Hola Guys...can somebody list some reasons to own a XOOM tablet if you already own a laptop(macbook pro)? Everyday im drooling more and more for this tablet...but I don't see a very good reason to own one if somebody have a laptop thats in very good condition...
Well.. if you didn't already figure this one out yourself, here is a list from the top of my head:
With a laptop:
1) You can't hold a laptop with the lid open in one hand and use it (for a long period)
2) You can't remove the keyboard from the screen if all you want to do is read/watch movies (it's stuck there forever)
3) You can't use the screen to navigate (you need the touchpad or "joyknob" or mouse)
4) You don't have a camera on the back to snap pictures
5) You usually have to carry an extra bag/backpack (charger, cables, mouse, ..)
With a tablet:
1) You can't read/write DVD's
2) You can't use it for high CPU/memory intensive tasks (coding, video editing, 3D raytracing,etc.)
Most people can perfectly combine a tablet and a laptop for their tasks: a laptop for coding/video-editing/burning, and a tablet for email, ebooks, twitter/fb, movies, music, (video)chatting, pictures and browsing.
The biggest one for me would have to be: you can't connect an external hard drive to a tablet.
I have all my videos on my 1tb 2.5"...
I'm planning on selling my laptop- probably wont get much for it, but keeping it seems redundant.

magicdroid's list hits all the major pros and cons. For me, the major incentive is instant-on for web browsing and a few other apps.
asianxtreme - most of us just have a decent size SD card and rotate shows/movies.
OP - the one catch to all the arguments in favor of a tablet would be having the latest Macbook Air. It has instant-on and amazing battery life. I'm no Apple fan, but having one of those would easily convince me to ditch almost any tablet, as it is extremely thin and light. Of course, the pricetag is pretty unfriendly.
Dont you already have an incredible/fascinate?

You'd really want to stream anyway. Local storage is starting to phase out in a way. Everything is in the cloud or at least stored on a home media server/desktop.
SMB is used for accessing public shares... and the apps for running them from an SMB are getting better.
For me, why I want a tablet?
1. Battery life
2. Instant on (no need to wait for booting!)
3. Easy to carry and hold
4. Touch screen friendly (I hate mouse)
That's all the points, bottom line, it is for most of daily tasks and entertainments:
- Web browsing, email, movies, photo viewer, reading?, facebook, games ...
If I need heavy duty tasks like photo / video editing, coding then I will sit in front of my desktop computer.
Otherwise, just lay down in the couch or bed with the tablet!
Fast, easy and simple
For me I had purchased a G73 asus laptop, which is way to heavy for daily carry. So a tablet will be something i will use for class and entertainment purposes when i'm out and about. the laptop will remain in the house and only be carried out when I need to do some extensive work on it for class.
I decided to get a tablet when I had a crappy delivery job for 3 days and needed to enter delivery information into a google spreadsheet while driving. I tried it unsuccesfully with a 17" Toshiba X205-S9349 laptop... it was marketed as a gaming laptop so it's not a perfect example. It is BARELY a laptop as heavy as it is. It's heavier in a laptop bag then my kindle, evo, thumb drives, pens, cables, evo, and a viewsonic g-tablet in my messenger bag.
I also say DON'T SELL YOUR LAPTOP. Unless you are on a right budget, it's better to have backup devices because things break. My parents talked me out of selling my laptop and it has saved my ass on numerous occasions. Be a true geek and have a device for every occasion. Your tablet will be your everyday mobile device that can do pretty much all of what you could need on the go. It can read/edit documents... record audio(actually I'm unsure about this and can't find an answer, did they forget to put a mic on this thing?), pictures, video. It offers you full internet, which is a big deal because you can do most anything with web apps these days. Think Star Trek, or Stargate Atlantis, or any other sci-fi where they use a tablet. I really do think one day laptops will be obsolete.
We will simply have tablets with docking stations. I mean think about how capable your phone is. My HTC EVO does EVERYTHING I need on the go, except that it is too small for some things and a touch slow on some. The difference between a 4.3" EVO and a 10.1" Xoom is not just a superior UI.. its 450% increased screen area.
Stargate Atlantis is why I'm getting a tablet, it's the future.
There is no easy way to mane anything because in actuality eventhough tablets are pretty cool they have not got far enough yet to replace a laptop yet....Don't get me wrong they are close all they really need to do is make it so u can collect external hard drives and cd/dvd drives.

