adb not working properly - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

ok, long story short...adb is showing device but its offline.
i have a Rezound, Galaxy Nexus, and Droid DNA and adb works fine. I've tried different cables and different usb ports.
Weird part...........
if I reboot into bootloader, fastboot works fine. and if Im in recovery, adb works fine.
See picture.
Any ideas? Thanks in advance!

AW: adb not working properly
It's a new security feature and there are already several threads about that topic. Normally on your tablet a popup message should be shown asking you whether you want to allow your PC to access.

i got it! i'm not even sure what I did but the damn message finally came up.
i think the trick is....even if your ADB is in your PATH...you gotta cd/sdk/platform-tools and then use ./adb instead of just adb

Kindle Fire HD ADB Drivers

Here's the Amazon-provided Kindle Fire HD drivers. This is for anyone having problems finding them. It helped me at least sideload a few apps on this Fire HD. I'm not sure if you can find them anywhere other than using the Android SDK Manager. I figured I'd just make it easier for those who don't have the traditional SDK setup.
You can turn on ADB in Settings>Security>Enable ADB
Attached is the installer from the Amazon repository found using these instructions.

Perfect. Thanks for this. It was the one piece I was missing. Now my ADB connection works

Now we just need to find a way to root the damn thing.
This is true.
I'm no developer so all I can do is try methods that already exist. I'd rather not jump off of any cliffs with this HD yet until I can fix my screw-ups.

I was thinking the same thing, but dont want to brick it. I just got flash, you tube, Dolphin, and Netflix working perfect. I love the screen on this thing. Only one thing left to make it perfect. Rooting, then full gapps!!!
Thank you. Another alternative is to load apks to box.com and install from there.

Is there a way to turn off the extra panes in the gmail app on the N7 ?

I somehow don't feel the need to see an extra pane showing me labels and all. On top of that I think it's killing the precious space. I just like the plain jane look with just the email list or the email details.
Is there a way to turn off the panels ? I would want to get the same look as what I had in my NOTE.
Can't believe that no one replied here.

Use other apps???
I have the same question as u.....can't fix that, I just took it...

Its because of the phablet UI, the app is the same on both devices so sideloading won't do a thing

Sideloading will not work. The version on my Nook is not compatible with the Nexus. Also... on the Nexus Gmail is a system app.

Flash Paranoidandroid. You can change whether it shows in phone mode or tablet mode.

" you are now a developer". Has this always happened with nexus devices????

So while goofing around with my phone tonight... I tapped the 4.2 several times to show the jelly bean, nerdy I know... But I then taped the build number several times on the bottom and it have me a tap countdown until the message " you are now a developer" displayed? I didn't know anything about that and again it may be normal but if anyone could comment or if anyone knows does it do anything software wise to my phone?

Its in 4.2.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I747 using xda premium
It is another change in Jellybean 4.2. It is made so that n00bs don't go into the developer settings and mess up anything. I think it is a great job done by Google to add that.
Thanks for the replies... I hadn't read anything about it yet.

It's only in a couple hundred threads as you need to get into the developer options to enable USB debugging in order to root and mod the phone. You can't use adb or fastboot till you enable usb debugging. Jelly Bean is the first version of Android where the developer options are hidden.

What is this file being created?

Hey guys been looking for an answer but only found a thread on evo 3d forums that doesn't have much activity, anyways I keep getting this file created every hour or so and its really starting to scare me maybe spyware or something. Trying to figure out why and where its coming from. Also attached inside contents.

I found that in my phone the other day too. I don't know what it is, but it doesn't really do anything.
Could be a log file. I'm not sure what it is. I would scan again once it appears. Not sure if it is I needed file or not. I don't have a nex 4 but was looking into getting one that's why I'm at the forum.
You can try sd maid which has a system cleaner. Or change the files permissions if you are worried about it transmitting data. But I wouldn't mess with it too much until you figure out what it is.

You guys could wipe your sdcard with twrp if you are worried, but back up all your wanted sdcard data to a computer first. And then put it back on right after. I do that with my Nexus 7 sometime. Not sure if it is the same process on Nex4. It may not be necessary, not sure.

I have removed the apps I have installed on my Device from the above list, The first one that springs to mind is the go backup. I would check there first.

The Kit kat OTA ADB Sideload success thread.

I've seen several threads of people either complaining where the OTA is, asking if anybody had gotten it, or asking those that have received it, to stand up and say so.
Quite frankly I'm immensely perplexed. :what::what::what:
You have at your fingertips the two greatest sources of techy knowledge mankind has ever known.
XDA and Google.
I gladly boast, yes I didn't care to wait and ADB sideloaded the 4.4 OTA zip.
Yes, I ran into issues, but I dug my heels, put my nose to the grindstone, and did some serious XDA'ing and Google'ing and figured it out. And, no data was lost, all data was preserved! After installing GEL with the latest Google search apk, couldn't be happier!
All those impatient souls that took things into there own hands. Let the world know, yes I choose not to wait for Google to give me a hand out, and ADB sideloaded that bad boy!!!:beer:

You don't understand.... It's a new feature in Android. You have to download and find the way to install the update yourself.
I'm sure it will make Android more popular and attractive than Apple.

It wasn't android that was the issue. All the software I got from Google worked as it should. It was my windows 8.1 PC that was giving me headaches. And it didn't take that long, hour at most. I to, don't have much time to spare.

It takes less time to sideload the OTA manually than it does to spam check for the update and spam post complaints about not receiving it yet. It's very simple. I don't know why there are so many complicated guides.
Here's my guide:
adb sideload filename.zip
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk 4

Side note: this only works if you're using the OTA. Only slightly more tricky -- flashing the factory image.

done thanks
If you are stock, locked, and un-rooted you can sideload the OTA update and not lose a single thing.
The longest part of the process is downloading and installing the android SDK (if you don't already have it), which really isn't bad at all with an average broadband connection.
I already had the SDK loaded, so it took me about 20 minutes start to finish to do the 4.4 update (and that includes the time needed to download the 185MB ota file).

You don't need to full SDK to do sideloading.
You only need the platform tools, in particular, 3 files from the platform tools totalling around 954kb
No idea why, but of the 3 nexus 7 I maintain (2 for my kids + a friends) 2 of them got the update, one didn't. Downloaded update, applied via sideload, all is right in the world.... (except the digitizer on my friends... it's a hot mess.)

I didn't want nor need to install the full SDK, but when I tried out ATGAdmin's one-click restore I wound up with a few files that seem to have worked for me since then. I just wanted to know what 3 files they might be.
I've got:
fastboot.exe
adb.exe
adbwinapi.dll
adbwinusbapi.dll
Are any of these the ones you are referring to?
Thanks in advance
You'll need correct drivers as well. Commands I used follow:
adb devices
(verify that device shows up)
adb reboot bootloader
This boots you into bootloader. Then choose recovery.
Wait for android w ! mark on him. Hit Power+VolUp together
Use menu to choose something like "Apply update from adb"
then
adb sideload <filename.zip>
Note, this is what I did. I have full sdk installed.
