[Q] Add .PDF to Google Playbooks - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello guys, I have a Nexus 7 with several books downloaded from Google Play. However, a friend just sent me a .rar with about 200 books and I want to add them to Google Play Book.
I've been trying to look for the folder where the downloaded books are but couldn't find it; as you probably know there is no option to manually add books within the application...so I have 2 choices, either force the .pdf into the app or read them with another app, but I really like PlayBook and as I already have quite a library there, I want to use it for the new books that my friend sent me.
Is there any way to do this?
In case there is no way: How can I export my PlayBook books so I can add them to another app and have everything in one place?

Easiest way is just to download a PDF reader from Google Play.

That's exactly what I want to avoid, I'm some kind of organization freak and I like to have everything in one place and enjoy the features of the app with everything that can be done with it...so I would REALLY prefer to find a way to add the .pdf books to the Google Play Book app

Not possible

Looking for Readers hub APK (Tab Version of KOBO specifically)

Hey first off, great site, been a droid phone user for a long time, but found this forum searching for tab info and im digging this site.
Im looking for KOBO for the tablet (not the kobo app available in the market). I don't know if i accidentally deleted it thinking it was bloatware or if it's a UK only app (i read both not really sure which is true)
I found a couple people on this forum looking for exactly the same thing, but all the links posted did not work...
I really really need the KOBO tab app, but if you have the whole readers hub that would be great as i would love to try it out. I will gladly share any of my apps if you are looking for a US version of something, or if you need some verizon bloatware ive got plenty of that!
Thanks for the help, and HUGE thanks to all the devs!

If you're on a US carrier, the kobo app is not included. So as the readers hub. If you installed kono by itself it won't show on the app drawer. You have to create a short cut for the app using launcher pro.
But if you want kobo to be on your app drawer you will have to install readers hub + kobo. It will show readers hub on your app drawer then you open it and inside you will see kobo.
The spk for both kobo and readers hub is on the "themes and apps" section.
Ok great, thanks so much for that info. Did alot more searching and finally found it, it was named Zinio which is the magazine app which made it hard to find but if anyone is looking for it here is the link.

But now my question is on the mobile version it had an "import" button to upload your ebooks into it. I tapped the menu key on all pages but i don't see an import. Is this done by uploading your epub files into a folder?
Also i saw plenty of videos which showed this app has animated turning pages this does not and it is defintely the tablet version, i am certain of it. I don't get how they can advertise KOBO on american TV and then not include it on the US version. I can't stand how these carriers ruin something good. So frustrated right now, never had such a hard time with freaking ebooks!

Zinio is for magazines. Kobo is the ebook reader.
I am aware of that, the zip i linked has the entire readers hub inside zinio, kobo the newspaper and the hub itself (dont know why the zip was named zinio). The kobo file included is def not the version available in the market but wont let me import and for some reason doesnt have the animated page turn. Seems like the right version but maybe its outdated or something? Because its not the same as the one in the market ans not the same as the videos ive seen of it running on the tablet.
Thanks again for all the help
The one advertised on tv is eBook. That's the one with page turning. Not sure it's on all the American versions.

Hey clovis, i see you asked the person who posted the ebook.apk file how to install it. I can't for the life of me figure it out, tried with installers, putting it in system/app, and just a regular apk install, just can't get it. Did you have any luck with it?

i have the reader hub apk and the kobo apk. all i did on mine was install reader hub first then kobo after. then it appeared on my app drawer. i have the file on my computer, i can send it to you as soon as i get home.
In reply to all of you who wish to download and import books into Samsung Galazy tab- I got mine from T-mo
1-From "market" app search for kobo - click and download it for free
2-click home > thumbnails for apps > kobo should appear on the last page of thumbnails
3-connect galaxy tab to your pc/laptop via USB cable provided
4- click on "mass storage" when the screen appears on Galaxy tab; then click "mount" --- this would allow the device to be read on the computer --- a window will appear on PC showing the device; open it. On the galaxy tab you will see a screen with the android and the "turn off" button underneath it. Leave it as is, ignore the tablet for now; focus solely on the pc
5-once you've opened the device from the PC, on the left column you will see a folder named Kobo.
6-now from your computer, open and drag the folder that contains all your epub format books and drop it into the Kobo folder of the galaxy tab
7- now close or eject the device from the computer, then turn your attention back to the Galaxy tab; now press the "turn off" button. Disconnect the usb cord from the computer
8- from the galaxy, open the Kobo app, tap on "menu" the first icon on the left bottom of the galaxy device, the one on the left of "home" - from the menu choose "import content". Kobo will search for the epub books and download them after you agree and tap on the "start" button.
Hope this help

You can download it from the market under its real name, Laputa.
It's mostly ****e compared to Aldiko, though.

