So you have that new Raspberry Pi all set up with Raspbian and you to use it you have to connect a keyboard and mouse. Maybe you share this keyboard and mouse with another computer (like me) or maybe you have the Raspberry Pi hidden in a console (again, like me) and it's difficult to plug in your devices.
OK, here is a solution so simple it is unreal.
Plug in that keyboard and mouse for the last time OR SSH to your Raspberry Pi (you do have SSH set up right?), open the terminal and type:
sudo apt-get install xrdp
If you did not SSH in then you will need to run this command also to get the ip address of the Raspberry Pi:
ifconfig eth0
Note the IP address.
For LInux:
Install the following:
sudo apt-get install rdesktop
then run
rdesktop (IP address of your Raspberry Pi)
then at the Login to xrdp:
User name of your Raspberry Pi
Password of your Raspberry Pi
Profit!
Non-Linux:
windoze-
start remote desktop and enter IP address then follow Login to xrdp steps above.
fruit systems-
try installing this: http://cord.sourceforge.net/ and then connect to the Raspberry Pi as above.
Or, you can install tightvnc.

For X Window apps, the best way to run is ’ssh -X [email protected]_IP’.
Of course we need an X server running, but I’m a linux user.
You just solved a bit problem for me
Actually two.
1. As I do not have a TV or monitor with HDMI input, I had to use this converter for VGA and the display is crappy. The very first thing I do on such RPi is enabling SSH. But from now on, all I have is SSH. I now have much better to work and mnage my RPi's. COOL !!!!!
2. I was also having an issue with my virtual servers, one of which hosts an install of the Android development tools. So far, I was using NX to connect, but since some version of Ubuntu, I could not start an Android VM remotely. Some missing modules, or configuration. I hated this. I was using NX for a long time now. This xrdp seems to work fine. I installed it on a test machine with Android SDK stuff, and voila !! I can start the virtual Android machine no problem.

I have a similar problem, except that I share my monitor with my son and his Raspberry Pi. Both of us are building and programming different robots using the RPi and arduino controllers. So I get very little time at the actual keyboard. I did something similar except I am using tightvnc on the RPI and then Remote Ripple on my Nexus 10 and Kyocera phone and then tightvnc java viewer on my windows laptop (if I ever use it, mostly just a cloud print server) . The Nexus 10 being the main computer I use along with my RPi. Full GUI of my RPi Xwindow or SSH shell account on the RPI. (if you can do it on the RPi, you can do it on your nexus! (except remote raspicam/raspivideo.. not yet available.. it will be though!)).
Several different ways to do this, to each their own... but I wanted my N10 client to be made by the same developer as the VNC server. Tightvnc has a large following, so that is good. I did have to pay $5 for the Android version Remote Ripple (tightvnc android client). But I don't mind supporting the authors of quality software (not forced too.. hear that MS!)
you do feel a lag from being on a wireless network, but it is nice being able to log it anytime from anywhere (not just home wifi, I can also use my PI over the internet!)

To use the pre installed terminal server you need to turn on remote desktop (winxp pro) and input your ip address on the wizard in the terminal server application, as long as your firewall is configured to allow the connection you should be able to control your pc using the software you already have, alternatively you can use services like log me in etc.

I use logmein.com's basic, free service. simple, quick, encrypted and you dont have to remember ip's or anything.
try http://gomyplace.com/ if you need something simple just to browse files on the remote and execute commands in the command shell
you will need just a regular internet browser to access the remot host
free, open source (GPL), works in NATed, firewalled environments, dynamic IPs, etc.
runs on Linux/Win32/Mac requires Java on the host machine
client needs only internet browser
Linux
PocketPuTTy is the way to go for connecting to a linux machine remotely, I'm using the latest dev build on my PDA and haven't found any issues yet, although i have only been using it for about 2 days. It works fine on the screensize too as its only command line.
Windows
I wouldn't even bother with command line for windows, as its horribly underpowered and wont provide you with much usability. It is possible to run SSH on windows, but like I said, I would see no reason too.
I used to have a VNC client for my old Axim X50 which ran great, it supported screen scaling, so it would fit my entire 1600x1280 screen onto the PDA no problems, and zoomed in when I required. It was only really usable to perform very simple tasks, but thats all I needed. Unfortunately I don't remember the clients name, however there are a number on the market that provide the same features.. maybe trying the following?

I use realVNC for my server. Oh and any VNC client should work with any VNC server, so if you installed VNC on linux, this should work fine.

i use teamviewer to take over my pc and it works really great.
You can also try Remote Desktop by Xtralogic. It's a little expensive but works flawlessly.

