[Q] Faster way to get Google Now voice Search? [UK] - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello,
To get to a quick voice search on GN I have to:
Press the power button
Slide finger from bottom of screen to activate GN
Click the microphone button.
With iPhone's Siri, I just press and hold the centre button.
Is there a way I can get to GN quicker?
A shortcut key? volume rocker? or something?
Thanks

Flash cm10.1 and use lock screen shortcuts.

Was hoping for a solution on stock ROM unrooted...
Any other thoughts?
Thanks

Add a widget to your homescreen, maybe? You'll have plenty of more options if you root.

Doesn't your gn have the small circle at the bottom of lock screen? That you just swipe up.
It's a feature built in jelly bean.

Yes, it does, as I pointed out in my OP.
But I want something quicker...

You're assuming every time you want to use Google Now your GN is locked. So let's assume the iPhone is also locked.
1. Press power button/wake phone.
2. Tap home button.
3. Continue holding button until it 'beeps'.
4. Speak.
5. Wait approx. 3 times the load time of Google Now for an answer (on a good day).
The iPhone clearly has a longer, more ineffective process.
So now let's be a little more realistic. Let's assume that your phone is already awake and all you need to do if within an app is to simple press your home button.
With the Galaxy Nexus you have that nice big Google Search bar on the top of every home screen. Use that widget. The microphone icon on that widget (to the far right) takes you directly into the voice search function. With one click. Use it .
If that's still not good enough, root your phone. Its a Nexus. Then you can have so many more options.
Swipe up for the voice search, hold home button for voice search, lock screen Short cut, there are SO MANY options with AOSP based ROMs especially. Root your phone.

I'm surprised hotword detection wasn't mentioned yet. Have that enabled.
From lockscreen:
Power button
Swipe up from bottom to get to Google Now
Say "Google" followed by your voice search.

You just press the home button for 2 secs and Siri starts with a beep. This works when the phone is off.
This is useful - as this approach doesn't require you to look at the device, you can do it blind [driving], simply adjust the phone in your hand, and press the only button on the front, then start talking. Eyes stay on the TV/Road/Steak.
I'm not saying that Siri is better than GN. In fact, in some basic tests GN is far far far better and faster! I love it.
I just wish I could get to it quicker than currently, as quick as I can with Siri.

Hotword is US only unfortunately - Thought I'd throw in the [UK] tag in the thread title in case anyone thought about hotword
I was hoping that there would be a reply that says "yeah sure, just press volume down for 3secs and it will start!"... I guess not!

Sounds like a feature for a custom ROM?

I had a similar problem, but if you change your default language to English (US) google hot words should show up when you try and use it next time.
The only issue i noticed with this is, is that you had an american dictionary whilst using your keyboards.

N1 Major complaint

Power button to wake up then slide to unlock, this is horrible, not intuitive and actually very difficult for me to do in my good hand (left, m righty) and near impossible to do in right hand. Man i miss MT3G duoble click menu, anyone know if I can set A double trackball click? (putting it to sleep sucks too, hope the "proximity sensor" works)
Second complaint (existed with MT3g before cyan) home screen no landscape
Third (lol) I miss the app drawer
Fourth (man I know) can we get a full screen (home screen) widget that is phone dialer a la iphone so I can quick swipe to it since there is no phone button.
I look the phone and performance but honestly at this point I will probably get drawed until so of these can get fixed, I am going to stick it out and see if I can get used to it, but its been 9 hours now and not fond the "ergo"
Let me know if you have ideas, solutions or are willing to make an app hehehhe
Hahaha, I think I like every function you mentioned. To each his own I suppose...
My only problem (if it can really be called a problem) is with the push the top power button to wake the phone. It feels awkward to me. I wonder if the unlock function can be remapped to the trackball?
Yeah to each his own, the Iphone button to wake (which would be similar to trackball) can easily be done with the index/thumb hold the power button requires a cradling and sadly its difficult to contort my hand that way.
The app drawer, i dont know, i was much faster to scroll in before and the new 3d thing has a bounce back (ie it locks to 4x4 icons never halfway at top) throws off the quick flick and click for me at least.
I would love the left most home screen to just be the dialer screen flicking with thumb across screen is easier then finding icon and clicking for me at least
MMMV lol but i think others may like these things too
david, me too, actually that's my only "major" issue the rest were nits i had to pick.
lol also, the new app thing is jolting to the user experience, the rest of the home is swipe, swipe down for notifications, swipe sideways for home screens then click for apps. its weird, maybe i was only one that dragged the old draw up and down instead of clicking the tab....
The real problem with the top button is its lack of feedback. It doesn't "click". Still works though
1. I gotta admit... I don't like where the power button is. I usually hold the phone with my left hand while I use my right to swipe or press. The power button is right where I would normally hold on to the top of the phone. Its taking a conscience effort to change the way I hold it, so eventually it won't be a big deal.
2. I also agree about the homescreen. I use handcent, and if I am on the home screen when I recieve a popup, I can't turn the phone to landscape to use the bigger keyboard to post a quick reply. That is frustrating to me.
3. The button works fine for me. I kinda like it.
4. I don't care either way for a widget that lets you dial. I mean, hitting the phone button seems to work pretty well for me ( I haven't used an Iphone to know what you mean by this).
Overall, the speed is more then enough to make up for any shortcomings. The power button issue is one that has actually really bothered me. The oversaturation of colors, especially on apps like The Weather Channel has slightly bothered me. Other then that, I really like the dialer on the phone. As much as I liked wysie's contacts, the new dialer is freakin great. But I can't really complain. Its been a nice phone to have so far. Really nice. I just wish the Polar live wallpaper actually worked.
You will always be able to nitpick, but right now I'm sort of reveling in the fact that I now own the best phone the world. I didn't like the iPhone this much when I got it around launch.
maybe a 1x2 icon for dialer like the same icon from the dial pad the big green phone as a widget? lol

