Allshare Cast + Netgear PTV3000 - Galaxy Note 10.1 General

hey guys,
after messing around with the Netgear PTV 3000 and the Note 10.1 for a while attempting to get AllShare Cast to work, i finally found what was preventing to from working, and i thought i would share. Just encase anyone else was having the same problem, ( from what ive seen on the google project page a few people are having that same problem).
First the note mine is the wifi only ( 8013 )
attempted on stock 4.1.2 rooted(this makes a difference if you flashed to root and in turn hit the ticker) and on Redemption Rom
Netgear PTV 3000
tried on ALL beta firmwares and Stock
Now back to the rooted part,
I went back to stock to attempt to see if it would work, possible due to a custom rom breaking something with DRM or something of the liking.
After all my attempts with different versions of Stock and different firmwares on the PTV3K nothing seemed to work..until that is i had a idea, and sure enough, the custom flash ticker was the culprit.
Installed Triangleaway
which reset the custom bin to 0. ( still on redemption rom)
loaded 2.2.4 beta firmware on the netgear 3000 and low and behold it works!
pretty dang well might i add.

i know i said firmware 2.2.6 in the video, however i was in-fact using 2.2.4

Yeah, allshare cast always searches for a stock device. Ive never been able to get it to work outside of stock/triangle away.
Devs should really look at a way of implementing the counter reset into the roms when flashing so that it always displays counter=0. That would stop issues like this one popping up ALL the time.
Seen it asked so many times now. Luckily for some they happen on xda, but others just slag off allshare or Samsung and tell everyone it doesn't work.

Wait... does ptv3000 also work with stock 8013?
Or does it only work with a custom rom?

It should work, but I did not try it after I reset the counter back to 0. And most of the ROMs for this are based on stock just tweeked a bit so as long as the ticker is at 0 and its a stock based ROM you should be fine

I already bought a allshare cast dongle for $50.. so hope that someday allshare cast supports all miracast devices. .. and intel widi laptop displays.

That was the selling point that lead me to the ptv3k, so now all share cast and widi with one adapter.

Apparently, the recent Allshare Cast dongle firmware update enabled Miracast compatibility. I've never tried it out, personally.

Does miracast require the feature to be built in like Allshare cast? It would be good if it was an app like imediashare.

My impression is that 4.2 will have Miracast built into the system. In the meantime, it seems like Allshare will work with the Netgear Miracast device.

Yes and no, 4.2 source has the software for it, however devices A) must support it B) the device tree must have the proper configs to enable it.

So... Miracast and the Nexus 7?

Please tell me the N7 4.2 update will bring miracast. Because I cannot explain to you guys how exciting that would be XD
Also...anyone know where to buy one of those adapters?
I know you are excited... we all are.
Where to start? Ok first off don't buy any adapters for anything yet. Read this and get a little depressed, first (but less depressed than if you wasted money on an adapter that isn't compatible with your device).
http://www.slashgear.com/miracast-accessories-dont-jump-in-head-first-just-yet-06255843/
Now let's make you feel a little better. Hardware wise, yes Nexus 7(which has Tegra 3 chips) should be fine with Miracast.
http://blogs.nvidia.com/2012/07/tegra-enhances-miracast-wireless-display-on-hdtvs/
Although we don't really know if the bandwith of the wireless card will allow for streaming content from the interwebs to your TV, what the quality will be for a 2.4 Ghz wireless card or if Google will natively support it for the N7 (even though 4.2 is supposed to)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1896605
Time will tell. For now, just sit back and watch the posts to see the early adopters complain or rejoyce. As it is we really haven't even seen Miracast in action in the real world, just very controlled demos intended to get us all excited (please correct me if you have a real world video).
Also interested in knowing how well this will work. Please report successes/failures here. I am looking to switch from my T-Mobile Springboard to N73G but I'll miss the HDMI.
The update is here for many people so it is time to settle this once and for all.
I know some of you that have already updated have a netgear 3000 ready to go so...what is the verdict?Does it work or not?

