Opinions airfire mobile $40 month unlimited - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I currently have tmobile. I like them, but $70 a month for unlimited is kinda steep.
I found air fire mobile that charges $40 a month for unlimited everything.
Does anyone have any opinions is this a good deal?
Has anyone every heard of them, and do they cap data?

looks like an at&t mvno, so there has to be some sort of throttle/cap. if not I'd be on this like white on rice

Yea agreed, all ATT mvno have a cap/throttle. Not imposed by the mvno but controlled by ATT. And they choose when and if they deem fit to enforce it on you.
. "Service is not intended to provide full-time data connections, and the service may be disconnected after sessions of excessive usage." "The typical speed range of broadband service experienced by most customers is 60-150 Kbps down and 25-75 Kbps up."

Edit: called to find out how to get their sim, was transfered to "einstien customer service" but no one's available to answer the call. Limited support hours?
Edit2: Followed their facebook page, it seems they offer a referral service. $10 per person, 4 referrals gets you free service.

Guess I won't be going there.

T-Mobile 3g

Im sure most peeps know this but tmobile does in if fact throttle your 3g service if you go over 10mb here is the text I got today.
(Free T-Mobile msg: Your usage has reached the data threshold for your rate plan this month. Your speed has been reduced for the rest of this billing cycle.)
Anyway just FYI in case people didnt know.i called and argued about paying 30 bucks a month to be throttled down.they said when u go over you switch from 3g to edge.thanks ping33tx

it's 10gb not 10mb. and that's a reasonable limit before throttling. there are other threads on this as well.
Does this count for downloading 10mb apps and stuff? I have not been throttled down and thought this was only a myth...10gb is a lot to go through a month for me anyway though

As I am new to android/smartphones, can anyone tell me if there is any easy way to check your current data usage to see where you stand?

Hell your DSL is not the same as wireless. 10GB on a cellular network is a lot.
Yep ur correct on that.despite that moral of the story is if ur paying for a product you should be able to get that product.Right?

this has been discussed thoroughly in other threads....
but, basically, you are still receiving the product (unlimited web access, which is the same cost even if there isn't 3g in your area), just at a slower speed. a lot of cable and dsl companies do the same thing and their networks aren't as impacted by heavy bandwidth usage.
The dumb part is 10gig's isn't much anymore, some apps/games download 80-100 megs worth of stuff.
Not only that but last I checked the Samsung Vibrant comes with mobile TV app does it not?
So whats the point of having apps that are going to eat up data, are only good when they have 3g and we only have 10gigs or use or that?
It makes me sick every time I see ATT's dumb as use our internet commercial and don't state it's a 250 meg and 2.5 gig plans.
Tmobile isn't very far from being in the same boat because they give you a phone with mobitv and advertise the screen and playing movies and then expect you to not use it (and the data cell line to it) to stream videos/movies/shows?
Same thing for Win7, etc..
ALL these phones now are capable of pulling 100's of gigs of data in a month, yet they want us to accept a neutered phone with only 10 gigs of worthy access at descent speeds.
And no edge isn't worthy, might as well not have a data connection for anything other than checking email or getting tweets because it's way to slow.
So either go back to selling just dumb phones, or they need to expect people to be using more data.
I just don't see the point in living in this internet data based world and having all these damn cell phone companies refuse to allow us to enjoy it by not offering a true unlimited internet 3g connection to our phones.
And it's not the data pipe, or the usage thats a bull**** argument because the following companies offer unlimited internet through cell towers for laptops/home computers verizon/virgin mobile/sprint and sprint offers unlimited 3g to their 4g phones.
So no it's not about them "coping" with us the evil eaters of all the bandwith. If that was the case nobody, not one company could offer true unlimited 3g/4g but it is out there just not for the vast majority of the companies/options and you have zero options if you are GSM only like me which sucks.
I think 10gb is very far considering at&t gives you 2gb for 25 and then charges you more if you go over that