To control my computer like a remote control I use Unified remote (control key/mouse + lots of apps)
To control from outside, Use any VNC and/or RDP client
(Haven't got an Arc yet ; still running an old and tragic non-S Samsung Galaxy on Android 1.6.)
Remote VNC Pro (with ads) works for me as a client. Connects finely to RealVNC or TightVNC servers installed on the computers.
[Quite laggy, though - don't think these are the most efficient protocols to be using and you'll get fed up if you're using them for very long. But they're cross-platform and pretty much free...]

Can I control my home PC (windows7) with my TF? To be more specific: I own a projector and have a Home Theater room. I want to be able to see the same on my TF tablet as what is shown on my projector, so kind of like a secondary monitor.

- by default, requires setting up NAT to access from outside LAN
- no sound I don't think

+ sends audio as well
+ excellent quality picture
+ easy to use outside LAN (no worries regarding portforwarding if you login with google)
- no linux client
note: splashtop 2 isn't free if you want to connect from outside your LAN
note2: if you choose this, try find Splashtop THD, it's optimized for Tegra, but not accessible through market on TF101 by default.

Just tried teamviever (first program I tried) but don t like it for 2 reasons:
- cannot use TF hardware KB+MOUSE
- screen isn t filled fully (although it will become tiny if full screen but that does not matter to me)
btw.: Splahtop THD seems to be only for Tegra 3 devices. The TF1 (non-prime) is Tegra 2.
yeah, teamviewer is different. It's better for phones I think - but I prefer it's interface now after some time. My fingers are too stubby just to try and press the start bar or whatever.
Regarding the screen, you can pinch to zoom to fill the screen. Also, in the settings when connected, you can adjust the resolution to match the screen.
Regarding splashtop THD, as I said, you wont find it in the market on the TF101. Perhaps you can think of a different way to acquire it, which I'm not necessarily condoning, involving google and the term "APK". It will install on the TF101. It's a lot smoother and better than regular splashtop though.
I would use just splashtop THD over teamviewer, it's just there's no linux client for splashtop which is a must for me.
RDP
I prefer the 2X app. It uses RDP and the terminal-server capabilities of W7 prof.
HW-mouse and HW-keyboard are working fine.
Logmein
Logmein works good and also lets you control any computer including Mac. Keyboard/dock works.
I use pocketcloud, has RDP and VNC and it has never failed me yet. I would choose any vnc based solution last for win7 prof since prof has RDP functionality and one of the features is auto resize of the whole desktop when you log in which comes in handy since i hate scrolling around

It's absolutly amazin and works like a charm! There is a free version for 1 connecton and the paid version is at discount price on the moment normally 8 euros, and now it's 2 euro's. It's worth it!

Also give a try to TeamViewer. It doesn't use RDP but you can install it on Windows as a service.
On the tablet the remote desktop will be resized without changing the remote screen resolution. Furthermore its tablet useability is awesome. Just give it a try... it's free for non commercial use. I use it even on my Nexus S!
Some names: Splashtop (free for our tablet), teamviewer, LogMeIn (a little bit expansive). My choice? The first one.

I started off using pocketcloud because it used RDP. I'd highly suggest you at least try using splashtop as it's a lot quicker I found than pocketcloud.
I always Think of the fire TV as an amazing device mostly for entertainment but it's can be used as Computer either for Mac or PC and becoming very productive Machine...
For example:
I used Microsoft Excel and work with my keyboard and mouse to write on the big screen and the experience feel the same as Desktop computer
As well if you don't want to spend a lot of money to make Plex server you could use this method which is easy in my opinion to works with, and does not require a lot of setup.
The possibilities are endless lets me know what's would you use it for ?

Has anyone been able to make VNC / RDP on NST usable for text editing? I know it's not practical, since we are limited by the protocol, e-ink refresh, and the 800x600 resolution, but I just wanted to see if it can be done. With NoRefresh on, I've tried:

I've tried x11vnc and xrdp on Linux, built-in screen sharing and vine-server on macOS, and RDP on Windows.
The most usable combo seems to be vine-server on macOS at 800x600 and Remote VNC on nook, as the mouse and keyboard are less delayed, but there's still ~1-2 sec of latency which seems to be normal. I can't really test out RDP fully because I don't have a keyboard and mouse on my Nook. but based on the performance of the on-screen mouse and keyboard, it doesn't seem to be any better.

Thanks. I can get it to work as a vnc viewer, but I was wondering if there's any other solution that could decrease the latency. All of the apps like Splashtop, USB Mobile Monitor, etc require updated versions of Android so I guess this is the best that can be done.
