Intro
Hello there people, I decided that I/we should have a topic specially for those who want to buy the Xperia Z or want to know certain things.
The forum (Xperia Z section) will grow and grow because more and more people will buy the phone and many of them will have the same questions, so to prevent them for making the same topic over and over, they can find their answers in here.
I'm just going to make a q&a( question and answer) list so that some things can be cleared up for the people that are still in doubt.
Everyone is free to post some questions (and answers) in this topic, I will edit them in the first post.
Hardware Q&A
Software Q&A
Accessories, Etc Q&A
Hardware Q&A
Q: Is the Xperia Z water resistant or water proof?
A: The phone is water proof, you can hold it under water (1 meter/ +- 3feet) for 30minutes.
Although its not advised that you hold the phone in water that contains acids like sea water which contains salt.
Q: Does the touch screen still works while it's under water?
A: The touch screen doesn't work while the phone is fully under water, so the touch screen will work while you're taking a shower, as long as there aren't too many drops on the screen. The screen itself will keep working so watching a movie for example shouldn't be a problem.
Q: Does the phone support 64gb cards?
A: Yes it does [Confirmed] (Thanks to: hush66 )
Source: Click!
Q: Does the phone have a notification led?
A: Yes, in the upper right corner. "It works for notifications (SMS, Whatsapp, etc) as well as charging indicator."[Confirmed] (Thanks to: hush66 )
Q: Does this phone support 4g?
A: Yes it does [Confirmed]
Version C6603 supports 4G LTE
Version C6602 HSPA+ only (Thanks to: SmallsXD)
Q: What LTE bands are supported?
A: LTE 800 / 850 / 900 / 1800 / 2100 / 2600 - C6603 (Bands 1, 3, 5, 7, 8, 20 (Depends on your country))
Q: Is it possible to disable the LTE option to save battery? (Question by: Flaaamp)
A: Yes you can disable LTE(But if it will save some battery life is debatable) (Thanks to: xiFIL )
Q: How many mega pixels does the camera has?
A: 13.1 Mega pixels, but when using the superior auto mode you can only use 12 mega pixels(Thanks to: hush66 /xiFIL )
Q: What is the capacity of the battery?
A: 2330mAh
Q: Is the battery removable??
A: No it's not It's said that Sony will replace your battery for you for free.
Q: The display isn't IPS right?
A: Yes it is! For more details see the specific topic: Click

Q: Does the phone have a dedicated camera button?(Question by: jacksonj51)
A: No it does not.(The Xperia ZL does though)
Q: HELP!! My speaker volume is low after I put the phone in water
A: That's normal, it's advised to let the speaker dry for about 1-3 hours before it returns back to normal.
Note: I will add a lot more questions AND answers later.
If someone has the answer to one of the questions, you're welcome to post them of course!

Software Q&A
Q: Will this phone get an update to Android 5??
A: Time will tell (Or Sony)
Q: Can you use secret codes like: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=20750699&postcount=72 ???
A:Yes the secret codes work, but they are phone specific. So for example secret codes for the Xperia T might not work for the Xperia Z. (Thanks to: hush66 )
Q: What is stamina mode?
A: "With Battery STAMINA Mode you have more intelligent battery management and can easily improve your standby time by four times or more. Your phone knows when you’re screen is off and shuts down the battery-draining apps you don’t need, then starts them up again when the screen is back on."
Q: Can you change the screen settings? (e.g. Contrast) (Question by: Gitaroo)
A: "The Xperia Z/ZL has a White Balance setting. Not contrast/brightness, but saturation/hue" (Thanks to: REAVER117)
Q: What is the superior auto mode?
A: "Superior auto mode shoots multiple shots of the same scene in rapid sequence. It then creates the best single picture as a composite."(Thanks to: grtmoby )
Q: I lost the preinstalled photo's/videos, how can I get them back?
A: You can get them back by downloading these files:
Photo's: http://www.mediafire.com/?h0d300bpep95jps

Q: How do I reboot the phone?
A: Hold the power button and the volume up button for a few seconds.
Q: My notification LED doesn't work... how can I fix this?
A: Many people fixed the issue by doing a factory reset: Settings > Backup & reset.
Mine worked after I did a factory reset twice, after you did a factory reset during the setup don't sync the phone. Install all your apps first and set up your wifi manually, after you did that you can turn on sync.
Q: Can I use the volume/power button(s) to make a picture?
A: By default you can't, but you can use 3rd party apps to map your buttons to do so.
Here are 2 apps that can do so:
CameraPro
Camera ZOOOM fx