Yes and I could offer to chop off only a pinky instead of your whole hand so thats better as well right?
Don't think so, if the cell companies want to make use of the airwaves that are limited, they should be forced to offer a unlimited internet package on all their services.
Same for home phone companies, if they want to offer phone service they need to offer dsl to all their customers, and have a unlimited package.
It's just tiring to see commercial after commercial showing this and that on the internet and you have to go to virgin mobile to be able to get unlimited 3g for a home connection. And they only charge me 10 bucks more than the cost for the internet on my phone.
So no I don't think it's to unreasonable to ask for unlimited 3g on my vibrant when you consider I pay about 80 bucks a month, and I use about less than 1 hour of talk time, only a few hundred text so the only real thing they are providing me in quantity for 80 bucks is internet and they can't even do that "right".
Honestly it hardly effects me because I don't have 3g where I live, but I do travel to 3g areas so I don't want to have that slow down.
I got a message telling me my connection was throttled as well. Problem is I haven't been using my phone. I checked my usage on the t-mobile website and it claimed my phone used a gigabyte while I was sleeping. At various points my phone seems to do a few hundred megabytes at random. This has been happening the last few days, which corresponds to the time that the gmail application stopped syncing on my phone. Is this a common problem?
Virgin Mobile/Sprint is giving unlimited 3G away for a few reasons
- Subscriber additions
- Underused EV-DO network (soon to be overloaded with unlimited usage+Evo/Epic; it's already happening) There isn't enough bandwidth to go around. Two people streaming YouTube constantly is enough to bring your overall data through put below 1Mbps where it was probably 2Mbps before.
- Subscriber additions, Sprint is hurting for them.
Very well spoken thats been my whole point to start with

If you use At&t, I need a minute from you

We have bunch of thread about Throttle Data. If you don't like getting throttle please sign this petition and spread the word in our xda community. We need to get more people sign this petition faster so we can resolve the issue. And tell At&t to F*** Off because i hate when I pay for unlimitated data and only get about 3.5 to 4 GB with full speed. SO PLEASE SIGN THIS PETITION HERE.
Honestly speaking, will this really do anything? At&t reserves the right to throttle or stop your data service as they see fit. Shady and screwed up, I know, but it is defined in the contract we signed when we all got service from them.
My data isn't throttled, but I don't actually use more than 3GB a month.
.
Thread moved. Would advise you to read forum rules and post in correct section.
Failure to comply with forum rules will result in an infraction and/or ban depending on severity of rule break.
Well we know how these companies tend to suck our hard earned money.
We have to sign a contract and still limit our usage.
I suggest move to another network which have a better data plan from AT&T.
This wouldn't do anything. It's obvious no one likes data throttling.

In Germany every provider only guarantees for 300MB - 1GB without being throttled to 64kbit/s while the plan states "unlimited"

T-Mobile does have 5GB and 10GB options that now include FREE TETHERING! Yes, you're still throttled after the 5 or 10GBs of data. But.....5GB for 30$ including tethering beats AT&T easily. 10GB for 60$ including tethering as well.... (referencing classic plan pricing here) is not bad either.
Only Verizon ATM beats it with Their double data promo (example: 10GB for 5GB price of 50$). That's a promo, not everyday pricing either.
Oh, yeah....NO TETHERING INCLUDED on Verizon either.....

I have no quality issues with T-Mobile. Fast HSPA+ speeds plus four bars (68-72dBm). I'll admit outside major metropolitan areas T-Mobile is lacking, but for the majority of us living in those major metropolitan areas....T-Mobile is the better deal.

I've never had issues with them either. They cover most of my routes in South Louisiana to my customers' homes. They've recently expanded their 3G coverage as well. I was pretty excited to see be able to stream last.fm again in some out of the way places.

Straight Talk BYOD!!!!!