Yeah, this is a BIG beef for me. I find the new app menu klunky as all get out. The label text on several rows of my menu are overlapping/corrupt, and I find it realyl tricky to scroll to the end of the menu quickly due to the way it "snaps" onto rows. Again, I hope Cyan'd firmware will revert this to sanity.

I don't use widgets, but I for one don't miss the phone buttons. Why should the phone app get preferential treatment with it's own hardkeys. *
][
* Yes, yes, I know the smarta$$ answer is "because it's a phone".
well i did a little messing around with remapping keys and wasn't able to cut my phone off, but i did make my power button into a trackball pressed button lmao.
right now, from the way it is looking, there is not an incredibly easy to make the trackball pressed (DPAD_CENTER) wake the phone up without sacrificing a fair amount of usability I will try and play with it some more later.
The files I was changing were both in /system/usr/keylayout/
mahimahi-keypad.kl and
qwerty.kl
I had to make changes to each of the 2 for it to stick. Maybe someone can take this info and run with it. I also had to reboot after pushing the files for it to take place.
The only thing that really bothers me is that one has to remove the battery to remove the SD card.
That is unlike all the other Android phones I know of. (T-mobile anyway.)

Never had an iphone, but I rather like the setup. Assures me that I'm not wasting battery life with it on in my pocket. If the touchscreen woke up on press, sure it might not unlock but it'll still be lighting up all the time.
On earlier hardware, other than the END button (which I suppose became the sleep/wake button), you could press menu (which would take you to the lock-combination screen, or the home screen if you didn't have a lock-combo) and the back button would also serve to wake the phone, you still had to use the END button to sleep.
Has any of you tested if menu or back will wake the phone?
they are touch sensitive on the nexus, so they are definitely a no-go

CLIQ gets added button functionality 01/28 through OTA

http://forums.t-mobile.com/t5/MOTOR...available-STILL-1-5-though/td-p/304863/page/2
There was an OTA update to the CLIQ today, which was taken down after 15 minutes. Reports say this added functionality to their home button as such:
There is also a new option to double-click home button to launch, contact, voice search, etc... it's under Application Settings

As for the double tap on the home screen, you can now set that as a shortcut. So if you press the home key twice, it will open up a certain function of the phone. Like take you to your contacts or open something else. By default it opens up google voice search.

No you can't customize the Double Tap. It is located under Settings - Application Settings and gives you the choices of Voice Search, Messaging, Dialer, Map, Contact and Camera

Is there any chance that something like this can be either a) ported over, or if it's not possible, b) developed for the Nexus One? (Basically if it is possible to add button functionality using the standard SDK tools?)
And even better, edited/hacked so as to allow home button double-tap to launch ANY app? (And even add double tap functionality for the other buttons?)
I don't see this working too well with capacitive buttons, tbh.
double tap on track ball
I wish there is a way to have double tab on he track ball to launch the dialer or to my favorite contacts. It would make it easy for making phone calls.

That too!
The reason I ask if this is even possible to develop using the standard SDK tools is because I've been searching and searching and searching and searching over the past year with my G1 for some app on the Market that adds or alters button functionality. To date, there is not a *SINGLE* app that does this for *ANY* Android phone.
Until yesterday's update of course. Finally!!!
Is this something that ONLY Motorola (and other carriers) can do?
Personally, I would love to see a mod in spare parts or something that would make it so that all of the capacitive buttons at the bottom of the screen on the Nexus would require a double-tap to be activated. This would help us avoid brushing up against them accidentally when not meaning to. Granted, it would take a little bit of getting used to double-tapping them to make them work, but I'm sure some people would appreciate and use such a mod. I'm talking about a purely optional mod that you would not have to have turned on (but could via Spare Parts) and would be off to keep the button behavior stock by default.

i guess the longevity of the trackball is low, at least it is on my blackberry. if you are onto this, mate, then, maybe, it could be either dblpress or longpress - to chose from?

