[How to]Use your phone as WIFI USB Card. - Networking

Hi,
I Shared this software was i found because I think it is very useful if you dont have a Wifi USB card.
PdaNet+ is one of the top Android applications of all time. PdaNet+ shares the Internet access of your Android phone with your computer or tablet. PdaNet+ works on all Android phones without rooting. It also does not require a tether plan, that will save you $20/month from most carriers.
PdaNet+ now bundles both PdaNet and FoxFi to give you supports of WiFi hotspot in addition to USB Tether and Bluetooth DUN. In USB mode it is capable of handling download speed of well above 35Mbps (35000kbps) and is the fastest tethering software available for Android.
Website :ht tp :/ / junefabrics. com /android/ delete spaces... my first post sry.
How to?
1 Install Program and follow setup steps.
2 When installation finished automatically the setup install the PDAnet app in your phone.
3 Now open PDAnet app and check Activate USB Tethe is marked.
4 Go to wifi settings in your device and enable wifi, now(in your device) search the wifi acces point what you want to connect.
You can see a new running network in your network connections center.
Compatibility
Android, Iphone, Windows Mobile,BlackBerry, PalmOS

Tethering - USB AND WIFI

Hi,
I know the phone is capable of doing both, and there are software/apps to do each function seperatly. But is there an app that does both for android phones?
I know Froyo has this capability built in... and will mostly likely be removed by samsung/tmobile. But here's hoping!
Thanks.

well you can do WiFi using either Wireless Tether or Barnacal. You can get Barnacal on the market. As for USB, thats prob not going to happen till we get some custom roms. For that you would need to alter the Kernal and firmware to acheive this.

I can't get barnicle or android wifi tether to work for more than a few minutes on my vibrant... Anyone else with more success?
You can USB tether your SGS to your computer out of the box. No rooting, no nothing.
For Windows:

Ugh. Barnacle Legacy works perfectly as does the newest version of Wifi tether.
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
Yes but there aren't any apps that do both?
Sent from my Samsung Vibrant using XDA App
Dang, both Barnacle and Wifi tether are giving me fits today. I know both of these are in active development, with new releases every other day it seems.
I am using the latest Barnacle available in the market, Version 24 as reported by the "Manage Applications" under settings. I don't see an "About" screen in the application, so I don't know what the *real* version is.
As for Wireless Tether, I am using version 23 as reported my the "manage applications" under settings, or 2.0.5-pre6 as reported by the About screen.

This method of tethering on Windows 7 works flawlessly. I've had issues using the Kies method and this fires up right away. It seems to be a little slower than the old wired tether app for my G1, but that could also be because I was tethering on the train in crappy weather. Barnacle works awesome on Windows if you follow these directions:
Baranacle Wifi Settings:
1. Change SSID - [User Preference]
2. Change Channel - 6
3. Custom Wifi Ad-hoc - NONE
4. Skip wpa_supplicant - CHECK
5. Restart Phone As Desired
Settings For Windows:
Open cmd.exe as administrator
C:\Windows\system32>netsh interface ipv4 set subinterface "Wireless Network Connection" mtu=1250 store=persistent
This is assuming your wireless network adapter is called "Wireless Network Connection"
Yeah, I have done all that and I am getting lots of errors:
NAT Restart: Network is down
And then a bunch of these:
Getting netmask of eth0 failed: cannot assign requested address
Followed by a couple instances of
NAT Restarting Now
NAT waiting for local interface
And yes, I have positively confirmed that I set the MTU on my computer.
And the Wireless Tether program now just run and then hangs. No FC, no nothing. When you press the big green icon to start the tether, you get the little animated spinner which freezes after a couple of seconds.
I'm trying to install Kies now.
I don't recommend installing Kies if you just want to USB tether. It's over 280 mb and the program itself kept crashing on me.
Just install the official drivers from Samsung's website then create a DUN connection based on the instructions in http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=737744.
Also, the official drivers on Samsung's download section are not up to date. The latest drivers are in the Kies install. I've zipped them up for x86 Windows users and put them online. You can download the zip and extract the files to your \Windows\System32\Drivers folder.
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/9387307/x86 Vibrant drivers from Kies.zip
for USB tether, I use PdaNet, it is super simple, no configuration needed on the phone or the computer... it works super fast and I've had no issues, just download the PdsNet desktop client and install on your PC and the PdaNet from the android market and done... you will be up and running in 5 minutes or less
That was perfect.
Posting over the DUN connection now. Thanks!

