Done a search on various site but still no joy.
Just got a o2 XDA Mini S yesterday.But I cannot get it to connect to my wireless network at home.Its an open network, with a laptop,3 PC's,2 xbox's accessing it various times of day.All connect no problem.
My xda says my network is available,but cannot connect to it. Do I need to put in IP addresses in manually ? On the network cards section, it the SDIO WLAN wireless adapter that is used ?

First Question,
Is your WiFi router set to DHCP mode. If so then check that your device is also set to DHCP mode. If not change router to DHCP check that all your other devices are set to DHCP then you should automatically be allocated an IP address. A useful utility is WiFi Companion.
This scans for available networks and allows you to connect. it will also show you the IP address you have been assigned.
You could assign an IP address manually but this will have to be changed every time you walk on to another network. DHCP is better.

but are you using MAC address filtering?
when I got the Sony Laptop, I was so eager to get it all setup etc, that I forgot bout the filtering, it would see the network, but refused to connect.
I'm having the same problem. My Exec can see the network but not connect. I investigated it a bit more and for some reason it keeps trying to use the same IP address as my laptop. It also cannot connect to the net to update Avant Go when it's syncing (via my laptop).
I've tried connecting with all other devices switched off, to avoid the IP address conflict, but still cannot connect to the internet.
I'm pretty much stumped.
Setting the Wireless power setting for best performance was the trump for me.

If my laptop is switched off my Exec can connect to my D-Link router, but I cannot access any internet resources. I presume that somewhere in the settings is the solution but I can't find it.

For some reasons setting wireless "best performance" wortked for me too. Wizard (QTEK 9100 - gray market I guess as QTEK did not register on their site for me). I will still try Opera too.

same thing happened to my qtek. it detected the network but could not connect and sometimes when it got connected, i still couldn't surf the net. is there anything in the settings that i'm missing? i also tried to enter the IP address manually but no luck either.
My O2 XDA Mini arrived yesterday. It sees my wireless network (as well as two others in my neighborhood) but cannot/will not connect. I've tried everything I've read above - which confirms I'm on the right trail, but...
The D-Link DI-624 wireless router is in DCHP mode. I've dropped all security for connection trials. I've put the MAC address of the XDA in the router, just in case. I cannot find the IP address of the Mini (how do you do that?), but have tried with and without allowing the router to assign it a random and an assigned IP address. My router does NOT have the default (198.162, etc, etc IP address.) so I've been careful not to blindly follow standard instructions. Of course, I have tried with specific IP addresses, default gateway (router), etc, etc.
One clue is that after trying for a long time to connect to the networks it finds, I got one error message from the XDA saying it could not be assigned an IP address from the network(s). Good clue - wish I know what it means.
There are only limited settings to check on the XDA, so I'm wondering if I'm missing something on the router. Any ideas? Many thanks.

ive never used wifi before on my exec or in a home network so treat me as a beginer. ive got a pci wifi network card and i am trying to set it up so i can use my mda pro when i am at home. my computer is currently connected to my housemates wired network which is a simple set up

like i said nothing fancy, i installed the network card which went fine and bridged my network connections together as advised by my large local computer retailer. my computer asked me to provide a name and network key so i did. my pc is now connected to my mda pro.

From the info that you have given, it looks like your universal is getting an incorrect ip address. What you need to do is check what your desktop ip address and gateway is. Then give your universal and ip in the same range as the desktop ip and also add the gateway to your device. It should wotk this way !
The best option would be to get a wireless access point instead of the wireless network card and set things up like this.

The wireless access point plugges directly into the router rather than connecting through your PC.
If you don't fancy the above setup then you could use internet connection sharing. You'll need to remove the bridge between your network cards and ensure that the router,your PC and friends PC's isn't using 192.168.0.x IP addresses.
Then you can select ICS (tick the allow other computers to access internet...) on your network card's (one to the router) advanced properties and select your wireless NIC as your home network connection.
I hope this isn't too heavy I've resisted the temptation to start talking about subnets, NAT, DHCP and all the other networking terms.
Since I bought the HD2 before 2 month and after 2 Rom upgrade I still have the same Wifi problem. I can connect to my home network and the Router can see the HD2 but I can not connect to the Internet through the Wifi. All other computers and PS3 connect just fine. Ip adress seems also ok.
Please help ?
I did have the same problem a while back, and it occured after I used the wifi router. Have you ever used that, even just to try it?
No I never tried the Wifi Router even once and changed rom twice.