I crave a brightness button

I have found all kinds of widgets for controlling brightness, but they all have one disadvantage - you have to first go to the home screen and then click on the widget. I really want a way to control brightness from any application without having to leave the application to go back to the home screen. The CM9 based rom I'm using (Paranoid Android) actually has something like this ... but I don't like it for two reasons. The first is that it takes two taps to bring up the brightness slider. (One tap to open the notification window, and a second tape to bring up the toggle screen). The 2nd reason (and more significant) is that the slider is quite small and for me it does not feel very responsive or easy to control. The brightness slider control from some of the widgets I have tried are much easier to use.
Ideally I could bring up a brightness widget by long pressing on the physical home button. Currently this long press on my note will bring up the recently used apps, but this function is already served by a soft button provided by CM9. I've read that the ADWlauncherEX will allow you to reprogram the function of the long press - although installing and learning how to use a launcher seems like overkill, especially since I have a rom that already includes quite a sophisticated launcher.
I found an app that would bring up a brightness slider when you clicked on the vol up or down buttons. This worked well for brightness although was a major drag when all I wanted to do was adjust the volume. I also found an application that would allow you to call an app or a widget in response to a double or triple click of the volume buttons. That seemed ideal because it would give me quick access to a brightness control without interfering with the main use of the volume rocker. Unfortunately that application seems to have been discontinued (why!) and I couldn't even seem to find an old verison of that.
Another idea would be to reassign one of the soft keys provided by CM9. Since these soft keys merely duplicate the functions of the existing galaxy note keys (the physical home button and the two buttons on either side of it). Unfortunately I have yet to find an application that can remap one of those buttons. Another idea would be to add another soft button near the 3 soft buttons that are already there. (Are their any applications that can do that?)
And finally I figured that brightness could be controlled via screen gestures. I did find some applications that claimed to be able to do this, although I couldn't get them to work on my Note.
If you know of any application or method that can provide a brightness control button, please let me know as this is the only remaining aspect of the note's user interface that is still driving me nuts.
Thanks
~Paul
Wasn't there a feature in CyanogenMod 7 that would allow to change brightness via sliding sideways in notification area? Too bad it never worked for me in any of the phones I tried CM7 in. I understood it should have worked with no slider? Just sliding your finger accross the notifications area? That would be better than a slider imo.
I've not used paranoid android, I'm using the RC of CM9 and that does have status bar brightness control. To turn it on you go to system, then Status bar and there is a tick box. Maybe that is still included in PA if it is CM9 based? It lets you control the brightness from anywhere just by swiping left and right on the status bar.
It is not as nice as the notification tray slider you can find in AOKP roms, and there used to be a mod for CM9 that did this, but it no longer works, but it is better than nothing.

Thanks for the tip John. Qbright certainly has one of the best brightness slider bars I've seen and the configurable buttons are great. However I have to say I'm somewhat mystified about how you use it. Qbright says you can activate it by long pressing on the search button. Search button? Do we have such a thing? On either side of the physical home button I only have the menu and back buttons. By long pressing the menu button I do get the search menu ... but it doesn't bring up Qbright. There is also a "Google" button at the top of the launcher. Pressing on that also brings up the search menu, but again it can't bring up Qbright. I'm running Paranoid Android. Maybe that's the problem. Does the stock ICS have a search button?
Thanks

Hi Tinderbox. Thanks for your reply but I think you seriously misinterpreted my question. I mentioned that I like that the Qbright buttons are configurable so I obviously found the preferences menu. But I was asking how you bring up the Qbright widget (other than clicking on its icon from the home screen of course). The documentation suggests this can be done by "long pressing on the search button". (There is no preference item related to this). I couldn't bring up the Qbright widget by long pressing on anything, so I'm wondering how you do this. If you actually have to go back to the home screen to start the widget, that would greatly detract from the beauty of the widget (which I'm sure is why they put the search long press capability into Qbright). But as I indicated in my previous message, it seems that the galaxy note does not have a dedicated search button, so this feature may not work. There are so many ways one could start such a widget I'm somewhat amazed that no one has figured out how to do it. (Or maybe they have and I am just in the dark or very confused). One way would be to long press on the back button. As far as I know, this currently does nothing so there would be no drawback what so ever. Perhaps a long press on the volume up or down button could also work for such a thing. Or an extra item could be added to the menu that appears when you press the power button. Or since I have a CM9 derived rom, it gives me three more soft keys (back, home, and recent apps). A long press on any of those could be used to bring up the widget. Or even a regular press on the first two could be used since they are duplicates for buttons I already have elsewhere.
Is this a valid question, or am I out in left field somewhere?
~Paul
I once accidentally set my brightness so low that I couldn't see the screen AT ALL.
I found myself really wishing there was some foolproof way to reset the screen to 100% brightness.
For example, rebooting the phone auto-resets the brightness to 100% or something.
I also tried using tasker so some obscure combination like volume+home could also reset the brightness.
I don't recall how I managed to reset my phone - i couldn't see anything. I think I just flailed about on it.

