This has been bugging me and I can't seem to find anything on here to explain it.
I have installed custom ROMs on my N7. Problem is most ROM instructions say to do a full wipe/factory reset. When I do that, the downloaded ROM that was sitting on the SDCard gets wiped out as well.
I then have to go back and search for info on how to reset/restore the N7 and start all over, because the recovery (both CWM and TeamWin) don't let me mount the SD card to copy the needed zip over.
How can I do the recommended data wipe without losing the sd card contents?
Failing that, what's easiest way to get the ROM zip back on the N7 when the recovery won't allow it?

dont wipe data...
just do a 'factory reset' in custom recovery...then flash a rom
I use TWRP & don't wipe everything, just System & Factory (to delete installed apps).
This is after wiping Cache & Dalvik Cache.
Unless I'm missing something a data wipe will wipe everything except recovery.
I don't think we have the option to exempt the media folder like on other devices.

I appreciate the suggestions, and I've done the factory wipe. It wiped out the /SDcard folder contents where the zips were.
How do I get zips back on the N7? tried ADB, tried sideload from TWRP, nothing works.
Having many more problems than the last time I did this.

factory reset in TWRP doesnt touch /data/media
are you sure you are on the most recent version of recovery?
updated to latest recovery version, that seemed to be my issue. sd card now untouched.

Pirateghost speaks the truth.
The stock recovery however, wipes everything with it's "factory reset".
It's a little bit unfortunate that the identical terminology is used. No doubt new folks will occasionally get bit by assuming they are the same.
I haven't used cwm yet; not sure what it means by "factory reset" - or even if it uses that terminology.

Hello, I have recently been unable to flash ROM's succesfully.
I have Clockwork MOD 4.0.0.2 installed as it came with CF-Root, and I am on stock 2.3.5 KI3.
I have tried flashing several roms, and while it says install complete, whenever it restarts, it is on a boot loop, where it won't go past the Galaxy S II bit with the yellow triangle, I have to flash the stock rom again using odin to even use the phone, I have tried to flash other recovery versions, like 4.0.0.14 and 5.1.2.6 (I think it is) but they all come up with errors mounting or getting recovery.log or something, could you please help?
Did you try to do a full wipe?
Most issues can be resolved by this.
In the CWM menu chose the factory reset/full wipe. (Don't worry it won't touch your files on the internal SD card)
Do a cache wipe and in the advanced menu do a dalvik cache wipe.
Some recommend to do this procedure twice, but you should be settled with doing it once

Yeah I did all that, didn't help, the progress bar gets half way and says complete :S I have downloaded the ROMs several times aswell incase they were corrupt, still didn't help.
Take out the battery, wait a bit, put it back in. Do all the wipe and formatting procedures (perhaps twice) and format the internal sd card as well and wipe the battery stats (just to be sure)

Hi everyone, I recently rooted my 16GB WE TPT and installed cm10 v.0.8.1 and I love the performance and everything, if only there were no reboots. After reading in this forum I wanted to try to reinstall things from scratch wiping everything. For some reason I don't seem to be able to to anything with the data that is on my TPT. Neither can I do a factory reset from settings nor can I wipe data from Recovery. It doesn't display an error but it just doesn't delete anything. Then I tried to restore my backup from my original rom but this doesn't work either: it says error while restoring data (after recovery and system).
Can anyone help me? Could I have accidentally locked the data or anything?
Btw, Google Play has stopped working after my last try to restore stock and then install cm10 again.
In cwm you find under advanced a setting called "fix permissions". Try that

Hi, i had big problems with my Data-Partition. The Partition was read-only. No wipe with CWM was possible. Is that the same problem what you have? Do you have an logcat? Any error-messages?
Wiping was only possible with adb...

I don't have the same error messages you have/had, but I could image that my data partition is also read only since I can neither delete or install anything. What did you do to get rid of that problem?
The solution was to completely format the data permission. This can't be done in CWM directly because CWM tries to keep the folder /data/media, which is your internal sd-card and only deletes the other files (That's obviously not formating). In the link you can find a zip files that you can "flash" in CWM, it will format the data partition and does nothing else. After using it you should also manually wipe the cache using CWM.
Like i said, this will include your internal sdcard! Make backups first if you have important data stored on it!

I need to clear it - if I do "wipe data/factory reset" in stock ICS recovery menu - will it cause deleting ROM (and reboot will make brick) OR just will get it back to clean factory ROM?
I found few threads here about "wipe data"-thing, but it seems to me, that every version of Android / custom ROM / recovery type could behave different.
I have flashed many a Rom in my day, but the Nexus 7 is a unique beast. How do you flash a ROM and how do you go about erasing the internal storage without losing all the data on the device. I.e. what you are flashing the TWP back ups and the Titanium back ups.

Unlock the bootloader. (THIS WILL ERASE EVERYTHING - PERFORMS A FACTORY RESET).
(So perform a backup first using either adb pull or Carbon (available on PlayStore)).
Fastboot flash a custom recovery, (CWM or TWRP).
Reboot into that recovery...
Flash the ROM of your choice.