Probably not the same issue then. For some reason I had it trying to give me a static IP address that my router wouldn't allow (I've got MAC forwarding on my router to make sure that nothing other than the 4 things I have can connect to it).
When you connect to the wifi, can you open the router admin on your HD2?

It's not a proxy issue, if you're not using a proxy server. Could you try this and let me know how you get on?
Start your wifi connection
Go to all settings, connection, wifi, wireless networks, network adapters tab
Select the Broadcom DHD adapter
It should be set to use a server assigned IP address, not a static one. It probably is, but it's worth checking.
When I open Wifi settings I can only open advanced no wireless networks or network adapter tab. How do I get there ?

After you've started wifi, go to the settings tab, menu and all settings. Then carry on the instructions in the last post.
Found the all settings, the DHD adapter is set to server assigned. Any other ideas ?

Well i think we have the same problem.. If you try to connect your wireless, do you get the failure after pressing get IP: Cannot obtain serverassigned IP....

I found out that if i you go under WIFI>ADVANCED>press on the NETWORKCARD under the field "SSID"> then go to the networkcard>Broadcom 802.11 DHD network adapter>remove the pin in use serverassigned, and write a static ip: example: IP: 192.168.1.23
UNDERMASK: 255.255.255.0
STANDARDgateway: 192.168.1.1
That helped for me, though i cannot use that fix because my college wont accept the static IP. so it works for like 2 mins and then it disconnect. hehe.
Heh - that would be pretty much my next suggestion.
Try a static IP address and see if that works. It's not a long-term solution, but it would determine whether it's your phone or the router that's having the problem.
Last time I set a static IP address, I liked it and left it like that, but I found (after a couple of days with no internet access) that it tries to assign the same IP address when you use your data connection for internet access. Your service provider is very unlikely to allow you to use the same IP address, so you probably can't connect.
Like I said, it's a test to see if you can connect - not a solution.
Do you know what IP addresses your router will allow you to use? Do you have a specified range of addresses, for example?
I have this exact same problem. I can connect to wifi networks at home, office, etc... But no network access. It connects to the AP's, gives me an IP Address, but I can't ping anything!
This thing gets more and more frustrating daily.

It also happened to me. Turns out it was the router I was using. I bought a new one earlier today and problem solved!

I got a d-link dgl-4300 router, and had problem getting a IP adr. from it. When I gave my HD2 a static IP it worked, but very slow. After I changed from DHD network adapter to NE 2000 compatible ethernet driver it get IP from router and I can browse internet through wifi fast. Maybe it can help u 2.

I would like to connect to my laptop next room from local network. I can connect perfectly when I type in my IP address into the first textbox (Computer), but I can't connect when I type in my Computer Name (full computer name) instead. I tried MyPCName as Computer, \\MyPCName as Computer, forwarding port 3389 to my IP, leaving domain name empty, putting in my workgroup name as a domain, putting in my computer name as a domain, putting in myPCName\MyUserName as Username, \\MyPCName as Computer, still the same. It won't connect unless I put in the IP address. I would like to do this since my workplace assigns a different IP to my laptop then I assign at home, but naturally I have the same computer name at both places, so I would like to have a permanent setting for both places.
I'm running Windows 7 64 bit on my laptop and 1.66.405.2 ROM on my HTC HD2.

