Unkown device - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

My Nexus 7 is not fully recognised with usb so i cannot make transfer anymore.
In recovery mode and fastoot mode, drivers are ok
i'm in developper mode and usb debug is on
I try to select MTP or PTP and nothing new
I get unkown device in device manager but cannot make any driver update as it always told me that this is the last driver (I try naked driver and asus driver) and this happen even if I delete the unkown driver.

Any hep will be welcome!

I confirm that my usb issue is solved.
After a factory reset, i reinstall the last release Usb ROM and USB comes back to life on my nexus.
The nexus is no more recognized as unkown device by my computer and i can install the adb driver.
During this story, i try also to get acces via wifi but was unable to connect even with adb over wifi enable on the nexus.
My problem seems to be due to corrupt data that block every connections between the computer and the nexus (adb wifi and usb) based on last 4.2.2 new safety features.
So far i recommand full wipe between two rom install to avoid such trouble.

If your nexus is rooted, go in recovery mode and install a new rom from zip.
How to ?
Download rom of your choice via wifi
You can download a rom directly from your nexus to sd.
Check here for download (example)
http://mehrvarz.github.com/nexus-7-usbrom/
Download Google applications on your nexus via wifi
Download from here : http://donandroid.com/gapps
Before installing new rom make a save using titanium backup.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.keramidas.TitaniumBackup&hl=fr
Save all your application and data in batch mode.
Create titanium.zip on your nexus 7 sd.
Then from recovery mode make a full wipe but without erasing sd data.
Follow these instructions :
Unless you format the system partition and system caches, you aint wiped nothing, there is only one way to carry out a proper full wipe, and thats the full wipe the correct way.
1. Boot into recovery
2. Wipe the cache partition
3. Go to advanced and wipe dalvik and batt stats.
4. Go back to mounts and storage and format system, then data, then cache.
5. Go back and install the rom zip file from the sd card.
6. Reboot.
No need to wipe data/factory reset, the contents of your internal and external sd cards are untouched.
From Recovery mode
- install titanium.zip.
- install gapps.zip
Reboot
Go to titanium backup and recover all your data.
Et voila...

Forgot pattern and cannot recover- nexus 4 with android 5+ lollipop

Hello.
I've repaired a nexus 4 screen and digitizer but I got it back because my friend can't recover access from a forgotten pattern lock.
He is running stock android 5 lollipop and he doesn't get the email recovery option when he inputs wrong pattern. I've searched even in google support but I didn't find a solution to recover his photos.
My main concern is to recover files and photos!!! There isn't a reason to suggest a factory reset....
--Phone Status---
Boot loader seems unlocked "Locked state is marked as unlocked in bootloder in red letters" while secure boot is enabled in green letters
USB debugging seems OFF: There is no android device listed in device manager. I only get a music player in disk drives which is empty.
adb devices command in bootloader recognises it
When entering to recovery I get the message "no command" along with the icon of an android under repair.
No dropbox no google+ photos backup
---What I've tried---
UPDATE: Managed to flash TWRP 2.7.1.0 I can see the files but since usb flash drive doesn't work I can't copy the files...
Android Device manager: Returns error that the phone is already locked and there is no need to apply new password.
Tried about 30 wrong patterns and it didn't came up the google mail recovery option.
Tried during a phone call to see the files but I only managed to turn on WiFi.

When you say the USB flash drive doesn't work, do you mean the USB port in the phone?
MTP doesn't always work in TWRP, meaning it won't show up as a normal usb drive on a pc. ADB will still work though, you have to set up ADB on your computer, boot into twrp on the phone and use 'adb pull' to copy the files to the computer. On windows you will need to download adb and the drivers, I use http://www.koushikdutta.com/post/universal-adb-driver
I'm trying to install the drivers for adb but I cannot find the right one.
Edit: Also it cannot be detected from boot loader now. I'll try in a pc that already has been connected and worked.
I have adb and fastboot installed already and worked with this and my own phones.
Edit: It seems to be a lost cause the phone fell down many times. Don't bother maybe I'll solder a usb port first... if it is possible with my less than basic equipment.
There are many methods on the following page,
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2620456
The way I did it was an alternative version of method 5 while in twrp.
Method 5 - alternatively, Mount system in twrp and delete the file /data/system/gesture.key
If it asks for a pattern on boot just try any random pattern it should let you in. I did this when a version before lollipop was installed but there is no reason it shouldn't work on lollipop as the same file is saved in the same location, just checked.
Using adb
adb shell rm /data/system/gesture.key

