I actually have the same issue although mine started prior to my upgrade to Windows 8 and I actually made no changes to the phone. If I do a fresh restart on the phone and computer I can get it to ADB Reboot but then from that point on its the same "device wasn't found". Anyone have ideas?

Me, facing this problem too...
But I have a solution:
Install Windows 7 again, multiboot if you like to keep the metro style...
Windows 8 just have many problems at all...
Many apps and games won't launch or sometimes won't launch (you need to restart to play it) like Half-Life.
So, I suggest you to use Windows 7 because it's easier to use and has higher performance compared to the new W8.

HTC Magic on Windows 7

Hello,
I've been googling around for a workaround but I cannot seem to find one that actually works. The problem is, when I try to connect my phone to the PC and, for example, want to flash it with an official rom - it simply cannot find it. It can find the SD card when I mount it.
When I put it in, Windows attempts to install a few drivers but fails at the ADB. According to several sites, I can just use the one from HTC Sync or from the Android SDK. It installs fine but it still doesn't seem to be able to contact my phone. I cannot sync it either.
Anyone got an idea? I seem to be on my last nerve.
I dont have any problems here. What windows beta release do you use?
Final version. Released today. It's Windows 7 Professional.
First, set the phone to debugg mode...
Ok here we go (at least it works for me)...
1.- Remove the drivers actuaslly installed (it might get tricky, as I don't know exactly how to remove the registry keys)
2.- Once you have cleaned windows from the drivers, connect the phone to the computer and let it recognize everything (Probably it would not recognize the ADB drviers, so far we are good)
3.- After the drivers are installed, go and check in control panel/Devices Administration (or something like that... I have Windows in spanish so I don't know exactly how is called on english... By the way, sorry if my english sound a little bit weird =P..)
4.- Here you should see probably a device as "not recognized" or what ever is called... Here is the part where you need to select the driver manually.
5.- Check the phone driver folder (you should have it, if you don't get them)
6.- When you see the different options, select the one called HTC Dream Composite ADB Interface
7.- You are done =D...
I hope I made it clear enough for you...
If you have any doubt, add me to MSN xnofrostx - hotmail.com (I don't put the @ because I hate spam xD so you should add only the xnofrostx =P...
Hope you can get it to work...
I couldn't, for the life of me, get it to work so I put Windows XP on a vmware and flashed it through there. Works wonders.
Sorry for not being able to help.
I run Windows 7 Evaluation copy. I have had no problems. In fact there was nothing for me to set up, it just saw it on first attempt.

CyanogenMod 4.1.9999
I cannot sync either, when installing the sync program it gives an error but continues installation, then my phone says it cannot detect htc sync on my computer, but im gonna try this link http://www.mydigitallife.info/2009/08/24/workaround-for-htc-hero-sync-problem-in-windows-7/

Sprint HTC Hero and HTC sync problem in win 7

Hey guys,
I am sure this is a topic that has come up in the past, so bear with me.
i recently got a sprint HTC hero(converted by a friend from an iphone)
i hooked it up to my pc and i can't get HTC sync or windows to recognize my phone due to the drivers bug. Windows will only recognize it as a storage device.
I am currently running Windows 7 64 home edition.
i tried the solution posted on the unlocker but have had no luck.
(new user won't let me post link lol)
any help would be great
Thanks!
After posting the above post, i decided to rework everything...
it took me a few hours but i discovered a work around for the work around that wasn't working for me lol
thanks to everyone who read the post
sorry for the waste of space :-/
and you're going to share it with us, right?

