ok, so i work for tmobile and i spoke to the tmobile vice president yesterday when he came in for a visit, and yes its true, the 5 gig limit to data service will be applied, once you go over 5 gig you will be throttled down to edge connection until your following month and also tethering will now be available as a feature which will cost 15 dollars a month, this will all go official real soon, so everyone who has been tethering on the side, sorry

This is worse news for me by far. I tether only now-and-then, but I do use it, and I'd hate to have to pay extra for the few times I do...even though, yes, other carriers currently charge.
This sucks! Well they are a business so I understand them charging for tethering but changing the cap to 5gb is pointless since tethering requires 15 bucks a month extra...

I wonder if this applies to nexus one owners. I have had tethering for months on my nexus one have never neared the data cap. Why would I start paying monthly for a feature that I can get for free on my nexus one or for a 1 time fee from the app market for my G2?
Pretty sure that when I signed up for service, I signed up for unlimited data and when I bought my phone, it advertised HSPA+ speeds. So if my phone can only do HSPA+ speeds for a while and T-Mobile wants to try to act like the internet is a depleteable resource. I will be returning my phone and cancelling all of my family's lines and finding a new carrier.

Any of those carriers you switch to will have an even more expensive tethering fee. Best thing to do at this point is to root. I use my nexus when I want to wifi tether.

It sounds good and all but be sure to compare. Tmobile has a "fair" usage clause. They base what is fair usage on what the average data usage across the network is or something very similar to that. They never charge more for going over the cap, they just slow you down.
I'm guessing that they will make the tethering official and roll out the OTA at the same time.

The majority of smartphone users likely don't crest 5GB usage. Those who do continue to have unlimited access at a slower speed. If this is unacceptable to them, they are free to terminate their accounts. As a moderate dataplan user, I'm perfectly fine with that, since in an unlimited scheme, moderate users are basically subsidizing the few outlier heavy users.
I was fine with the 5gb reduction too but charging another 15/month on the "unlimited data" plan to tether? 45/month seems excessive. Need some new perspective.
the cap is for web connect data plans, not for the unlimited plans connected to cell phones

You do realize that once there are no more heavy outliers, you become the heavy outlier. When T-Mobile lowers the cap again to below your data usage, I guarantee you'll be the first to complain.

Iphone tethering is only 10$.. I dont beleive it til i see it. Im thinking it will be free but just capped at 5gb before they throttle to stop people from abusing it

are you saying the 5GB cap will apply to customers on contract (and grandfathered customers free of contract) as well as prepaid customers? - the way that news release is worded, it appears to only apply or refer to prepaid customers.

There will always be heavy outliers in a chart of users (whether in 1990, 2010 or 2100). The important question is whether the bar is above or below the average. Realistically speaking the bulk of those exceeding 5GB are probably tethering (I don't actually agree that tethering should be separate from the phone access, but that's a different discussion), so with the $15 tethering fee it might move the curve back even further under 5GB.
Well, I just checked my month use on t-mobile's website and looks like i only used 1.7 GB for the whole month. Not bad since most of my heavy downloading is done through my residential internet connection anyways. I don't think that I'll ever reach 5GB..
I'm not worried.
Can they just knock us off from a 10gig soft cap to a 5gig? Isn't there a grandfather clause kinda thing?
Besides, how would they know if i tether using pdanet. My data usage doesn't reflect how its being used.

It would be helpful to know where you are located, as Providers are going to vary depending on location..
In the US, most Wireless Providers have done away with "Data Only" plans.
If you are in US, You can get a Data Only plan from AT&T but that will not be cheap, at $50 for 5GB.
But if you walk in the store asking for a Data Only plan they will probably say you're out of luck.
You will have to ask/tell them you need a New SIM+Plan for a Mobile Hotspot Device (MiFi Thing)
That is the only way to get a Data Only plan through AT&T.
T-mobile, depending on who you speak with instore, and how dumb they are. Will sell you a Tablet Data Plan.
But you will probably have to lie and say you have one of their tablets (Galaxy)
And I believe the Nexus 7 is going to be release buy T-mobile anyways, though it will more than likely not be unlocked. (And I personally do not buy locked devices)
There is Straight Talk, which is $45 unlimited everything (Although you won't need Voice or Text, but will have unlimited Data for cheap)
You probably going to have to go with a "PrePaid" service that runs on GSM networks.
And don't rule out Voice/Text just yet, It's still unknown whether the Nexus 7 modem will support Voice/Text or not. It could, and they ability just be locked/excluded from the framework.
I myself will be going with StraightTalk as its the cheapest for unlimited Data. A SIM w/ Voice+Text service will still work, even though Data is all that will be used.