Accessories, Etc Q&A
Q: Since the phone is water proof how will the warranty system work?
A:
Q: Is there a dock included when I buy the phone?
A: Depends on the country you order it from
Q: Why do so many people want the dock?
A: The main reason why most people want the dock is to prevent opening opening the flaps each time.(Opening the flaps too many times might decrease the water resistance)
Q: Oleophobic coating? What's that?
A: Source: Wikipedia. A lipophobic coating is used on the touchscreens of Apple's iPhones since the 3GS, their iPads, Nokia's N9 and Lumia devices, various Samsung phones such as the Google Nexus S and Galaxy Nexus, the HTC HD2, Hero and Flyer and many other phones to repel fingerprint oil, which aids in preventing and cleaning fingerprint marks.
Q: So does this phone have oleophobic coating?
A: The screen protector which comes with the phone does, the glass screen itself doesn't. (Still needs to be confirmed)
Q: I heard the phone already comes with a screenprotector?
A: Yes the phone comes with a shatter-proof protector.
Q: Why is that?
A: To prevent the screen from breaking into pieces when it falls.
Q: Should I remove it?
A: Sony advices against removing the protector. They advice you to install another protector over the Shatter-proof sheet.
Please note that when you decide to remove the protector, you will also lose the Sony logo on the front of the screen.
Q: Can anyone explain to me why Xperia Z is waterproof for only up to 30 minutes? I mean, if it can be in water for 30 minutes without any damage, why can't it be more? What happens after 30 minutes?(Question by: xx77aBs)
A: "It will likely survive beyond 30 minutes, but the level 7 liquid IP tests only certify to 30min for 1m submersion. I think the 30min time is just stated due to the certification." (Thanks to: flamingsamurai)

Q: Does the phone support 64gb cards?
A: (Still needs to be confirmed)
I can confirm that it does.
Q: Does the phone have a notification led?
A: Yes[Confirmed] (Upper right side of the phone??)
Yes, it's on the top right. It works for notifications (SMS, Whatsapp, etc) as well as charging indicator.
Q: Can you use secret codes like: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=20750699&postcount=72 ???
A:
Those are Galaxy codes, not Xperia ones. So most of them won't work. Anyways, I can confirm that the Xperia service menu code (*#* #7378423#*#*) works. IMEI number code (*#06#) works as well.

does the final version has the option that let you tweak the screen contrast, hue etc?

Updated the first post, thanks for the question, also added it.
Thanks to hush66 and SmallsXD for the answers, added them in the first post.:good:

The Xperia Z/ZL has a White Balance setting. Not contrast/brightness, but saturation/hue.

True. Looking at the kernel sources seems like gamma, contrast, sharpness is hardcoded in the display's driver. It can be adjusted but you need to do it by precompiling your own kernel.

Updated topic with some more questions and answers:good:

Rooting?
I have some questions about rooting, if anyone could help (complete Android noob, never used it before) it would hugely appreciated.
1) As I understand it, Sony is very helpful for this sort of thing, but if I were to root it (which I have never done), and bricked it, would I be able to unbrick it?
2) If I can't unbrick it, can Sony repair it for me, and will it be free if in warranty?
3) If I buy a 32GB microSD card, would I be able to play games off it, or would they have to be on the internal memory?
4) If I root, does it voids my warranty permanently, can Sony find out if I have?
5) Can I unroot it should anything happen, and unvoid the warranty?
6) Do I have to root to apply a custom ROM like CM10?
7) Would it be worth rooting to get the complete stock Android experience?
8) Would the UK version of the XZ come with a locked bootloader, and if so do I have to unlock it to root, and would that void my warranty?
9) If the bootloader is unlocked, do I need to root to get a custom ROM?
10) Do I need to root in order to get a GBA emulator on it?
Thanks so much, complete Android noob here, as said previously, really anxious that I'll ruin my first big purchase.

Can someone confirm which version has the dedicated camera button please

In most cases you would be able to unbrick it by for example just re-flashing your/a ROM (ROM = CM/ParanDroid etc..)

Sony can fix everything, but the chance is 99% that you need to pay if they find out it's because of root.

Yes you are able to unroot and most of the times you should be able to hide that you ever rooted the device.

Uhm a bit tricky question. But I do think that you need root when you use CWM(ClockworkMod Recovery) to flash your device. I don't think you need root when you use Odin.(Not sure about Mobile Odin)

Hmmmmm, that's not really a question I can answer. (But when you're a complete Android "noob"). You don't really need the root. Although some programs require a rooted device.

Using Note without rooting or custom ROMs

Would you see any problem with me using the international version of the Note without rooting or using custom ROMs? Are there any annoyances you're experiencing with the stock ROM? Will Samsung actually update this device for atleast a year? My U.S. Samsung devices never got updates, but that might've been mostly the carrier's fault
Unrooted note?
I haven't rooted my note yet, and I don't have any complaints. To be honest, I really don't see a reason to root it, at least not until a functional ICS ROM is available for it. As for the updates, the main update we're looking for is ICS which I'm hearing may not be available until April though.
Ive not rooted my international Note either.
Love it!
Sent from my GT-N7000 using XDA App
I've rooted mine only... but to be honest I only did it out of habit.
I don't think I've actually used root for anything and will only use it to install ICS if CM9 hits before the samsung release.
I'm only rooted. Nothing more.