Indeed,... Let others know how to solve the issue.
Hey guys sorry it took so long for the reply, I was dealing with a family crisis and hadn't had much time to do anything.
you will have to find your sources for Sync and the drivers because i can't post links in the forum.
This is how I solved my problem:
1.Download latest specialized sync tool from HTC, namely HTC Sync 2.04 from HTC
2. Install the downloaded program on the computer. At this moment, your computer still won't recognize the HTC Hero.
3. Manually update the HTC drivers from Windows 7, using the Windows Vista drivers
by installing HTC Sync software on a machine running Windows Vista and then copying the drivers (namely androidusb.cat, androidusb.inf, androidusb.sys, htcrndis.cat, htcrndis.inf and WdfCoInstaller01007.dll in HTC Drivers folder) over to the Windows 7 machine. or you can manually download the drivers from someplace like theunlockr.
4.Extract the driver into a folder. For example, %SystemDrive%:\Program Files (x86)\HTC\HTC Driver\Driver Files\Vista_x64 (for the Windows 7 64-bit) or %SystemDrive%:\Program Files (x86)\HTC\HTC Driver\Driver Files\Vista_x86 (for the Windows 7 32-bit) accordingly.
5.open devices and printers
6. right click your android phone and choose 'properties'
7. go to the "hardware" tab and again select "Properties"
8.on the general tab click"Change Settings"
9. Go to "driver" tab
10. Click "update Driver"
11. The window that pops up will ask how you want to find the driver. Be sure to select the option that allows you to browse your computer for the driver.
12. Navigate to where you saved and unzipped the driver.
13. reconnect phone
now if everything went well HTC sync should recognize your phone.
now if this doesn't work msg me and i will try and help you to the best of my abilities
I know this is a rather old post...but I have recently just switched back to the Hero after taking a trip to webOS land...I have followed these instructions to the letter, but my phone still does not show up in Devices and Printers...Do I need to be using exactly the version of HTC Sync mentioned here, or should newer versions work as well?
Also, in other places I have read, it mentions that the Hero should pop-up a notification asking to allow a connection to the computer or something...I haven't seen this...is there somewhere in an app setting that I may need to change a default value?

Stay calm bro. There is absolutely nothing wrong with your Shift. No need to contact HTC for now.
1. The USB extension kit has nothing to do with your original issue - Wi-Fi
2. Have you enabled Wi-fi. You know how to do this? Hit the Shift Control Centre button and then enable wifi from there.....
3. You need to install drivers
4. If all else fail start all over.
5. To re-install Windows Vista is piece of cake. Hit FN+F3 when the Shift is re-starting and you will be re-installing Vista in seconds.
6. But... Dont panic! Installing Windows 7, back to Vista, then off to 7 again and even back will not damage your device in any way.
7. Forget about the HTC people and their warranty bull****. As soon as you re-install Vista the device will be exactly the way it left the factory.....
8. You are in the right forum where the xda Community will assist you for as long as you are in need....

[Need Help] "Missing operating System"

Hi all,
I don't know if my problem as already been solved but I didn't found anything.
At first, I have to say I installed windows 8 as principal operating system (I know, it's stupid...).
I used windows 8 without big problem since the deployment but today, after a bug, I reboot the PC and now I have just black screen with the message "operating system missing"... The system does not boot, just black screen with the message
Does anybody have an idea how I can solve this problem ?
(Sorry for my english)
you can put dev preview DVD or USB whatever you used to install.
and run the installation and then repair Windows 8 (if it detects a Windows installed). with system restore or maybe it will repair. if not you will have to refresh your win8.
also it can be (if you have more hard drives) that you aren't starting the one with Windows 8. so you can try and see in bios if thats the case. thats when i have seen this message.
Thanks for your answer.
When I run the pc, it doesn't launch anything, just the black screen. It's probably the bios but I can't do anything, just the message but I'm not allowed to do anything :-(
Sent from my HTC Sensation 4G using XDA App
Finally, the problem is quite solved.
When I have this message, by pushing ctrl+alt+suprr, if I'm enough fast, I can push F12 and choose wich part I want to run. Then I placed my W7 backup on CD and runned it.
It was not easy but W7 is successfull restored.
Of course, all my personal data were deleted...
But whe I reboot the PC, I've always the message "missing operating system", then I have to ctrl+alt+suprr and after F12, and then choose the hard drive, and the PC W7 boot.
It's not yet perfect but for the moment the PC works...
Thats exactly i told you. of course it changes between bios and motherboard. your problem is not your windows. its the priority of your harddrive.
I dont know what motherboard you have.
so i will find pictures to explain what you have to look for. because you didnt have to repair your Windows if thats the case. the problem its (like i mentioned) your harddrive priority.
so you go to your bios and look for the Boot section.
http://www.motherboards-reviews.com...ges/ASUS_M2N68-AM_PLUS_BIOS_boot_settings.jpg
if you go to Boot Device Priority, you can check if your harddrive is second (the one with your OS) and if you want your cd or usb to boot first if not you can leave it first.
http://motherboards-reviews.com/ASU...s/ASUS_M4N78-AM_BIOS_Boot_Device_Priority.jpg
something like this.
and if that part is right you have to go to Hard disk drives
http://www.laptops-battery.co.uk/images/maintain/bios-boot-hard-disk-drives-445x261.jpg
so there you have to check if your harddrive is first or the correct one. and ready... its probably this Hard disk devices thing. and then you don't have to use that method of changing manually which boots
Thanks for your help
I'm not at home for the moment. I'll try your method tomorrow or wednesday, I'll let you know, but thank you for the time you spent on my problem.

