[Q] Nexus 4 won't upgrade to 4.2.2 in any way - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

[Q] OTA failed and displayed dead Android saying Error! Tried to sideload the zip file using Toolkit 1.6.8 and it didn't go through. Tried to load it using TWRP and this is what I get:
Code:
Verifying current system...
assert failed: apply_patch_check("/system/build.prop". "5a778d005448ec19
E:Error in /sdcard/de8b8...zip
(Status 7)
Error flashing zip '/sdcard/de8b8...zip
I'm running rooted stock ROM, never tried anything else so I don't know how I could have messed up something.
Thanks for any ideas!

Flash a stock rom and install the OTA through adb sideload with adb and not by a toolkit, worked for me. After that reroot. Also read this thread well http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2145848.

No, never. I just wiped the phone and installed stock 4.2.2 using the Toolkit and now it won't boot.
EDIT: I guess that's because the Toolkit doesn't support 4.2.2. Oh well just flashed it using ADB. Hope I can get all my app data back...

I've tried to install superuser .zip files.....nandroid backup .zips....with no success. I always get hung up on the splash screen!

Did you follow the terrible guide at http://nexusshacks.com/nexus-s-hacks/how-to-root-nexus-s/ where you flash the insecure boot image that is way out of date and only for the i9020t?
Are you trying to restore a stock rom or a custom rom? Either way, grab the full package OTA of a stock rom for your device (around 90mb) or your custom rom of choice and flash that from CWM. That will write a new boot.img as well as /system, etc.

I didn't follow that guide thankfully but I still think I followed an outdated procedure.
So when i try to install a rom Clockwork always aborts the installation.
here is the error I get:

Do you have a GSM Nexus S (i9020t, i9020a, i90230) or the CDMA Nexus S 4G? If it's the latter you are trying to flash a ROM that's not for your device. Get a rom for the NS4G from that development forum (device = crespo4g).
have you tried flashing a rom?

It is the GSM Nexus S i9020A. Don't believe that to be an issue.
I've threw so many different zip files on my sd card when I mount it via usb and I always seem to get that same error message. Pretty frustrating....I always read about people not being able to flash recovery but I'm there.....I just can't seem to find anyone who has my same issue...
Any other information I can provide that would be useful?

I've actually got version 3.1 going right now with no luck
What is the latest version ?
Update CWM to higher than 4.0.0.0. You could flash the zip below in recovery and if that doesn't work then find the new version with fastboot.

EDIT: Just flash one of these with fastboot: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=988686&highlight=clockwork+recovery
The first and second ones will work for you.

Flash the stock kernel. You can do it a number of ways. You can find a cwm zip file with it, use the toolkit to do it, or get the IMG yourself and flash it via fast boot. I had this error earlier.
Install a custom recovery and use it to run the update. If you already have a custom recovery, then that's why you can't run the ota via google possibly.

Any guides on this? Pretty new to android.
Anyone have any thoughts on what I should do?
Did you touch any of your system apps?
Seems more likely your update didn't download fully and it failed and md5 checksum. Just try again next time.
I don't think I touched any of the system apps. I did download Adblock and six axis tool. Anything else to look for?
I've downloaded the update probably 4 different times now and same thing each time.
Anything else I can try?

Any other options besides resetting? has no one else who only rooted and unlocked run into this problem???
I didn't change any system apps, and for rooting purposes the only apps I downloaded where Titanium Backup, Sixaxis and Stickmount. Should I remove those?
and OT Rootkeeper. Do I remove root first?

I was getting exactly the same as you Foxman2k, about the unverified whole-file signature when trying the OTA way. I've just followed the advice of the above linked thread and it worked fine. I had to install Quick Boot (Reboot) to get in to Recovery, then update from SD Card, then ensure signature verification is disabled, then select the downloaded .zip file. I did have RootKeeper active, but I don't really understand what that does so not sure if it made any difference.
HTH
I finally managed to get mine to go through, am rooted but running stock and was getting the error with build.prop.
Then it hit me, I am in tablet mode with my screen at 160, so I set it back to 213 and boom it went through.