It's been reported that Laptops only just overtook the desktop last year. I dont think true tablets will ever support external devices like hard-drives or cd-drives. It's not the direction of technology. Yes, we need them now, but we wont in 5 years. solid state drives will hit the TB range by then if not sooner. Also, most of our pictures will be on the cloud, videos will be streamed from your home media server or you'll buy (own) the rights to stream shows/movies from the web instead of having subscriptions (think eBooks, but with movies).
Tablets will overtake laptops, but we'll still have need for docking stations, for real work, for at least another 10 years.
I think I could almost get away with using a tablet as my primary work device.
I already use Google Docs as my word processor, so no problems there.
For coding, the only thing I need is a terminal and an SSH client, since most of the stuff I do is remote using Vim.
Of course, I do need some sort of physical keyboard, when I'm doing heavy-duty stuff, so I'm hoping that something like this...

You can use any Bluetooth keyboard with the Xoom. The tablet only has to support (HID) protocol. Actually, if you go over to the MOTO website, there's a docking station as well as MOTO keyboards.

Yes, but I'm more interested in a solution that includes a keyboard embedded in a case. To me, it just seems more convenient than having to carry around a cradle and keyboard with my tablet.

I hear that Google VoiceSearch v12.6 will have full speech recognition that will make keyboards and mice obsolete!
It reminds me of Star Trek IV where Scotty tries to interact with a Mac by talking to it.

If you want a keyboard in a case.. buy a laptop
In all seriousness I do find that a little silly, though I can understand the logic and utility of such a thing. Carrying it all the time like that though, which it sounds like you want to do is well and truly a laptop. A keyboard that is dockable would be good.. but I still think a seperate keyboard is fine.. and just prop the tablet up in a folio case.

I already have a laptop, and it's perfectly fine for many tasks, but it lacks a lot of tools that I would get with a tablet. I would much rather bring my laptop to a coffee shop, but when I'm traveling, I like to do some light work, and a tablet (GPS, Verizon data, e-reader) makes for a friendlier traveling companion than a laptop. If I had a tablet with a keyboard, I could have most of my tools in a single package. Without a physical keyboard, I'd have to bring my laptop along for the ride, and I'd really rather not have to bring two larger devices every time I travel.
Truth be told, there's nothing I would love more than a tablet that let me make voice calls via a bluetooth headset. With that, I'd even dump my phone.

For my sake, may I ask what tools the tablet has that your laptop lacks. I don't say that as a challenge, but rather I am seeking ways to use the device that I am not aware of yet.