Google Books (wifi only) fix

Google Books website has the solution, although it took some digging to find it.
Go to Settings...Applications...Manage...All
Scroll down until you see "Google Partner Setup"
Open it
"Clear Data"
reboot
You should now be able to launch Google books and see the 3 preloaded books.
props to girkmonster

U.S. only perhaps?
I just factory reset my xoom to take back (to get the screen fixed) - or i would have tried this in uk...
... re set up my device anyway - done the above - and no google books... doesn't seem to work on the UK vers...
https://supportforums.motorola.com/message/365897
Lothaen, I cant even install google books in the uk, market says its not available on my carrier, but it's a wifi xoom... any ideas?
Google books is only available in US.
There are ways to install it anyway, but what's the point? You can't buy any books anyway if you are not in US.
I thought it was pre-installed....
also i thought(hoped) you'd be able to add your own epub/pdf's in.
I'll have to get alkido again then

I was also interested in this and searched a little. I didn't find a way to side load anything to google books app, so I didn't see a point in trying to get it working.
But there was a thread here where was a guide how to get books working, of course i'm not sure if it will work on the European Xoom. Try to search if interested.
I'm in exactly the same position Lothaen, Books is a non-starter for us in the UK.
I am wondering though if one of our American friends with root access could backup the Books apk with Titanium and let us have it? Don't know if it's possible but worth a shot... can anyone help please?
In the meantime I'm using Nook as Aldiko keeps FCing on me.

This is interesting, I searched but didn't find anything about sideloading, other then forum posts saying its impossible.
Does the UK Xoom have books under Settings> Applications?
If it is there, then a how to get it working is posted somewhere here in the forums.
Sorry I edited my earlier post as I thought I'd seen a post on sideloading but can't find it anymore.
Books isn't on by default on the UK version

[Q] Text To Speech on Fire?

Hey guys,
I was wondering if anyone has tried to install Liquendo Susan or any other tts engine on the fire? I use it with moon reader plus on my Infuse 4g running 2.2 Froyo and it works for epub books at least. I really dont want to go to all the trouble of rooting this thing to find out it wont work. I dont think I will be keeping it if I cant get it to read books to me. The android stuff is cool and all but my phone does all that stuff.
Its my own damn fault for asuming Amazon would inculde a TTS engine like thier previous versions. Really sad about this because I like it otherwise. I have rooted my phone so I think I can root the device but dont know if its worth all the risk and trouble if it wont run a TTS engine.
Thanks for your help, love the forum keep up the good work.
Doc
have'nt tried this and can't remember to to have read about it in the forum
you can be the first and share your experience
can't think why it should not work
I installed Liquendo Susan and the test works fine... but there is no way to activate it for the device as a default.
To the best of my knowledge, TTS does not work on the Kindle app.

Thanks Guys,
Here is the thing. I have this setup working on my Infuse 4g. The kindle app isnt used for reading I use Moon+ Reader Pro with TTS option. I have to convert my kindle books to .epub in calibre but it works. I can get decent TTS reading on my phone. Let me perhaps be a bit more clear on my question.
IF I root the phone and install Liquendo Suasan TTS engine, Moon+ Reader Pro (both of which I would have to repurchase and download from the Android market) and then used Moon+ Reader to read .epub converstions that I moved on and off the Fire via.. Dropbox lets say.. do you think other than surrendering almost 1GB of storage for this setup, would that be a functional work around on the Fire? I know it works on 2.2 Froyo but that is on a phone that came with PICO installed as a default engine.
Apparently the demo version of Liquendo worked, there is part of the answer, any thoughts on the rest?
Thanks,
DOC
ONLY the demo worked within the app itself. NOTHING else would use Liquendo Suasan. I could find no way to activate it as the TTS. Unless you can do that, it won't do what you are asking.
BTW, I didn't need to repurchase it. I just side loaded it from my Droid Incredible which I purchased it on.

LumiRead app force-closing....

So I have a boatload of books on my Iconia, and I really do like the LumiRead app, so far its the only reader I like that handles pdfs the way I want it to. However... when it gets down to about number 200 on my list, when scrolling through them using the book shelf view, the app force closes every single time. I cant find the app on the marketplace so I dony know if its missing an update or something else, but I would like to continue to use it. Anyone have this problem? Know how to fix it or possibly know if they have an update for it?
Sent from my A500 using xda premium
I also had FCs and it was caused by corrupt epub. As soon as I removed it was working just fine.
You can also try to Clear Data within Manage Application for LumiRead and re-import your books.
Just make sure you backup all your books.

Istalling apps on a rooter nook simple touch

Hi
I used NookManager to root the device, but I dont know how to install more apps mainly apps like cool reader. aldiko etc., I can see Amazon app store but not Google Play Store - How do I go about this, do I need to first Google Play Store app first from some other source and start downloading other apps via that?
Also, I wanted to have the no refresh to be activated to reduce the screen refresh and flashing. How to do this please.
I also saw this video on YouTube:here. Please advice me as to how to achieve this,
I want pinch zoom to view comics and magazines with heavy layout and images while still maintaining the font resize feature typical to e-reader.
thanks
S
Anyone out there?

If you continue reading that thread I linked to there's instructions on how to get Google apps on the device. I personally use Dropbox for uploading apps to and then download them to the Nook.
