[Q] Confusion! PA/PACman/Rootbox/Revolt Differences - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I just flash all of these roms today to verify, and I'm sure everyone has noticed but why does PA/PACman missing sooooo many options than Rootbox/Revolt?
-Alternate toggles setup which is missing the "favorite user" option and is not user friendly
-Lacking customization for pie options
-No option for Navbar/status bar transparency
Its really confusing because RootBox and Revolt roms have all the options that every rom on this thread have accept one thing.....PA. Which means there is no options to use hybrid options/colorPAoptions/PAdpi Settings, etc.
Its really confusing why there are two very distinct bases that Devs are using for roms,is there a reason why these differences can't be combined? Does anyone know if there will every be a rom that runs that same base as Rootbox/Revolt but have PA?
Yes, I usually avoid these types of post, but gosh does this not bother anyone else?

well theres toggle customization, thanks to cm,
theres customization for pie,
and theres options for bar colors including alpha that naturally go beyond anything else because of hybrid
but still - we're trying to keep things simple and minimal. thats our direction. if rootbox or revolt wants to go another way thats their choice.
i just personally do not enjoy roms that are heavy with options, i dont think thats a good thing and it conflicts with android which is still whats making 99% of the whole.
as for pie, i want something thats quick and easy to navigate. i dont want quick access everywhere i lay my finger on you know? like ... you switch on phone, theres shortcut options, shortcuts in your navbar, shortcuts on your google now circle, shortcuts in your notificationpanel, shortcuts in your togglepanel, shortcuts clenched on poor pie-in the worst case via multirow, shortcuts here shortcuts there. who'd like such a frankenstein of a rom? i sure dont. and if theres roms that truly cater to those needs - well more power to them and by all means, go that route.
most people on xda, and i am very happy about that, still value coherency. and they'd rather see new features getting made piece by piece. its the same with music. i like albums and bands. but there's some people that prefer ready-made collections and top10-samplers or whatever. i dont judge that, its a simple matter of preference.

Thank you for the valuable response. I was kind of expecting a lot of bashing from normal users. So I guess I have to how they combine these features.

Haven't tried Revolt, but I like the Pacman rom and Rootbox is good too

Acer Ring, love it or hate it?

Before trying out some ICS ROMs, my only experience with the acer ring was from using the Iconia Touchbook. When i first heard acer was bringing the ring to android i was pretty excited, and i thought it would add some great functionality.
however, after i flashed a ROM containing it, i became annoyed with it very quickly. while i enjoyed having a way to access volume onscreen, the whole thing was just too obtrusive. it was easier just to use the hardware buttons. the only other thing i could think of to use the ring for was as a way to launch overskreen or aircalc from anywhere, but, lets face it, hitting home, opening an app on your center homescreen, and returning to what you were doing isn't that big of a deal.
also, the acer ring comes bundles with the acer lockscreen, and i really don't enjoy that. i actually greatly prefer the honeycomb lockscreen to the stock ICS one, i think the camera-launch from the homescreen is kinda pointless on a tablet, but i can live with it. the acer lockscreen, however, is gaudy, and i don't WANT to have to choose 4 apps to put on my lockscreen.
So, now that i got my personal feelings out of the way, I would like to year what you guys think.
Is the Acer Ring cool or annoying? do you like the lockscreen that comes with it? if so why? and have you actually tried it, or are these just your initial impressions?
Ehhh... eye candy. Also, considering the drop in performance vs returns..
Ok, so you can hit a bookmark from the lockscreen. Tab unlocks. Browser opens.
Nice feature. Sort of defeats the purpose of having a lockscreen don't you think?
What's nice, is that it is so darn easy to modify in the apk! As far as colors and such. Much easier than mucking around in the systemUI. Makes for a nice lock ring.
Just saying....
I like it and it has no impact on performance. I compaired with ring and without ring.
You can easely dissable it in settings.
If you don't want any feature of the ring and lock screen ring just two words need to be changed in build.prop
Enabled to disabled.
Acer shell mode and Acer shell contact mode.
That simple.
If you want you can discuss every app on a rom.
So for me yes , ones you are used to it its very easy.
Its not only for your bookmarks but if you put in the ring your favorite apps you get really fast access to them.
Everybody wants a folder orginazer but this ring combined with apinap you are set.
And yes it looks cool.
I use it every time now.
I have absolutely no use for it, but then again, I see no reason to hate it either. I mean, you can just ignore it if you don't like it.
it was one of my favorite features of the a200 3.2.1 port, but after running that for a while i simply dont care about it. its inclusion in a rom isnt a deal breaker for me either way, as it doesnt effect performance and it doesnt hurt anything being there.
the ring
I disabled it, but I like the lock screen. I've been using ics on my a500 for a few days and have the apps I would open anyway on the lock screen ring.
Wizz bar does what the ring does, and is MUCH better. I hate skins, all they do is disable and cause incompatibility. Case in point: acer's ring and Samsung's similar thing cause problems for Wizz bar.
I just picked up the A500 today. I played with the A200 a bit and the lock screen kinda reminds me of the AOKP roms a bit with the lockscreen. It's gonna be interesting to see what all we can do with it theme wise. It seems to add way more compared to the AOSP builds I've been theming on me nexus.
I like the lock screen ring for the purpose of being able to go straight to the apps I use the most. Also, it is nice to be able to change volume from inside ICS. I just have a small preference to using the UI for volume. If I were to have a complaint, it would be that the Ring can only access 'local' bookmarks and not those from my Google account that I have synced.