I'm just rooted and CWM'd... Until either a semi-stable full featured CM7 port comes out, or even better, a CM9 port, I can tough it out waiting. One thing is for sure though.
I WILL GET TOUCHWIZ OFF THIS DEVICE ONE WAY OR ANOTHER.
It's slow, it's laggy, the home button takes a CRIMINALLY long time to return to my homescreen from just about every app... it's the worst.
Samsung Galaxy NoteNexus. That'll do =)
Same here , didn't root it yet and loving it but would definitely would root it to tell the difference in two....
Sent from my GT-N7000 using xda premium
I haven't rooted it yet. I see no point. I used to root for taking snapshot in previous Androids. With GS2, I rooted to install few custom fonts. The only reason if I will ever need to root Note would be to install AdFree but screen is so big I don't mind few space taken away by ad and morally if I am using free version, developer should earn something from ads.
I didn't find a reason to root it either,I usually do it to install the Armenian fonts but the GNote came already installed.
The unit I have is fast and no lags so no worries in that front either.
I have rooted neither. I would only consider when stop getting OS upgrade. I will wait for ICS till then have enough to enjoy.

I agree, that lag sucks!
The lag is caused by voice control. Voice control is activated by pressing the home button twice, so when you hit it once the phone waits awhile to see if you're going to hit it again.
I rooted though I told myself not to...I'm just hooked to it!
Seriously, I like freezing the bloatware and deleting stuff that take up unncessary space and also cause my phone to slow down. With ICS, I believe one can just delete the apps without rooting, which will be great.
Based on my experience with the Galaxy S and S2, ROMs are just not worth the effort for me, except for the very lightweight ones that are deodexed and not much more.
I believe you can use the phone unrooted, unless you have itchy fingers like me.
I am Rooted, as you know second most reading thread 'How to Root' i hav wrote, n i cant stop myself unrooted. But really i can say some must things you can define 'need' are such
- To use Titanium Backup(really itz boring jobe to restore all application n setting withot it)
- If your place dont support Google Navigation
- Use set CPU (really battery sucks without this
- N atleast for me 'Root call blocker'
More thn this i dont think any must use for root.
Even myself have wrote thread how to, but i hav not pushed CF root till to my device
Incidentally if you use the superoneclick method of rooting there is an "unroot" feature built in as well.
Sent from my GT-N7000 using Tapatalk
I just singleclick rooted, so I could backup and freeze apps. None of the custom roms interest me yet.. Haven't installed cwr either.
Freezing voice control gets rid of the home button lag, good advice!!

Dr Ketan,
Can you please elaborate on the following points:
1. "If your place dont support Google Navigation"
How does rooting your phone help getting Google Navigation to work? Navigation does not work in my area, so would be good if you could share some tips.
2. "Use set CPU (really battery sucks without this)"
Are you under clocking the CPU in order to get better battery life? Can you give more details on this? Won't this make the phone more laggy?

I've rooted mine, but have not loaded a custom ROM. The main reason for rooting is for running ClockSync, Titanium Backup Pro and Theft Aware (now Avast).
Rooted.
So I can use Chainfire 3D for a night mode.

I understand there is a method by loading a modified Google Maps / Navigation APK that removes the unsupported location message. I had a brief look at the process and seemes a little complicated and I just use NDrive.

No. I was very skeptical at first about this, but I have run SetCPU on my Galaxy SII to test and performance was great and it seemed that battery life was also no problem. I installed SetCPU on my Note soon after I rooted it and have felt no performance decrease. SetCPU has a "ondemand" setting, this will change the speed of the CPU according to the needs of the apps running. Much like the SpeedStep technology found in laptops.
SetCPU has a nice info display and it shows the "Time in State" from this you can see what time your CPU is spending at each MHz increment. It stands to reason if 80% of the time the CPU is running at 200 MHz it's using less than running at 1400 MHz.
I've included a screen cap of the Time in State display from my note.

Yes sure i will guide, how you can activate google navigation in india
First Download this
Now you have req Root, and Root explorer app, b'coz you have to remove maps.apk app from Sys/apk directory, and replaced with above said application.
Anyway there is still one method, which doesn't require root, but you wil get double icon each fr lattitude, map, navigation etc(with minor difference)
if you need navigation in india then you can use that modified version of map. I mean new modified version which allow you to use navigation will install along with original map.
for this download this, and simply install like other application.
Now regarding Set CPU, i think somone hav already answered n explined nicely.
After installing SEtCPU, you will get control over CPU speed(directly affect battery performance)
e.g. If you add profile when screen is off, CPU set to 500 mH. then definetely your battery drain diminished < 1%/hr in idle state(screen off) compare to > 2 % with 3G n Data on idle state
There won't be lag issue b'coz you are under clocking in off screen state only.

