Same question here
What is going to make if all here is for free?
This forum is not for making money, is for sahreing knowledge, help others and enjoy the FREE ROM´s and apps from the real Devs.
If I´m donating will be to this site!
Welcome to xda-developers.com
This site is about certain PDA-phones, made by a firm called HTC in Taiwan. Their makers named them 'Wallaby', 'Himalaya', 'Blue Angel', 'Wizard' and 'TyTN', but almost nobody knows them by those names. The mobile provider O2 sells them under the brand-name 'XDA', and that's what we had in our hands first. They're also known as Qtek, MDA, SX-56, Hermes and many, many other names.
Since we develop software for it, we need information, and nobody seemed eager or ready to give us what we needed. So we 'reverse-engineered' the devices, found a lot of information, and shared it with the world. But as our site grew we realised that lots of ordinary users were also suffering from a lack of support. They started using the xda-developers forum to communicate and before long the forum was as much a user forum as it was a developer forum.
We hope that you will enjoy this site and find it as useful as we do. We encourage you to donate or otherwise support this site. Of course absolutely all proceeds from donations will benefit this community.

Who says that you'll really give the money to WorldVision? And who says that you'll actually develop the application? ...
DHA Major,
This seems like a very good idea, ie people donate to a worthy cause and they get a development back via you. You have several problems to overcome though to make this happen:
1) Credibility - people need to be convinved of your technical abilities and your ability to deliver.
2) Honest - you already have someone questioning whether the money will go to the cause. Not sure how you address this.
3) Apathy - Sadly a lot of people enjoy having things for free while not making any form of financial contribution. If you look through some of the threads on here from a while back you will see that some even demand things get developed and delivered even though developers are given their time, effort and technical abilities for free (search through some of the Schaps threads on XDA to see what I mean).
It might be a good start for you to develop and release an application for us to see what you can do (sorry, I have not been on here for a while so if you have already developed and released an app on here without me seeing it then that's great). Once that is in place then you need to find some way of ensuring that people donate and that there is evidence that the donations are heading off to the charity as expected.
I applaud your idea; just not sure how you get around some of the problems highlighted above.
Good luck.

just being able to play with the latest and greatest is more than enough joy for me
Moved to General forum. The development forum is only for development threads. (Threads with actual development happening.)
Questions should always be in the General forums (or Q&A if your device has a Q&A forum.)
I would be very interested in testing for free devices
Add me to the list.
I'd love to do some beta testing!!!

Seriously? Please? I think this thread needs a pretty epic dose of it.
It would be great if there was an employee of Samsung / HTC / other phone manufacturers as a contact point between the dev community and the manufacturers themselves.
Eg: to look through forums such as this, see what everyone's saying, keep us posted on news and dates and seek honest feedback from us.
The only people who look through XDA are those interested in modding and installing custom firmwares anyway, so regular consumers would gain the benefit of us testing the stuff out without them having to be aware of it.
Plus, one of the deciding factors of many enthusiasts when buying a new Android phone is the dev community and support, so you can guarantee they would gain at least a few more sales from those interested.

That will make them way too vurnerable and the benefits will never justify the costs. The game they play is how to make as much as profit as one can. From that perspective things are good if and only if the sales figures are good. So, for them, sales figures are all the feedback they need
If they did do such a scheme, it would be in Korea.

