[Q] Nexus rear microphone? - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Though Nexus 7 has two microphone, however I noticed that the mic on the left has never been used to record audio in any app, even stock camcorder record mono audio stream from the mic on the top.
Choosing "rear mic" in recording apps doesn't work as well.
So how does it work ? Is the problem of Android API or hardware?
Sorry for the missing 7 in title(๑>﹏<๑)

i might be making a another face-palm here. but i think the bottom is for portrait mode and the top one is for landscape mode?
it could also be that one is used for recording and the other for noise cancellation? switching between the two while in use could be posing the problem?

Hardware is quite good
ALC5642 should be an HD Audio process chip, and it works really well in Ubuntu:

Directly record audio from two mic with arecord with channel>1, I got 32bit float, 192kHz PCM stream
For 4 channel, I got FL,FR, C(???where does it come from?) and an empty sream
FL=Left mic
FR=Top mic
The quality of recording and playback in Ubuntu is much better than Android :good: ,a simple command of
Code:
arecord -c2 -f U16_BE -r48000|oggenc -o recording.ogg -q 7 -
gives a better recording quality than most of apps in Android.

[Guide] Sound fix that works (Omina 7/Focus)

Thought you focus owners might find this useful as well:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1342622
I made it easier for Focus owners (rather than bouncing on Omnia 7 threads/wiki).
To increase overall loudness of the phone (Focus/Omnia7):
Run Diagnosis, type *#0002*28345# to get to the "Sound Tuning" menu.
Locate "Device Gain" (lower part of the screen)
The first value identifies the output. Legend:
2 - ear speaker (call)
5 - headphones
7 - back speaker (default shown)
Standard values for a Focus AT&T/Rogers are:
2 600 -1600
5 400 -1100
7 1200 -500
(you can check by entering the device number and pressing Get).
Suggested values in the Omnia thread (to improve loudness):
2 1000 -1600
5 1200 -1200
7 0 -500
For my AT&T/Rogers focus, only 5-headphones seem to work (it's louder).
Anyone else?
On another note, Roger's speakerphone seems a tad louder that AT&T's, on the default values...

Don't forget to thank ballajalla for his post!
Good idea I wish more people used the different devices wiki's though, makes it so much easier to find useful information.
I stand corrected! (Back) Speaker is also louder, not just headphones as I originally stated. However, NOT if you play in Zune!
So: alarm sounds, notifications, calls/ringtones ARE louder, but playing a song or video in Zune is the same audio level as before! Maybe playing in Zune is on another Device gain value? (different from 2, 5 or 7)
I still don't see a difference in call loudness but that might be me
Everything sounds much better except for Zune video for me as well. Actually playing a movie trailer in an app like Flixster is terrible too. If my volume is under '12' I can't hear anything...have to turn it to max (30) to hear. I would love the values to adjust volume for video playback if there are any. Also has anyone noticed any improvement with sound auxiliary out to a car stereo? That volume seems extremely low also.
Has anybody been able to increase bass through this diagnosis app?

2 questions new head unit install

Hi all-
at one time I was interested in converting a tablet into a head unit, but lacked the know-how so I finally just bought one from ali express and installed it; android 4.4 and I can't post links so you can
use the ali search and enter: 2 DIN Android 4.4 7 Inch Bluetooth Audio In Dash to find the specific unit that looks like

For the most part, it's great- but I have two questions that would make it even better
(1) I can play music and audiobooks (two different apps) over bluetooth, and the audio is perfect. When I get bluetooth calls though, it starts with a blast of static and then nothing- I assumed it was a mic or feedback problem, but I just played a voicemail recording from the phone AT&T "visual voicemail" app, and it did the same thing even though that is just playing a recording and shouldn't be using the mic at all. Does anyone know what if there is some other difference between 'audio out' apps that might cause some to work find, and others to have problems? There are rear ports for audio input, but I don't think those replace the mic, so for now I'm stuck with external troubleshooting (I'm not ready to take it apart and start doing surgery on the unit)
[EDIT: it also plays the audio from Google Maps with no problem]
(2) The unit has a very long splash screen- so long, that I can get out my 150' driveway and down the block before it goes away and allows BT to connect to play my audiobooks. I looked through the menus but haven't found a way to shorten that screen. I realize this may require rooting if it is not a publically available setting. Where should I be looking (or is it stored in a file somewhere?), and if rooting is required, how does a newbie like me figure out the best options for rooting, preferably leaving the rest of the OS as-is so I don't accidently jack up the reverse and forward camera functions, etc?
I'm not a frequenter of XDA, but this seems to be the most knowledgable place for this type of thing- so I appreciate you pointing me in the right direction
Many thanks!

