FAT32 partition can't be mounted (LG L3) - Optimus L3, L5, L7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

After partitioning SD card in FAT32 (1st partition, primary) and EXT2(2nd partition, primary) android system can't mount FAT32 partition. Notification area displays error message: "Empty external SD card: external SD card empty or file system..."
Link2SD's script is mounting EXT2 partition and I can link apps to it.
Tried following command through ADB shell which mounted FAT32 partition (it was visible to file manager and could be used), but the change was not noticed by android (notification area still displays the error message) and I has to be typed in after every reboot:
mount -rw -t vfat -o umask=0000 /dev/block/mmcblk1p2 <mountpoint> (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1962023&nocache=1)
Any idea how to solve this?

reformat your sdcard n try this partitions;
- FAT > primary > as minimum = 7Mb
- EXT2 > primary > as you needs
- FAT32 > primary > as remains size
idk idea what for that FAT partition, but that's all what you need to work on stock...
good luck then

Thanks, although I know how to partition SD card. I'm just lazy to do it because my phone is all set up the way I like.

i have a ext 2 partitioned 8gb card and would like to dump the extension and reformat in fat 32 only. Any tips on how to do this
Use the same application that you created the ext2 partition with. If you're running the Cyanogen recovery, just use Parted via the recovery console.
If you have Cyanogens Recovery Console
Then drop to console
And press enter
Then type
parted /dev/block/mmcblk0
then print to see how many partitions you have
then press
rm 1
rm 2
rm 3 if you have one
then press print to verify you removed them
then enter
mkpartfs primary fat32 0 ???? (whatever the end size of your memory card is and then your done
then press quit
reboot
that be great but i just unrooted phone as i'm givin to my sister any other way to recover my 8gb card
Paragon partition manager... If you can find a copy I'm sure you can reformat the card or redistribute the free space.
or you could just do a full memory card format from windows

a format won't recover the partitions, but you can do this in XP, from the Disk Manager (Control Panel:Administrator Tools:Computer Managementisk Management)...delete partitions and then create 1 partition, and then format.
mm0
get a linux live CD and use gparted to delete the ext2 partition then just extend the FAT32 partition, you won't lose any data except that on the ext2 and it is extremely user friendly
I would work ive done it before with a card that had 3 partition on it
i did a full memory card format using vista
then formated it to fat32 and all went well i got back all my memory

everytime i backup my rom it breaks my sd functionality

i dodged a bullet last night with reflashing my rom with many thanks to rytesyde for his help with that.
so i went to backup my rom this morning and i came across this.
----------------------------------------------------
no sd-ext found. skipping backup of sd-ext.
generating md5 sum...
backup complete
----------------------------------------------------
that happens all the time with any sd card
after that i reboot the phone and it goes into preparing sd card and then this happens
"The SD card has an unexpected problem. Tapping....."
i take the card out, format it reload my data back onto the card, and put it back in the phone everything is fine unless i try to backup again.
that is with a sandisk 16GB card
i have the 2GB card that came with the phone and that seems to work fine.
i can only guess its the card. but i havent had a single problem with the 16 gig card, ever.
so what i have done is backed the phone onto my 2 gig card, and use my 16 gig as i normally would.
any ideas, suggestions. fixes?
have you ever found out what the problem is with this? i have noticed that mine is not recognizing the sd-ext partition. i have formated my card with ubuntu, and even with amon-ra 1.7 on my G1. each time i try tou mount sd-ext, it says it's not found or some problem. i have even tried using the various varietis of clockwork for the Shift and even tried using clockwork on an original EVO. i have tried with the stovk 2gb as well as a class 2 8gb and a class 6 8gb.

