Charging habits - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I normally leave my Nexus 7 plugged in and turned on when not in use. Is this bad for the battery? Should I be turning it off and leaving it unplugged, or off and plugged in instead? Thanks
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I727 using xda premium

I wouldn't worry, batteries are much better now and last much longer now when used like this.
By the time its an issue you'll be looking for a new tab or you can simply replace the battery, it's easy on the n7.

In my TF101 I charge it to 100%, then use it until android cries for power (around 15%) then charge again.
Sometimes I charge and use, other times I charge while off. Almost 2 years like this and battery life seems to be as good as when it was new.
I am doing the same thing on the N7.
Anyway, as dexter said, I think it's more easy nowadays than it was with NiMH / NiCd batteries. There are lots of recommendations, but surely most of them will render similar battery life.

I leave it on all the time, charge only when i am @ home or @ office when I notice it has dropped below 40-50%, no problems so far... If I turn it off, I wouldn't get notifications (even though I would on my phone)... but I kinda like to just take it whenever I like and not wait for it to boot...

I've read the more important factor is the opposite, don't let it drain down to 0%.

This. Complete discharge is bad for the battery and can cause it to fail completely. As long as one doesn't constantly deplete their battery, it should last the life of the tablet.

New to the tab from the xoom, question about battery.

I just picked up the tab today and i am liking it so much more than the xoom. Much much more. But the one thing I am concerned about is that the battery charging time is unbelievably slow.
The one thing I could say in the xooms favor was that the battery charging speed was supernatural. It literally took less than 40 minutes to charge the whole thing which would last 9 to 10 hours on normal use. That was the one thing about the xoom that was positively good.
So far I have had the tab charging for hours and it's still not full. I plugged it in at 8:14 with the battery at 8%, now its 11:44 and its still only at 74%. That's more than 3 hours and its not full. I think I remember reading that the battery is bigger and last up to 15 hours. If all that's true I can understand longer charge time but 4 hours is alot. Is this normal?
And how long does the battery really last? Does it really get 15 hours? That would be nice.

The battery is 7000 mAh, it takes me an average of 5 - 6 hours to charge depending how low I let the battery go.
Battery life on the tablet is great, sometimes I can go for 3 - 4 days on a single charge, sometimes a single day, it really depends how much I've used the tablet.
I also had the xoom for close to 3 months, and the xoom's battery not only charges considerably faster but I also feel that it last longer also than the 10.1, just something you will get use to.
Damn, I am really loving this tablet. Its SO much better than Motorola's crap. But I don't know if I can adjust to this battery. I can't leave it plugged in all day cause that defeats the purpose of having a light weight portable device. I guess ill have to see how it holds up after a full day of usage.

You all with battery charge time issues, why don't you guys put it in charge while you go to sleep, that way you'll have a fully charged tablet throughout the day. Until you guys are not sleeping in the night time or anytime in a 24 hours day.

I charge it every 3-4 days, and I leave it overnight. I have no issues with the charging. The battery life is actually quite awesome.
My only complaint is idle-time battery life. If I leave it turned-on, but asleep, I find battery will discharge in ~2 days. That's not what I expected from the device while it basically sleeping!
Maybe poor app management on my part, I dunno.

Yeah I think it lasts longer also, but that part doesn't bother me so much. Its the charge time which kills me! 40 mins vs. 5+ hours is crazy. I am having a hard time adjusting ...
I do proof reading on the tab so I use it alot and when its plugged in it is very ergonomically unfriendly due to being tied down to a very short yet intrusive cable. Anyway, just a compromise I wasn't aware of.

The Samsung definitely doesn't rapid charge like the xoom, but it lasts all day and I greatly prefer usb charging options. At least I can use the Sammy charger for other stuff.
Well I'm glad I didn't get rid of my Xoom and get the 10.1 like I was planning on.I will wait on October when Asus brings out their new tablet with Kal-el processor.

Yeah, I never use it while it's plugged in, the cord is way too short unless you have an outlet right on your desktop
Sent from my PG86100 using XDA Premium App
10 feet cords on ebay for $3-4. Solves that issue. It sounds like you are complaining about the tab being plugged in to charge, and which is a silly thing to complain about. You say you are proofreading? You need to be on the move while doing so? Remember to charge your tab at night and you won't have issues. Don't bash our tab because you forgot to charge.
Sent from my Galaxy Tab 10.1 using the XDA Premium App
Agreed. USB extender cables work fine. In fact, splitters work too
I don't mean to start an argument with you but some of your reasoning is a bit skewed. First of all to say "our tab" (as if it's some fanboy fraternity is just silly) includes me as well because I also own one that I purchased with my own money. Secondly, I am not bashing it. I was originally asking a question to see if mine was performing normally then I stated how this is an inconveniance for me. Thirdly, customers are fully entitled to review their purchases and express their feelings and experience. This is how products IMPROVE. If every company could depend on foolish non-critical fanboy psychology to sell products, people like you would be paying twice as much for a product half as good.
To take issue with the way I use my tablet because I find a 5+ hour charging time an inconvenience on a mobile device is stupid. If you must know, I am proofreading in my spare time and help take care of my sick mother. I have to potentially be up at all hours and change my location frequently. And yes, to have to plug in a short and obtrusive cable for hours on end everywhere I go is an inconvenience. Neither did I criticize Samsung or your (or should I say "our" ) beloved tablet. I just stated the awkwardness and undesirability of the charge time.
If you need all other people to be unconditionally fanatic about some product so that you yourself can appreciate it, I think it has less to do with the actual product than some sociological mental issue.
Anyway I started writing with the intention of just mentioning the importance and value of being "objective" and I wanted to avoid coming across as a ****. I know... I know...