Why not just change them to local ones you setup the ring bookmarks.
I like it, but then again I love Sense on the HTC devices. Plain old Android gets boring after a while.

Exactly the same for me
I like it but wish I could do more with it. its cool eye candy to show off with but most of the time I don't use it.
I love it. eye candy and functional. Doesn't take away too much from the experience. I do wish there was a finger gesture to bring it up though, instead of the button at the bottom. Perhaps there's an app out there that can run in the background and bring the ring up when a 5-finger gesture is used?

I do have some, but I would prefer to have all my bookmarks synced between machines. Sites I visit more I have added to local, but it would be nice if I didn't have to. In retrospect, I think I have an understanding as to why they don't. It isn't a deal breaker, just my opinion.
It's a bit of fun, but not that useful...
...Mainly because I use Dolphin as my browser. If there was a way to make my bookmarks from Dolphin available to the Ring, I might still use it. But as it is? Turned it off...
Currently using Flexreaper with Go launcher Beta for ICS and loving it...

I just updated my A501 to ICS and looking for a way to configure the normal Acer lock ring. Is there a way to add some items to the lock and the camera?
I use the lock ring functionality every day. Very convenient to jump straight to email (or whatever your top apps are) when unlocking the tab. I don't use the ring much once in UI after unlock but I like the functionality. Yes, it's nice eye candy also.
I love it because my main apps that I use are on there so its very easy to get to the apps I need. I don't install a from if it doesn't have the ring but I can see why some people wouldn't like it.
I like it but I hate how it doesn't show gmail linked bookmarks, only local. Is there a way to have the bookmarks on both local and my account so that I can use the links on my other devices while having them show in the ring?

PA? Whats the hype?

Ok so I prefer AOKP, sometimes CM if an official final release ever comes out. I've been sniffing about at the Paranoid Android ROM some. I'd like some feedback on what the special deal is that brings everyone over to it.
I'm aware of the ability to change the DPI and color of each individual apps which sounds nice if you are into that - but what other things draw people to it besides that? If it's just that it has AOKP and CM features along with the dpi/app color stuff then I'd just prefer to stick with AOKP. Is there anything else?
How's the battery life with the included kernel? Are other kernels better to go with?
The kernels pretty much a stock Google kernel ... I prefer to use other kernels like trinity and faux but the ROM is nice .
Although I'm a big fan of Steve's aokp

if you like aokp and are thinking of switching roms try codefirex if you havent. it has some form of all aokp features but its super optimized with the latest linaro and google optimizations and you can tell the difference over aokp/cm. im not a fan of PA because i think its just too customizable and is overwhelming because i would be so worried about getting everything "just right." i like most of the stock feel and a good amount of customization but to pick a color and density and ui mode for every app is just too much for me. the rom ends up feeling clunky and just wrong, but many people like it, but it sounds like its not your thing either
Where is the thread for codefirex? .. Does it have the bionic optimisations ?

