NEXUS 4 stuck during booting X screen? now what? (unrooted+stock) - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So today i discovered that my month old Nexus 4 did not want to boot again.
Last night the phone was off, so i assumed the battery was dead, after putting it in the charger and asking it to boot i went to sleep.
when i woke up i was still looking at the multicoloured pulsating X.
since then it keeps getting stuck at the X screen, powering it down will make the phone power up again for no reason.
The phone was running a OTA version of 4.2.2
When powering it on with ON & vol - I get the boot menu, though navigating to the recovery mode resulted in a "No command." line with a red triangle on a android.
Currently i have no experience with either rooting/flashing, neither am i aware if this is the only option to fix this semi bricked phone.
How would i best go about fixing this issue?
Thanks.

Try to get in bootloader mode then go to recovery and wipe cache /do a data factory reset and reboot.

Okay. Get back into recovery by holding Vol-/pow.
Then scroll to recovery.
When in recovery reveal the menu by pressing vol+/pow
Once there wipe data and reset cache.

Tried that at the recovery screen but nothing responded.
also tried vol+- and +- and vol- no response from any combinations.

ah i got it to appear, it turns out that pressing the power button first instead of the volume button was an issue...
also if i do the wipedata+reset will i lose all 16 gb's of onboard storage?
and would there be a way to write/backup that data before doing so?

Here is googles support page for reset: http://support.google.com/nexus/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=2936226
follow these steps:
If your phone is on, power it off.
Press and hold Volume Down, and then press Power until the device turns on (while still pressing Power). You will see the word Start with an arrow drawn around it.
Press Volume Down twice to designate Recovery mode.
Press Power to restart into Recovery mode. You will see an image of an Android robot with a red exclamation mark.
While holding down Power, press Volume Up.
Use the volume keys to scroll to "wipe data/factory reset" and press Power to select it.
Scroll down to "Yes - erase all user data" and press Power to select it.
Note: If at any point during the above steps your phone becomes unresponsive, you can restart it by holding down the power button for several seconds.

hepatiit i got that to work, though what i am wondering is, will this erase all 16GB's of onboard data?

Yes.

Would there be a way to backup all data over USB, from the recovery menu?
I have my photos and agenda automatically backed up, but im not sure about my contacts or installed apps.

Contacts are backed up to the google servers. (can check them through GMail). Apps are also backed up to play.google.com... Note, sometimes the data isn't backed up though. Just what you've installed.
I believe a factory reset will NOT erase SDCard though. I could be wrong.
I'd say your out of luck on getting the data off. You can through recovery and ADB I think. I tried searching for the commands but I couldn't find them.

ahw shucks, the Nexus doesnt have any extended storage, it just has 16GB onboard storage, though im not sure if that is somehow a seperate entity or joined in, i looked into ADB but it requires you to have usb debugging set in advance from android.
aaaaaand now i get to also replay all the games since those savegames are gone too.... good times...

And then my phone got bricked....
after it completed the wipe i inserted the SIM card (it was in another phone)
after that the phone turned off, but now it wont respond to the power button....
now what.....

After applying some USB (charger) power and holding the on switch for a long time it finally woke up.
Now i have a blanco phone again.
Thanks for the support anyways

I had the same exact issue with my Nexus 4. When I flashed the stock image it got stuck on the X. I flashed a custom recovery and erased chase and data and it worked just fine.
I'm not sure why this is "necessary" step now when I didn't have to do do this with my Gnex but oh well.

That ain't no brick. You're in the recovery console. You have to hit a buton combination to get out of it.
Press one of the volume keys together with the power on button (red phone). I think it was those. Could be another combo though.

Hi, the easiest option is to remove the battery n replace it, then turn the phone on. The other option is to keep pressing the buttons home and call end, together.

Is there a hard reset or turning Tattoo in DFU mode (something like that) for flashing?

Sorry for the late response, you can go to the boot screen by pressing the home button and end button together... This method will only work if the phone is rooted. Else, create a Gold card and get into the fast boot mode by pressing vol down and end button simultaneously lemme know if it worked.

