[MOD] Reactivate Facebook Sync Setting in Stock 4.2.2 [WORKING!] - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

STOCK 4.2.2 ONLY! ODEX & DEODEXED
Okay I have got Facebook sync working again in order to do this you must be rooted and using a root explorer to transfer the files.
To begin download the files attached below.
Extract them either to your phone or copy them over to your phone.
Next using root explorer go to data/data/com.android.providers.contacts/databases
DELETE the file contacts2.db-journal.
Copy the contacts2.db from the extracted file to data/data/com.android.providers.contacts/databases when asked if you would like to over the file currently there do so.
Make sure the contacts2.db permissions are set to rw-rw---
Restart
After reboot copy ContactsProvider.apk from the extractd zip to system/app and when asked overwrite the current file
Make sure ContactsProvider.apk has permissions set to rw-rw-r--
After reboot load facebook app and sync options should be available and should sync.

Okay Guys I am currently working on getting Facebook Contact Syncing to work on stock 4.2.2 so far I've got the sync menu back in Facebook just no syncing, I'm having trouble figuring out where to edit the contacts2.db I know that I have to place the following column into the raw_contacts table: is_restricted but no luck finding where to place it. If anyone can help me I'll post the zip file with everything going so we can have facebook sync back.
I'm using this guide to help me but its not very clear on the part I'm stuck on. Anyone able to help?
Once I get stock going I'll look at getting other ROM's going that currently don't support it.
**AND BEFORE ANYONE SAYS HAXSYNC... I CURRENTLY USE THAT AND LOVE HOW CRISP THE PHOTOS ARE BUT IT DOES NOT SYNC PHONE NUMBERS WHICH IS WHAT I'M NEEDING**

You might try downloading a dump from a earlier version of android that supported Facebook Contact Syncing.
Then use a file compare tool like WinMerg to determine the differences and location of where "raw_contacts table: is_restricted" was inserted into supported versions.

Don't be a dummy like me...
If you intend to act stupid (like I did) and attempt this fix even though you aren't running a stock ROM, make sure you back up the ENTIRE "com.android.providers.contacts" directory... not just the files you are overwriting. If things go south, the whole directory can get deleted. I have no idea how this happened, but I assume it's the OS attempting to self-correct instead of exploding entirely.

Wish CyanogenMod would merge this. I would do this fix except for it would be overwritten after flashing a new CM build which happens several times a week.

How do you get the contacts to remember what contacts are joined? When I switch roms, I always have to rejoin/merge a few contacts. Does Google not remember??

Why should I give Facebook access to my contacts?
I prefer solutions like Haxsync who synchronize in one direction.

The main reason I wanted facebook back was so i could sync phone numbers none of the other apps provided this function I still use hacksync for ultra high quality contact photos though.

I haven't used Facebook in a while, but last I checked, the sync option for FB could be found under system settings somewhere?

The setting is there but with Stock android on the nexuses syncing does not work, Google had removed the white listing in contacts, so files have to be edited to readd syncing support

thanks.
Just go to Google Play get the official Microsoft mail application called: Hotmail Seven +, and configure it for Push, much more reliable than the stock mail client.
I'm trying to add Microsoft Exchange Server for work not Hotmail.
incidentally, if you're on exchange 2010 or office 365 then the mail client called touchdown ****s all over the stock client. Plus it will sync all the usual plus outlook notes...

thanks dr.ketan but those aren't options for me.
A friend rooted my device and set it up for me. That friend is busy and so am I these days. Flashing or hard resetting is difficult at this point.
Can't someone point me to the MS Exchange app so I can simply re-install it?
Thanks.
Try this first

If not works

Dr ketan,
I downloaded ES File Explorer but it didn't let me copy the file.
So i enabled Root settings in the settings of ES File Explorer then i also needed to Mount File System in settings to copy the file. I did that.
But it says file not Installed.
I dismounted system file but still doesn't let me install email.apk.
Thanks for your patience.
I m not familiar with es file explorer
But for root explorer, u just need to copy n paste to systrm/app folder you have to just press on w/r on top once before it.
Then long press on file n change the permission rw r r (just look othet apk there)
You need not to install, once you put file thr is enough.

Best to reflash a stock rom, and or the rom of your preference to get it back and be careful with removing stuff next time

starting from scratch is not an option.
@ketan:
email.apk is (in samsung roms) only the widget, there are also the "exchange services", which might be also important in this case.
also, which email version to choose (or for us: to provide) depends heavily on the OP's rom! if he is on ICS the GB email.apk wont work, even if he is on AOSP the stock samsung email.apk wont work, due to missing parts in the framework!
@OP:
if a data wipe is not enough (which i doubt, cause i guess the system app from /system/app is missing) you would have to reflash your system partition as well. then it should work again!

Many thanks for your detailed response.
I am running the following:
model #: GT-N7000
Android Version: 2.3.6
Baseband Version: N7000XXLA4
Kernel Version: 2.6.35.14-ver.3.2
[email protected] #3
Build number: Rocket-v19-XXLA4-eybee1970
I'm apprehensive about flashing or formatting because I am not very familair with the process.
A friend of mine rooted my device then installed rocket rom for me. I mean I know about it and watched him do it but to do it myself would require a lot of time. Then also I'll have to edit my device to get it to the way I want it... a hassle.
Why cant someone check what .apk files are needed for the exchange server on their device.
I will cross-check mine and the ones that are missing from mine will be added.
Should be as straightforward as that I think.
Thanks guys.