[TUTORIAL][WINDOWS]Solution: File Transfer in TWRP Recovery[17-08-2015]

Tutorial: How to transfer files to/from our Moto G while in TWRP recovery
This tutorial have been tested in 7, 8, 8.1 and 10 Windows versions. It can work with other devices beside Moto G.

Sometimes we need to transfer files to our device while we are in recovery mode. When we forget to copy the zip we were going to flash, when we are installing a
GPE based ROM (we must format /data and erase all files), to transfer a backup... ect. In many cases we need this function.
The purpose of this tutorial is to make our PC succesfully recognize our Moto G as a storage device being in TWRP recovery.
Many users have reported that their devices are not being recognized.
Requirements:
-Have installe the last TWRP recovery version.
-Have installed ADB drivers in PC. You can try this ones Universal ADB Drivers or Motorola Mobile Drivers 64 bits
-USB data cable.
-PC runnig Windows 7, 8, 8.1 or 10 (can work with older versions).Steps: Sorry for spanish images, if you can provide me english captures would be great.
1) Boot into recovery mode and connect to PC with USB data cable.
2) Being completely sure your device is not being recognized, otherwise this tutorial will be totally useless to you.
3) Open Control Panel and click on Hardware and Sound
4) Go to Device Manager.
5) Look for 'Android Device' or 'Android Phone' or any related name, open the list, rigth-click on the device and click on 'Update driver software'.
6) Now click on the second option.
7) Now click on the option below:
8) Make sure 'ADB composite device' is there and click next.
9) Once this is donde, reboot your PC and it will be in capacity to recognize your device as a storage device while you are in TWRP recovery. We can freely transfer files.---------------------------------------------------

[HELP] Cannot move or create anything on Internal Storage

Hello! Here is everything i did to get to this point:
• Unlocked the bootloader
• Installed TWRP
• Took nandroid backup
• Wiped everything (excluding USB-OTG)
• Tried to move files to the phone, and it created a no-name file with the windows drive icon
• Tried to delete the file, couldn't.
• Disconnected from PC, tried to wipe Internal Storage again, said " Error opening: '/data/media' (No such file or directory) "
{
"lightbox_close": "Close",
"lightbox_next": "Next",
"lightbox_previous": "Previous",
"lightbox_error": "The requested content cannot be loaded. Please try again later.",

"lightbox_download": "Download",
"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
And it still continues to say "Error opening: '/data/media' (No such file or directory)" every time i try to wipe the Internal Storage, doesn't matter if MTP enabled/disabled or if connected to PC or not.
So now i cannot move any files or folders to the phone, when i try, it does nothing.
When i try to create a directory on the phone, just says this (see image below) or hangs Windows Explorer.
I did all of this following this guide: https://forum.xda-developers.com/oneplus-5/how-to/oneplus-5-unlock-bootloader-flash-twrp-t3624877
TWRP IMG used: Bluspark TWRP
I did NOT flash supersu or magisk, because i was going to install ResurrectionRemix ROM on the phone after all this. Also i did not reboot to OOS after installing TWRP, just wiped everything and i cannot move anything to the memory now.
[EDIT] When i go to Wipe>Advanced Wipe>Select Internal Storage>Click Repair or Change File System it says "Invalid partition selection"
What should i do? I hope i didn't somehow brick my brand new phone :crying:
did you try flash TWRP recovery "again" via fastboot? so restart phone in fastboot mode> flash recovery via ADB (or just copy TWRP recovery.img to your excisting TWRP and flash again as "recovery">reboot) You should than have a clean recovery. Than wipe everything also (incl. format data.) Than reboot in recovery and copy ROM file, Gapps, Magisk etc..etc.. from pc and start from a clean "scratch"
Edit: i had this kind of issue also while flashing unofficial Oreo LOS build. I ****ed it up also. Keep in mind as long as your PC reconize your device you are totally NOT bricked. So don't worry!!!
I solved it myself somehow...
Sorry about this whole post, i just somehow got this working when i tried to sideload an img file (ik, i'm a genious) it said "corrupted zip file" and now i can see everything again on the Internal Storage... wow.. How do i close a thread now?
Glad it worked out!
I think only a Forum Moderator can close threads.
Oh, ok. Do i need to contact one or do something so they can remove/close the thread? Thanks for the fast response anyways!