Didn't know if this had been posted but ST just into'd new bring your own device plans! Now we can take our unlocked GSII's and use them on ATT network for $45 unlimited talk/text/web! Obviously this is not a big deal for those that live in Tmobiles 3g/4g footprint but it is for me since I don't.

Generally they begin capping around 2gigs. Not bad though for $45. Only reason this appeals to me is I can't get T-Mobile 3/4g service but I can get AT&T hspda service. As far as I know, this is the cheapest unlimited plan that runs on AT&T's network.

It does, unlimited minutes and messages, 4G with speeds throttled after the first 2G - but it's only available as a family plan: 2 phones, 2 plans, 2 x $50 / mo.
Great if you've got a family member who's interested, and you both live in the t-m ob footprint.
The same plan's available BYOD for $60/mo, which is a lot more when you consider that the family plan includes phones.

I used Simple Mobile's $40 per month plan and data speeds were horrible. It was so bad I switched to their $60 unlimited. Then this past weekend T-mo had that free phone giveaway thing for new customers, so I ended up signing up for the $60 plan for 2GB of data. Same price as Simple and I only really use about 2GB per month anyway, so it works well for me plus a free Galaxy S 2 is always cool with me.
The one thing about t-mo I really like is that if you call them there are a lot more options than what you see on the web. For example, I use Google Voice so I don't need SMS. That cuts $10 out of the bill right there, but you have to call to get them to take that out, can't do it via the web I don't think.
When is the Straight Talk SIM plan coming out?! Will they do 4G? God, I hope so, $45 bucks for all the **** they offer is a STEAL, especially if you use it with a smartphone... Unlike I am doing with GoPhone ATM

Knowing AT&T, if you use Straight Talk, the data speeds are probably capped at 512kbps.
Didn't work for me. I cannot even use SMS with their unlimited $45 plan. Data is down as well. I'm on Straighttalk AT&T SIM card. Customer support reset the options on their side twice, but it didn't help. I tried two different phones with this SIM card to no avail.
texts should be working but for data, did you put in the new APNs? Data wont just work if you just insert the SIM card in since AT&T and ST have different APN's

What is the best Prepaid AT&T/MVNO service for Nexus 4

Sounds like a stupid question, but I have been on Net10 and it is terrible... MMS receive doesn't work, data is spotty (excellent connection to HSPA+, just loses data flow) and their customer service is total crap, so I am looking for a different prepaid carrier but it must be on AT&T's network as T-Mobile has no service here (well, voice and 2G roaming, but they do not market here), so what are my options?
Currently I am looking at GoPhone and AIO Wireless, but what other options are there out there that will allow for a minimum of 1.5-2GB of data, 500 minutes/month, and and at least 1000 SMS/MMS messages per month that just works reliably for ALL services? BTW, this is Bismarck, North Dakota, so it pretty much has to be a nation-wide provider.

I live in Pierre, South Dakota and I just bought my AIO SIM card yesterday. I was using GoPhone for a few months and I don't have one complaint about their service. Speeds were more than what I needed (I pulled down around 6-8 mbps around town). I simply wanted to try AIO because of their 3rd free month promo, plus I like switching service a lot just to test out options. If AIO doesn't work for me, I'll go back to GoPhone. So my advice? Go buy an AIO SIM + plan now, activate before Sept 29 to qualify for the third free month, then switch to GoPhone if AIO isn't working out.
i have had straight talk(att sim) no issues whatsoever in my area. Wifey has straight talk (Tmobile sim) with same results. My second alternative(if ST starts giving me crap) would be the new at&t $60 prepaid(gophone) plan. Cant go wrong with that.

Hmm... interesting, worth checking out...
It seems that promo requires you to buy 2 consecutive months up front though, so $110 for first three months then $55/month after that. Not sure if I am comfortable with that...
Offer ends 9/29/13. New customers only. One month free per customer. Auto-pay enrollment required for in-store activations. Purchase of two consecutive months of service on a qualifying Rate Plan required. Third month free applies to Aio's Rate Plans (Basic, Smart and Pro) and does not include features or other services...