I can connect from other computers fine. Also on my HD2 I can see the host names of PC's under Resco Explorer and map them. However, remote desktop mobile refuses to work with the Computer Name. I can ping my Laptop's IP and also Computer name from pingbox2. Only in Remote Desktop Mobile there is a problem.
windows 7 by default blocks remote desktop connections from different versions of remote desktop. if you right click computer and select properties, then choose remote settings on the right hand side and select the middle option (accept connections from all verions of remote desktop). havent tried this my self but it solves most issues when using different versions of windows
OK, I sort of figured it but would still appreciate some help. Here is how I got it to work:
I had OpenDNS IP under DNS settings for wireless adapter. I deleted them. If I don't do this, pinging my computer name from HD2 always brings 67.215.65.132, which is opendns and not my true local IP, i.e. 192.168.x.x. I also had to disable the data connection (3G) and only have wireless. If I don't disable 3G, I can only connect with IP and not computer name. Only after doing these 2, when I pinged my computer name, I got the true local IP and I was able to connect with Remote Desktop Mobile using computer name. Now my question is:
1- I don't want to quit using opendns, is it possible?
2- I don't want to disable 3G connection every time, is it possible?

For me it works with MyPCName in computer and empty domain, both for XP and 7.
Something seems strange with your phone's networking configuration. At a guess (and this is a long shot), I would check your VPN settings on your phone to make sure you're not connecting to a different domain over 3G as this might explain why it works when you turn off the data connection on the phone and why it works by IP address.
As I said though, it's a long shot and is the only thing I could think of that fits your particular symptoms...

about the open dns issues, I suspect that can be solved by making sure your router lets the incoming connection into your home network (you say it resolves to 66.whatever when open dns is used, shouldn't be a problem do long as you don't forget that will be your home ip address so that connection will neef to be allowed through the router and then forwarded by your routers virtual server (our whatever your router software calls out) to your laptops internal ip address.
as for the 3g it should use wifi over 3g by default..... mine certainly does, no need for me to disable it.

I think you're right, when the 3G is on (and also Wifi on), Resco shows computers from all around the country when I click computers near me and not my local network. When only wifi is on I can see my local computers. 3G probably has precedence over Wifi? How can I correct this?

But the 66.whatever address is generic openDNS lookup IP and same for everyone. Are you suggesting me to route this IP to my local IP, i.e. 192.168.x.x? Oh, one more thing, I can also connect when 3g and wifi are both on, but only through computer's IP and not computer name. Can you connect with computer name while both are on and connected?
when your phone does a dns lookup on the name it resolves to the open dns assigned address (not the same for everyone, otherwise the open fns system wouldn't work) so to connect to your computer the phone sends its request to open dns who forward that request to your current actual address.at home that address is your home ip address BUT it isn't your laptops address it is your routers address.(stop reading here if you don't have a router).
so the router needs to be told "if you get a connection request in port (whatever the remote desktop port is) please forward it to (laptop ip address)
its called port forwarding in some routers, virtual server in others.

You're mixing up things a bit - he's not using dns but the computer netbios name. The point is that he has wifi on and connected as well as 3G, thus with an "intranet" ip address on Wifi... so the program/phone should be looking up the name on that connection, where it would find it, instead of looking up over the 3G connection. As the netbios protocol is not routable, it has no chance of finding the computer name over 3G/internet and back home, even with port mappings.

you're totally right, I have a router and its port is forwarded to my laptop IP, but this is only good (and works well too) when I want to connect from Internet to my local network. I tried OpenDNS exceptions for VPN and defined an exception named as MyComputerName but it didn't work. Then I tried a dyndns solution, but it only works for external connections and not local network, i.e. it can't map local IP's. What I need is a dynamic client which can update my local IP.
I also tried to edit hosts entry in the registry with MyComputerName. It works for a single IP, but I'm not sure if I can write multiple IP adresses (my work and home local IP) into that. If I could maybe everything would be OK.
I've just tried a couple of things and it really works fine for me. If I connect Wifi only, I can remote desktop with the computer name. If I then connect data connection, it still works. Disabling wifi and obviously it doesn't work anymore. Re enabling wifi, it doesn't work at first, but does again after ~30 seconds once the netbios protocol has done its host lookup procedures.
There simply shouldn't be anything special to do.

