[Q] Tethering (Wifi or USB) from my Nexus 4 - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

EDIT: As of May 25th, 2013, I have still NOT fixed this issue.
---------------------------
I have a major issue about tethering (USB and wifi) from my N4.
Here's my info that's hopefully sufficient.
Carrier: T-Mobile
Plan: 30 dollars (unlimited data [throttled at 5GB]/unlimited text/100 min)
ROM: CM 10.1 nightlies (5/1/2013 nightly)
Kernel: franco Kernel (Milestone 2)
Rooted: Yes
Unlocked: Yes
What I want: I want to tether (extremely prefer for it to be wirelessly) to my laptop/iPad with ease.
Devices I'm trying to tether:
1. Windows 7 64-bit desktop with wireless USB adapter.
2. Another Nexus 4 from my girlfriend (on Paranoid Android)
3. iPad running iOS 5, jailbroken
Attempts:
1. Tried using built-in wireless. It has a connection to connect to, but it says "limited connectivity". Cannot use internet.
1a. I've tried using Wifi Tether (https://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/).
It doesn't work on "Auto" device profile.
It doesn't work with "Generic ICS/JB (wlan0 OR wlan1)". It worked with "Generic". I haven't tried the rest.
Result is that it is able to set-up the tether and have nothing failing in the "Show Log". However, my two laptops cannot detect them. My iPad sees it but cannot connect. It just says "cannot connect" and doesn't even ask me to input the password.
1b. I've used Barnacle Tether. Doesn't even work.
1c. I'm willing to try FoxFi and others I see, but I really do want Wifi Tether to work.
2. Tried using built-in USB tether. Doesn't work. It says "no connection" when done on my computer. Cannot use internet.
3. Tried using Wifi Tether. I cannot connect to it via iPad nor computer.
4. Tried using Clockwork USB tether. IT WORKS! HOWEVER, why only that method? Built-in USB doesn't work, nor do the other methods I tried. It's also annoying with the USB.
EDIT: T-Mobile finally figured out I was tethering. I was NOT using a user agent changer.
I have tried to search the general troubleshoot forum and also the franco Kernel and CM 10.1 threads about tethering issues, but it seems as if other people with my plan/kernel/ROM are getting tethering to work properly.
Any help would be appreciated, thanks!

Tried using AOKP w/ faux kernel, still the same result.
I am thinking it is less due to the ROM, but I'm still not sure.

what is your issue exactly? what happens when you try to tether?

I have a stock Nexus 4 and have a similar issue with Wifi tethering.
Once I enable it other devices (a Galaxy Tab2 and an iPhone 3GS) can see the tether and connect to it successfully. Unfortunately, there is no transmission of data (through the browser or email client on either device).
I'm in the UK on Orange monthly tariff.
Any thoughts?

i've had exactly the same exerience as yours trying to tether a blackberry playbook to my N4. i was hoping it was the playbook!
i'm also on Orange.
i used to tether my previous android Hd2 using its wifi hotspot no problem.

Try different cable
I had the same problem and it was driving me crazy. I reloaded windows and tried all kinds of drivers. As it turns out the problem was the usb cable. After using a different cable everything started to work. I don't know if this helps but that was my experience

hi OP,
did you ever get the wifi hotspot working?

My hotspot works with PDAnet but not just using the android system.

Success! :good:
i fixed my tethering problems with Orange (EE) by simply phoning up customer support and asking them to switch on tethering. this was no problem for them. it apparently needs to be enabled at base. there is no charge for this and i was given a "1GB cap" which presumably comes off my 1GB data bundle.
i didn't have to make any changes in my phone settings.
a "service update" text came soon thereafter and following a restart the phone has since been tethering perfectly to my laptop and BB playbook.

I'm on stock android 4.2 and my native tether works fine. Maybe it is a cm issue
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda premium

Using stock here and works fine. You are turning WiFi off, right?