As far as i can see, the N7 update did not include Miracast.
Well for better or for worse I ordered my N73G. I damn well hope there is some way to output video sooner or later.
The anandtech review of the N4 shows there is an option in the display settings for it. Unfortunately its not been added to the N7

I mean...hey guys
The google native support was always an iffy thing. It sucks but I'm sure we'll see some custom rom love in the upcoming weeks/months (hours? I love you guys... You are doing God's work). There doesn't seems to be a lot of options for Miracast from the pull side (unless you want to go buy a new TV just to support your $200-$300 tablet) So it's not like there is a huge rush to get the push side working right away. The bigger question is the persormance we'll see. But to be honest the fact that google nixed it from the start seems to suggest we may be disappointed with that too.
So I bought the Netgear ptv3000 updated my N7 hooked it up to my TV connected to it through WIFI-Direct and nothing. Screen on my TV says it's "ready to connect". It connects via wifi-direct according to my tablet but not the 3000 isn't showing it.
Nexus 7 will support Miracast needs to be on 4.2 and set op boxes may need to be updated, but overall, wait o buy, here what people say about them. I am waiting for the update to be pushed to me over the air because I am to lazy to dit manually right now, but it should be to all of us in at most 3-4 days. It may be a setting inside apps. Although, from the man websites I have been to, they have all been saying that it will get Miracast. I would post some but I have just lost track of all of the websites.

For the moment, it just doesn't seem to be an option as Google hasn't included it in the 4.2 build. I tried to connect up my 3000 with the Wi-Fi direct option, but it doesn't do anything- I suspect it won't work without the option in the display menu.
After the late availability emails today on 4/10 releases to the store, Google is not on my nice list at the moment.

Upgraded Nexus 7 to 4.2, bought a Netgear PTV3000 and tested.
First of all, couldn't find any Miracast related settings in N7/4.2.
Was able to see the adapter, changing its mode from Intel WiDi to Miracast mode and enabling Wi-Fi Direct option in Wi-Fi settings on N7/4.2. I can invite the adapter, but nothing happens on the other side.
Wi-Fi Direct option was already available in 4.1.2 and I understand its purpose is to transfer files only.
Any input or suggestion?

Why aren't custom rom developers enabling features like miracast, sip dialer?

I think it's great that there are many choices for custom roms, and when I had my nook color I immediately went to cm7 for the obvious benefits. But with my nexus 7, I'm not so sure of the clear benefits of a custom rom.
Again, it's great they do this work and I know there are some features like being able to use custom kernels, over-clocking etc, but I think there are some good features that would really attract other users.
For ex, with miracast, a lot of people were anxious to have that on the nexus 7 but were disappointed that it was only the n4. I thought, cyanogen or some group will enable it in their rom, but so far nothing.
I'm really surpised though that no one seems to know exactly why it wasn't enabled. Like what in the hardware is preventing it? Some have said because the wifi chip is only 2.4 ghz but that doesn't seem confirmed. And if that's the case, then why not on the n10? Then with the n10 some say it's because of the high resolution, but I think res scaling is in the miracast spec. I guess I'm suprised some dev hasn't looked at the code and said, ah this is the reason it wasn't enabled. Like is there proprietary code with the encoder or wifi chip? Or is all of miracast in aosp?
Another example is the n4 not getting multi-user. This is obviously not a hardware limitation but a decision on google's part as tyically a tablet is shared but a phone is not. I don't own an n4, but sometimes people want to borrow your phone and it would be nice to be able to just let them play with your phone without any worry of someone seeing private data.
What I'm getting at is, if it's obvious that the n4 could have multi-user (btw has any custom rom enabled that for the n4?) but it doesn't because google decided as such and it's also obvious the N7 could have the sip dialer, is it the same case with miracast or is it actually a hardware issue?
The other thing I mentioned was the dialer. It's disabled on n7 because it's not a phone, but for a long time now the built-in dialer has had support for sip, and you see mentioning of voip all the time with regards to the N7. cm7 had the dialer enabled on the nook (which wasn't useful because of no mic) so why not on the n7? From what I've read no custom rom enables the dialer. Again, I know the functionality is there, all you need to do is change the dpi to a phone value. So it would sound as simple as taking out that check.
Yes there are lot's of voip alternatives but I want the built-in dialer because I heard it works with bluetooth headsets.
I tend to ramble, but basically getting miracast and sip dialer would be two nice features out of a custom rom, and I could some users of N4 wanting multiuser. I think it's pretty obvious that any n7 could have the sip dialer enabled and any n4 (or other phone) could have multi-user so wondering if it's the same for miracast.
This is the power of open source. The company decided we can't have feature X on device Y so why not enable it if the code is there?