Hm, I interpreted that as you just buy the first two months when you need to, meaning $55 now, $55 next month, then the third is free. I could be wrong though, and if I am I guess I don't qualify. I assumed it was like that because I don't see any way to buy two months at once.

GoPhone or AIO are really all I am hearing about here... Tracfone (and it's variations) are not going to be an option anymore for me, their service, for whatever reason, just doesn't work properly for me for receiving MMS messages, everything else is OK except the spotty data link (not HSPA+ link, that is always rock solid).
GoPhone I am fairly confident will work, AIO Wireless seems to have a fairly good rep as well.
go with gophone. its 2 or 3gb cant remember and unlimited everything else for $60 you get WAY better customer service. As far as coverage ive heard its the same as Tracfone or any other MVNO. I use to have gophone begining of last year and it was pretty much same coverage as my current ST att sim. Not sure if anything changed from then and now.

It's 2GB on GoPhone, AIO wireless is also 2GB... AIO states you get 2GB at full speed and "reduced speeds" if you exceed it, extra data can be purchased at $10/GB and they will send a message if you hit 75% of your limit. I assume GoPhone does something similar? Also, although it's not for me, AIO has a 7GB/month plan for $70 per month.

That 70 gb sounds much better IMO. Depending on how much data you need. I personally dont use much, I have wifi available 90% of the time lol. Go to http://www.howardforums.com/forumdisplay.php/325-US-Prepaid-MVNO-Discussion, they have all the answers you might have.

I only use about 1-1.5 GB per month, I broke 2GB once and that was when I was travelling for work for two weeks in one month about 2 years ago, other than that $70 plan would be a waste... Thanks for the HowardForums link, I used to use that forum long ago but it kind of got filed away and lost in my memory in the last few years.

cool, yeah i dont even use 500mb a month lol, so yeah it would be a waste.
As I posted earlier, I used GoPhone for the past few months and it's great. I have the 2GB plan and it's more than enough. I bought an AIO SIM yesterday with the $70 plan just because it was $15 more. Being prepaid, if I can't find a way to reach anywhere near that, even being completely wasteful, I'll switch to the $55 plan.
Anyway, one thing to keep in mind OP: AIO throttles you before you reach your data limit. From their website regarding data speeds:
4G LTE service currently offers download speeds up to 8 Mbps and our 4G HSPA+ service currently offers download speeds up to a maximum of 4 Mbps. On our 3G HSPA/UMTS service, typical download speeds range from approximately 700 Kbps up to 1.7 Mbps.

Those speeds are good enough for me, the most data I use is streaming Pandora and that might change now that I have 7gb to waste, but it's just something you should keep in mind when deciding.

GoPhone texts you when you're at 70% of data and you can add more data at any time. With GoPhone you have an AT&T account and go through their customer service, its their own pay-as-you go plan whereas they are trying to market AIO as a separate service.

GoPhone sounds like the way to go, think I will stop in the store Monday... Can't do that on AIO, here at least.

Another thing with GoPhone is you can use the self serve kiosks in AT&T stores to refill your account (or do it by phone, text, on-line or ask a customer service rep in the store to do it). Here in MI you don't pay taxes at the kiosks and I'm not sure if that works in other states.
What's wrong with straight talk? $45 a month, unlimited talk and text with your choice of at&t or tmobile sim. Data is supposed to be unlimited as well, but some users report being throttled after 2 gigabytes, others seem unaffected (google it). But seeing as how u don't normally go over 2 gigs, this sounds like the perfect plan for you! Other than some users being throttled after 2 gigs I haven't heard anything bad about straight talk. For $45 a month u can't beat it
Edit: Just to clarify, I'm currently using straight talk on my one x with no issues! Like the O.P. I'm mainly on WiFi and never go over 2 gigs of mobile data. ST is perfect for me and I am considering ST for my nexus 4 as well.