[Q] wifi-tethering/rooting help needed

Alright heres the deal, I'm using a usb connect with the app PdaNet to use the internet on my laptop. Now it says in their FAQ that I can use my Xbox on the same network by just enabling Internet Sharing on Windows over the PdaNet connection to share it with my game console. I did that, but when I went to start a game it kicked me off Live. But Live works fine when I'm in the dash. So I figured I try rooting my phone so that I could use the ad-hoc network that I have set up already between my comp and xbox. Only problem is that PdaNet says. "However if you want to connect your computer to your phone using (ad-hoc) WiFi, then this will require hacking the Android system for root access. For that reason we do not enable this feature in the Android version of PdaNet." So I need to find a way around this. Any ideas?
Your title is misleading. Wifi tethering isn't the same as rooting.
Ok...let me fix it then

[Q] Making Android Froyo connect to my PC through Ad-Hoc wifi

What about AdHoc wifi support in MDJ Android builds (or others)? I am using 'MDJ FroYo Sense Clean v. 2.3 [kernel: mdeejay #15]' and in no way i can enable adhox wifi...
I looked around a lot, and i found nothing that works:
*) There is this thread that fixes the problem by patching the wpa_supplicant binary, and provides a compiled one to put on your android, but the mentioned file doesn't even exist on Sense Clean, can this be integrated? or how does it work?
*) This blog entry explains how to enable ad hoc on Samsung Galaxy, but it uses wpa_cli, which is also not present on this android build
*) few threads and blogs explain about how to enable this by directly modifying the wpa_supplicant.conf (/data/misc/wifi/wpa_supplicant.conf) and tiwlan0.conf (/system/etc/wifi/tiwlan.ini) files, but seems that in latest builds this doesn't even work, and anyway, the tiwlan is not found in the mentioned location.
update to point 3:
as expected, ap_scan is removed from the conf file, and what i get is only that android tried to connect (Connecting to ssid, Authenticating to ssid) but then disconnects.
does anybody have a working solution?
If I am understanding your post rightly, you are looking for connecting your HD2 with the Internet connection of your computer, either WLAN or LAN fixed.
I have been looking around as well, as I am travelling a lot and in some parts of the world there is only plugged LAN connection available in hotels, so one cannot use an Android fone unless you want to push your roaming costs skywards!
However, I managed to connect the HD2 to the internet via my laptop with a free little program called Connectify and it is working flawlessly.
Works only under Windows 7 though.
Maybe this helps.
WinMo Goatrip 6.0
Android MDJ 1.3 Matted
MDJ S3 Kernel and very happy with it
SO, this Connectify will make you laptop wifi appear as if it is an Access Point and not AdHoc network, making any device connect to it?
Ok, but unfortunately it doesn't support my laptops intel wifi module (3945), that's the reason i've never checked what connectify really do. But i'll try with a usb wifi that i have.
Thanks for the tip...
Update:
Thanks !!! it worked !!!!!!
With an external usb wifi adapter that is supported by Connectify i was able to connect Android to the computers Wifi network, more than enough.
NO ROOT required!! - I am using MyTouch 4g with android 2.2.1
This is for anyone using Android who wanted to use Ad Hoc network to connect to internet (Android device connects to PC/laptop which is connected to internet) and couldn't because android doesn't support it ( Not rooted ). Here is a solution that DOESN'T require rooting the phone. I am running Android 2.2.1 and have no knowledge on compatibility despite my 2 days of research and eventual success.
Things you need: Windows 7, Android device and Connecitfy software ( link below... free version works just fine )
1. Update drivers for Ethernet and WiFi adapters in device settings... windows virtual WiFi miniport adapter should show up in the device list
2. Now startup Connectify: Create hotspot and choose password (uses WPA) and then start hotspot.
3. Now on your android device this network name should show up because its not Ad Hoc anymore. Its like a virtual router or hotspot.
4. NOTE: If google services fail on the android device. Go to account and settings and then sync now for your google login. Once synced, try opening android market and if it says authentication failed, try opening market two or three times more and it should eventually accept. If it doesn't... go find a solution and add to this post or create a blog.
5. Enjoy...hey hey wheres my treat!!

[Q] Tether instead of wifi???