I don't think the extra 6gb package was but another $10 more.
In Germany you can get at E-Plus 100 MB high-speed traffic for 5 Euro. 1 GB for 10 €....

Tethering would depend on your Wireless Provider... Most Providers block Tether Apps (unless you root) But if they have a Tether ("Data Share") option, then its possible to tether the Nexus 7 to your cell phone, without your Provider penalizing you. But then why buy the 3G Model, instead of paying $50 less for the WiFi only version?

I was thinking of selling my new 32 gb for the new nexus 7 32GB 3G, but i have root on my current phone, so i plan to tether, or use my freedom pop hot spot.
I would recommend freedom pop if people have service by their home or commute to work. they offer a free 500 mb a month plan, and all you have to pay for is a hotpot, which is also fully refundable when you no longer want the service. If you want more data they offer some decent pricing plans, and its monthly fees no commitments.
I live in Boston and i get great service with the hotspot.

That's heavily debatable. There are numerous horror stories about how it's basically impossible to get your "deposit" back from this company. In fact, I don't think anyone has ever been successful in that endeavor.
I see several mentions of tether. I thought ATT could detect this now, or is that just the tether apps?

I rooted and have texting, and havent figured out calls yet.
They use t-mobile and its been great service, and you have a chance to make money if you tell people with the social MLM if you choose to.
Data speeds average around 4-6mbs depending on where you are, coverage is pretty much full everywhere.
Alot of people think its a scam, but its a really is a cheap great service.

yea i heard of this company, this would be interesting.
Also straight talk $45 deal is interesting as well. same concept, but you can choose att or T mobile sim. i heard this works well. But the unlimited data is really only about 2 gb give or take 1 gb

it will be fine, simple mobile runs on tmobile. Just do some research on howard forums on prepaid networks. Simple mobile is good if you have to do some international calls as they give u 5 bix a month credit for their unlimited plam.
However based on reports i have read, their unlimited is really about 2gigs. And sometimes they may even cut off data completely. With Straight talk you can choose between tmobile and att and they only throttle you.....

Actually, not he $50 SimpleMobile plan is not limited to 2gigs, its "Unlimited" - To what they define as "Unlimited" I can not say for certain.
They claim to be truly Unlimited; After speaking with their Customer Service, they stated they have not data cap. They will have ever Throttle your speeds (from 4G to 3G) if you violate their TOU/T&C (which you can find on their website; and states crap like do not run a server over their network [technically t-mobiles network] no pirating stuff, etc.. the usual stuff)
With the $40 plan, you are limited to 250mb of 4G, so why not spend the extra $10 and have "Unlimited"
My cousin uses Simple Mobile in Florida, he uses the hell out of it.. He turns his Nexus7 into a Hotspot and connects his laptop to it (while this is a violation of the T&C) and he has yet to be throttled or had service terminated... (the trick to the Hotspot/Tether is to mirror your laptops MAC to that of the device you have the data service through, so they don't notice 2 different device accessing the same data connection)
So you get the $50 Unlimited plan, you max out your usage, they throttle you, you wait until the next month to start fresh, or you Port your number to a new carrier and max out that internet.. No where in the US will you find truly Unlimited Data anymore (Sprint Lies!)

Sprints definitely unlimited...I once used 30gb of their 4g wimax in a month tethering a dd-wrt router to my whole house while time warner was down. But that apartment seemed to be the only place in the city where 4g worked well. Everywhere else its 100kbps max 3g. Lots of places barely get 10kbps and have >1 sec ping. Really hope my nexus 4 gets here soon so I can kick sprint to the curb.
Also check your crappy local stores for simple mobile sims. I just bought one from a shady liquor store for less than the website.

From personal experience the $40 plan is capped at 2gigs then throttled and $50 plan is capped at 5gigs then they cut it of completely so I switched to T-Mobile $30 100 minutes unlimited text and 5gigs of 4g data then I get throttled

OK IMHO if you're considering simple mobile, which is a tracfone, I would recommend getting straight talk/telcel $45 or net10 $50 byop tmobile Sim instead (also tracfone). You can use telcel or net10 that can be bought on ebay for $1 interchanably. NOTE this is NOT the same when using the AT&T byop Sim.
At least they are sorta *unlimited... Simple mobile has these issues; 2gb high speed then throttled, 2gb cap, or instant throttle at 119Kbs from day one.
I am in Florida and I speak from experience, but this may have changed since tmobile themselves changed their $70 from 5gb to unlimited recently.
*I've seen a data screen cap or someone claiming having used 100gb without issues.
I also used T-Mobile/Walmart $30 plan but 100 min was not enough for me, even when using VoIP calling. I also hit the 5gb data limit.
Switched back to st but using tmo byop Sim this time. Got refills currently from $33-42/m no taxes but its not always the case.