Atrix Re-Birth Project

This page is dedicated to make a stable ICS-JB for the Motorola Atrix
Brief history about the project:
- Un unstable ICS for Motorola Atrix was leaked
- Developers worked on integrating kernel and drivers into existing build
- Kernel was found to be very unstable and new kernel is being ported to Atrix
- While we wait for the kernel, an ICS CM9 build is ready for anyone willing to join the challenge
Next step:
- Developers should get involved in fixing/enhancing the current build
- Code submission is done by forwarding the changes to the head development team for inclusion
Build source code is all available to anyone willing to participate. The build process follows CyanogenMOD builds.
Source Code location: https://github.com/MROM/android/tree/ics
Curent Team:
Project Managers: marcovrv and R3PL1C/\NT.
Head Developers: Epinter, MMontuori, and TPoint75.
Kernel developers: mvniekerk
Developers: Hayander, scanuto, ravilov, geleiahp, alberto88a, tachospeedo, Isaygarcia, digidrops, fanfantasy, hainguyen273, and caster62003.
Testers/Advanced Users: Carcara, EkzoMan, EMG92, Hayander, BusWah, Girafik, clockworkninja, rspaulo, Bravo9000, vigremrajesh, jlm-familiar, The-Milkybar-Kid, r3xx3r, ovitz, lightlord, ticiano_arraes, reix2x, Nargyle, diegofdg, shabeepk, pixut, Kaworu33, jhonnyx, Haxornator, fanhtc2, julian_fern, iximedaixi, heibailife, shadowed87, Matada02, Zeljko1234, tatperson, dibi91, NemeZZiZZ, Moonshield, bimasakti85, Cocolopes, Pont91, jeanpiere, pre4speed, jeffreygtab, nachobkcc, BravoMotorola and littleemp.
Without help, this project cannot continue.
Count me in for Rebirth

Dear fellow Atrix owners,
We all know by now that Motorola has cancelled the plans for upgrading to ICS, I was hoping myself to get the new drivers to update my own rom to ICS or JB. Well, this is not going to happen...
What do we do now?
We can either assume this is the death of this revolutionary device, or work on the Re-Birth. You probably know, but there are a group of developers working on upgrading the current Gingerbread version to ICS or JB. I am personally one of them...
We all need your help... we are donating our precious time and resources to make the Atrix 4G a better device that could last for another year or two, however, alone, we cannot continue with this...
WE NEED YOUR HELP...
If you are still reading this message, good, now it's time to decide if the Atrix is going to die in the couple of months or live for some time. We are looking for:
- People that can write code and troubleshoot (Android Java and C/C++)
- Testers
- Project managers (believe it ICS or JB is a full SDLC project)
- Android Advanced users not too scared of trying something new on their phones
- Donate Atrix Devices that you no longer need
- Of course, donations to at least justify the amount if time we spend on this
- If I forgot something, please reply to this thread with suggections
Again, you decide DEATH or RE-BIRTH
Take Care

It is certainly great to see commitment of this kind. I'm no DEV nor do i possess programming skills which could assist you. But please feel free to count me in as a tester and advanced user, more than willing to get his feet wet .
I will glady donate, as should others who wish to revive this device that surely isnt really outdated
I would love to be a tester and advanced user. I have 2 atrixes, so I can test to any extent on one of them. I would donate one but I need to have my main atrix as a backup to the s2 I am in the process of buying. So my backup backup is there for testing anything and everything needed.
I would have no problem in donating except I don't see anyone claiming that it is at all realistically possible to get the full ICS experience in our phones (meaning hardware acceleration and working camcorder). If that changes, I'd be happy to donate to keep my phone alive, but if it's just going to be another dissapointing waiting game with no outcome...
PS: Don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to rain on your parade or be an ungrateful bastard as I do really appreciate the work all of you devs put on this. I'd be happy to give money for a bounty.
i'd personally donate 50 dollars to the cause of keeping our phones alive. probably more as time went on as well, just to keep the project alive.
i would also be willing to test ANYTHING on my Atrix, as i have plans of replacing it soon anyways. the fingerprint scanner doesn't work anymore, and the touchscreen is dying.
I'm JUST NOW getting an Atrix and a Lapdock, a little late I know But count me as an advanced user willing to test anything. I hope to get webtop (In non-blur roms) working above all else, unfortunately since moto isn't willing to comply, that is also the most difficult task.
- Android Advanced users not too scared of trying something new on their phones

If there is something i can do that doesn't take me a very lot of time (because of the for-a-life work)
This is possible but requires more than a couple of devs working close together to make it come true. And ofcourse, it will spend us certain time for fix the problem of Nvidia named Tegra2 by re-developing a brandnew driver for our device.
Once this mission completed, we can completely go further ahead to open up other attractive projects on this worth device
Definitely advanced user and tester. Have strong experience on tech related project management, just not on software development projects. Novice on java, almost intermediate on C, advanced in Pascal (dead language I know), but I think I'm a quick learner.
Have a "real" job, so time is limited but can arrange something. Just tell me where I can help.

