Battery drain even in deep sleep - Nexus 10 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello folks,
I'm facing a battery drain problem when the Tablet is idle. In the last week i managed to get >11h Screen on Time and awesome idle battery stats. But now my battery drains even if the device is in Deepsleep with Wlan on and Synch on (>97%) about 1-2% per hour. [With Gnow off, Bluetooth / GPS / NFC off). The curios thing is, it happens with all Roms I tested so far, when I'm replacing the stock kernel of the rom with the ktmanta Kernel.
Can you guys give me an advice ? If there were wakelocks which wake the Device i would know what to do, but with Deepsleep > 97% ? The only Wakelocks are gmail and google account synch.
I would be thankful for every Hint.
Best regards

This most likely and issue with the kernel. If your kernel supports underclocking you should consider doing that because underclocking uses less battery. With all that stuff off and ONLY wifi on, during sleep you should not lose more than a percent every couple of hours. I have kept mine stock but im well aware that most battery issues are relating the kernel. I have a nexus 4 and Gnex before that both rooted and used to run AOKP before but not CM 10.1. So I have seen enough battery issues to kno that this completely because of the kernel.

AW: Battery drain even in deep sleep
Okay, I'm aware that it has something to do with the custom kernel. But the weird thing is, that all was good and then suddenly after 3-4 cycles my N10 started to lose battery in Deepsleep. There wasn't any change in the rom / kernel or settings. If tried several Roms / kernels but only get rid of it, when I stick to cm stock kernel.
Atm I'm on the actual ktmanta underclocked @ 200-1400mhz + undervolted

If it is happening with every custom rom you have tried so far then maybe it is time you try a new kernel. Also, this might not be it but just to be on the safe side, check what apps you have running in the background. Might help.

Battery life on custom roms

Hey guys im keen to know your experiences with the various custom roms out there.. I have flashed villianrom today as my first custom along with various kernals but have had constant drain issues..
Looking at my battery awake stats it seems as if it never sleeps :-(

Screenshots showing battery usage and more importantly screen on time.
I don't have Villian ROM but from reading the comments on thst thread this is one of the best as regards battery drain so im amazed you experience high drain.
I run Cognition and am happy with this.

You can see it just gettin eaten away screen off doesnt stop drain note the awake vs.screentime i have tried 4 kernals to no avail

Put on watchdog and let it run in the back ground and see if it's any app or widget misbehaving.
Thanks trying now

Just read in another thread that having motion sensor enabled causes this.
In my case ... Absolutely confirmed!
Very weird

I was on Villain too,1.4 to be exact...drains as well, now on Litening 2.2,after resetting batt stats, best so far screen on time almost 5 hours, using mostly wifi..but with 3G,I get around 4hr 30mins...I usually leave my wifi on all the time at home, and switch on data only when I leave...
literom 2.2 doubled my battery life (no exageration) coming from stock rom. impressive.

Some extended idling:
Cognition 1.13 with CF KG1 Kernel, Phone undervolted as in screenshot + GPU @ 750mV for both states.
Android OS still taking 1h15m CPU time in that screenshot, which, in my experience in this case is I *think* because of Skype running all the time there. Also Trillian connected to multiple services running constantly with Wifi.
I'm using Cognition 1.15 with modified 1.4 ninmphetamine kernel, very good battery life so far! (probably the best compared to villainrom and litening rom for me)
Having fixed my awake issue my battery life is reasonable but i expected betted with villainrom + nenphetamine custom + undervolt.
We need to guage some good comparisons id like to get an extended idle test dont know if i can leave my phone for that long. LOL
Btw How did you undervolt gpu?
Sent from my GT-I9100 using Tapatalk
I would stay away from these newer kernels like Nephetamine until they actually mature. I alslo tried some other custom kernels and they kinda drained the battery way more. So I'm sticking to a plain kernel like CF for the moment. Also seems better to stick to the normal ondemand governor.
Undervolting GPU via Tegrak Ultimate, it's worth it imho, especially since I basically shaved off 25% voltage without any issues.