Can't get MMS receive to work, tried every setting I could find, along with GoSMS and Handcent, worked with their tech support for half a day and the came back in the end with "sorry, but we don't guarantee MMS to work" after two tech support people and a supervisor failed to be able to fix my problem. Plus the data is unreliable, I am in an area with excellent coverage and the data stream just stops for minutes at a time well I have full signal, then just comes back.
I have just lost faith in Net10/Straight Talk to be honest.

Hm interesting, I did not know that thanks. It appears mms is a bit of a problem for many ppl when using tmobile prepaid, or straigh talk, with the nexus 4. But Many people were able to resolve their issues using the fixes suggested on this reddit thread http://www.reddit.com/r/nexus4/comments/1iwgx6/cant_receive_mms_messages_with_my_att_straight/ it appears to be random tho bcuz some still experienced issues after trying this.

Go Smart mobile on Nexus 4

I am done with Straight Talk. When it works, it works. But when it doesn't, it Sucks. And everyone knows how BAD their customer service is. I'm planning to switch to Go Smart mobile. Anyone use their service? And is it decent? I do ALOT of calls and messaging. But I barely use any data. Maybe 1gb a month from streaming music and navigation. I'm looking at their $35 plan. Any advice would be appreciated.

it's owned by T-Mobile so just check their coverage map.
For the $35 plan you will still connect to 3G, but throttled to 2G-like speed @ 128kbps. I don't think you can stream and browse with that kind of speed. (You can do it, but it won't be fun).
The $45 plan is throttled down to 1Mbps.
I think the $30 plan is best if you only use WiFi. Other plans get throttled too much for my taste.

This!!! x1000
It just works, flawlessly, all the time... It might cost a little more than ST/Net10, but it is worth it, and if you have any issues just walk into a local AT&T corporate store and they take care of it or their tech support/customer service is actually pretty good from the little I have had to deal with them.
The GoPhone plans don't seem so hot... $60 for 2GB of data on a smartphone is pricey for a prepaid plan. AIO Wireless is owned by AT&T and gives you 2GB for $55, but it's 2GB of high speed and unlimited throttled data.
If T-Mobile has decent coverage in your area then GoSmart would be worth a shot based on your usage. Music streaming would be fine on their faster plan, and even their slower plan should handle low-bitrate streaming.
Since it's prepaid and no contract, why not try it out and cancel after a month if you're unhappy?

AIO Wireless is throttled all the time, read carefully users who have switched, they limit to about 3MB/s, and their MMS is... ummm... questionable, at times.
Go Phone might be a little more spendy, but for the extra $5 or $10, it is worth it to me.

As of September they increased the cap from 4Mbps to 8 Mbps. It's certainly not LTE speeds but that's faster than I ever got on AT&T's HSPA+.

I used their service for a month, received excellent speeds - for whatever reason just as fast as I would on T Mobile LTE and never had reception problems. The issue for me was the data - I thought it would he throttled when you hit your cap but it just store working altogether. Of you know you can limit yourself it's worth ire bit otherwise I would suggest T Mobile prepaid.
There's always Solavei which I recently signed up for and find it to be the best deal! If you sign up before October 4th then your first month will be $29 (plus tax) and after that you'll pay $49 (plus tax) a month. You get 4gb of 4g data and then throttled to 2g speeds once over the 4gb. You also get unlimited text, mms and calling. SOLAVEI USES T-MOBILES TOWERS FOR DATA/TEXT/CALLS & ROAMS FREELY ON AT&T FOR TEXT/CALLS (NO AT&T DATA)!

Thanks for all the helpful advice. I just don't want to hop prepaid carriers because I have to buy a sim card every time. And I only need data for gps use. Sometimes I stream but I'm always around wifi. 35 bucks for unlimited calls and texts seems like a steal. I don't mind 2g speeds.

Good luck... Just remember if that fail or doesn't work out for whatever reason, GoPhone SIMs are free at any AT&T corporate store.