Your sdcard is partitioned or no
Sent from my HTC Knight using MikRom(again)
sd-ext is used for Apps2SD and this is not currently implemented on any ROMs for the Shift.
Not sure what the issues are with the OPs SD card but might want to buy a new one. I'm not sure the SD-ext is related

I think the recovery was just looking for a partitioned sdcard..ext4 is used by evervolv if I'm not wrong and if it isn't partitioned cwm will still check it..in short sdcard isn't broken
Sent from my HTC Knight using MikRom(again)
i still cant figure out why CWM wont recognize the sd-ext part of my card. i have the newest flavor thats wimax friendly. i have tried placing the partition before and after the fat32 part. still no go. i have reformatted the entire card to fat32 and then tried parting it in CWM. it coed through the process as if it's formatting it and when i go back in to check, it's not there, ot it again doesnt recognize it. i have tried every combination i could come up with and still no beans.
eventually there will be other supported roms for the shift that could/would use the ext4 part. right now i'm running the cm6.1.1 flavor because it's not SENSE and is a fraction of the size of that monster ROM. i can deal with not having MMS.
i'm just curious if anyone else is having problems getting their device to recognize the sd-ext
IE go to mounts in CWM and click on mount sd-ext. mount or no mount?
partition a card with CWM and see if it creates an sd-ext part and if so, does it recognize it afterwards.
i'm about to try this: re-format the entire card to fat 32 in ubuntu, then try to reformat to ext4 and fat32 in CWM. i no CWM wont recognize the sd-ext afterwards, but im going to see in ubuntu if CWM created the ext4 part.

alright here is a play by play...
1. deleted ext4 and fat 32 in ubuntu
2. placed the card in my EVO (not shift for now) and entered fastboot then recovery (CMW)
3. > advanced > partition sd card
4. chose: ext size - 1024M then swap size - 0M
5. "patitioning sd card... please wait..."
6. "done!"
7. > ***go back***
8. > mounts and storage
9. > mount /sdcard - mounted
10. > unmount /sdcard - unmounted
11. > mount /sd-ext - message
"E:unknown volume for path [/sd-ext]"
"Error mounting /sd-ext!"
12. remove card and connect to ubuntu
13. open gparted
14. mounted as fat32-6.45GB and ext3-976.76MB ~~~just now noticed that CWM made the sd-ext as ext3!!~~~
15. unmount ext3 then formatted to ext4
16. close gparted and remount drive - fat32-6.45GB and ext4-976.76
17. unmount drive and place back in EVO
18. entered fastboot then recovery

Ill play with it in a bit and see if I can figure something out..have you tried formatting it through cwm? And using cwm to setup the partitions

Why are you partitioning the card with ext4? There is no apps2sd utilized for the Shift at this point.
CWM is parting the card as ext3. i used ubuntu to change that to ext4. CWM doesnt recognize the ext3 or 4. it created the ext3 and doesnt even recognize it. i'm wondering if it has something to do with an incompatability with the evo and evoshift's hardware and the CWM's software design. a quirk or two. i was under the assumption that the evo shift was basicly the same as the G2, Desire Z, and the (rumored?) Merge.
just realized you asked why... sorry. just because there isnt at this point, doesnt mean it could/would not be used later. i just noticed it wasnt working, so asked the question as to why. it seems as if it should work.

[Q] Failed to setup APP2SD

Hey guys,
I decided to setup my sd card today cause my phone internal memory was constantly running out. I followed the stickies on how to partition the SD using EASEUS. After I partitioned the app2sd partition, i booted up my phone. The phone says there is no sd card. So i rebooted the phone and mount my SD card through recoverymod. I can still see my sd card and files inside of it, but it only has 7GB left instead of 8GB. EASEUS too only detects only one partition of 7GB. Other then mounting the storage through recoverymod's Mounting USB Storage, the sd card cant be mounted anywhere else. Recoverymod shows Error: failed to mount /sdcard for all functions that require the sd card.
Has anyone came across this problem and fixed it ?

It seems that your sdcard is corrupted.
Try to backup all data and reformat all partitions in linux
Windows can't recognize second partition on sdcard & it can sometimes mess up the partition.
Try GParted (google it).