Mwah, no need. Mostly they keep the threads "open" so that other users with "similar" issues can learn or reply in your thread for help.
Ok. This just made no sense to me. Ty

Transfer NANDROID Backup from broken D5803 Device to another intact D5803 Device

Hi, I used TWRP to create the following NANDROID Backup:
{
"lightbox_close": "Close",
"lightbox_next": "Next",
"lightbox_previous": "Previous",
"lightbox_error": "The requested content cannot be loaded. Please try again later.",
"lightbox_start_slideshow": "Start slideshow",
"lightbox_stop_slideshow": "Stop slideshow",

"lightbox_download": "Download",
"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
The backup source phone ( D5803_No1 ) has a touchscreen that does not work anymore.
I have another z3c phone ( lets call it D5803_No2 ) with a partially broken touchscreen and an intact z3c ( D5803_No3 ).
I used the same software stack to install a rootable stock 5.1.1 ROM, root and install TWRP on device D5803_No1, D5803_No2 and D5803_No3 ( the fully intact one )
That means all on all 3 Phones:
I used flashtool-0.9.20.0-windows.exe to flash D5803_23.4.A.1.264_1289-4696_R8C.ftf ( which was a modified 5.1.1 ROM that I could root with giefroot_v3.1 ) and then install XZDualRecovery.
Phone D5803_No1 was the one I used on a daily basis before the touchscreen broke.
Now I tried the following:
Restore a fully NANDROID Backup ( as seen in the screenshot above ) that I created with my broken daily use Phone D5803_No1 to the blank rooted D5803_No2.
I did not wipe anything on D5803_No2 before and I checked to restore all 5 Paritions that I backed up.
To recover a backup from a foreign device I had also to do the following step TWRP recovery doesn't show the backup file. Problem with restoring nandroid.
When it came to the /data partition I got an error in TWRP ( I think something like "cannot wipe /data" but not sure anymore ) and my only option was to reboot the phone.
Now it is bricked, not discovered by flashtool anymore.
I read here that you will hard brick your device if you try to flash the TA from one device to another ( what I tired to do ).
My question is:
1. Has anybody any experience with transferring a NANDROID Backup from one phone to another ( same model of course )
2.
If there is not the answer "it is definitely not possible to transfer a backup to another phone"
Which partitions should I try to recover from D5803_No1 to D5803_No3 ( the fully intact one ) to minimize the chance of a ( soft/hard) brick ? Should I wipe some partitions before recovering ?
Yes, flashing a TA backup from another Z3c will hard-brick the phone.
You could try to restore only the data partition on your 3rd z3c and wipe cache + dalvik. From what I read on the forums it should work and boot, but it is very likely that the camera won't work because of some device-specific DRM settings that are stored on the data partition. So actually this isn't recommendable either.
I would advise you to get a USB OTG cable to connect a PC mouse to your 1st z3c and then take a Titanium Backup of all your apps and settings. After this, restore everything you need on your 3rd Z3c.
Good luck! :fingers-crossed:
