XZ Navigation Bar when using apps - Xperia Z General

Something which has been really annoying me is how the virtual navigation bar does not disappear when using apps. It disappears when watching videos etc but on all the apps I have used so far, Vice city, temple run, BTD, Dead trigger etc it stays there taking up a fair bit of the screen.
Does anyone know if this is because the of the app developers or is it something android or sony might change soon. Or is there anyway we can already get rid of it?

How are you going to go back to home if the bar is gone?

Drag from side/bottom to bring back navigation bar? two fingers required so you don't accidentally do it.

Two fingers required for this stupid thread.

AW: XZ Navigation Bar when using apps
nvm.

it is feasible to do it, we have it on the one set of tablets, but I've never been able to get the framework code working on other devices.
Full screen, and the nav bar goes completely. swipe up from off the bottom of the screen and the nav bar reappears.
this predated what the PA Roms do btw by quite a few months.
It works a treat
however what the OP is asking for sounds more to me like one of my pet hates with this rom, the icons disappear in selected apps but not all,
the nav bar is still there but replaced by dots, when you tap the area of the navbar the icons reappear.
some of the apps I use I know do full screen and specifically call that feature, but are ignored so the standard icons remain on screen at all times.

You can use full!creen on Play Store or fullscreentoggle to hide navigation bar & status bar (requesting root). Good luck!

It's possible to hide the Nav bar in CM ROM's. Hold the power button and press "hide nav bar" or something like that, and it's the same procedure when you want it back.

There's also button saviour, https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.smart.swkey
For when there's no navbar
full!creen works really well, I even brought it I'm that impressed!

Youtube does it, DICE Player manages to do it, yet QuickPic doesnt/cant.
I am under the impression that my LT30p equipped with JB which is very similar to the Z's fw could not do it at all, I could be mistaken though.

auto-hide softkey bar?

Hi to all
I'm a new owner of a Nexus 7...nice device...BTW...
I don't understand why with a stock JB 4.1.2 ROM, the soft key bar auto hide itself only with the video playback...
if I playgames the bar is always there...
It's a waste of precious pixel for me...in games like shadowgun I always have this ugly bar on bottom...
I know that some cooked ROM has this feature but I'd like to know if I can installa an hack or something to make it avaiable on stock rom...thanks a lot
Oh another question: do you think that it's better to root the device and install a cooked rom like CM or Paranoid? how does it could be better than the stock rom on such a powerful device?
thanks
I don't believe you'd be able to flash a hack to do this because I believe it requires a lot of changes to the framework. Flashing a ROM is great, but not necessary on our tablets since they're so powerful. The only reason why I do it is so that I can get the extended power menu and edit the notification widgets. I also just got back into using tablet mode again on Cookies and Cream.
It won't work, the API for it is designed for videos. If you are playing a game, you will most likely have to tap the screen, whereas when you watch a video, you don't have to touch the screen. Touching the screen enables the soft keys, I think you can see the problem here.
Beamed from my Grouper.
Um take notes from the kindle fire. It has a perfect auto hide for the soft key menus. While in apps, it puts a little tiny tab in the middle edge that when touched, brings back the full keys. Works perfect. This should be implemented in jellybean by default. Wasting screen space is so annoying.
Sounds like a good idea, however it would be a bit different than with video since you are touching the screen. I do find myself bumping the buttons during game playback, perhaps if they instituted a swiping motion to bring it up?
I think in aokp you can completely disable it and use a long press of the power button to access the buttons.

Guys! Just try GMD Gesture from play store and you would be able to hide the soft keys with finger gesture and bring them back when you want them.
Hope this helps!

Just installed the lite version which does not enable this feature. However, it says it will show/hide the status bar... are you sure it works on the soft keys also? I don't want to buy it and find it only works on the status bar. I guess I can also email the app developer and report back.
EDI: Found the XDA thread through the app's play store info... appears to hide the soft keys also. I think it will be well worth the $5. Thanks!
The soft keys are, for me, one of the most annoying 'features' of Jelly Bean. Why waste all that screen space?
There is a reason why nexus 7 is 1280x768 not 1280x720. the additional 48 pixel is for the navigation bar.. Otherwise it won't have16:9 ratio.
I don't mind the nav bar, but I find it wasted space that so few buttons are there. I miss the search button especially... Wish the stock rom was a bit more customizable there. Still, it's a great device overall...

Deactivate On Screen Buttons

Iam searching for a possibility to deactivate or make the Onscreenbuttons transparent, to use the Full Resolution of the Display.Maybe there is a app that Activate/deactivate that on the Top bar.