4.2.2 Update Won't Install

I've grabbed the 4.2.2 update file and tried installing throw CWR, but I get the error 7 assert failed thing. It was because of some modified system files but i've fixed that, and now it has to do with something like /dev/block/mmc or something along those lines (i can't remember the exact error off the top of my head. I think the problem is that I have a custom kernel.
Does anyone have a CWR flash-able version of the stock 4.2.1 kernel?

It looks like they're right. Somewhere I got a bad stock image (I think from the Nexus10 Toolkit). Here's where I found the files that worked:
http://www.randomphantasmagoria.com/firmware/nexus-10/mantaray/.
I used the Nexus10 Toolkit to reinstall the 4.2 firmware and then the 4.2.1 and 4.2.2 update zips.
Good luck!

There was an older, broken factory 4.2 image that wouldn't update to 4.2.1, but they updated the link on their site now. In any case, if you have Android SDK set up properly, you can literally just double-click a batch file included with the factory image, wait, and be restocked.
The fun part is just setting up Android SDK (which should be done instead of toolkits )

i had the same problem
i downloaded the lastest 4.3 image from google (https://developers.google.com/android/nexus/images#nakasijwr66y)
you must have a clean and fresh install of it.
trying to flash this via CWM or TWRP recovery failed.
so i extractet the image and used the "flash-all.bat/flash-all.sh"
all user data were gone (i dont care about at my tablet ) but so a could flash the rom.
after that i could flash the update to 4.4
oder esyer now. flash the stock 4.4 image

I've attached the original file I extracted from the 4.3 stock image (nakasi-jwr66y-factory-1e503532.tgz).
You can try copying it to /system/etc/ (ensuring permissions are correct) and then retry the installation.
I suspect that if you've been playing around with audio tweaks then it's going to fail on other files too.
If it does, then you can use fastboot to _just_ flash the system.img and you won't lose any of your data.
Same thing happened to me. But it's worse, it's stuck on bootloader and Windows won't recognize the device (unkown device on device manager) so I can't even use adb to flash factory image. I'm really desperate here, anyone here with a tip?

Use Wug toolkit to install drivers (it has a couple of possibilities) until it works, then install factory image.
I got it to work on windows 8.1, so it's possible.
I'm having a similar problem. I tried to adb sideload 4.4 that I downloaded from the google website and got an error. Now my nexus 7 is bootlooping at the google logo and returning to twrp shortly after. I can't seem to use fastboot and I've wiped everything. I'm also on a Mac. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I can't seem to figure out a solution.

Nexus 7 grouper, manual update fails

I have a Nexus 7 (2012, grouper) which so far I have kept on 4.1.2 (JZO54K) using FOTAkill, but now I want to update to 4.2.2. I also have the latest CWM recovery (6.0.4.3).
I plan on applying successively:
094f6629314a.signed-nakasi-JOP40C-from-JZO54K.094f6629.zip
then
659e6288b87d.signed-nakasi-JOP40D-from-JOP40C.659e6288.zip
then
6ece895ecb23.signed-nakasi-JDQ39-from-JOP40D.6ece895e.zip
Using ADB I tried to apply the first update, but it fails. I also tried applying it from /sdcard, but the same thing happens. The error message happens after "verifying current system..." and it consists of:
assert failed: apply_patch_check("/system/app/Browser/ProviderProxy.odex", "21a896ab...
E: Error in /data/media/094f6629314a.signed-nakasi-JOP40C-from-JZO54K.094f6629.zip
(status 7)
I tried downloading the zip update again, but it still fails. I downloaded it from http://android.clients.google.com/p...signed-nakasi-JOP40C-from-JZO54K.094f6629.zip
Does the fact that by bootloader is locked have anything to do with this error?
...and the answer is no. Even with bootloader unlocked, the update still fails with the same error.