The problem with this is we are starting to see the beginning of the end of unlimited data plans. So if we have to stream everything, that will come with more data use and cost.
So a tablet won't be able to access an external hard drive? Even with an app like like Astro?
I didn't think it would be possible, but I think it would be cool to have access to an external dvd/cd/blu ray burner with plug and use/play technology.
If these 2 things were possible, people could really ditch their laptops and netbooks for the tablets. Netbooks had the possibility of an external drive, which opened up the usability imo.
First off, I'm a die hard android fan and a former iOS user (3GS). This post isn't to discuss hardware specs etc but real world use.... Again, this isn't your everyday ipad2 vs xoom thread because I can read whats on paper. Obviously there are no real world usage yet with the ipad 2 but for all intensive purposes we can use the ipad as its test competitor.
My questions stem from the use of the tablet mainly revolving around pro photography use;
I'll be using the Tablet to view pics out in the field to get an idea of how they are turning out. Although not a huge deciding factor, ability to edit would be nice. RAW support is a must (i know iPad supports, does android/xoom/3rd party software?) Use as a portfolio a must.
Most importantly native or jailbroken/rooted/hacked/etc support for USB Host. I'll need the ability to add an external media source - i.e compact flash, thumb drive, hard drive, etc... to store majority of the photos. I won't be storing any of the files on the internal storage so access from the drive is extremely important..
I can't think of any other questions right now off the top of my head but should any photographers feel the need to debate or add any info please feel free.
i have a Xoom, and I'm a graphic designer, but I'm not pro photography, but me and a friend have done pro styled shoots for a few weddings. But thats not really relevant ciponsidering you're really only concerned with viewing/displaying/accessing your data.
Both will be able to do all you're requests.
The xoom will be easier because it has a micro USB built in so an external hard drive of any type will (besides obviously flash drives that have a full USB connection) will be able to connect without an extra cord.
The ipad2 will only have the normal cord apple uses and a micro hdmi (which the xoom does too) so it requires the extra cord regardless.
The xoom also has a mcro SD slot, the I pad to will need a different purchase of a different cord for this.
I'd take the xoom for what you're wanting to do.
I'm not sure the Xoom can have an external drive connected, you might be right, but I'd be sure to check that out. In order to do that the Xoom would have to operate as a host. I've seen a few threads but no answers if this will be possible.
It's my understanding that it will be able to at one point. I'll try to find the source where I read it.

Not a pro, but am heavily invested in photography, nonetheless. I would love a RAW viewer, even basic editor for my Xoom. A guy is working on an Android app for using Android devices for camera control. Give me an app that would use the xoom for live view, time lapse, raw view, and light editing and I would be willing to drop some cash for it...oh, and make it Canon 5d II compatible, please

If you're like me, you decided that the 32GB model was too much for so small extra storage. I decided to go this route instead.
First, you pick up one of these:

Then you get one of these or use one you have laying around from a previous phone (I have several):

Then you root and install "StickMount" from the market for free. You end up with a 48GB or larger model. It's also great for accessing photos I've saved on my Galaxy Note 2 (saved to SD) and viewing them on the bigger screen.
I do my Titanium and Nandroid backups to this device and then I'm not carrying them around on the device all the time taking up space. Yes, this even works with TWRP Recovery, as you go to the "Mount" menu and set it to look to your OTG device instead of onboard storage.
If I need to load up some movies for a trip, I put them on the SD and pop them in when I want to watch. Really works great.
I still like having the extra internal storage. I do plan on storing Nandroid and Titanium Backups backups on a flash drive using this method.

I thought I would, too, but the original Nexus 7 16GB was never more than half filled even with a ton of apps I never used. I tend to watch and listen to video podcasts and Google Music on my phone or it might be different.

Games, ROMs, and movies are what kill me. I like to store a few different ROMs, I have a bunch of large games (Grand Theft Auto, Bard's Tale), and I usually keep about 3-5 movies until I watch them.
At only 40 bucks difference in price, not getting the 32 seems silly.
Just so others know there are other flavors of usb otg devices out there. Just get the otg cable and connect an external drive or any usb stick. Or mouse/keyboard.
I got the 16gb model because they were out of the 32s where I picked up mine. Still thinking if I should go back and get the 32 but may give the cloud/lan a try and see how I do. I use tasker and a couple programs to auto upload files when I'm home, so really the only thing on my storage is apps. Media is all pretty easy to stream where ever I use a tablet.
I would rather have more internal storage then external storage. The fragile micro USB port is the weak point of the tablet so I want to use that as little as possible. Besides using it for fastboot and ADB while in recovery, I do everything else wirelessly including wireless charging, ADB over Wifi and transfer over WiFi. It is much more convenient to torrent straight onto the tablet then transferring from the PC via external storage or be dependent on the OTG adapter always plugged in for downloading onto. A single TV episode is 1 - 1.3 GB and a movie is 2 - 5GB so the ~11.5 GB of useable internal storage is really not enough.
I just use my router+external hard drive as an ftp server as backup. Also use it as a dlna server. No need to store anything locally. As long as I'm on my lan...
I like the one from www.meenova.com better since its a smaller form factor.
Only problem is that they aren't available yet.