Nexus 7 lacks the correct WiFi hardware for miracast, that's why it didn't come with it enabled and why no one is working on it. There is, however apps in the store for streaming over WiFi.

I'm curious, where did you read that? I've read speculation that it's because it's 2.4 ghz only but no where did I read that was confirmed. And then why not the N10?

Hmm, I googled it extensively, and found many speculating that it's because of 2.4 ghz and other speculating that the N10 didn't have miracast because of it's high resolution. But that's all it was, speculation. Nothing from an official at google as to why, or a rom/android dev who has actually taken a look at the code.
So I'd like to see a link or otherwise to me it's another comment that falls under the speculation column.
And my post wasn't just about miracast, but rather seemingly easy features (well sip and mutli-user for phones) that rom devs could enable but for some reason don't.
Hi guys
You doesn't need any of the patches or 3rd party apps.
You just need to follow these steps in order to use cast screen in custom roms:
1. Just enable wifi 'on'
2.Open cast & it shows all available devices:fingers-crossed:

Help, can it be done? AllShare Cast nexus 10 to Samsung tv

Hi I recently got the 2013 Samsung 8 series TV and was wondering if there is a way to enable all share cast on the nexus 10 for screen mirroring? I have this feature on my siii given its also a Samsung device
Looking around the inter web information is a little vague and conflicting!

For screen mirroring you will need a miracast capable device. Initially the Nexus 10 was supposed to have miracast, but I doesn't (to my knowledge).
You can stream videos and pictures to your tv over WiFi using apps like imedia or bubbleUPnP. (or any dlna player)

I believe it has the capability of doing so hardware-wise, but the settings for it aren't enabled or visible. I think the memory bus or something would be a limitation due to having to push 2560x1600, but perhaps we can just change the resolution (there's some HDMI command thing found recently that does this) and use that?
Yea, wished we could enable it.
I have a netgear ptv3000 receiver. Works well with my dad's Note II.

thanks for the replies.
To give some more background, until very recently i was running XBMC on a win8 front room PC and Yatse on the nexus 10.
the joy was that if i was watching videos on the nexus i could hit Share/Send to Yatse and the XBMC would automatically start playing the stream for me on the TV.
thats the functionality i am looking for.
A lot that I have seen on the play store are simply players in their own right which if i look at my usage is not what i want.
ideally the right app would sit in the background as a service and catch any source (you tube, pictures, music, mxplayer or any where else I can press share/send to)
has anyone seen anything like this ?
at this point i am less interested in screen mirroring as such (until i want to play need for speed on the big tv!!)...
thanks
Dan.