If you can live with the data cap look into ptel. Their $40.00 unlimited plan is the same as simple mobile's. Your can order a sim and $40.00 pin and use the promo code "ptelslick20" and pay $20.00. The pins are good for a year so order 12 of these. I am switching when my 30 days expire with simple mobile
Simple Mobile raised their 50 dollar plan to 55 dollars after taxes and fees etc. Thinking about switching to Straight Talk.

I didn't want to create another thread but hoping someone can answer this since it's related to my Nexus 4 and Simple mobile.

Not sure if anyone noticed but Verizon announced yesterday it was bringing back unlimited data! I was on the 24 GB plan with 10 devices. The VZ web site is basically down when you try and upgrade so I spent 2 hours on hold. When I finally got someone they compared what I pay now with what it would cost to go to unlimited. My cost went DOWN 30 bucks a month to go to unlimited. They can throttle you after 22 GB but only if there is heavy network congestion. I think this is the same thing T-Mobile and AT&T too. This new plan also provides 10 GB of hotspot use. I signed up just now.

Yeah this was all over Internet. Bad news: you can't use corporate discount. I am better off on their short lived 12 GB plan+2 extra GB wth rollover as it is cheaper wth corporate discount. Many months I have 20+ GB which is more than enough for me.

In my experience, the unlimited plans are great for people that are constantly scrolling their way through Facebook and Instagram and can't stay off Snapchat. Additionally (and perhaps more importantly), these plans are useful for people that like to stream videos and shows when WiFi isn't available to them. The fact that these videos are streamed to your device in the highest quality the connection can achieve is actually a problem. This is because you only get 10GB of 4G LTE data a month, afterwards it's throttled to 3G. This means that watching videos will use up your 10GB in a flash and then you'll be stuck with mediocre speeds.
For comparison, the equivalent T-Mobile plan gives you 26 GBs of unthrottled data for $10 less, after which you have the chance of being throttled. The only drawback being that all of the video content you watch is in 460p or less. Either way, it's kind of cool to see Verizon bringing this plan back. Competition is usually good for consumers.

The only thing that is getting throttled is your tethering (hotspot) after 10gigs ..
As far as streaming movies and TV shows from your phone, you can do that as much as you want. And you won't notice and slowdown unless there is heavy network congestion AND you've used over 22gig already.
Nothing off or weird about this at all.

I've highlighted two bullets there for a very specific reason. In my experience, the unlimited plans are great for people that are constantly scrolling their way through Facebook and Instagram and can't stay off Snapchat. Additionally (and perhaps more importantly), these plans are useful for people that like to stream videos and shows when WiFi isn't available to them. The fact that these videos are streamed to your device in the highest quality the connection can achieve is actually a problem. This is because you only get 10GB of 4G LTE data a month, afterwards it's throttled to 3G. This means that watching videos will use up your 10GB in a flash and then you'll be stuck with mediocre speeds.
For comparison, the equivalent T-Mobile plan gives you 26 GBs of unthrottled data for $10 less, after which you have the chance of being throttled. The only drawback being that all of the video content you watch is in 460p or less. Either way, it's kind of cool to see Verizon bringing this plan back. Competition is usually good for consumers.

Lol not a problem. Just didn't want any misinformation about the new plan being thrown around, because in some regards, this could be better than T-Mobile's plan.

Inapplicable corporate discount is what's keeping me from upgrading to this plan. I get 21% off. That's a significant amount.
I wonder what the core differences are between the old Unlimited data plan that costs $50 now vs this new one. I know they both will have the 22GB "soft cap" as that has been a thing for quite some time now. Since I'm sure quite a few of us tether without the extra monthly charge I wonder if we were to switch over and they provision our line, Verizon would be able to detect this? If that is the case 10GB being tethered will go fast especially when you're watching videos. I tether my devices a lot at work to listen music and watch YouTube and I can exceed that quite quickly. I'm wondering with the new plan with custom software on our devices if they would be able to detect the tethering activity or not. Looking forward to seeing people's thoughts on this . I'd save $8/month switching to the new plan even w/ my 21% discount not applying.
I get veterans discount so I'm really debating about doing this. I wonder since I have the bypass that the tethering would still get bypassed so instead of the 10gb it would be on the mobile side data.

I guess it would be a messy bill if you did make the change to go into effect immediately. Verizon and their prorations and month in advance billing.

I switched immediately. Dropped my bill by about 20 or so.
won't save me any money with them taking away the corporate discount. It would cost me 45 more. I rarely use more than 2 GB a month, always on wifi (at work, home, wherever xfinity has a hotspot). I am on the 12GB plan and have 2 GB of bonus data from getting my pixel xl.