thank you very much for your time, I appreciate it. You're right in that waiting a bit resolves the issue (it's a bit more than 30 secs for me that's why I thought it wasn't working when 3G is enabled) but only when OpenDNS is not used. I assume you don't use OpenDNS, right? Once I put that one into equation, it takes over NetBIOS protocol and returns its IP instead of the local IP(192.168.x.x). As far as I understand, DNS lookup has precedence over NETBIOS and if the name is not found in DNS it consults NETBIOS protocol. However OpenDNS has this nice "feature" where it finds the name with its own IP. There are several posts about this on its webpage and they say to either disable the typo correction or put exceptions for Netbios names, but sadly none of them works for me right now.
Nope, no OpenDNS, never actually heard of it.
How does it work? Do you enter their DNS server address in the network settings of your pc/phone, or is it an app you run?
you click Start/Settings/All Settings/Connections/Wifi/First Button/Switch to Network Adapters tab/Select Broadcom 802.11 DHD Network Adapter/Switch to Name Servers Tab/Type in 208.67.222.222 for primary DNS and 208.67.220.220 for secondary DNS, click OK. that's all. OK, remote desktop doesn't work either with the OpenDNS servers in.
I'm pretty sure it must be a limitation of the remote desktop app itself, as resco explorer can still navigate and/or discover the network shares of my other PCs with no problem. NBTStatCE also finds everybody.
Wouldn't even surprise me, as that Remote desktop mobile has always been troublesome. I don't remember exactly, but in the WM5 days it was pretty much impossible to use on a local network due to a weird handling of names... if I remember well all "local" (NetBIOS) addresses without a '.' entered in the remote desktop app would be redirected to the "Work" connection, while "remote" ones with a period would be directed on the "Internet" connection. As a network card can only be defined as one of them, if you wanted it to work in both cases through Wifi you had to switch the card from Work to Internet and back all the time. And of course when it's on Work it breaks some other things that use the default system handling like mail.

I have the Note 3 on Three UK which allows unlimited data and tethering, I can tether to my PC no problem.
I want to tether to my wired devices which I currently connect using a router and Netgear WN3000RP Range Extender, this set up works fine when I connect to my main router.
I tried to set up my tethering to the WN3000RP and it connects, but does not share the connection. I did the firmware check and it said there is no new version - so that tells me the extender is accessing the internet, but going out of it, no connection to the internet
I have tried pinging 192.168.43.1 which is no use - fail
Has anyone done this before? is there an app to help?
I am not sure what the problem is but I have tried everything - resets, reboots, restores etc.

what are your wired devices looking for as the default gateway and DNS, are they trying to DHCP for their address?
If they can identify the phone and ping it then at least you have comms up to the edge but the gateway and DNS need to be set for them to reach further and out to the web.

After much hair extraction, I think I have finally figured this out!
I was not setting any security and using MAC filtering on the phone instead of encryption as the bridge was struggling. As soon as I connected the extender, I added it as an authorised device, then connected to my pc and nothing.
After much messing about, I put some rubbish apps on which reset all the settings and renamed the APN to (APPNAME_COOL) or whatever it was and removed the MAC Filtering - and it works
So, I dont quite understand this, but the setup goes
1) Note 3 - WIFI Tether
2) Netgear Range Extender - RJ45 to
3) Netgear DSL Router - RJ45 to 4 different devices
Now all these 5 devices show up as connected by wireless, I thought the router would be connected to the extender and the extender to the phone as totally different devices, not passed down each step of the way.
Oh well, now on to the next amazing challenge, I have just put OpenWRT on the router and am aiming to set this up with my ADSL from downstairs and my DC-HSDPA as a "Bonded" connection to give me download speeds of about 40-45meg!
Thats a long way off though as I have not even got 1 connected via wireless yet, so still using extender+router

I take it your DSL router is connected to an ISP? You may find that you get contention between the router and the tether in terms of where traffic ends up going, will depend on where the devices see the default gateway taking them. If the router were a cable type you might get away with the extender plugged in to the WAN port so all traffic would route via the 4G tether. Wouldn't then extend the range for other devices that well if the phone isn't there to provide the uplink to the isp.
Am on EE myself, not unlimited data (3GB) but last check I got 40-50Mb download and 24Mb up