Hi guys,
Here i want to show my Rom Cleaner, its idea comes from => Here , so credits for the idea and the ini files i used as base belong to him
this app allows you to clean out unneeded crap and bloatware from your roms, before you flash them.
List of files to remove is about 100 different ones now.
i hope some of you will test this and provide feedback.
PS, program is coded in autoit, which some old AV's tend to flag, i'll offer admins a look at the source code if needed.
PS2, Only supports CWM type roms.
Greetz,
Damian

I'm assuming course that it would course invalidate md5 checksum, and as a result there's no real assurance that the zip had been repacked correctly prior to flashing.
no, it wont pass that test, but seeying its a regular zipfile, you can always test the zip itself.

True. What about the repacking of system.img ?
this basicly only works on the CWM based roms, which are zipfiles, so i dont touch those

Ahh. Hrm odd I don't recall ever actually using a CWM based rom, every rom I've tried after CM7.2 have been mostly ICS roms, and every i've ever unpacked have had each of the partitions saved as img files.
yes that is weird, every rom i use can be flashed by cwm, and when unpacked, only bootimage is a img file, rest is folders and files.
Interesting idea, cool. So far, I've been deleting manually files from the zips. One suggestion, could you add someday ability to add programs into the selected ROM?
Or even better, enable user to create batch package/batch deletion of his apks/always-deleted-apks that could be added/removed with a single click to/from every consecutive ROM ? Just a loose idea.. Thanks!

you can allready do that, just place the apk's in the files/add folder' it allready has system and data in there, just make a apps folder and drop them in
good idea, ill let program save removal settings on exit, so it can load them when it starts

I'm afraid I don't follow. Drag and dropp doesn't work in any case. I tried dnd on apks, zips with structured folders or folders alone. Give me a tip
chech the program folder, in the files/add folder, are 2 more folders, data and system.
if you make an app folder in there, and drop your apk's in there, they will be pushed to your rom
example, 'files/add/system/app/MyTestApk.apk'

Ok, thanks for the advice! I assume that it won't push apks that aren't supported in removal? I'm talking specifically about Cerberus.apk - it is very advantegous to integrate the app with a ROM.

thats totally unrelated, any file you place there gets pushed, any file.
Come to think of it, I might actually be thinking bout backups I do recall a lot of roms do have the folders set where they're migrated to the existing filesystem.
true, CWM backups are img files
Very nice idea for a program. Is it limited to only roms for our device or literally any CWM flashable zips?
it works on all actually, but i only have HTC phones, so others arent much supported in the apk department, simply because i cant check them

"People" is the display name of contacts - there is no people.apk.
If you use Google to store your contacts, then you'll need Google contact sync. If you have a Google account, then you need Google account manager. But I'm guessing that that it's already installed or you wouldn't be able to access Play store.
TB does not backup system apps, only their data. You will need to manually copy the contact apks. Then, on your ROM where you don't have people, copy the apks to /system/data, boot into recovery and wipe cache and Dalvik, and reboot. You should have people back again.

[HOW TO] Fix Dropbox on Android L Developer Preview

HOW-TO FIX DROPBOX on ANDROID L DEVELOPER PREVIEW
This method worked for me, so hopefully it'll do the same for you as well.
1. Download Root Explorer from the Play Store.
2. In Root Explorer navigate to:
Code:
sdcard/Android/data/
3. Delete the com.dropbox.android folder.
4. Next go to your device's root directory (/) and go to:
Code:
/data/system/
5. Delete the dropbox folder.
Just for safe keeping I booted into recovery and to wipe dalvik and cache, rebooted, reinstalled Dropbox and it's been working smoothly ever since.

and work fine...Please do not update the app from PlayStore!!!!!
Deleting /data/system/dropbox fixed it for me. Thanks!
Edit: actually it's force closing again. It did work once though
I'm on a Nexus 7 2013 with Android L and so far none of these solutions have worked The dropbox team really just needs to update their app.

Please reup this apk.
I tried the method in the OP a few times, but it didnt seem to work at first. Then I used QuickPic to upload some photos to dropbox, which worked like a charm. Now for some reason I am able to directly use the dropbox app itself with no problems. Not sure exactly what fixed it though. Kind of weird.

Accepted. It works
Sadly this tutorial didn't work for me.
Still gettin force close every time.
I tried QuickPic and i can access Dropbox with it, but even after that the normal app still crashes
Start QuickPic, send file and then run Dropbox. QuickPic let the background.
Doesn't work either..

I tried this... didn't work It's weird because it had worked once and now it doesn't, I wonder why.
not work on everytime, that wired
for now
i use solid explorer to access my dropbox files
None of the methods above worked for me. So I restored an old Dropbox apk from a backup and it works very well.

I was finding the same, nothing was working to get it fixed, but I could still access files in dropbox from other apps like ES File Explorer. However I really wanted the camera upload feature. I installed this old apk and it appears to be working, but I haven't tested to see if the camera upload is working. Hopefully it is... Thanks for sharing the apk.