Exactly my situation... amazon was sold out on the 32. I actually think it is a good exercise to try using the smaller version with cloud services. I have plenty of Dropbox storage and have Dropsync Pro purchased. Also have box.com and Asus' storage solution. Must have 200gb total! File Expert cloud services works great and is quite fun.
This approach is just right for me. Not for everybody, of course.

Roms kill me. Start crack flashing and next thing you know you're out of storage. I also like games and when playing BardsTale on my 16gb, I hit the wall. My 16gb got stolen the same day OfficeDepot started leaking the 32gbs early. I literally came home with 16gb, read XDA on PC and immediately left again.
OTG is handy but I wouldn't want to be reliant on it. I use it mostly for grabbing files off USB disks.

By the end of August they will be available, I've one ordered.
32GB is the best for me. Road trips and shorter car trips, I don't have access to cloud services, and I don't trust my young'uns to not break the micro USB connector with a cable and USB drive dangling from it. It's nice to have it locally and not be at the mercy of Internet speeds wherever I happen to be. Is there anything more annoying than stuttering youtube?

TF card have very slow random I/O, it's better not to use TF card.
Low random I/O means slow game loading.
And don't think class 10 TF cards would be better at random I/O than class 2 ones because they are not.
Use small USB flash instead would be better, if possible.:cyclops:

Yeah, yeah. Goody for you. The point is if you didn't get the 32gb, this is a solution that works. Not for all who need the 32, but they wouldn't make a 16 if it wasn't good enough for many (like me).

I like that one, too. However, mine was cheap and the fact that the other one isn't available seems to weigh pretty heavily toward the one I selected, right?

Very good review, I'm a lazy reader a and I still finished most of it, you didn't mentioned you ScreenOn Time? Did you? I would like to know what tour SOT is with your usage pattern, and just one thing, I would seriously try to get a sd reader to microusb otg, they exist, this would allow you to use sd cards when needed and get a little more speed, I suspect microsd is always slower than full size sds.

Thank you glad you liked the review - I completely forgot about the screen on time I'll will add it to the article when I get the chance. I prefer the dedicated canon camera cables via OTG USB when connecting as opposed to using external card readers. When working away it is a lot easier to lose the card readers as they are smaller than the cables themselves and also easier to find on my bag. Just a personal preference

I had no idea your cameras had a way to directly connect OTG, I kept thinking you were removing microsd cards and putting them inside the Fire, so you actual solution is a million times better than my sugestion.
Yeah the review is very good, I mean for $50 the tablet is the best bang for the buck as we say in the US..

Dedicated cables are the future until you lose them
Hi guys. I have an Amazon fire tv box at the moment. Fully rooted and running some good media stuff. I am selling and upgrading to a sheild tv. My question is this. Which model should I go for? From a rooting point of view, is the 500gb model just the same to do. I have read posts talking of difficulties. If I buy the 16gb model and use an external hdd, is this the same as a pro model? I understand you can use external as internal now? Could someone enlighten me?
16gb of course... Best speed... And yes with the adoptative storage... I got a 500gb external hdd usb 3.0 as internal, no problems.. A cheapest option for more internal storage.