Initially it was said that N10 would support Miracast
Then we were told neither N7 or N10 would support it.
Now Miracast has been enabled and working for N7, see
ht tp s://github .com/kensuke/ How-to-Miracast-on-AOSP/wiki and ht tp://w ww. you tube.com/watch?v=KNEmaIr3FEg
Even though Kensuke warned about trying it I went ahead and installed the non-tested OTA package for N10
I did not experience any loops as he was afraid of, no errors at all and it seems stable.
The OTA package seems stable but Miracast may or may not work.
I do have "Wireless display" in the menu now. I also believe searching for miracast receiver was working the first time I booted the tablet. Unfortunately I didnt have a miracast receiver nearby then and when I got home it seemed like I had lost the possibility to search for receivers.
I still have "Wireless Display" in the menu though.
Just spreading the word. Maybe and hopefully someone smarter then me would be able to make use of the patch :fingers-crossed:

No Miracast on Nexus 9!

I picked up the Nexus 9 this week. No Mircast support. Called Google on it to confirm. I can only assume that the lack of support on the Nexus 9 and 6 is an attempt to push us to Chromecast. I am PISSED! The proper hardware is there on the tablet (the dual 2.4 and 5ghz WiFi radios), just no software support. Maybe if enough people complain they will add support....
I understand your pain, I had the same disappointment. I also hope they will add support later, however with Chromecast being dirty cheap, I doubt it. Probably some royalties' issue... So is the world, but at least for me it's a bearable weakness, since Chromecast support is now very good, and since Chromecast now also does screen mirroring (in beta, but it works).
Ouch!

I wish my pain were my own. I deployed Miracast in 5 conference rooms at work once I found out that it would be included as part of Android after 4.2. I figured it had achieved enough mass to be sustaining as a standard (since Windows 8.1 supports it). Now I am looking for a replacement to my deployment of 100 tablets and the Nexus 9 just got crossed off my list of candidates.
I work for a University and the problem with moving to Chromecast lies in the details of how Chromecast works. A Chromecast device has to be added to an existing WiFi network with a static IP address, which on a corporate network that uses an Active Directory login that changes monthly, adds upkeep to a device that should be fairly simple to maintain.
I much prefer the method of connection used by Miracast. Miracast creates an ad-hoc network between the Receiver and the broadcasting device on the 5Ghz band, while the 2.4Ghz band is used for normal network use. In my mind it is a much more elegant and secure connection method.
What makes me mad is that there is no reason to cut support. The Nexus 9 has both a 2.4 and a 5ghz radio. It makes no sense.
aaaaaahhhhhhh did not know just tried no cast. WOW. Had Chromcast it is lame and does not do full HD etc. This is not good. Dang!!!!!
Interesting, they've killed wired mirroring too.
Right around the time they release the Nexus Player, hmmm...

In addition to really reducing (actually eliminating its role in teaching), I will not be able to cast (e.g., I have a push2tv 3000) to TVs in my relatives homes with this. I have other systems, but the size ad capabilities of this would have made it nice for this purpose.
So actually it is similar to the "Apple" move in that it is for personal entertainment and not a working beast.
Any workaround?
Got my tablet yesterday, and was looking forward to cast the screen to my Samsung smart tv (series 8), but no luck...
Try all cast in the play store
I've tried basically all apps in play store and no luck.
Its only media they can stream via DLNA most offen.
Its not what you see on the tablet, e.g. games and browsing..

Everyone, please take a moment and head over to the Google forum and voice your displeasure with how Miracast was intentionally removed from the Nexus 9 and 6.

Sorry to be slow, but I don't quite understand what you are saying. That it is possible to flash this being rooted? I have rooted by HPTouch pad and am familiar with that but flashing a stock rom (e.g., not rooted), I am not clear on. If this is possible. Any thoughts?

the phone can't cast to Samsung Smart TV as screen mirroring

hi dudes,
previously, i had nexus 5 and i was able to cast to my samsung smart tv, but after i've bought "nexus 6p" i surprised that i can not cast to my tv!

now i made sure by myself, i've rooted the phone, and then add this line persist.debug.wfd.enable=1 in the build.prop and the TV actually appeared as if the phone wants to connect to TV, but do not complete this connection, so this solution isn't useful