I succesfully connected my Nexus 4 to my PC using USB tethering by installing the "Remote NDIS based Internet Sharing Device" driver manually:
open the Device Manager
select "Nexus 4" and choose "Update Driver Software..."
choose "Browse my computer for driver software"
choose "Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer"
select "Microsoft Corporation" in the left column
choose "Remote NDIS based Internet Sharing Device" in the right column

I still haven't found a solution and I've searched the N4 forums thoroughly. I've tried the VPN + Wifi Tether tweaked app. No luck.

That seems do-able, but really quite annoying. I have already found a USB tethering method that works but I will try this out when I have time.
Thanks. I'm still looking for a wireless method though.
It was dirt easy to tether on Virgin Mobile... Then again it was a different phone/ROM/plan.

For me what fixed the problem (partially) is enabling USB Debugging. That way I can tether via usb. Using the phone as a hotspot is still a no go. My Windows 8 laptop connects to the network however there's no internet access.

never had any issues tethering wirelessly or wired with tmobile, 5 years going strong(started with the g1). what kind of security settings are you using with the wireless tether built into the n4? im currently using wpa psk for security in the tether settings.

the problem is franco kernel. I had the same issue and basically flashed every other kernel and tethering started working.
EDIT: I flashed back to stock kernel and back. now franco kernel works.

I too had this exact problem. The 'stable' version 'Milestone 3' of the franco kernel would not connect correctly for USB tethering. My Windows 7 box would see the connection, but there was no internet. Flashing back to stock and faux kernels worked, and also the lasted nightly #163 franco kernel works (for me).
Hopefully this info helps someone else.

Built in Wi Fi Tether not working in CM 5.0.2

Sorry to post as a new thread, I found this question 4 times asked in the original thread and no one seem to answer it, maybe it's just skipped.
After having installed CM 5.0.2, plugging the phone to PC and making sure the drivers are working properly, nothing happens.
No wi fi tethering, no "modem found" or any similar sign.
What do you recommend.
Thanks..
Edit: I am on Windows XP
??
When you've plugged your phone to the pc you need to youse wired tether and not wifi tether.
Or I'm getting this wrong what you're saying?

Yes, built in wired tether is not working as I described.
did you check your network connections?
I just tested on mine on my desktop here and it works just fine. I'm posting from my desktop USB tethered to my phone now.
shows up as "Remote NDIS based Internet Sharing Device" in network connections
Go to settings, then wireless settings, then check internet tethering.

Tethering - USB AND WIFI

Hi,
I know the phone is capable of doing both, and there are software/apps to do each function seperatly. But is there an app that does both for android phones?
I know Froyo has this capability built in... and will mostly likely be removed by samsung/tmobile. But here's hoping!
Thanks.

well you can do WiFi using either Wireless Tether or Barnacal. You can get Barnacal on the market. As for USB, thats prob not going to happen till we get some custom roms. For that you would need to alter the Kernal and firmware to acheive this.

You can USB tether your SGS to your computer out of the box. No rooting, no nothing.

Dang, both Barnacle and Wifi tether are giving me fits today. I know both of these are in active development, with new releases every other day it seems.
I am using the latest Barnacle available in the market, Version 24 as reported by the "Manage Applications" under settings. I don't see an "About" screen in the application, so I don't know what the *real* version is.
As for Wireless Tether, I am using version 23 as reported my the "manage applications" under settings, or 2.0.5-pre6 as reported by the About screen.