Personally I recommend the 16GB
however, if you plan to use a lot of internal storage and dont want to mess with figuring out adoptive storage then the 500GB pro would benefit you.
(adoptive storage really inst that difficult in my opinion and works really well making the 16GB far more appealing but since so many people have been having issues with it I thought it should be noted)
Shield Pro:
Pros:
the 500gb is always seen as internal storage
No need to use adoptive storage unless you are putting massive amounts of offline media on it
No real need to use external storage except for transferring files to it.
Cons:
The 500GB hard drive is a normal hard disk which does make a little noise, this bothers some people.
Early models had some issues with defective hard drives
Some people report slight performance issues compared to the 16GB model which they attribute to the hard disk
Bottom line: the Pro is going to be easier to use all around if you plan to install a lot of games or offline media but it is noisier and may have some performance stutters, also note that there were some earlier models with hard drive failure. nvidia has been great about replacing them but it should be noted.
Shield 16GB
Pros:
Smoother performance (Per some reports)
Cheaper
No defective hard drive issues since it doesn't have a hard drive.
Quieter
Adoptive storage in 6.0 gives the option to bridge the storage gap with the pro. (There are some cons to this though, see below)
When using fast external storage media as adoptive storage in my experience there have been no performance issues whatsoever.
Cons:
only 16GB of internal space
When installing multiple large games you will need to use adoptive storage
To use adoptive storage you will need to either purchase an additional SD card, OTG drive or hard disk unless you have one with good write speeds laying around.
if using slower memory as adoptive storage there are some very definite performance issues.
Bottom line: if you wont be installing many large games at the same time and use external storage for music, videos and Game Roms then this model is a no brainer being the cheaper option with generally better performance and no risk of a defective hard drive.
however, if you want to install a lot of large games to it and otherwise heavily use adoptive storage then you have to be very careful to make sure you understand how it works and what you need or it can be a headache. (you can tell this pretty easily reading through the forums with so many people complaining about it) in my own experience it works pretty well though as long as you understand what you are getting into.
I have both and never had a single issue with either... until the 3.0 update... but thats another story... in my experience, they perform the same in regards to the x1 chip... ive never heard the HDD in the pro model and i was a day one adopter... the list above is comprehensive and pretty much hits the nail on the head, but i just wanted to chime in and say that ive never heard the HDD spinning on my pro model.
If the pro model also has emmc for OS and only uses the HD as storage, I'd consider the Pro model. Unfortunately SATV Pro uses the HD for OS and it's impossible for users to clone the HD. HDs are likely to fail sooner than emmcs and make the SATV pro a waste.
SATV should have a standard SATA interface for storage and emmc for OS like the Jetson TX1.
I see little benefit in getting a pro now. If you want the absolute fastest in terms of storage you may as well get an external usb3 ssd and use that as adoptable storage
I'll be honest I didn't consider the pro as it was $100 more expensive for the 500gb hd which is an absolute rip off. If it was $50 I would have probably got one. Depends how OCD you are about clutter, personally I don't mind using an external HD.

First thing I'm gonna do is root it.
Should I upgrade to latest 3 software? And flash a Custom rom?
I've read that something weird happens with the controller not working?
Anyway I'm very excited and consider it an upgrade from my Amazon fire tv box. I hope!?

I would recommend the remote, though it is a bit pricey for what it does.
The biggest place its come in handy for me is when I pair a Bluetooth device (Mouse, other controller etc.) the controller always seems to disconnect for some reason and wont let me hit the "Pair" button.
The remote never has connectivity issues for me and so I can always just grab it and hit the "Pair" button and worry about getting the controller reconnected later.
I also tend to use it when I'm watching movies using headphones because I can plug the headphones into the remote.
this can be done with the controller as well but it has three small benefits that I've found over using the controller:
1. its smaller and lighter than the controller so you can slip it in your pocket and still hear what's going on if you need to run to the kitchen in the middle of a movie or something.
2. it doesn't have any lights where the controller has lights that stay on all the time (Nvidia shield logo, home, start, back etc.) which can be a bit of an annoyance watching movies in the dark.
3. the buttons are much harder to accidentally press
It can also be used as a controller in some games which is a plus for some (I prefer the controller myself but my wife far prefers the remote for simple games like badlands and dragon fly)
I love it and would recommend it for the reasons above but for some people its probably redundant since the controller can perform all of the same functions.
so if the price isn't an issue I would go for it hands down, but if you were planning on using the money for something more pressing (a second controller or more storage etc.) your money may be better off used elsewhere.