Madaleno, looking at the attachment it shows that your phone is not rooted, which means that you cant apply update via SD card.. it will give u an error message. Create a gold card by grabbing a smart phone from someone, it can be windows mobile or android based.... Once a gold card is created, you can flash a stock ROM. To navigate on the menu, based on ur attachment, use volume up and down keys and call button to select.
If it is not rooted maybe you still have warranty for the phone so you can send it to free service.
Well... no warranty...
And volume up/down does nothing...

You don't need your tattoo to make a gold card.
Ask someone with a Android device, and put you sd card and do it.

I've used a symbian to read CID and created a goldcard
Can someone give me some guidelines what to do next?
With your phone turned off, press power + volume down buttons at the same time.
Then wait a litle and press back until appears "FASTBOOT" in the screen.
Then connect the usb cable and flash the stock ROM.

- You need Odin program before starting.
1. Remove the battery, external SD card and SIM card.
2. Wait 10 seconds.
3. Open odin3
4. Insert battery.
5. Connect usb cable.
6. HOLD VOL+ and VOL- while plugging in USB

Jtag is usefull for empty or totally corrupted ROM recovery.
But if you see this, your phone is FAR from brick !
Just press the keys, bring it back to download mode
Then plug to cable and flash a working firmware again.
No special tools is needed,
No need to waste time and money send for repair,
Don't waste your good phone and don't break it for jtag.

Are you seeing the Phone-!-PC symbol? I was in a situation where my phone wouldn't accept the the up/down key press to enter download mode. I ended up having to make a jig which basically will force the phone into download mode. You can search the forums on how to make one.

This is what most people always do to enter dl mode.
However, many phones shipped without the button combos needed for it to work. In that case it is possible to make a USB jig to trigger download mode manually. see this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=819551

I had the exact same "phone - ! - PC" brick screen and vol up + vol down + power only took me to "unknown upload mode". I eventually figured out by myself that holding ONLY vol down + power for 10 sec is what takes you to download mode from that particular screen.
Summary: Anyone who's getting "Phone--!--PC" and the three-button combo takes you to "unknown upload mode", try holding vol down + power for 10 seconds.

[Q] My phone bricked itself and cannot enter recovery mode?

Hi guys. I was using my device and had to turn it off because my spotify app glitched. I go to turn it back on and it gets stuck on the dual core start up screen. I call Verizon and they told me to go into recovery mode. I follow all instructions and my phone fails to enter into recov mode. It will allow me to select it but it goes to the dual core screen once again afterwords. Basically my phone is a brick right now and i am in a hole because i have photos and info on here i want to retrieve as well as i dont want to buy another 400 dollar phone. if anyone has any suggestions on how i can fix this it would really really be appreciated. I do know that my phone was stock on ICS. thanks for any suggestions.

If you weren't rooted go to vzw and have them fix or replace it. Sounds like a software or hardware failure, should be covered under the warranty.

Ok I was able to reload the stock ICS using the RDSlite via the fastboot menu.
Sems a bit slow to reboot and load.
performed a full wipe after the reboot into ICS and then let it down load and install the OTA JB.
Recovery take a while to load. but performed another full wipe with JB and will test over the weekend.
Followed the same process withteh wife's M.
And it's seems much faster and more response to rebooting and accessing the recovery.
But is was 4AM. so again will test over the weekend.
Thanks

I read your post and almost the exact thing happend to my phone. Im trying RSD lite to re flash. Where did you get a valid fresh virgin copy of ICS
http://sbf.droid-developers.org/scorpion_mini_xt907/list.php
That is the full XML.zip firmware file for the stock ICS release for XT907.
You need RSD Lite 6.1.4 for everything to work properly.