Yeah thanks, I was thinking that same thing for the most part. I don't want to nit pick around and screw with DPI settings, my eyes are bad enough I don't need things smaller and the stock colors work fine for me.

Here's another good explanation: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=37767038&postcount=1825
I am a tinker. So thats what PA gives me.
I change shyte all day, everyday. Then I add Franco Kernel. I get to tinker with that also.
if all you want is vanilla, stay with what ya got. If you want Everything your way. Then BK this mofo and install PA.
Its only daunting at first. Once you understand where the settings are you are all good.
Truthfully, if you are installing a Custom rom, I can't personally understand why you would install any else.

we get this a lot. but its wrong. many people have mixed it up with "tablet mode" before and build.prop system dpi nonsense. none of this stuff applies. theres nothing getting smaller unless you want it small, seperate from the UI you choose ofc. in fact pa is sometimes used by the elderly with bad eye sight, since you can make apps big as well. not that this is pa's premise, but just for reference.
usually people who havent tried hybrid engine have no clue what it is - for me personally its androids most important modification, because i know what it can do. i doubt theres anything in the rom scene that comes close to it in complexity and practicability. and the latter point is important. its not a toy. it makes a phone better in so many productive ways, far beyond anything you can achieve through typical customization.
its one of many unique features btw,

One of the best things pa did was ditch cm as their base.
Its refreshing to see the nexus ROM scene as a whole seems to pulling away from all the cm10 and aokp based / kanged Roms.
Nothing wrong with those roms if that's your thing. Others like close to aosp with some tweaks. Not let's toss in every single thing we can think off.

I have tried PA a few times but each time I've been surprised by the LACK of of customization features. I can easily find the hybrid engine settings and edit the hell out of them but I don't find it useful at all. I'm not sure if I've just missed or if they really just don't exist.
Here's a list of some great small AOKP features that I couldn't find in PA. I would be happy if someone more familiar with PA could confirm if they exist or not.
- Clock position (center/right/dont show)
- Clock color
- Navbar & Statusbar opacity
- Kill-all button on recents menu
- Option to hide the hints of left and right widgets when opening lockscreen
- Volume music controls (long press to next/prev)
- Allow all widgets in lockscreen
- Navbar longpress actions
- LED notification customization (has to be in ROM, not a buggy 3rd party app)
- Less frequent notification sounds
I can live without one or two of these functions but since I couldn't find any of them in PA I just had to uninstall it after a few minutes.

anyway. most of this stuff, thats toys. how often did i screw around with silly quick options today? 2 seconds maybe. i switched on bluetooth. meanwhile i've actually used my phone, written mails in the best email client possible. i've talked to people via the best gtalk client possible. i've set settings in the best settings app possible. an entire market with thousands of apps is simply not accessible to you: https://play.google.com/store/apps/collection/tablet_featured you're locked out.
the fact is, youre using apps that were made to run on pocket watches. the sdk is years old and does not reflect contemporary technology anymore. your nexus4 was simply left behind. it falls back to 360p, which was used on the tiny htc wildfire xx years ago. keep in mind, 360p is WAY too small for your n4, but since the sdk is so old the next margin is 600p, you reach it almost but not quite, so back to 360. and with that you sift through unbelievable clumsy, unintuitive non-optimized apps. not to mention things like PIE, per app color, per app expanded dektop, the only rom on android that has a flawless tabletUI and a flawless phabletUI - and who knows what. i dont count anymore.
Thanks molesarecoming, I really need to give it another try. Clearly I just couldn't find the proper place for the settings.