I bought this radio on Black Friday of 2017 and ever since then it seems like it has just been one headache after another. I've done Desktop Support, been a NOC engineer, and currently pursuing my OSCP so I'm not computer illiterate; yet this makes me feel like I am. One of the things that interested me was the 10-band stock EQ. Then that was removed. Fine, I'll go to V4A. Nope. That doesn't work anymore. I knew beforehand that some of the buttons on the face wouldn't do what they stated they'd do but the option to reprogam them in the Joying settings only works on touchscreen buttons, not physical ones. The radio is fine. Just fine, could be better. Basically here's a short list of what I'm trying to do. I've tried more apps, APKs, and reflashes in the past few months than I can even begin to remember. I don't care how much effort this takes to get it going, as long as it just works. I don't know if what I'm asking for is even possible but at this point I'm tired of going in circles.
-A good, 10-band, virtualizer EQ that works on the entire unit. Something that will affect every bit of audio played.
-A way to reprogram the front-facing buttons.
-Preferably a better radio with HD funtionality
-A quick way to tether internet to the device. (I was using Bluetooth Tethering PRO but it made the unit super slow and unresponsive at times. Ideally gain connection by just plugging my phone into the USB connector but any way will work. I can't seem to get it to function. I'm on Verizon, which from what I've read restricts stuff like that.)
-A car launcher that keeps all functionality. (I was using Car Launcher AG but then I lost all functionality of the Bluetooth player unless I spammed source until I landed on it. Choosing BT Music only took me to the pairing screen.)
-Is there a way to replace stock apps? Like say I found a better app and wanted to replace a stock selection when Source scrolls through, could I do that? Like the Aux app for instance that has a video feed on it for no discernible reason

Can't record audio through stock camera app [Medium-Large]

I have a nexus 6p with android 8.1 and i have had this issue for about 6 months. I can't record any sort of audio while recording a video, this happens on stock camera, snapchat camera, Instagram camera, WhatsApp, messenger, etc. It is important to note that I CAN make calls and Video Calls in Messenger and WhatsApp, I can use google assistant (It detects when I say "Okay Google"), record voice notes in WhatsApp/messenger. It just doesn't record audio on video (Actually it does kind of record a "Shhhhhhhh" audio).
I've been investigating this and i have not found any solution. But i know there is one, since with this app called "Open Camera" I can choose which microphone use while recording videos and in the app configuration, in "audio source" the default option selected is Camcorder and with that option, I recorded a video and it had no sound, then I changed it to "External mic (if detected)" and after recording a video I discovered that it DOES record audio! So there's definitely a microphone that can be used while recording a video.

While I was searching a solution for this, I found in somewhat old (2016) Nexus Help forum, a thread of people with the same problem, and someone gave a weird solution that required a rooted device (Mine is rooted), but I don't really know if its viable since I have tried it and it just makes my phone stop recording ANY sort of audio (including calls and everything it was working) and stop reproducing ANY sort of audio, problem that I solved simply with a system backup that I did before in TWRP.
Screenshot of the Nexus Help Forum and the solution I saw.

So I was wondering if any of you have experienced this problem or if someone have found a solution to this, it would be even better if someone actually have tried the rooted solution! Thank you.

Take a shot any time I mention "Record", "Recording".
Take two shots any time i write something in Capital letters.

[VIPER4ANDROID] CleanAir - Universal Viper4Android profile for Apple AirPods

Oi, mates!
After browsing the interwebs for a couple of days in order to find a good Viper4Android profile for Apple AirPods, I ended up empty-handed so I decided to make my own profile aiming to be universally better with as many different genres of music as possible.
As usual, here's a warning you likely won't read:
I am not responsible for your damaged AirPods, ears, phone speakers blowing up or if your software decides it doesn't like you. If you come here and tell me I broke something of yours, I'll tell you to sod off. You're responsible, not me.
Click to collapse
Having that out of the way, let's get into the details because that's what you came for anyway.
The profile is the result of a couple of days of adjusting and fine-tuning the Viper4Android Bluetooth profile so it matches the AirPods. While AirPods are similar in design to the old, wired Apple EarPods, the hardware differs greatly making old profiles obsolete for the modern hardware. If you still want to use this profile for EarPods or other hardware, go ahead but it will likely sound like ****e as this is a very specific profile.
I've tested this profile numerous times with everything from Vocaloid music to polish Disco Polo and out of 135 songs only 2 sounded odd in some way making this a very universal profile that should work for most people.
The profile mainly adjusts the equaliser as well as Viper Bass and Viper Clarity, but it does have some other settings to give the sounds a bit more "oomph". You can play around with the settings but I don't think there's much more that can be done as I really played around with everything possible and any changes just make it sound worse in my opinion, but you may disagree and it's your device after all so do as y'all please.
To get the best effect out of your AirPods make sure to disable absolute volume in developer settings, otherwise, the headphones will be very quiet. I also recommend AirBattery which doesn't affect the audio quality but fills in the gaps regarding functionality with AirPods on Android. Check it out for yourself.
Lastly, enjoy.
Do you have a profile for V4A 2.7? Or screenshots of your settings to recreate the profile?