At first I thought that might be the answer, but I ran into two problems with it. The main one was that I would accidently change the brightness pretty often when I was just trying to click on an icon for instance. (Unless I made the slider very thin ... but then it was too hard to grab the slider). The other problem was that some of my full screen applications would force themselves on top and the slider would not activate.
Someone in another thread suggested what I now feel is the ultimate solution:

This solves all my problems with the galaxy note.
I can't believe this was so hard to find. I can't imagine that anyone would uninstall this application after trying it. It's like getting 3 extra hardware buttons for free!
I'm using:
- Home,Home to bring up Qbright.
- Home,Back to bring up papyrus (you never know when you need to scribble a note)
- Home,Menu to bring up a toggle widget (haven't decided which one yet, although I'm sure it will be easier to use than the built in PA one).
Thanks a million.

Top Power Button: FYI FIX

Hey guys, just a heads up...I'm trying to get used to this Note Edge (from Note 3). One thing I didn't like immediately was the power button on top, but here's a fix. Add the app called "Screen Off and Lock"... Next, edit one of your edge screens to add the lock button icon (as seen in picture below). Now you have a side lock button again. It works slick!
Good job man! I was looking for an app like this. I agree that the top button is one of my least favorite features of the phone. But this should solve that.

Good idea.

Awesome. Just installed it. Some much better than the power button on top. Thanks!!
hahaha we think alike! I did the same thing. One of the first things I installed was Fix Broken Power Button. I had this on my GS3 because the power button was broken and constantly turning the phone off. I cracked the phone open and scraped the button off completely off. I installed this to send the phone to standby. Crappy part was when I needed to turn the phone on after swapping out a battery I couldn't. I had to plug into a power source then hold vol down and the home button in order to power the phone up. So without a usb and a power source, I was out of luck. Oh well.. got a new phone now so no more of dealing with that!

Good use of the Edge screen. Another FYI: f anyone has Nova Prime launcher you can use Screen Off and Lock with it. Under Gestures and Buttons, then choose double tap for screen off. I don't know if it will work with Nova Free. I had purchased the launcher long before i had use for the double tap. Still waiting for a double tap for screen on like the LG G3. :fingers-crossed:
We are currently working on making a multi power feature for the edge screen. Swipe or knock to turn on/off, because it is killing me not to have a feature like this for that edge panel!
That's actually a pretty handy tip. I like the animations, as well. Back when I had my HTC Evo 4G rooted, I used the TV turn-off animation. Pretty neat to have that back.
Yep, no problem guys! As soon as I figured it out I knew I had to post it ASAP. It was the my biggest complaint turned into a handy feature! (being able to move the power button up or down on the edge screen to a comfortable spot)

It works really well. I'm going to use it while out tomorrow to see if it drains the battery faster. Thanks!
Thank God you posted this. The power button location was my one and only complaint, bit this fixes it.
Still wish they put the button underneath the volume keys though.
There is another app that does the same,

I have nova prime in my edge and it does not have that option. I know I've seen it on my other phones. Not sure what is going on
Just installed it couple hours ago. Way better than pressing the top bottom. :good:

Omg thank you, thus naked me miss root just a little less.

I miss Google Now on tap

On my previous 6P running nougat if I held down the middle button on the nav bar I could select information from the screen, whether it was text, phone number, or location. I hate that I dont have this anymore and the only thing that comes up is the assistant. I started a help message chat and they said they would recommend this up the food chain to be implemented again. That was something I used all the time and is frustrating I dont have it anymore.

This XDA article talks about how to get Now On Tap back.
Dunno if it works, I'm just linking the article.

Cool, thanks for the link. Honestly, this is the first phone Ive had since the Nexus One that I dont feel the need to root. I dont want to go that route just to get on tap back. Hopefully they implement it somehow on a future update.
Can't you just hold the home button down and then swipe up to get the same features as Now On Tap? I can.

Holy cow, glad I asked this. I had no idea that gesture would bring up tap. Even the help chat didnt know!! That being said, the few times I tried it, it came up with "nothing on the screen". Only once did it come up with a result. It didnt work on a screenshot of someones phone number. Oh well, work in progress I suppose.

It misses a few things (like the ability to select some text on the screen, and have Google research that text), and sharing the current screen (minus the notifications). Hopefully, those will be added to this