How many hours are you getting if 4:30 and 5 hours screen display on time is poor performance? Please enlighten me...
I too flashed Villain rom (KF2) 2 days back and after flashing I get more battery drain compared to KF2 stock rom. android os is consuming 60% of battery.
BTW How can i see that graph thats shown above? is there any app for that

Starburst ROM + Pershoot's 1.4ghz Kernel Stats

Hello, Just thought I would post my stats using the new Starburst rom with Pershoot's Kernel. Getting great speed and the system runs very smooth but it feels like my battery is draining quite abit faster...
I have setcpu set as "OnDemand" 300mhz-1400, 256mhz when screen is off. Is this battery drain normal? Ran for 4 hours idle while working, then during break i used my tablet for about 15 min, idle another 4 hours and then after work I only got about 2 1/2 hours of use from my tablet before getting the 15% battery warning (79% to 15% in two and a half hours).
Before installing any TW rom and using Pershoot's older (non-TW) kernel with same settings I was getting atleast 4 hours after having the system idle all day while i work (10 hrs), this was with about 40%+ battery left to spare. Please take a look at my stats and feel free to give any suggestions to help me get more battery
The performance now is very good, but before TW i was getting about 150 less points in quadrant (2950ish)with the extra battery life. Also i dont let any apps run wild while idle and have gps, bluetooth, wifi turned off during working hours.
Quadrant Score, Starburst TW + Pershoot's Kernel Aug/9/2011 builds (score:3100).

Battery Stats, notice the steep drop at the end? Thats the only time I really used my tablet... about 2 1/2 hours, web surfing (14 hours 35min total on battery).

why is your screen on and awake bar completely full if you only used it for the last 2:30?
In GENERAL
Screen on time 8-10 hours
Standby time ~100-500 hours depending on whats on/apps installed.
No idea why it says the screen was on, it was not... And I had the unit on but as far as i know there isn't a sleep option so the unit was awake but not being used.
If you know of a sleep option please let me know, thanks for your reply
Yeah I'm still testing this exact rom/kernel combo and there is something up with it.
On a reboot, does the battery level go up? Does it stay up for a little while then drop back down?
Also have you done a battery calibration? If so, how?
I'm just trying to narrow down what could be causing the problem. I'm no dev by any stretch of the imagination, but for some reason I really want to find out what is causing this. It doesnt seem to affect all machines so in finding the simularities of those that are having this issue, we can squash this bug....
I was using this combo and my google music kept force closing.

it should goto sleep automatically, and if screen was off it should be indicated as off. maybe something is wrong. im currently on pershoot's kernel as well and have had some issues with battery calibration (reporting bogus stats).
i think pershoot is looking into the issues on his thread.
im using 10.1-Wifi, Touchwiz UX (OTA, GT-P7510)
It's a kernel problem. Try going back to stock or an older version of pershoots.
It'll be fixed today from what I've read.
Late last night reinstalled Starburst with its original rom, after my 10 hour work day it still has 95% battery left (after some galaxy on fire 2 during my break), hella lot better than it was yesterday.
I will wait for Pershoot's revised kernel and test it out again. And thanks again for all the devs making custom roms and kernels! Much love to ya! <3
*Stock Starburst kernel is showing my screen being off (when it is off) and my system as not awake when screen is off under battery usage in settings

From what I've read, he claims there is no problem with the kernel, the problem is with the user. We havent calibrated the battery correctly according to pershoot himself. Problem is, I cant figure out the secret to a correct calibration process....

Flash Starburst or stock rom then charge your tablet 100%, once your battery is fully charged flash Pershoot's kernel.
I have not tried this myself but from what I have read it works, right now im happy with the performance on stock Starburst kernel, quadrant is at 2300 compared to Pershoot's 3100 but its running so smooth I cannot notice the difference. Going to wait for Pershoot's reworked kernel and then flash it, I gots to have my voodoo!
Update:
Today I reset my battery, and installed Pershoot's kernel. I'm still getting battery drain, used for 5 min this morning and its down to 80% (just browsing web)... Also my clock got stuck at around 5:08am and my alarm did not work this morning until i turned my screen on. After I installed Pershoots kernel alot of apps were acting up and not running properly but after a reboot my clock and apps started working as normal.
And I have to hit/hold the power button like 5 times to turn on the unit now. Going back to original Starburst for now.

Darn. I was just about to give this a try. Oh well I'll try it anyways, nothing to lose. Just remember all the issues that may or may not be caused by the kernel is actually user error

I'm using it now & it's a very good finish product. His last version gave me battery issues like no other. I believe he withdrew it after numerous complaints over battery issues.
Working great.
I always wipe Dalvik and Cache before flashing the new kernel.