Just wondering if there is a way to tether to a computer with a wired connection to get Internet connection that way, instead of using wifi??? There is lots of apps and stuff that need to connect to the internet to download, but I dont have the wifi's at home.
And if not, is it a hardware limitation, or software???
Handset in question is an Acer Liquid E
I've seen others ask this question & not get an answer that they wanted.
I'm not sure if its hardware, software or just lack of developer interest to create an app to do it.
The simple fact of the matter is that you can pick up a cheap router for $20 that'll solve the issue for you. It's not the solution you want, but it might be the only one available to you.
Heres another thread, it might have suggestions (or updates) that will be useful for you:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=554852
you are right that is definately not the answer that Im looking for, as i have a good wireless router, but i live with a Internet Nazi that doesn't want to have wireless in the household.
But thanks for the link, I'll definitely check it out : )

The best I can recommend is having a wireless card in your laptop and creating a ad-hoc network, but if I am not mistaken, the ad-hoc network is not supported on a android device.
You could always do a quick search for some software on the internet that support it, but good luck with that.
You could always convince the internet nazi to use mac address filtering on the router to ensure that only the devices you use are allowed to connect.
Don't know anything about your phone, but both WM and Android phones gladly hooks up to a comp using USB-wire (which is faster than any wireless).
WM6.5 have a program icon called Internet sharing something.
while Android got a pay/trial app called Easy Tether that for the same job.
Be aware that some provider do not allow hooking-up a computer on some cellphone plans, call your provider and ask them.
Using both a X10 Mini(Android) and a M1i Aspen(WM6.5) connected by wire both for file transfer peer2peer and Internet access.
Also there are Bluetooth and a possibility to remove the memory card from the phone and copy files to it in a card reader on a computer.
PDAnet
The only thing I can think of is an app called PDANet on the market, you do need internet to download it on your computer, but if it's a laptop, just take it to a wifi hotspot, like Starbucks or something and download the computer app, then tether all you want
PDAnet
No need to go to a wifi hotspot with the laptop to get the computer drivers for pdanet. You can do it right from the phone, it will download to your sdcard then all you do is mount the sdcard to the comp via usb and open the .exe file, load the drivers and start tethering. Only thing with PDAnet is you cant access secure websites with the free version. But it is an AWESOME app non the less.

FoxFi WiFi direct with PDANet works for Turbo 2

Apologies if this is already known, but I couldn't find anything on it when searching.
Many years ago I bought the paid version of FoxFi when I had my Razr before root options were available. On a whim, I installed it to see if the USB tethering would work with PdaNet. Not only did I find that USB tethering works, but WiFi direct also works under the PdaNet options. I know this isn't a totally free option (I think the free version of FoxFi either limits total data and/or turns off intermittently), but it does work very well. You can also download PdaNet for your computer from your phone and transfer it via USB cable - so you can still make this work if you have no other internet connection than your phone. Hope this helps.

I also have the paid version and have been trying to get it to work with my Firestick with no luck... I looked for a tutorial on how to set it up but couldn't find one. I tried WPS and inputting the password manually. What did your successfully connect to?

PdaNet seems to have to be installed on the client device. In my case a computer. PDANet can be downloaded from PDANet.co (not .com). To my knowledge PdaNet only works on Mac, Windows, and Android - so a TV (if that's what you're using) may not work. I am currently posting this from my computer using PdaNet + FoxFi as it's the only internet connection I have available during the week.
I didn't have any luck with the WPS - not sure where the issue is/was, but entering the password in manually has been very trouble free. I can watch Netflix and Youtube without issue, but Twitch seems to have some issues. I haven't tried gaming yet (though the connection was good enough to get my games updated) - but hope to soon.

Cool, yes, I got it working on a windows computer, but wasn't able to get it to work on the Firestick streaming device. Not a TV.
Can you use Wi-Fi Direct to your PC and then use the WiFi share function to your firestick?
If you have Windows 10 on your PC you can usb tether (or wifi direct) the computer to your phones internet, then use the windows 10 mobile hotspot option to broadcast the signal to your other devices. I have my firestick hooked up with this setup, and my Xbox 1 too.
---------- Post added at 01:34 AM ---------- Previous post was at 01:27 AM ----------
If you don't have Windows 10 you can tether your PC, then go to network and sharing center, click on change adapter settings, then right click the tethered connection with internet, hit properties, then the sharing tab, click the box on that says "allow other network users blah blah blah", then select the other connection that you wish to have internet. Before I started using Windows 10 this is how I would hook up my Xbox 1 through the Ethernet connection via PDANET+ usb tether. Works perfectly.
So I noticed it doesn't work on the Sticks. But it does work on the Pendant and Cube. The latter devices show a VPN prompt on the first time. I think that may have something to do with it.