Did you make a backup of your sd before creating the sd ext partition
? Should be written in each tutorial concerning sd ext creation.
Otherwise your data is no more.
As already written, windows is not able to read a sd ext partition. its fully right, that your fat32 partition shows only 7gb, the other 1gb is used from the sd ext and not viewable by windows.
...to create a sd-ext very easy go into cwm-advanced-format sd card and chose 1gb ext 0 swap.

Try this :
Backup all data in your micro SD.
Open & boot your computer using Gparted Linux / Parted Magic Linux / any other linux that has GParted / Parted inside its LiveCD
Run Gparted.
Delete all partitions.
Options:
Create sd-ext partition using GParted :
Create 1 fat32 Partition (as Primary) & adjust the size to your liking
Create 1 ext3/ext4 (as Primary...check if your android kernel support ext4) & adjust the size to your liking (usually 1 - 2 GB is enough)
Create sd-ext partition using CW Recovery:
Create fat32 Partition (as Primary...use all space)
Boot HD2 into AD Recovery
Go to Advanced menu
Format & choose sd-ext partition options
Flash your fav. ROM
Notes:
I personally like Parted better than GParted as it's a lot quicker & more advanced options (GParted is only a front-end for Parted).
Parted is for advanced user & TUI.
If you want to try Parted, make sure you read the manual & understand everything related to your actions (open console / terminal & type : man parted)
Use Parted using Root access (open console / terminal & type : sudo parted).
Use it with caution as it can wipe all of your hard drive data !

How to mount ext4 formated sd in Overcome ROM

This article is a google translate from my article in Greek from here: http://fwlia.k0uk0s.gr/2011/07/mount-ext4-formated-sd-android.html
Sorry for any language mistakes
Well, quick and dirty way to mount ext4 file system on the external sd.
1) We need external sd and kernel with ext4 support (Overcome has)
2) Format from a Linux machine the sd to ext4. The best way is to format the sd from a card reader. If you want fat32 partition, put it first and then the ext4
3) Put the card into the device and do boot. The android will grumble that there is a problem with sd, ignore it. If you have the first partition fat32, it will not say anything
4) In the internal sd (the fat32 which has the device from factory) you make a folder called external_sd. Most of you must have the directory
5) You install on android the http://market.android.com/details?id=os.tools.scriptmanager
6) you make a folder in the internal sd named scripts and there you make a text file named mount.ext4 and this content:
#! / System / bin / sh
mount-t ext4 / dev/block/mmcblk1p1 / sdcard / external_sd
7) If you put the first fat32 partition, then change mmcblk1p1 mmcblk1p2
8) Finally, in the Script Manager we installed before, pick the mount.ext4 and tick run as root and run at boot
Reboot and complete.
I have yet to find a way to become the ext4 unmount when the device connect to usb.
Now you can put that hd movies in sd whithout the 4gb per file fat32 limitation. You just need a linux machine to copy them in sd.
Have a nice day
Thanks Alot!
Dude, you are my hero! Hate FAT32 like the plague. Now I can rid myself of it once and for all!
yeah! it's done, good job. but i have some bug to report can not use Mass storage to connect to PC , can be connect by Samsung Kies only.

A normal Win PC doesn't know about ext4... As the OP states you'll need a Linux-machine to work with.

Minitool ext4 partition not applying.

Basically after I create an ext4 partition on unallocated space and then hit apply, it thinks for a few minutes then acts as if eveyrthing's cool, after I re-instert the card back, the space is AGAIN unallocated instead of being ext4 1gb.
Why is that happening? Thus preventing me from intalling NexusHD JB Rom.
Check the read only tab on the sd adapter if you are using one. With the card in can you copy and delete any files from the fat 32 partiton?

i saw that too, when i was setting up to multiboot wp7 and nativesd,,, , it wouldnt create and format the ext, , i got around it by creating the partition, applying, , exiting the app, removing the sd card, reinserting the sd, restarting minitool and formatting the partition. Took me several goes before it stuck.
so did you fix it finally?
EASEUS Partition Master 7.1.1 Home Edition
try this partition
both the sd's should be connected via usb not via card reader slot or something !