* All samsung android device comes with lcd test menu in order to check the basic functionality of the mobile and it is also useful to check the tint issues
* Enter the dialer and input the following code "*#0*#, it will give you a set of options to test the mobile.
* The same lcd test menu can be used for testing the tint issues, the main menu of the lcd test should look white rather than pinkish white or warmer white. you can either decide it yourself by your eyes or compare it with another AMOLED screen.
* Black dots are present on almost all AMOLED panels with varying intensity. Its not an issue. But if you still want to check for lesser dots take your mobile to pitch dark environment and load a complete black wallpaper, once your eyes get setlled to the environment look over the scrren. you will notice those spots.

Poor battery life is due to one of the following reasons
> keeping all the features on like wifi ,bluetooth, nfc, full brightness etc.
Solution:
Turn off all the unwanted features and set the brighness between 0 to 50 %
> Wakelocks are common in android, A wakelock is an event witch disturbs the cpu(waking the cpu) from a regular deep sleep when the device is not in use. Commonly wakelocks are caused by frequent syncing of data with apps like twitter, facebook etc.
look over the image below
The blue line rounded with circle denotes wakelock(though a few lines like the one shown in the above pic can be ignored) , the intensity of wakelocks varies depending upon the usage/settings. The best way to get rid of wakelocks is to use apps like "better battery stats" and "gsam battery monitor" to identify the app causing wakelocks and disable/tweak them.
Some Android Basics
Though many of you people here are not new to android, below are the details for android newbies
Read through these links and you will get a basic idea of all the modding/flashing stuffs
1.some basic android terms
Android provides much better customization than many other competing platforms, basically a customization is nothing but altering/tinkering the mobile according to the taste of the induvidual. It may be the look of the mobile, speed of the mobile or whatever it may be they can be customized
Customizing the mobile includes.
1.Rooting
2.Flashing Roms/kernels
3.Mods
Rooting:
A process allowing users of mobile phones running the Android operating system to attain privileged control (known as "root access") within Android's subsystem. Rooting is often performed with the goal of overcoming limitations that carriers and hardware manufacturers put on some devices, resulting in the ability to alter or replace system applications and settings, run specialized apps that require administrator-level permissions, or perform other operations that are otherwise inaccessible to a normal Android user.
You can root your mobile simply by following this thread. Download the cf root from the same thread and flash it via odin. A separate how to root guide is here
Flashing:
Flashing is nothing but a method of installing/updating a ROM/KERNEL/MOD. Generally flashing is of 2 types.
* flash via odin
Odin is a software used in windows for flashing. Odin supports flashing of *.tar,*.md5(commonly used file formats). All the stock roms can be flashed only via odin. Kernels of tar format can also be flashed via odin.
This thread will give you all the details about how to use odin and the thread also has the collection of stock roms.
* flashing via cwm
cwm aka Clock Work Mod is one of the must have thing for a rooted user. Every android mobile comes with a recovery feature in order to troubleshoot if things goes wrong. CWM replaces the the basic recovery with advanced recovery features. CWM supports flashing files as zips. All the custom roms are generally flashed via cwm. Along with custom roms mods/themes are also flshed via cwm.
This thread will give you all the details about cwm and how to use it
Mods
Mods are nothing but tweaked apps/settings that enhances the functionality of the mobile. These mods can be flashed via cwm or can be copied manually via root explorer (for advanced users)
Voiding the warranty and rooting/customiztion
Rooting the mobile will void your manufacturer warranty. But at the same time wasting a powerhouse mobile like s3 without modding is mere waste So whats the solution??? Whenever you are in need of claiming your warranty there are methods to remove the root which in turn covers your mobile under warranty. Yet another thing you people have to know is galaxy s3 has a binary counter which counts the number of unofficial flashes (rooting, flashing cwm comes under flashing ). So if the counter is above 0 it will void your warranty again. A big thanks to "chainfire" for creating an app called "triangle away" which simply resets the binary counter to zero.
So if you people want to remove root for warranty purpose
1.install triangle away and reset the counter
2.enter cwm and factory reset the mobile.
3.put the mobile into download mode and flash the stock rom from the links given above .
Here are a few samsung secret codes you can play up with Thanks to anil84 for bringing this up ...