[Q] My Defy is bricked, can't seem to get phone to show ClockWorkMod

Hi Everyone,
I seem to have "bricked' my Defy!
My intention was to put CM10 Android 4.1.2 for the Defy ROM on, and everything seemed to work during the installation, however now the phone won't boot past the "Motorola Symbol", or the "little Android Man with the triangle and exclamation mark (floating above him!)" - depending on whether or not I try to enter the boot menu.
These are the steps that I followed -
1). Rooted with SuperOneClick
2). Installed bootmenu & the ClockWorkMod recovery (using the second half of this page for instructions)
3). Flashed froyo (kernel-froyo-222-179-4-signed.zip)
4). Wiped data / factory reset + wiped cache parttion
5). Installed ROM from zip file (on the SD card)
The mistake that I think I made was not rebooting enough between the steps, e.g.: flashing froyo, wiping, installing ROM, etc. I probably should have rebooted between every step above (the wisdom of retrospect!!!).
At any rate I cannot boot the phone into bootmenu / clockworkmod, instead I just get the little android guy, with the hovering exclamation mark contained within an ominous triangle! There are no options on the screen, and physically pressing the volume up / down, and / or power button has no effect.
Suggestions on how to get clockworkmod back are highly sort after.
Kind Regards,
Davo
Do it correctly from the begining:
start RDSlite and choose appropriate sbf.-> power off the phone -> press vol up and power for 3 sec. ->release power ->attach USB cable and wait till connect ->flash sbf ->with superoneclick do the root ->copy the ROM+gapps+(optional) custom kernel to sdcard -> install 2ndinitdefy v2.3 apk-> reboot ->run 2init -> reboot in bootmenu (or press vol- when blue LED) -> from custom recovery wipe data/cache, wipe dalvik(from advanced) ->install ROM and gapps +(optional custom )kernel in that order ->wipe again cache and dalvik ->reboot ->enjoy
Encountered a driver error but overcame it...

I think that I bricked it even more...!
Hi pgreed,
I have successfully flashed sbf using RSD Lite, however now my phone won't boot at all. I can't get it to power up, the light won't even come on unfortunately. If I plug the phone into a power outlet and push the power button a white light comes on, but otherwise nothing.

You can't brick defy so easy. Pull out the battery and put it back with the vol- pressed. If nothing appear keep press the vol- button and press the power for 3-5 sec. depress power and keep press vol- until the boot menu (defy recovery) appear. From there do a wipe of data/cache and dalvik and reboot.
If unluckly nothing happen in 2-3 minute then do another flash of sbf (attention of which sbf you use!!).
Thanks again - unfortunately the only screen that I get up when pressing the various volume button / power button combinations is one with a little green "android man", above him is floating an ominous triangle with an exclamation mark in the middle! ~
Got there in the end...
Hi pgreed,
Thanks for all of your help, I got there in the end, wherever there is...! LOL
At any rate your instructions are the ones that I will follow in future, and I won't be bothering with ADB or typing any commands at a command prompt.
Ultimately I had to try a couple of different sbf files before coming across one that would play nice.
To enter the recovery menu I had to press both the up / down volume buttons, and the power button all at once, but I suspect that this was due to the specific sbf file that I installed.
Anyway all said and done I now have a Defy with CM10 and gapps for Jellybean. Was it all worth it, highly debatable - but I am passing the phone onto a friend, so hopefully he will enjoy it more than his current old school phone.
I will continue to stick with my HTC Sensation, which in my mind is a pretty hard phone to beat!
Kind Regards,
Davo
Nice to see that you manage to do it. Just the record: when you have those android robot with triangle if you've pressed both vol + and - the recovery menu has to appear.
Yes, the ADB method is correct, but is more prone to give headache.

No Fastboot?