The old plan doesn't have a throttle cap at all.
I lost my 20% Corporate discount but I kept running out of data with a week left in my cycle and I had the 30 GB plan. I have 6 phones and one tablet on my account. This new plan winds up costing about the same as the old plan with the 20% discount but I'll get more data as one phone rarely uses the bulk of our data. It's 4 of the 6. Even if they do throttle at 22 GB per line, that would be 88 GB in total on the 4 lines that use a lot of data.
It's not perfect, but it suits my needs better.
I have the old UDP with no cap use 200gb monthly never throttled and there's a loophole for the $29.99 pricing for UDP

Right now I am on 12 Gigs +6 Gigs Bonus Data. When I switch my bill goes up quite a bit. And I never use more than 10 gigs in a month. Not sure this is for me.

Yep, that was the other thing... No Corp Discount and must Auto pay on Checking Acount or a Debit Card... No credit cards allowed for auto pay on this program. :crying:

Anyone switch to the new verizon unlimited plan who is grandfather in the old unlimited plan? I see the difference in savings but is it worth it? Any fine print we are missing?

I would say it's worth it if you use a lot of data and if it saves you money why not??
I don't know if they're planning on changing it but right now you'll lose your employee discount(s) per the CS rep I spoke to and his supervisor.
ETA I read the 1st post wrong, I don't know if you get discounts with the old UL plan. If not,disregard....

You are correct, Discounts will no longer happen on new plans.

I went by the my local verizon store and the new plan is 22gb shared for all lines and not 22gigs per line. You also get 10 gig for your hotpspot shared. #FinePrint #VerizonFail
If it was 22gigs per line I would switch today but to get that it would $100 per line.
One side note: Because I'm on the grandfathered plan, phone upgrades were never possible. The system now lets me do a payment plan on all phones. They tried this on a pixel XL in the system and everything went through with no issues.

The 22 gigs isn't a soft cap, they just might throttle you if the network is congested in your area. I don't see them doing it often though since they don't on legacy UDP users and AT&T says the same thing on their UDP (for DirecTV customers) and I've seen people on that plan use over 50GBs without throttling on that plan. Verizon usually mirrors AT&T plans/policies, which is why I think that's relevant.
I don't think Verizon reps are very reliable either, as I've asked different reps the same question several times before and got different answers on technical things like this before. I would ask another one or two more on the phone or in store and you'll see how useless they are.

I hate to make this move after struggling for years to keep grandfathered UDP. The only downside I see is that currently we wouldn't be throttled above 22 GB, but with the new plan, we could be. If that is the only downside (even after losing company discount), it is so worth it to save $50/month in my case.
I did ask Verizon and they said I'm not losing anything by making the switch, but I don't exactly trust them.
How can we determine for sure?

I switched the day it came out. I'm currently at 30GB for the month and haven't noticed any throttling yet, and I've been steaming a lot and watching quite a bit of YouTube. I've been running speed tests to check randomly. They said throttling or being prioritized on the network might happen to the top 3% I believe. It probably all depends on your location as far as any of the fine print goes. It's a leap of faith, but worth it in the long run I'd imagine unless you need peak speeds at all times. Which most people probably don't.
T-Mobile is still the best deal with the best price. $70 1 line, $100 for 2 lines full HD 1080p streaming (VZW is 720p) 10gb HotSpot 28gb before de-prioritization (VZW 22gb). It's the 2 line deal thats the no brainer.

Yeah as long as you live in a larger city where they actually have coverage. I get 110mbps download speeds at my house in the middle of nowhere with Verizon. T-Mobile barely has 3G and no building penetration back here. Pass.

Stupid question regarding building penetration - I live in Atlanta where the coverage is great except for my condo. If I was in the middle of the building, I'd expect crappy signal due to concrete structure, etc; however, with floor to ceiling windows and being very close to them, why would I still get crappy signal?
I've never pulled 110 mbps down - that is nice! What am I doing wrong?

Well I don't live in a big city. I live in a rural area 40 miles south of Philly and about 60 miles north of Baltimore. I get 80-90mbps . The thinking of T-Mobile having only coverage in big cities hasn't held true for well over a year or 2 now. Plus, I doubt you're truly in the middle of nowhere if you're getting 110mbps. That would mean you would have a cell tower on your property basically.
You get up to 22 gigs then it slows down. But if people in your area are not crowding the towers you should be good

My question is: for anyone who tethers on the grandfathered unlimited data plan without paying extra because you have an unlocked nexus 6p, will verizon be able to detect the 10GB of tethering if you switch to the new Unlimited plan, even if you didn't buy your phone from verizon (ie no software to detect tethering to force you to pay more, as would happen on grandfathered unlimited data)?