Backup your efs folder!
The first thing you people have to do before flashing any kind of things to your mobile is to "backup EFS folder".
What is efs?
The "\EFS" folder in the root directory is responsible for storing your IMEI number. The folder may get messed up when flashing roms or any other thing which results in loss of IMEI which in turn results in "no signals!!". It is hard to recover IMEI once it is lost, sometime you may even need to change the whole motherboard.
But........... do not worry...!! this can be easily resolved by backing up the "EFS" folder.
Head over here, download the tool, backup the folder and keep it safe in your pc

Is it worth rooting the Nexus 4?

I don't understand what's so good about it? I know there's custom roms but how MUCH better is it REALLY? I'm debating if I should root my phone but I don't want to break it :[
*shrug*
I know some people will say that the Nexus 4 is for developers and you should experiment with custom ROMs/Kernels because that's what it's meant for..
But for me, the stock Android experience is completely fine with me, I actually prefer it. I find no reason to root my phone, although it will not "hurt" your phone per se. Just read and get familiar with ADB you'll be fine.
Oh and FYI I've rooted every other device I've owned, ran CM & other ROMs and I think they're cool and all but for me, nothing compares to stock 4.2.2
Just my two cents.
stock is definitely good.
I just like the options and other features you get in other roms. Like the ability to change the colour of navbar/statusbar.

If you have to ask this question then no, you probably haven't got sufficient reason to root. I would have been perfectly happy on stock but I'm far more happy with PA, it gives so much more freedom. I've made the nav bar shorter, the quick toggles the notification tray better, set certain apps to open in expanded desktop mode by default and installed an adblock. For me, that's enough reason to root and ROM the phone. Using my friend's stock N4 feels weird in comparison (especially true about the nav bar).

I flashed my galaxy s near a thousand times in 2 years and around 50 times with my nexus 4 with no brick/breaking it.
The feature I love the most about root is using AdAway https://code.google.com/p/ad-away/ so I have no ads on my apps therefore no battery drain (http://www.cbc.ca/news/technology/story/2012/03/20/technology-free-apps-ads-battery.html) or annoying ads.
And you can root your phone without flashing a new rom but new rom gets you better performances and cool improvements like thoses (for more information about the changes you can find most answers on google :

Its actually pretty difficult to brick a nexus device, and the unlocking/flashing recovery procedure is extremely easy.
Theres very little risk. If you can read instructions you will be fine.
Stock is great but this phone, like any Android phone IMO needs root for full potential.
-Sent from Marino's Maxx-
stock is great and tons of people will be more than fulfilled and happy with just stock, but rooting gives you full control like all the root apps, ROMs, Kernels, Nandroid backup, and at anytime you can easily switch back to stock. Very easy to root a Nexus device too
I was very happy with stock. But the temptation and the curiosity ended up forcing me to root. As long as you do your homework by reading forums and also using youtube as a guidance, your good.
anyone can recommend any vids to root android 4.2 or any informational things i can read to start it then?

my two cents... you wont break it from rooting it. you have a much better chance of dropping it and that will or at least could.
my nexus, my love was in my hand and I tripped real good on a stump in a parking lot at night, I know what is a stump doing there? and it went flying face first onto the concrete and not a scratch. however there was a very tiny chip on the edge of the glass but you cant see it unless you look right at it for a second.
anyway these devices are great. I want a 16 cored nexus next Im waiting to root that and OC it.
Pa Color Splasher makes your phone look really cool , like on Google now the Nav & status bar turn the black to white to match the app

yes man! it worths it a lot! you mustnt have fear! our nexus can restore easily.
if you dont feel you to do it now , look for tutorials on youtube about it , for example wugfresh it's highly recommended.
just be careful at the moment you flash a kernel or something different it must be from Nexus 4 ALWAYS .
dont mistake with galaxy nexus, nexus s etc.

Jailbreaking uses exploits to install unofficial system software on an ios device, which Apple patches with each update. We aren't exploiting anything here, so the process doesn't change across os version or device.

Help me to FINALLY start using my Z3C after 10 weeks of fear!

I bought my Z3C 10 weeks ago and still haven't used it other than turning it on for a few minutes etc. I charged it for the first time yesterday and am now ready to start! I had been waiting in the hope that CM11/12 would come to it, but I think it's time to forget about that happening and just start using it.
I'm pretty ignorant of all tech things so would really appreciate any help in being able to achieve the following with it:
Rooted
Free of bloatware
updateable OTA
simple android launcher
all the while without losing quality of camera etc..
I've been suggested just using google now launcher and disabling apps and I've been suggested XPOSED and I've been suggested AOSP and I'm a little confused as to what to go for. I see FXP just posted this: http://fxpblog.co/releases/aosp-lollipop-release-from-fxp-just-in-time-for-christmas/
But I'm not even too sure if that meets my criteria?
It's a phone used 99% for business and once I set it up once, I want that to be it and don't want to be reinstalling ROMS etc. I'd like whatever I do now, to last me until I get rid of the phone in maybe 2 years time as I can't have any downtime (which is why I've chosen the Christmas holidays to migrate from my current phone to the Z3C too )
If anyone could please please advise I'd really appreciate it and you'd be greatly helping me!
Why root it at all?
There's hardly any bloat, and what there is van be disabled.
Adblock plus works for both 3g and wifi almost as well as a adaway.
Install Nova launcher and you are done.