So I'm getting stuck on the nexus boot screen and the OS will not load. Decided to to just flash the stock image and start from scratch. I'm able to get into stock recovery but unable to boot into Fastboot/bootloader from there. It just kicks me back to try and start the OS. When I get to the loading screen it shows dead Andy with a triangle and "no command" instead of being able to select recovery/bootloader/start system normal. I am unlocked and was running the stock image 8.0.0 before all this happened. No root. I've been reading that asus or nexus screwed something up. So am I bricked? I've tried to adb sideload from recovery but in getting a verification error.
Edit: Problem solved. I'm an idiot. There is a lag for when the NP Google logo comes on till the screen actually recognizes and shows up. Therefore, I was holding the button too long and it passing fastboot and going directly into recovery.
I'm stuck at the same point and thinking that i am just holding the reset button too long.
Got any idea on how long you held it for? I just seem to go directly into recovery and get no access to fastboot to do anything...

I honestly cannot remember, Maybe 3 to 5 seconds? As soon as I see that there is a signal yo the TV I let go. I know that if you do hold the button to long that it will go directly into recovery. Just start timing it at a point when you plug the power cord in and start working from there.
Hold the button / watch the LED

When you apply power the tiny led lights up solid. You should hold the button down until you see the light change to a blinking response, then let go. After that you will see the Google unlock and then you will get the fastboot screen.
I wish it was that easy. I have tried that. I can get the device into the recovery menu, but not into fastboot.
From the recovery menu, I can select “reboot into fastboot” but it just goes back into the bootloop “Google” screen.
The other issue is that the light never flashes. If I hold the button down, it just either reboots, or never flashes.
If I release the button when the Google logo comes up, it will go to the laying down Android with open chest and red exclamation mark in a triangle and the words “no command” under it.
If I press and hold the reset button for 5 seconds, then release it, it will boot into recovery, where I can select a few things.
When in recovery, the only thing I can get to connect to my PC is “sideload”. If I try and side load anything, such as magisk, I just get verification errors.
I cannot get the device to connect as a device. I cannot get it into fastboot. I have done nothing else too it. It was working last week when I turned it on, albeit YouTube wasn’t, and on the weekend I went to use it and it was dead and showing the “Google” logo screen.
So, unfortunately, due to there not being a “flashing” led, there seems to be no way of getting into fastboot.
I have even tried OP’s suggestion of timing the button hold and resetting at intervals of seconds, and this has also not worked, from 1 second all the way to 30 seconds...
let me add a "me too" Can't get into fastboot...even using adb reboot bootloader just reboots to recovery.

Can't you do an OTA image using recovery mode? Solution for me was to reflash using android 8 with the full google tool kit, doesn't work with a partial toolkit.
Same story here. Can't do OTA update either. I have a full kit too. I'm getting an error saying this update is for "fungu" devices. This is "". This probably means that it can't read even the device type. This is really horrible what Google has done! I tried loading different OTA versions as well. Same error.
Ideas?

NEXUS PLAYER IS THE FUGU OS
Went to the google Nexus images download page to get Android 8 OS and the platform tools (factory img). Installed the Win10 USB driver and then unzipped only the main first img zip file into the platform tools root folder. Enabled NP developer mode and enabled USB debugging according to google NP image download page instructions. Then restart NP into fastboot mode by holding the button down while plugging it in, holding button only until you see fast flashing LED will put you into fastboot mode. On PC, open command prompt and navigate to platform tools folder, then unlocked the device and ran the flash-all.bat file (see instructions). Bingo. If fastboot mode not available, you may want to see some of the youtube nexus bootloop videos on how to get into recovery mode and flash the OTA img instead. Flashing with Android 8 should free up about a gig of disk space. I relocked mine afterwards. Hope this helps.

Did you not read the part where I and other users said there is no flashing LED and there is no fastboot?
I got my old NP out today to follow your solution and I am still at my original problem. I cannot even get into fastboot. I can get to stock recovery, but that’s it. I cannot even use that to reboot into fastboot, as it just goes back to the bootlooping google logo screen.
I can get very limited ADB access to sideload, but that is it. No root. No fastboot commands.
I solved the issue by putting it in a box, forgetting about it and buying an Apple TV box.

Wasn't my issue, but I'd mentioned earlier having seen where OTA images can be installed using recovery mode to resolve the bootlooping.

Anyone else able to get past this? I get the following when i try to sideload the ota through the recovery.