Completely dead, never. but I have gotten it down under 14%. At that point, I just plugged it in until it was back to 100%.
I have drained it completely maybe 3 times. Once playing dead trigger. I had the N7 plugged into my laptop but it was draining faster than the laptop was charging. Drained it a second time watching movies on a trip. I have drained it completely one or two other times but those are the 2 that come to mind.
drained it the first day and charging when it's around 10% now. nice battery life.
Lowest for me has been around 5%, although I will be going on a trip soon - I hope the powerbrick I have will help it survive!
Nope. Had it down to about 30% after 3 days of use. Was about to complain about battery life, then remembered that it had already had 3 days of use
I don't think mines been lower than 15%, I usually charge it every evening so most of the time it's around 40%-50% left.
I have let it shut down with low battery about a dozen times already
What are your opinions on this? Is doing it bad or good for the battery??
Thanks
I don't let it get that low, and with these batteries, there is no "memory" to worry about when charging... that has not been an issue since Ni-Cad batteries, which have never been used in tablets, and have not been used in phones for like 15 years...

To all those with lousy battery times!

I have a year old Note and have been getting progressively lower battery times, I have tried every possible trick and several ROMS. Recently was getting as low as 12hrs. I have had a cheap replacement battery (non Samsung) which was not used often. Recently when I used it I noticed about the same battery life as the original. I purchased a new Samsung battery and now I am getting over 40hrs on one charge with moderate use and sync on with no other changes.
My messge is : change your battery at least every 8-10 months, you will be astonished as I was. One of the great features of the Note is the ease of change of battery, use it!
Yep same for new battery and it's like I have a new phone. Without changing anything my screen on time almost double.

I've been doing that for over a decade now but this time i bight a hyperion aftermarket.
I bought two actually. I keep one in my car. This way I'm guaranteed a full day's worth of heavy usage.
Also got the dock + second battery charger.
I'll never get a mobile without the ability to replace the battery.
Screw the new HTC devices.

i don't have the time to order a new battery online or look for it in stores so simply i swap out the kernel for the rom i'm using and with the current one i get about 20hrs which isn't much compared to when i got it a couple months ago and worse yet if you have on hsdpa+ whole day battery life drops to about 2/3
After one year (for me ten months) the note 1 needs a new battery. Decreasing bat life, random restarts, and screen flickering are all indicators. I thought i had runaway process issue or hardware problem. But i finally ordered an ankor battery from Amazon and my unit is fine andback to 20hrs.
I thought this was settled back in Nov.
Now just waiting for my jb!

Do not buy a spare the time time as the phone if you are not going to use it until the original goes as it will deteriorate from the day it's made, even with out use.

This is a common misconception that if you leave the battery to almost deplete every time it will be better for it in he long run. I have done a lot of research on this topic for laptops and smartphones. Essentially they use the same type of battery technology which does not suffer from memory effect, but if you stress the battery a lot (letting it deplete before you charge it again or almost deplete below 5%) than it will damage it more quickly.
The optimal way of charging your battery is:
1) After the first cycles just charge it whenever you want (even it is at 70% and you are at work, you can plug it to get another 10% and then unplug and use)
2) Don't let it deplete, it will stress the battery too much and damage it in the long run
3) Every 30 cycles, you can let it discharge to below 5% and let it recharge until 100%
I have done this on my PC which still has its battery at above 80% after almost 3 years, and to some extent on my Note, but as I can't always foresee how things will play out I sometimes need to use to until the last drop of energy .
Hope this info helps.

That is definitely battery drain. Better post a screen of the battery your apps are using...
With a brand new battery, you cannot achieve much more than 5 hours of screen on time with general usage.
You can indeed get much more than that when watching video, but that is the only scenario where that is possible (or maybe staring at a black picture for hours).
So people saying that they get 10 to 12 hours of screen on time are really getting 10 to 12 hours of uptime, meaning the phone is turned on but is sleeping most of the time, with maybe 2 to 3 hours of screen on time.
That's lousy battery life, and those people should buy a new battery.