Its impossible to root without losing camera quality. Why would you even want to? Its a stable clean rom they have on there and the extra's baked in are only useful. Just delete all the crap apps, possible with my T-Mobile version (Netherlands) and just keep some of the sony stuff. The walkman app is my default music player since it supports folder playing.
Seriously just use the phone its a quality product.
Thanks a lot for the replies folks, really appreciate it, especially Christmas morning
The reason I wanted to root, is just to have it open for anything that might need root access in the coming 2 years or so of use. I think there's a few apps I have on my Motorolla RAZR-I XT890 (phone I've been using for the last 1.5/2 years) which need root access:
AdAway (if adblock plus does the same job then that should be fine, but I listen to music a lot on youtube and don't want ads there if possible)
Auto Ring (I THINK this needs root access, it's an app that lets you white list certain numbers/contacts so that if your phone is on silent, it still rings - pretty important for me)
InCall Recorder (again I THINK it needs root, it can record calls internally, not using the microphone like most of these apps do - actually, it's never worked properly on my Razr-I, but I'd like to have it there)
Root Explorer (think it needs root, I use this to disable apps, replace default launcher etc, maybe it's not necessary anymore?)
I'm happy to replace all the above but I also use:
CERBERUS - This needs Root access to be hidden from the app drawer, I'm not sure if it needs it for other functions too, but this is very important.
I've a very specific list of apps I use for my phone, k9 mail, dialer one, jorte calendar and widgetsoid, I'm sure these will all still work fine and if the camera will instantly lose quality and ability on a root, I'd prefer to avoid it if possible?
One important thing to note by the way... Before I've had to hire an android expert to set my phone up for me to root it, install a rom etc. I don't like to mess around with things I'm not familiar with and prefer to pay someone who is guaranteed to do it right, rather than researching for hours how to do it, so I'd be looking for the same this time if I'm going down the root route, but if that's not necessary, that could be even easier!
Cerberus doesn't need root to be hidden!
Sent from my iPhone 5S
Oh really? So maybe I'd actually get away without rooting so? What are the main reasons to root so?

Honestly, despite feeling like I needed to root my previous N4, I haven't found the need to root this phone. In terms of what I want, there's really nothing pressing that outweighs the loss of camera functionality, etc. In fact, there were a bunch of things that I expected would need root that actually didn't.
The back button on PieControl works with accessibility and doesn't actually need root any more, which was my major worry. My airplane mode and GPS Power Toggles don't work, but those are easily accessible in the editable Quick Settings dropdown. Cerberus is hidden from the app drawer, though it isn't installed as a system app. My Tasker stuff that deals with music toggle pause/next/back works if I use the shell command to input keyevents (despite all documentation saying that should only work with a rooted phone). The computer app lets you do backups and restores, so you don't need nandroid backups, and Titanium Backup is not as big a deal for me, despite its utility for rolling back app upgrades. There is some stuff Secure Settings can't do, like turn the pattern lock on or off, but that's probably the only one I care about, and once L rolls in a month or so, I think that should be taken care of.
Thanks a lot for the comprehensive reply. If there was one place I thought I'd be getting people telling me I should root and do this and that to the phone, XDA would be it, given the responses so far, I guess I'm better off just leaving well alone then? It's good that cerberus is hidden from the app drawer, but you just reminded me of the more important root required install to system app ability. I guess as long as my phone doesn't fall into the hands of a professional phone thief who can clear cerberus with ease, I might be ok though?
Everything else I'll hopefully get by with too, but I'd really prefer youtube without ads!
So given that I might just leave well alone and start using it... How can I just start fresh now? Maybe a factory reset (even though I haven't used the phone)... but what should be the first things I should install to allow me disable/remove all the bloatware and replace the home launcher etc? If anyone could give even a mini step by step it would be amazing!
There's hardly any bloatware. I suggest you use the phone as it is. Just install all the updates from update center and go on using. I'm sure you'll find the Sony launcher better than most other launchers. It grows on you
Sent from my Compact Beast The Third.
You really don't need to root this phone, the softwares are well written as not buggy, most apps these days world's well without much tweaking.
This is my first phony airport any urges to root.
Thanks again everyone!
I'm not sure I mentioned, or if it emulates from my posts, but I'm quite particular about the way I have it set up hence wanting to remove pretty much any app I don't use, I've been using ZEAM launcher for about 4 years on my current phone and previous. It hasn't been updated in about 2 years now, but as long as I can have the following I'll be ok:

Right now rooting involves unlocking bootloader. There is no root method for locked bootloader
What would be the best way to disable/delete/replace apps I wonder and how do you know what's safe to disable and what's not? Is it just a case of disabling everything or can you delete apps too? Anything else I should be aware of before I start the migrate?

