamma settings completely down but only in 4.4.2. I guess it may work on stock LG Kernel since it's only 4.2.2? I'm afraid we'll have to wait for some kernel support for other roms. That would be awesome. I really hope for some Franco-kernel-glory on this device.
That's what I thought, we need to wait for custom kernels...I hope it will come soon, because it's so frustrating to have such a good screen with bad calibration !
People tends to complain too much about the warm white balance but the gamma calibration is far more concerning.

I hope @dalingrin can cook something up to address both. He said he was going to work on something.

Yes it would be great if he did , though he's done so much for us already.

Hi there Young Bobbie, I am new to posting on XDA so I couldn't post this in your kernel developer page. This is my first post on any forum page ever. First off, thank you very much for your hard work to make this kernel happen to correct gamma on the v500. I have been sitting on the fence whether to get the gpad, and if i would get the v500 or the v510. Was leaning toward the v510 because of Sleekmason's wonderful kernel work, but it's exciting that we have now have the same options available for the v500. I noticed this was working fully with the Malladus ROM. My question to you was whether or not this worked with stock LG ROM as well? Thank you again YoungBobbie and Sleekmason for your time and creations.
Sorry, just answered my own question. Guess it helps to read the very first line of the page (making fun of myself now ;-P) Thank you again YoungBobbie and sleekmason!!!

Lol be interesting to see when I update. It is possible they could have tweaked it a little though
Hmm, looks exactly the same to me.
On what color profile are you on?
I think my colors are a bit more punchy and saturated now as well, just done update.
Will check if my GF will see any difference as hers phone is updating now...
When I powered up my brain said, display seems different, but after usage I can't tell anymore.

I think you are right. I've just checked the Electric Sheep wallpaper - it stopped looking like old, worn out, colourless rug.
Colours are the same, no mention of any colour improvements in the changelog anyways.

That's possible, there were about 59 bug fixes from what I read.....One thing for sure that was fixed is the FPS....much better :good:
I can guarantee i can see no improvement whatsoever i am using saturated mode from day 1

I notice zero difference in my case.
Nope screen is still mediocre
I noticed that black crush was slightly better after the March update. Watching the HDR sheep video the dark parts weren't completely black. Also, that black box test I compared what boxes I was able to see compared to others and I was able to see the darker boxes

Because before the update the FPS was super laggy, after the update it seems much improved and responsive
I'm on natural color scheme and what I noticed was the black background I use for wallpaper seems, well, blacker. It might not be a color improvement but rather a contrast one...
I agree. I noticed sharper images too
I feel like things look better too.. unfortunately my battery life is awful