1% battery drainage time if only screens on and everything is off
And if everything is on?
Both plx
And total time if continously. Use

I've noticed my latest flash to onecosmic's RC4 was still battery hungry, but some tweaking with SetCPU and using NovaLauncher, as well as a proper modem for my area seem to have it straightened out again.
Does it tell you if the screen is using more than the cpu or not?
possible live wallpappers?

It crashed while I was watching videos in h/w mode then down hill from there. 100% gone in 5 hours. I have a feeling the GPU has blown??? Might try another rom.
Using Docs master rom???
Any ideas
Hi there,
Firstly, I would ensure we rule out a hardware issue by flashing a completely stock firmware using ODIN. It would be best if you remove your external SD card, and backup all your data on your internal memory and then wipe as much as you can as well. After flashing a stock firmware, see if there is a battery drain still, and if so you will at least have more evidence to suggest there is a hardware issue.
CPU Spy is an excellent app for discovering issues whereby the CPU is being utilised too much - additionally, System Panel is also excellent. However, again neither of these will be able to determine if there is a hardware issue of some sort, only excessive CPU usage.
WRT EFS backup, my preferred method it to use Root Explorer and create an archive whilst in the EFS directory. It will put the archive on your SD card - and it takes no time at all.
Some of the apps I mentioned will be charged for I guess, but not very much.
If you need more details, let me know.
:-( my battery was perfect. I installed onecosmic and it was fine battery was normal after few days my battery started draining fast 1% every 3 minutes and I flashed Miui mintberry rom and still problem exist. Even wifi off and background data off and edge too it drains 1% 3-5 minutes while screen is off or deep sleep it drain 1% evey hour
Last night I flashed back to stock rom 2.3.4 and rooted and installed Miui mintberry rom again still problem exist
What should I do :-( plx help

ok.
You need to examine this problem to narrow down the cause. You will have to invest some time and possibly a little money to achieve that! If all else fails, you can of course buy a new battery - but it's best to work out where the drain is coming from.
Have you checked the battery log in Android settings?
Also consider installing OS Monitor, it is free and allows you to look at what processes are running.

That's quite some drain!
It's important to get the right tool for the job here and the apps you are using aren't detailed enough unfortunately.
System Panel will inspect android system apps to check where CPU usage is and log it making it very easy to determine what is happneing.
BetterbatteryStats will allow you to check on the WakeLocks which are a big cause of battery drain when the screen is off.
I use them both - but must say I haven't see such fast battery drain as yours.
Throughout this process, I suggest you stick to a ROM as close to stock as possible but prefereably with CWM.
OK I installed os monitor

ok; excellent.
If you need help turning on the "monitor" mode of system panel let me know. Otherwise just turn it on and then use your phone normally for a while (i.e. allow time for it to be left with screen off as well) after that stats will be collected to show how the CPU has been used over that time.
Also check CPU Spy and make sure that the CPU isn't "stuck" in 1000Mhz

How to fix battery drain issue !

Hi I keep hearing people complaining about their battery draining, but I found turning off and on some features does infact stop the battery from draining too much, but this only works with the latest 4.4.2 update because I noticed that Power saving mode was not working on 4.3. You should set your setting like this:
The final step is to set you screen brightness to 25% (Brightness level by Curvefish) and turn off your wifi.

[Q] How to use ROMS/Kernels for Battery life

I just bought an unlocked Samsung Galaxy S5. It's pretty nice and all except the battery life is terrible. I tired to do it by turning things off, but then I was just left with a boring that can't even do anything. What's the point of all it's cools stuff if you have to turn it all off just to keep it alive? I heard that after rooting a phone one can download custom ROMS to improve Battery life. My problem is I don't have a single clue on how to use them. I've tried Omega, Waman, Alliance, Cyanogen and others but I don't know how to use any of them for battery life.
Is there some sort of tutorial for using them? Or anything at all that could point me in the right direction? I'm so confused I think I'd rather just buy and extended battery.
How long does your battery last? Maybe your expectations are unrealistic
I recommend you to flash an AOSP based ROM and install Greenify. Maybe you should also flash a custom kernel for tweaking your CPU.
Furthermore you could buy a new battery