It's meant to be a lot better, I haven't started using it, but size wise it's pretty much the same, you won't notice a difference using it or in your pocket lets say.
My razr has been slow too, but I think I'm just putting it through too much but other than that it's been a great phone.
I need a phone that can handle multi intensive apps running at the same time, maps, phone, music etc. I wouldn't think you'd be disappointed.

Don't root, disable bloat where you can. Google now launcher on this phone is great!
May I also recommend the ringke fusion clear case.

So unhappy I switched to Z2

I formerly had a Galaxy S2, great machine, just getting a bit low on memory.
So i bought a fancy looking Z2 with top features, I even have a purple cover for it now! Yeaaahh.
Only,...
I'm totally not happy with my new 'flagship':
- Can't root on 4.4.4 (finally managed to unlock, jeeeej )
- Can't write to SD cart (because I can't root) with all my pictures, movies etc I just bought a 64Gb
- Kitkat 4.4.4 suddenly uses the most ugly emojis, yellow blobs and childish look
(I switched my S2 to Lollipop, great system but same childish design.)
- Go Sms, my favorite has less options (no scheduled messages etc)
- Some older apps won't work anymore?
Also:
- The Camera is not handy placed, just in a corner so you put your finger mostly on it
- Buttons are not handy placed, I regularly press the Camera button when picking up)
I hope you guys have any advice for me?
Except buying a Samsung ?
Get used to it.
When done you'll never turn back

well if you havent kept a lot of data on your phone and is relatively fresh i'll suggest you downgrade and root right now before it becomes a full days work to backup your data. there are plenty of guides available in general forum showing how to do that. i guess your statement "managed to unlock", means you unlocked the bootloader, i hope you didnt before backing up the TA partition, writing on SD can be achieved after you root and install kitkat sd card patch or installing a ROM like MoonWalker by @Pandemic (i'm using it and it's really good btw), also there are plenty of other messaging apps now in the playstore along with different keyboards which should provide you with your desired features and emoticons, that's definitely not a reason not to like your phone.
also the camera and button placements are just becoz of your habits and you will get used to them, i personally had no such problems even after moving from a phone which had power button on the top and no camera button at all, so you'll learn to use it too.
I switched couple of week back... but don't have any serious issue
Hi,
Its sad that you are unhappy with Z2.
I recently switched my primary phone to z2 from iPhone 5S - although totally different OS but I like it as much I liked 5S (apart from Camera , I hope I will eventually learn how to take better pic with z2). Although this is not my first android(I published few unsuccessful apps/games on market) I used note1, xperia x10i, moto e etc.
And off course I don't want to root right now - as I am quite happy the apps/modded-android that comes with xperia. Just downloaded couple of apps I need and got help from XDA to transfer data from iPhone to z2.
But I must say I was terribly unhappy with Note 1- I don't know but started to hate that sh**t phone from the day 1.
Just waiting to receive lollypop update from Sony and may be in future I will stick to Sony and iPad(Love to use it ).

Thanks for your kind reply buddy (I ignore the impolite childish replies over here )
How you mean, backup my TA? I didn't, just used the instructions on Sony and other sites via fastboot.
Is that a big problem?
I was also thinking about downgrading, just the big task and problems you might run into is holding me back.
Regarding the smileys, it's no big issue, but these new Android Lollipop Emojis are awefull. I'm not the only with that opinion. Seems that they are implemented in all new Android apps. (or is it system level).
I'm looking forward to upgrade to Lollipop for the features. But I hope I will be rootable.
It least give me my SD back please. The rest I can live with.
I come from Resurrection remix. Also Pac are very nice ROMs.