This method of tethering on Windows 7 works flawlessly. I've had issues using the Kies method and this fires up right away. It seems to be a little slower than the old wired tether app for my G1, but that could also be because I was tethering on the train in crappy weather. Barnacle works awesome on Windows if you follow these directions:
Baranacle Wifi Settings:
1. Change SSID - [User Preference]
2. Change Channel - 6
3. Custom Wifi Ad-hoc - NONE
4. Skip wpa_supplicant - CHECK
5. Restart Phone As Desired
Settings For Windows:
Open cmd.exe as administrator
C:\Windows\system32>netsh interface ipv4 set subinterface "Wireless Network Connection" mtu=1250 store=persistent
This is assuming your wireless network adapter is called "Wireless Network Connection"
Yeah, I have done all that and I am getting lots of errors:
NAT Restart: Network is down
And then a bunch of these:
Getting netmask of eth0 failed: cannot assign requested address
Followed by a couple instances of
NAT Restarting Now
NAT waiting for local interface
And yes, I have positively confirmed that I set the MTU on my computer.
And the Wireless Tether program now just run and then hangs. No FC, no nothing. When you press the big green icon to start the tether, you get the little animated spinner which freezes after a couple of seconds.
I'm trying to install Kies now.
I don't recommend installing Kies if you just want to USB tether. It's over 280 mb and the program itself kept crashing on me.
Just install the official drivers from Samsung's website then create a DUN connection based on the instructions in http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=737744.
Also, the official drivers on Samsung's download section are not up to date. The latest drivers are in the Kies install. I've zipped them up for x86 Windows users and put them online. You can download the zip and extract the files to your \Windows\System32\Drivers folder.
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/9387307/x86 Vibrant drivers from Kies.zip
for USB tether, I use PdaNet, it is super simple, no configuration needed on the phone or the computer... it works super fast and I've had no issues, just download the PdsNet desktop client and install on your PC and the PdaNet from the android market and done... you will be up and running in 5 minutes or less
That was perfect.
Posting over the DUN connection now. Thanks!

[Q] USB tethering (T-Mobile, UK)

The wi-fi hotspot works great on my phone but I can't get USB tethering to work. I wouldn't bother with tethering but the awful battery life on the Desire HD makes this an attractive option since it gives me Internet access on my laptop while the battery charges on my phone (obviously, wi-fi sharing does not do this).
But when I use the "USB tethering" option when I connect my phone to my laptop, it doesn't work. I initially got a device driver error but now, when I connect the phone, I get nothing - no errors, it connects, but nothing happens and I can't access the Internet.
Is this a T-Mobile (UK) issue? Has T=M disabled USB tethering? Or do I need a driver? Or does USB tethering just not work (for anyone)?
Did you install HTC Sync? It install the necessary drivers for USB tethering to work.

Do you have to do this ?
The reason I ask is that I'm thinking if I'm travelling and I want to quickly hook my phone up to someone's machine and do tethering via the USB I won't be able to do it if I don't have HTC Sync, if that is the case that would be balls !

silly question, but why don't you connect the device to your PC in charging mode only, then fire up the WIFI hotspot?

[Q] Can anyone here properly Tether with Froyo and Windows 7?

- Ive been trying to use the built in wifi tether and usb tether and neither work.
- I'm able to connect to the wireless AP but i cannot get an IP address
- Ive tried PDANet and that works, so i can only assume other third party ones will also work.
- I have an HTC Desire. Ive tried using OpenDesire (many, many different revisions) and Oxygen. Both by AdamG, but i doubt it makes a difference.
- I can tether with the built in Froyo tether function on a macbook pro. Which means the problem is with Windows 7!
Am i missing a step?
A couple times to get it to work properly on my Droid, I had to run a command prompt as admin and force an IP renew for my internet to connect/work.
using Wireless tether for root I was able to use my internet from the 3g on a windows 7 laptop (incurred a HUGE bill from Vodafone UK, they know I didn't use my phone to browse and charged me) but it worked.
...I cant believe doing a release renew worked lmao
thanks!
No issue on stock Nexus
I use Wi-Fi tethering almost every day; it works even better than USB tethering with my old Nokia phone. I have a stock HTC Desire as designated in my signature and a Sony VAIO with Windows 7 Professional x64. Tethering to an iPad also works great.
PDANet only does USB and Bluetooth as far as I can remember. Anyhow, I think the fact that you can't USB tether points to a Windows driver issue. Strangely enough, I've had driver issues myself - then I realized that I don't need USB. I just use an FTP and Wi-Fi tethering works as expected anyway.
Useing Wi-Fi tethering every day & USB tethering once in a while with no issues. It's my Nexus FRG83D to Windows 7 Home Premium x64. Sounds like your PC drivers...
I already fixed it. Thanks.