I didn't realize I could use tablet apps. Out of curiosity what is the best email and gtalk client you are referring to, in your opinion?
Thanks for everyone's input on my original question..
the same gmail and the same gtalk thats installed on your phone. the problem is, yours looks like this: http://www.abload.de/img/2013-01-04-15.02g2z5f.jpg
mine looks like this: http://www.abload.de/img/n4-product-heroe5z5zbaj5a.jpg
that means i can actually see who writes me and switch back and forth. im not locked into one puny view.

as you see, your apps are crippled beyond repair. thats how they look on my pocket watch.
that gtalk screenshot shows tablet mode all around but again, its separate, it doesnt matter, can be anything you want. same as for stuff being small, one tap and its bigger (last screenshot shows you the controls, slider controls size, dropdownbox lets you pick the UI). my gmail for instance displays in the exact same fontsize as in phoneUI. since nex4 is technically close to a tablet it can pull it off beautifully.
same holds true for tablet apps. most of these wouldnt even run on your phone, but do on mine. apps, thats what you are actually using and interacting with, 99% of the time you use your phone. here's where i see potential for customization. the last 1% where i wanna quicktoggle bluetooth is important, too - but thats fairly standard. every rom has it.
I can't justify using PA myself to be fair.
While my girlfriend though PIE was cool, I find it slow and a poor alternative to the notification bar outside of looking cool, so found myself not using it except to show off. When I actually wanted to do stuff with my phone, the on screen buttons were much faster coupled with the notification bar.
All the DPI stuff I tried, then set back to default. The colours everyone is raving about, I absolutely hate, and I simply cannot live without holding the home button to turn off the screen lol. I don't know why but using the power button or a quick toggle on the notification bar is just so 1980.
Aside from those things, and in all fairness, there is nothing really wrong with PA I just always go back to AOKP as it really does seem more customisable than PA when you take away useless DPI editing which adds nothing to the experience of using a phone.

[Q] [Q/Advice] Looking for a ROM with certain features.

Hey guys. I've used a couple of ROMs and still cannot find one with 4 specific things that I look for in a modified version of 4.2.2/4.3 Android.
1. Brightness Slider on Notification Drawer Pulldown
2. Screen off music track change with Volume Buttons
3. Toggle Widget on Notification Drawer.
4. Dark/Black theme toggle switch in Settings.
If anyone can provide some assistance, I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks!

Look, I get it, and I'm not trying to be rude, but if I could magically search for all these features in a ROM, I would. I've used over ten ROMs and no luck. It wastes my time. Why is it a bad thing to rely on the experiences of others? That's what we do every time we do a Google search. We explore threads with people asking questions. Not to mention, this question could also help someone else looking for these things.

As above person posted, this thread will eventually get closed due to the fact that every person had their own wants and needs. So its a matter of trying and if you cant find any then idk really. But 1,2, and 3 can be found in dubbsy's rom and you can used xpose mods to do such thing and I havent had any problems with it. And your fourth request can be done yourself. Just got to know how to theme and change pngs and such.

[Q] Recommend a 4.4 ROM with stock LG features? (e.g. knock on, etc)

Hi there,
Seeking some advice on a ROM. Hate the look of stock LG G2, just installed stock-like kitkat on my old GNex and saw the google experience launcher with transparent everything, DO WANT. However I'm afraid of losing some features of stock LG software. Maybe you guys can recommend some ROMs, or if it's best to stay stock to get all the features I want, recommend some mods that will give me all the ROM features I want?
Things I NEED
Knock On/ Knock Off (LG feature)
4.4 Stock "Look and Feel" (fonts, transparent bars all around, appearance of time and battery and notifications bar, black instead of white setting menu, etc, you get the picture)
Always listening on the home screen, possibly the lock-screen, pretty much anywhere I can have it all over the UI (as per 4.4, not LG)
Recent Apps button instead of a menu button (as per 4.4, not LG)
Open apps from the lockscreen with apps icons already visible when looking at lockscreen (not the style where you hold finger over lock icon to see a choice of apps in a circle, and then have to swipe a specific direction. I used to have that and didnt like it as much as I like LG stock way of actually showing icons without you touching anything, and you swipe the icons, not a lock towards the icons)
Circle battery type thing on status bar that shows percentage
Things I haven't tried/am not sure about but might want from stock LG software, and might not want to lose flashing to custom ROM
Better stock camera?
SmartShare from the gallery app? (says it uses wifi/bluetooth to stream content to other devices)
Beam/DNLA/I don't even remember what it's called or what app I found it in?
Quickremote
You tell me please? I'm sure there's a bunch of stuff I've yet to discover that I might want (are any of LG's apps e.g. notebook useful?)
Things that are cool but not really necessary
Themes and a ton of extra features -- used to use AOKP and they had a decent amount of extra feature, not too few like CM, not too many like other ROMs where my head just starts spinning from all the features
Other
I'd really prefer not to have to wipe all the time, CM's OTA update feature was awesssooome when I had CM on my GNex, but CM is a little feature-lite for me, I mean it was good though, that's just a minor complaint. But if there's something better fitting my criteria above I'll put up with having to wipe to flash updates of the same ROM in the future if its necessary. I just never understood why OEMs can push OTAs to people and never make them wipe, but for custom ROMs (updating new versions of same ROM) I have to re-set-up everything every time
A lot of this stuff has been addressed already. Most ROMs have knock on built in, but not knock off. The work around is downloading an app that turns the screen off, and using a gesture control in another app (such as Nova Launcher) to double tap the home screen to turn the screen off. Though personally, I just have screen off set to my nav ring so I can access it from any page I'm on.
There's a flashable install here on the forums some where for Quick Remote. Works fine on AOSP ROMs.
As for 4.4 stuff, I have no idea.