You can't root 4.4.4? Bull****, there are enough rooting methods on these forums for that firmware. And yes, I know. it's a lot of work to root then, but that your only option for now. It is something different than having a Galaxy S2.
You can complain about not being able to write to your SD card to Google. They made changes in 4.4.4 causing that ****. It's bull****.
Kitkat uses ugly emojis? Those are the standard android emojis? If you don't like them, then that's you problem... It's your taste.
It sucks for your apps that don't work anymore, but that's not a problem with the Z2. The developer should update their app.
The camera is not handy placed? You knew where the camera was placed BEFORE buying this phone, so it's bull**** to complain about it after buying the phone instead of looking at this before making the decision of buying this phone. I don't have any problems with the camera placement.
Buttons are not handy placed? Preference I guess? You're used to having no camera button on your S2, also I can't relate to this problem accidentely pressing the camera button. It's totally you, I never have this. Maybe once? Twice? But not more.
If you already don't like this about the Z2, what will you not like about other phones? You will always be complaining no matter what phone you have. There are no perfect phones.
My Advice:
Flash and root your Z2 with Niaboc´s Method: http://forum.xda-developers.com/xperia-z2/development/stock-4-4-4-23-0-1-0-167-bug-free-t2929402 (If you prefer Stock ROM)
Additionally Xposed Installer and Gravity Box and I bet, you´ll be pleased.
Also make you familiar with Root-Methods in the special Section http://forum.xda-developers.com/xperia-z2#root

Good advice !
Since I'm not rooted I can't install a recovery, right?
1) Install a recovery
I don't see how to flash it from that tut? What software to use to flash it?
I think I will go for a lollipop version in the end, but for now this seems a great Rom indeed !
About the Emojis,
I have the sony version (but seems on my Samsung also these)

The section says towelroot but that doesn't work for 4.4.4
Please note this is only one of many options. TowelRoot is currently a quicker and easier option. But the journey to root can be a fulfilling learning experience in itself.

Guess the only option is going through the downgrade process?
What about the unlock TA that I didn't backup? Is it important?
OK, I've found out, it's about waranty.

sorry to bring you the bad news buddy but by simply unlocking the bootloader you have voided your warranty and also any chance of getting the official sony lollipop update, the thing is after unlocking your bootloader you lose your DRM keys which are unrecoverable unless backed up before hand. and relocking the bootloader wont bring them back. it causes to lose some functionality like x-reality engine and playstation app wont work anymore, but the good thing is you can use a simpler method to root your device now, you dont have to downgrade. and you can now flash a kernel which is already rooted through fastboot method (i''m sorry i dont exactly know the method, as I rooted using different method), and also you can flash AOSP ROMS like PA and Also CM. also in future some devs will definitely bring some sony lollipop bsed FW so you can use them also. until you have some software related problem which require warranty, you should be fine.

Thank you so much for that info !!!
Ok then that's good news (until I have bad luck )
I hope I don't lose the Noise Cancelling option, that's my loved feature. I don't care about Playstation.
I will look for a LP version than, Looking at eXistenZ now.
Just figuring out how to flash it now without first rooting.
Thx again !

You also loose Sony Bionz image processing which helps to reduce the low light camera noise. There's a method to restore some of those functionality you lost when you unlock the bootloader, find that thread. Next time do a bit of research before you do anything.
Half of the things you mentioned that you hate about Z2 are rather android 4.4 limitations than Z2 problems ?
Well simply you can use DRM feature restoration to restore the functions but it won't restore your lost TA.img file but the functionality.
Hope it will not be by passed with LP. Plus Once you come to Sony Devices you should always wait for LB root plus once you achieve that you're always good to go. If I were you I'd have done a small research on web that what kinda consequences that I will have to face if I unlock the BL. Plus I am on Unlocked BL and I am not receiving any single update now. Not even app updates

This is a joke right? The way i see it is you're actually unhappy with your own intelligence or would of been able to conquer these petty small things. Search each of your issues in the xda search box and you will find answers to the majority of them, read and educate yourself.

This reply makes me so hard laugh lol !!
well let me say this to you:
The Z2 is way better then any other Samsung device and you cant compare the Z2 with the lowest budget phone what i know like the GS2 (Z2 is a high budget device)
Well here are the answers:
- 4.4.4 is rootable, just search or use even google and tadaa !
you found it
- Flash a custom rom and learn to read the changelog because all the 4.4.4 Stock Custom Roms here have fixed that to wright to sd etc
- about the emoij`s, well i like them, so let we dont talk about Samsung`s childesh toy device with alot of plasic and even more worse Emoij`s
- the sms have alot of options you just need to find them
- the camera is well placed and we all like it !!
Advice and what i have to say is:
i guess you have your Z2 less then 1 day and now start already to complain about it and learn to read and to ssearch and to understand because then you get to know everything !!
Enjoy your stay with your Z2 what you totally dont like, it is a totally other device then Samsung, so there are differents, learn to respect and accept it.
Bye !
Once rooted there's a lot of possibilities, install Xposed Framework, then install Gravity Box, a lot of stuff's there.

Yes, I know that you have to be rooted and after that the sky is almost the limit, I've installed my S2 a zillion of times. But see, on Z2 4.4.4. you can not easily root.
I will take the path to reinstall the previous version.
We're not all nerd like most of the peepz here And I'm not a noob either.