Bluetooth pairs but won't connect

I have successfully paired my nexus 7 to my evo 3d and my HP laptop. However, it will not connect to either one. There is no connect option visible either. Both the laptop and my evo 3d connect fine to each other and other Bluetooth devices. Is my nexus 7 faulty or am I missing something?
Edit: ok it connects fine to my Bluetooth headphones, so why won't it connect to my phone or my laptop?

Not sure if this helps, but I have Verizon and it seems that they block Bluetooth tethering while on 4G LTE. I could get my phone and nexus 7 to pair, but wouldn't connect. However when I switches my phone to 3G, my tablet and phone connected no problem. Its nice BC when they are connected your tablet automatically uses your phones internet. If I just want to use 3G, I go this route. When I want to connect them while my phone is on 4G LTE, I have to use foxfi/pdanet.
In other words connecting while the phone is on 4G seems to be blocked. Switch to 3G and see if that doesn't work to connect.
Hope this helps.

I have the same issue as you. It may be that our phone don't have the right BT Profile for "Internet Access".
Are there any other options? I've tried FoxFi and that didn't create the "Internet Access" profile either. I'm on a Samsung Stratosphere with 2.3.

I have also been trying to tether my new Nexus 7 with my old Xperia X10 mini. I can pair but not connect. I can't access my Bluetooth settings on my Nexus. I can't pass files vie Bump either. I can't get the wifi tether to the phone working either: My phone doesn't allow me to download Foxfi, my phone says PDAnet doesn't work on my version of Android. I bought the Nexus in the UK but I'm using it in Germany. My phone is with O2 which typically requires an additional €20 charge to tether. Any advice would be appreciated.
I think you folks are missing a setting?
Hi
Aside from pairing, on the device whose connection is being shared (i.e the phone), you need to goto settings-->More-->Tethering And Portable Hotspot, and make sure that 'bluetooth tethering' is selected.
This works on my Galaxy Note. 4.04 ICS
No 3rd party apps are required to do this. Note that Bluetooth PAN only came to android in 3.0. If your phone runs 2.3x or below, you'll need the software discussed elsewhere in this thread to make BT tethering work.
Whatever internet connection the phone has is shared, whether wifi or 3g
NB: Its a bit flakey! OK once connected, but requires BT to be cycled off/on on both ends...

Theres a wee bug in android where after a new pair, restart, or occasionally on bluetooth disconnections bluetooth tethering will become disabled on the host device.
Go to the device with the Internet Connection and (on ICS / JB) hit Settings -> More -> Tethering & portable hotspot -> Bluetooth tething and check it.
You'll have to redo this regularly but combined with an occasional bluetooth off/on unpair / repair this will work.
(Nexus 7 / Galaxy Nexus - both rooted stock)
Hi
If you don't have the screen below (or equiv) mentioned in my previous post, then you wont be able to tether without using 3rd party apps. I guess the BT PAN profile is missing where this option is not available.

Thanks for this. All was working fine between my UK (stock European with a few Vodafone apps) Samsung Galaxy S3 (SIII) and Note 10.1 until I upgraded to 4.1.1 on my S3. It seems this option was added then or disabled by default. All working splendidly now, cheers.
Droid Razr Nexus 7 connection
All,
You can tether the 4G LTE on a nexus 7 you just have to enable bluetooth tetheriing in Setting > Tethering & Mobile Hotspot > Bluetooth tethering
Without doing this, it won't link via bluetooth tethering. As for laptop, you have to allow access point in your laptop in order to allow the Nexus 7 to fully connect to your laptop to share files.
Cheers!
This thread has the most similar problems that I have. By me the problem is opposite. I need to get internet connection on my phone (xperia U) and the only way is through tethering through my iphones hotspot. Bluetooth says paired but not connected and wifi hotspot isn't found in the list of wifi networks.
Bluetooth tethering worked fine on ICS but I downgraded to GB and now nothing. I can't install 3rd party apps yet because no internet on phone.
Is there no other option? Is it either GB, lag free phone but no tethering option or laggy ICS phone with tethering??