There is an app, personally I used AOKP toggles on the Nexus 7 (im sure it will come to 4 soon) or in systemUI theres an XML you can edit (no clue which...) and set navigation bar height to something lower like 40 odd. 96 was stock on GNEX and 48 was stock on Nexus 7. Idk what's going to be stock on this device so make sure its not unsuitable

This is what i want to do, but for the entire system, maybe by long pressing the power button
Read this:
n Android 4.0, the APIs updated with new flags of SYSTEM_UI_FLAG_HIDE_NAVIGATION, that requests the navigation bar hide completely. Be aware that this works only for the navigation bar used by some handsets (it does not hide the system bar on tablets). The navigation bar returns to view as soon as the system receives user input.
You can also use SYSTEM_UI_FLAG_LOW_PROFILE flag, to enables “low profile" mode for the system bar or navigation bar. Navigation buttons dim and other elements in the system bar also hide. Enabling this is useful for creating more immersive games without distraction for the system navigation buttons, and SYSTEM_UI_FLAG_VISIBLE flag to request the system bar or navigation bar be visible.
There's a AOKP ROM for the Nexus 4 which has
Nav Bar Transparency
Nav Bar Button Reorder: Back-Home-Search-Menu
Nav Bar Color Picker
Nav Bar Button Glow Duration: Off, Fast, Slow
Nav Bar: Long press to Search button
Nav Bar Hide on Lockscreen
So if you use that ROM with an app like HideBar it should meet all of your needs.

Bottom bar "open notifications" button mod?

Is there a mod that would give me a button on the bottom bar, to open notifications when tapped? The way I usually use this tablet, the top left is the exactly least convenient place to swipe when I'm holding it from the bottom.
I'm on the 3g model but if such a mod exists already, I presume it can be adapted.

Nova or Apex launchers will let you do that very easily.
In the settings you can choose what you want to happen when you tap the home key when you are on the home screen. One of the choices is pull down notifications.

OK, but that's still not a button in the nav bar. I'm looking for a button in the nav bar that pops open the notifications tray, without leaving whatever app I'm in.

i think he's saying to get that button you would need top use a custom launcher such as apex or holo.:good:
With Nova Launcher (I don't have any experience with Apex):
- tap and hold on homescreen
- select "Nova Actions"
- select "Expand Notifications"
When the shortcut is created, drag it to your nav bar.

... and in what ROM are you allowed to drag launcher shortcuts to your nav bar???
To be clear, by nav bar, I mean the black bar along the bottom with the back, home and multitask icons. I am looking to see if there is a mod that can change that to: Back, Home, Multitask, Open Tray.
In some of the cm 10 roms . in the settings /system settings / navigation bar.. You can add two buttons . And change what those do... I am not sure if you can set it to pull notifications or not but i think you might be able to.. I know the euroskank and paranoid android roms have this..
This takes a framework re work.. You will not get this feature in a launcher running on the stock android frame work.. Someone could code this. But doing so would break compatibility with other things .
There would be NO Stock solution for this The ones people are describing above will not work. You can add it to the dock if you have it enables..
Now most launchers Nova prime (what i use) has screen gestures. You could set that to swipe down bring notifications down swipe up close .
Good Luck
Good to know. I guess we'll have to see if devs can expand their ROMs to include 3G, even in absence of full source...

Sorry, my bad, I thought you meant the dock.
Any progress or answers?
I'd like some sort of solution to this.
Even something as simple as opening the notifications with a tap instead of a swipe would make a world of difference.
Maybe you should try a ROM with Tablet UI?

Hide navigation bar?

Is there a launcher that can hide the navigation bar on the home screen?
S' mobitela
No. Why do you only want to hide it while on the home screen?
Edit: If you just want to hide it period, you can use this. http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=1243352&d=1344188251

You need a custom rom like PA in order to do that.
Or use lmt so which is pie, so you can now hide the navigation bar buttons in expanded mode.

You can also use gmd gesture control if you want to stay on stock but quickly hide/unhide navbar using gesture, even on custom roms its faster than having to hold power button and clicking expanded desktop

This is a great way to permanantly hide navbar but keep notification bar on stock but there is 2 problems i encountered with this method, 1st prob was the 3 dots would dissapear from chrome etc and on 4.2.2 i encoutered a flicker problem quite often but it sounds like the OP wanted to just hide the bar on home screen which im not sure why lol but if thats what he wants his best bet would be gmd gesture control or custom rom with expanded desktop mode

Agreed gmd gesture looks pretty cool.

All other app hide navigation bar and notification bar. I'm developing new root app that will allow to hide just navigation bar and replace it with auto hide status bar replacement :fingers-crossed:. No system files modification and no reboot required, but root is still needed.
Try it here and let me know what you think.

Transparent Buttons on 3rd Party Launchers?

I tried searching for this but couldn't find it so sorry if it's a repeat. The status bar and navigation buttons are transparent when at the stock home screen. Is there any way at the moment to keep this going when using 3rd party launchers such as Apex? I understand it's the phone reading it as having an app open, therefor disabling of transparency, but I'd love to have that feature on the home screen of other launchers.
I noticed that the status bar only seemed to be transparent when an LG bg is used. Use a picture, and it is shaded. Also seems related somehow to the color of the buttons, but have not figured it out yet.
I am an Apex fan, but I think I will wait a bit before trying it.
Depends on where you get backgrounds

I believe it depends on where you get the images, if you get them from an app. I was using an app called Backgrounds HD and every time I applied one, it wouldn't scale it properly and the status bar and nav buttons would be black. If I uninstalled the app and used one called Picspeed, they worked just fine with transparency on the stock launcher.