[Off Topic] [3/9/13] Device for Donation [UPDATE]

Hi guys, long time no see. Straight to the point. A few months back I promise upndwn4par I would sent him my Atrix 4G for him to use as his main development device. Like the busy dummy I am, the device end up in my trunk only to be found in the past few days while I cleaned my car for the first time in months (don't judge me, I'm busy). As soon as I found the device I contacted par to find out if he still want it, he then fill me in on his transition to sg3 and formulated 2 great ideas.
1. Sell the device to fund Atrix Reboot Project (This could bring in a good 6 or 7 months of hosting. That's about 80$-90$) or;
2. Donate the device to an Active Developer.
I'm happy with either option, so I am here to let you decide. upndwn4par put in a good word for mmtouri and the team working on the 3.1 kernel, but I would love to see some suggestions and/or other ideas if you got it.
I will do this in 2 waves.
The next 48 hours (I will start counting the 48 hours at noon[12:00AM/EST], march 7) the vote will be to either donate or sell. If you vote to donate, please post who you think it should be donated too, and make mentions of their contributions.
If the sell option is selected, there won't be a wave 2. Now if donation is selected.
I will simply open up a poll and add in the 5 most mention developers. This poll will be open for 48 hours too.
In the rare situation that everyone simply mentions the same developer, I will skip all the poopoo and donate the phone without a wave 2.
If no more than 2 developers are mention, I'll flip a coin on G+ Hangout.
Rules to participate:
1. Absolutely no flaming. This is not a competition, this is an exercise in community resource redistribution. We are trying to help, not to fight!
2. Keep the conversation on point.
3. Developers can request a donation and it also must include mentions of contributions.
4. This is not a sale. I am not selling this device to anyone. If the sale option is selected, I will personally take care of selling the device in my own time. If you so happen to be interested and the sale option is selected PM. Do not post asking or offering a price. Sales of devices in XDA is not permitted. ONCE AGAIN, I AM NOT SELLING THIS HERE OR TO YOU
@ LAST: Rock/Paper/Scissors over G+ Hangout <--- Another Fun Simple Option.
Donate to the Atrix 4G ICS/JB/KLP Kernel project.
What, not rock/paper/scissors/lizard/spock?
I vote to donate the device to either mmontuori or krystianp, ie. The Kernel Team. I'm thinking Krystian might need it more since he's the one playing with JTAGs and stuff more, but he's outside US so it might be easier shipping it to Michael instead. Or maybe to some other team member (yeah, the team has grown...). In any case, they will know, so contact them first.
Most generous dev ever!
Re: [Off Topic] [3/7/13] Device for Donation or Sale YOU Decide!!! R/P/S
I think you should give it to a dev
Thanks for being so generous

As soon as I get home, I will update the thread. Voting is still open for another 2 hours. Go, and thanks!

i recommend to give it to another elite recognize developer, that can help with the kernels and roms then we could have more people to work on kernels and roms stuff, imagine a gokan moral or stratosk or franco or mathkid95 or codeworx if one of those guys join the kernel team or teammate with epinter and mmontuori this could be sick and extend the development even more
I think we can all agree that overwhelmingly everyone who replied chose the kernel team. If no one disagrees, I'm going to skip wave 2 and say, I will donate the device to the kernel team. I will wait until Tomorrow night @ 12:00 am and if no one disagrees, it is done! By the way I updated OP with pictures of the full kit, custom painted atrix 4g, charger to go with it, 8gb sd card.
Man.. you're awesome I also think you should donate your device to the kernel devs! )