Trouble with Windows 10? Here to help and explain!

Hi!
If you're here, Windows 10 got in your way. Let me explain why.
You see, Windows 10, for some reason has an administrator permission... No, not that administrator permission. Because reasons, Windows 10 has TWO admin permissions! You are the standard one. The superior one is hidden, as a separate user! I don't get it either.
There's a command prompt that unlocks the primary admin account. A quick Google search will yield multiple guides on this matter.
Many, if not all your problems will be solved via this account. I spent 3 hours trying to install some drivers, before I was dumbstruck by the "God Account"... Install everything through that, and use your account normally!
I recommend hiding God in your PC after, since it has total power and some clever virus software might simply hijack it to install itself in the depths of your system, where no antivirus has permission to touch it...
God account on Windows 10 - Cause We hate You! Now, buy a subscription for solitaire!!
Windows 10 if f**k**g $hit.....
Previously I spent days trying to get drivers/ADB working. Impossible. I then used my spare laptop having Windows 8.1, effortless and no issue, the whole process of unlocking bootloader, flashing recovery and SuperSU was instant.
It was not possible with Windows 10 but with Windows 8.1 it was so easy and no issues with drivers or software. Windows 10 is cancer.

It's possible that you guys just had previous drivers installed that were conflicting. I doubt it's Windows 10, as mine connected easily and quickly. Some phone drivers tend to stay in your system eventhough you might not clearly see them. I also used the 15 seconds ADB installer, for what it's worth. Maybe you guys should try that.

Even when trying the 15 second ADB installer, made no difference...
For this very reason, I upgraded my PC from Windows 10 to Windows 8.1, couldn't of been any happier.
I second the adb installer. It's easy, although the topic is more related to drivers that are outright rejected by the system. Sometimes, it's the fault of the certificate, or the lack of~. If there were old drivers, the device would've been recognised, and not treated as an "unknown device". I was livid when my Nexus 7 wouldn't work. XP It's basically a method of avoiding possible bugs or certificate issues. Again, you're correct in suggesting the adb installer! It takes the faff out of the job!

I have a clean install of Win 10 also. Maybe that's why I didn't have connection/driver issues. Reason I mentioned old drivers being hidden was because that's exactly what happened to me with a Nexus 6 before doing a clean install. My computer wouldn't recognize it also, and it just kept showing unknown device. I had old Samsung and ZTE drivers still hiding in my system, and the only way I found them was when I used this Nexus tool: https://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1766475
Hii to all having issues with windows and android..
One thing
I have already the fall creators update before it is even released ( Oktober 17 it will be official )
Love to use windows and usually do not have trouble with android and Windows
The thing is, if you need the extra administrative privilege you need to go under
Settings then
recovery then
advanced then
restart the system for advanced options
And then choose for some drivers like adb fastboot and other stuff.. choose some opitons
You will be given like options from 1 to 9 or 10..
then you press the number 7
Number 7 means you will remove the extra driver signature the windows is asking for every driver
After pressing 7 the system will reboot..
then you need to reinstall the adb fastboot drivers
Now it will give you a window with red color .. asking you.. do you want to install this driver without the signature that is usually required..
and then you click on yes..
from that point on you will allways have that driver installed and
working in the way it should or let me say in the way every driver works after you install it..
And yes it is trouble sometimes to get adb and other android stuff working on windows 10
couse it sometimes is the way that you have all the correct files and did all the correct steps
But the thing is it is not working couse windows 10 is in that point not letting you to do that thing
couse it things its harmfull for you system or sometimes you just need to put one setting off or on
and Voillaa everything is working..
So do not give up on things try to google out the solution by the error or you tube is having
often some good tutorials on what and how it needs to be done in windows 10