[GUIDE] Preserving Battery Life

This is particularly true for those who are un-rooted and on Stock where wiping battery stats is not available.
I bought my N4 on 1st of Feb, and the first two charge cycles, when the phone powered off due to the OS reporting the battery at 0%, I was unable to power it back on. This is great, as the phone battery is truly empty!
Some charge cycles later, my phone would power off due to the OS reporting 0% - however, I would feel as though the battery didn't last as long as I was used to.
So to make sure the battery is truly dead... I boot into fastboot mode by pressing Volume Down and Power on straight after it shut itself down. The phone stayed on for a further 27mins, bearing in mind that in this mode, the screen is on full brightness and always on. 27mins of screen on time for a phone that manages only about 4hrs of screen on time at best, is a considerable amount of left over juice in the battery that the OS is missing out on.
Normally to correct this, we charge up to 100% and wipe battery stats in CWM.
[GUIDE]
I have found that to leave the phone on in fastboot mode until it drains the battery out completely, plug in your charger, then boot into Android, would show the battery at 0% - this is a TRUE 0%... charge it all the way up to 100% and you should have back your full battery performance. Don't forget to allow the 99% - 100% time. This is very important - It will make it to 100% eventually, be patient.
This is all based on my assumptions/guestimates/theory - please do comment and correct if you are the wiser. [though for now, it works flawlessly]
OT - This does highlight a flaw in the OS however, it's a problem with all Android devices, will they ever fix it?
You're just calibrating the battery. I'm sure most of us already let it die without needing t enter fast boot.

Also, you should not drain it to such an extent. If a battery ever reaches true zero, it won't turn on again or charge. The phone turns off (says zero) around an actual 5% because they don't want you to destroy your battery

I guess I wasnt clear or there was a misunderstanding... I let it die, reaches 0% and starts to power off, I then boot it into fast boot mode, and find the battery with at least another 30mins of screen on time. This extra battery is what I'm trying to calibrate back into the OS stats.

Good observation, always worthwhile hearing other opinions. I would say though, that 30mins of screen on time would be more than 5%.
I'm in my experience, the phone was fully dead after leaving it on in fastboot mode, battery all out. Then I plugged it into the charger, I got a flashing red light, and then the battery charge icon appeared. I then booted up and the OS reported a true 0%. This charge cycle, since I did this I'm at 28hrs with 20% to go with everything on [Wifi etc]
But so far, it's been a great way to get the most out of the battery.... lets get some more opinions, good or bad..
All thoughts welcome!
The flaw in this argument is that wiping battery stats in recovery does absolutely nothing.

You can't drain the battery fully when its on because the device has protection against draining the battery to a point which will damage it. In fast boot this control is not in place.
Is this worth doing? No. Our battery aren't replaceable and shortening its life to gain 5% is not worth it.

As skeptical as we can be, a lot of things can affect battery life so the extra 30mins could come from a number of factors.

Because it takes much less battery on fastboot mode? Radios don't need to be on , brightness is minimal, only 1 CPU runs at lowest frequency, flash memory is not powered on?
To have a logical argument here, we must know how long fully charged battery lasts under fastboot.
And in agreement with many other voices, I don't think draining battery obove manufacturer threshold is a brilliant idea.

Battery issue?

Just purchased myself a second hand S4 and it is a very good device, however whenever I charge to 100% once I take off the charger it goes to 99% within a few seconds and I do not have the data on or using any application. Is it normal or is it time to purchase a new battery?
I heard that turning off features like airview and airgesture can save some juice and also prevent the phone from heating.

When I turn on the data I lose 1% for every one or two minutes. At night when I sleep the phone loses only 5 to 6 % within eight hours. Seems acceptable to me
As long as you're happy with it, it should be ok. If not, change the battery. But it's not always the battery. Sometimes it's the ROM or kernel or other things.
Just got myself an S4 again, the first few days, it was getting very hot and seemed laggy, the battery was draining from 100% to 50% in about 1.5 hours of hardly any use, but it was charging extremely quickly or so its seemed, this one is running official 5.0.1.
So I took the battery out and it was excessively hot and i noticed it had a slight bulge in the centre, did the spin test on a flat surface and it span like a spinning top.
So bought myself another Samsung battery, now over the last few days the phone has hardly heated up and seems to be running so much smoother, battery is very stable in standby mode, still drains quite fast, but no where near as fast as on the old battery, may take a few more days to settle in i guess.
Is it true that one should not only change get the battery when less than 40% or else it will have a bad effect on the battery. I usually keep it on the charger most of the time.

Not sure about current cell phone batteries but my laptop battery died after running pretty much 24/7 on AC power. 1 year later it was so dead it didn't have juice to boot into desktop when not on AC - died just after passing bios tests.
I would say memory effect after not full charge is less severe than killing it completely by keeping it on wall socket most of the time

You'd think that laptops would have some sort of charge limiters, by now, that prevents the battery from overcharging.
For stock ROM after charging the phone to 100% .. please don't unplug ..tickle charge still happens .. turn off the screen and wait till LED notification light turns green from red.. only then unplug the charger ..