No no I already did that. Like on my S3 I need to wipe cache/delvik factory reset. Doing the factory reset erases the internal storage, since that is where the ROM is being flashed from and where the twp back ups are those could get erased. Which can brick a device. So what do I do to flash a ROM cleanly. Every time I flash a ROM it bootloops.

factory reset on the nexus devices, DO NOT WIPE /data/media which is where your 'sdcard' data is.....

I'm a little vague about what you're asking here...
Haven't used CWM for a while (I forget the details), but in TWRP, having pressed WIPE...
...you can then select (In the wipe menu) CACHE, DALVIK CACHE, FACTORY RESET all with relative impunity... even SYSTEM ('Wipe System? This will wipe your ROM') can be wiped, if you have NANDROID BACKUPS or flashable ROMs to fall back on in internal storage.
The options to wipe EXTERNAL STORAGE, INTERNAL STORAGE and FORMAT DATA, however should be treated with EXTREME CAUTION... as you may be left only with a custom recovery (if you have wiped SYSTEM beforehand)... and then you'll have either have to adb push a NANDROID (or flashable ROM) from your computer or fastboot flash back to stock.
(As an aside by the way, you aren't really 'bricked'... you just have no usable ROM on your system; but that really isn't a problem if you know how to use adb or fastboot).

FACTORY RESET in TWRP doesn't wipe the internal storage... if that is what you're alluding to...

I have never had a device without a removable SD and am used to having the contents of my SD protected when I wipe and then flush, i mean flash (hah). When I wipe with TWRP, will I lose my pix, audio, etc as they are not on a separate partition?

If you lost your pix, audio, etc that would really really suck. I don't think I would flash new ROMs daily. So of course the contents of internal SD are protected. UNLESS you choose to wipe internal storage in TWRP so don't mess with those advced options. They call it a factory reset in TWRP but its not like the phone option to factory reset which does wipe internal storage.
Your app data is lost. Just back up with titanium backup. After flashing new ROM install only TB, then restore apps and data (no system apps!) and you're done!
And make sure you have a backup! If anything does go wrong just restore it.
alright so lets say i download a rom and put it on my internal, then i boot into twrp do i just factory reset or what? i dont understand what to wipe to keep internal intact sorrry im a noob

ok I need some serious help my battery is about to die! I rooted my phone last night and this morning I installed twrp 2632 and then rebooted and the phone now will not boot past the twrp screen then I got a call to go to a hospice home and that took several hours in the meantime my phone will not do anything just drain battery! any help would be greatly appreciated! thanks

After rooting my Nexus 7 wifi 2012 tablet and trying several back ups and restores I started to notice the size of memory has gone from 13gig to 6gig.
I have done a factory reset from boot up recovery mode using TWRP. I also tried other options in TWRP wipe option, clearing internal cache, many other options to mention, not sure what most did, tinkering
I have also restored to a factory image using Nexus root toolkit option flash stock + unroot (forced flash mode) and restored from a downloaded image.
I thought restoring to factory image was suppose to put everythng back as it was! where has all the memory gone! 13gig before rooting and now 6 gig :crying:

Well, I got the size to show back correctly with the factory image restored (13.36gb). I booted to recovery and selected "wipe data/factory reset" and also did the "wipe cache partition" just to be sure.
Why none of this work when I was doing the same from TWRP recovery mode rooted? I have to root again now, bet the same thing will happen and left with lower memory and no way to fix? time............................
Usually, it's TWRP I've always had partition formatting issues with it. Use the CWM recovery meant for your device instead.

Have it sorted now. Turns out NRK buggy. Would not put nandroid backup to destination on hard drive. Not even with a reboot. Hence memory on Nexus tablet shrinking. I should have clocked on earlier. will check out CWM.
I was thinking of keeping NRK. Just read about CWM. Would it be o.k to download CWM from Googleplay and run it or would that interfere with NRK?
I've got the same issue. This weekend I just sideloaded 5.1.1 on mine (it's a 2012 model), and I'm looking at 6Gb only now (it's a 16GB N7).
I also have TWRP on it.
I used the Wugnet Nexus Root Toolkit for everything, which also supports CWM.. but why is that the one "meant" for the device? It's a custom recovery. Or is it more closely based on the stock recovery than TWRP is?

I did a wipe on the cache partition already, so that clearly didn't work. I guess I could wipe data and start all over again.
PS. Using ES File explorer, I've found a number of what appears to be actual copies of my emulated sdcard data, not just symlinks:
1) /sdcard -symlink (to /storage/emulated/0 I think?)
2) /storage/emulated/0 (not a symlink)
3) /storage/emulated/legacy (not a symlink, but data is in there too.. a copy?)
4)/storage/sdcard0 (symlink)
5) /mnt/sdcard (symlink)
6) /data/media/0 (not a symlink, another copy?) Also, weirdly, the only directory I could change permissions on if I wanted to..
I'd have thought that would have been /Storage/emulated/0 .
I think /storage/emulated/0 is the main actual repository, and I get that there are symlinks, but /storage/emulated/legacy and /data/media/0 look like full on duplications to me.
Found the answer - I've got my space back.
1) Restore stock recovery,
2) boot into it and
3) do a factory reset from there.