How did you do that? I nowhere find a setting to change anything in the navigation ring.

HTC Confirmed - Cannot change/remove lock screen icons

cliff notes: you cant change the lock screen icons or remove them at all.
so it seems the biggest gripe i have with this phone, albeit, not a huge gripe.....
you cannot pick and choose which icons show up on your lock screen tray. it reflects what you have in your unlocked home screen tray.
so if you dont want any icons in your lock screen, then you have to remove them from your homescreen tray.
i have seen many videos of other HTC phones that you can personalize the lock screen, however, on the 816 you do not even have that subfolder for lock screen personalization.
i cannot even remember the last time that i wasnt able to customize the lock screen with whatever icons i wanted to show up or none at all (which is my preference). I guess LG is a little more flexible about this one than HTC.
it has been confirmed per HTC online chat.
do keep in mind, i have no plans on rooting or running a customer rom, nor do i want to hear anyone saying i should, because you're wasting your time.
this isnt something i should have to hack my phone for or to install a launcher or separate lock screen app to do this.
this phone is limited in storage and i shouldnt have to load it up with this crap.
Thread cleaned. People argue over the stupidest stuff on the internet. Everybody take a breather and let it go.
Customization on stock HTC ROMs has gone backwards for years. I've been an HTC user for almost four years and remember when lockscreen shortcuts could be changed, but they've been unchangable separately from the tray since Sense 4. So, it's not just this phone. And I agree it is a step backwards although I think removing skins was a step backwards in customizing HTC phones too. But, I guess that's their choice.
I tried to find a way to remove them, but the only option would be to remove them from the launcher and then use a different launcher which you don't want to do.
If you had wanted to add an app without running a custom launcher or lockscreen, you could enable widgets on the lockscreen. On my HTC One, you go to Settings, Security, Enable lock screen widgets (I'm sure yours is similar). You could then add a widget to whatever app you want (assuming one is available).
Thanks for cleaning up the thread, it certainly needed it. Also thanks for actually giving an adult type response. These responses is what you should look for in a forum not the ones that were deleted from this thread.
the HTC phones I had were before sense 4, I've been on an lg phone kick lately and they've been great. But I came across the 816 phablet and it seems exactly like what I wanted. This issue is a very small one and won't cause me much frustration other than the fact that I don't want them there. But I do use them because they are there, but my preference is that they were not.
OK, this isn't really for OP because he doesn't want to root but for anyone else that wants to use different apps on the lock screen...
Install the Xtended Settings module for Xposed. That will allow you to accomplish what OP wanted. Xtended Settings along with Sense6 Toolbox will allow you to change EVERY DAMNED THING on your Desire 816. And by everything I honestly mean it. I don't think I've found a color or setting that couldn't be changed.
Make sure you have a backup before you play around with things though because there is a lot and if you just play with it and test different things you might forget how to set it back.

Nice find. I've heard of Sense 6 Toolbox but not Xtended settings. It's unfortunate that rooting is the only way to change things.
will it let me get rid of the battery saver mode notification icon?
