I really hope Sony would help us with the drivers from CM for Exmor 2 Senor.

I would work on porting different ROMS over once CM is released.

Hi krappabel I have been outdated on Xperia devices starting from 2012 so just wanna ask how are the partition layouts on the current Xperia devices? Do they have recovery partitions now? Also is it possible to do unlocking through testpoint method or any 3rd party tools like setool or only through sony's official unlocking site? And how's the OTA updates when used with the official unlocking method? Does it still brick the devices?
Just wanna ask earlier as I am still having doubts buying the Xperia ZL, HTC M7 or HTC Butterfly J.

Unlocking can only be done using the official Sony method. But you can relock your boot loader after flashing a ROM
Recovery is still embedded in the kernels, but I don't know why this should be a big problem'. It's not that difficult to include it in a custom kernel.
If you unlock your device it's logical you don't need to take updates the official way in my opinion, upgrading with custom roms or flashtool also isn't difficult at all
Feel free to ask more questions

I'm quite new to rotting and flashing and such and I currently own a Samsung Galaxy S2 but... How difficult could it possibly be to root the upcoming Sony Xperia Z? I know it ain't released but perhaps it is quite easy to do : )

Xperia's are very easy to root once an ftf (firmware file) is out I can make a pre-rooted system.img to flash for unlocked bootloaders, so that should be from day one probably
For locked bootloaders I can't tell you right now.

Seems pretty different compared to how I rooted my Galaxy S2 xD Here's hoping that a very, very good rom & kernel combo will be available shortly after its release. 'Tis a shame we have to wait at least until March or something for this phone.

So whenever I relock my bootloader would I be able to upgrade via OTA still? Thing is I will be buying 2 Xperia ZL. I will be giving the other one to my wife and I'm afraid she might do an OTA when I unlock it.(Or I could just remove the OTA apk instead )
Regarding recovery yes I know it's not really a big problem I just got this habit of shifting CM and stock ROMs on the fly on my HTC device and obviously you can't hotswap CM and stock ROMs without a PC if you got an embedded recovery(kernel compatibility issues) so yeah thats my only point on the recovery.
Just an idea though I'm not quite sure yet if this is plausible but I might try this when I get the device. Would it be possible that when recovery is initiated on boot a script is executed to mount ram/tmpfs and copy recovery there and execute it on RAM? So we could flash a new boot.img without a PC?
Actually I already tried it on my HTC device and it worked although if you flashed a broken kernel then you wouldn't have any choice but to fastboot a working one. Just sharing my ideas for a way to hotswap kernels

you will have direct access to flash to boot partition when device is booted/in recovery.... so u can flash/backup/restore kernels in recovery in most 2012 devices (not sure about the msm7x27 devices)...

Really? I'm not sure yet with the 2012 devices since my last Xperia device was the Xperia Pro but wouldn't flashing the boot partition overwrite the older one instantly? Then what would happen to the recovery since it's running in the previous boot image's ramdisk? I can't imagine the recovery would still keep running without it's executeable.

Scared to download official ICS - Clear doubts

Are there any chances of me running into sumkind of bricking issue if i upgrade to ICS ? - I have always been on stock GB firmware and never messed around.
Also, is it so tht OTA updates are safe than kies coz kies will wipe complete data to install ICS and tht will inturn introduce wipe bug ?
PS: I will be downloading Indian official ICS.
In your situation it is highly unlikely you will brick your device since you are coming from stock and have never installed any other ROM
I respectfully disagree, I know there's a lot of talk about weather the ics stock roms are actually dangerous or not, but having seen brick after brick from several different scenarios, from people who've been on custom roms and upgrades, to brand new owners who've done one simple reset, and even a couple who just copied a movie across to their sd card. Unfortunately the casualties are not limited to being routed or with cwm.
There are works in progress jointly with a google coder on the matter of a possible fix, but at present still the only fix is a mobo replacement, or to bypass the problematic section of mmc.
I would highly recommend reading this thread

If it's official I Dunn see any risk installing it. If it really bricks your device I'm sure Samsung will take full responsibility of it since it's official anyway.

the only safe ICS at the moment is CM9 ,or ROMs based on CM9 Kernel
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1627854
if you don't use samsung apps then cm9 is a better all rounder than official ICS ,plus it's safe.
Wondering the same thing...
I have non-rooted German Note, just found out about the official ICS release today (for some reason I never get Sammy alerts) checked for updates and it's there but thought I should come here and check to see if everyone was happy with it...lo and behold not only is it buggy but it can brick your phone???
Damn, after all the hurrying up and waiting this is what they release?
I don't know if the OTA update for non-rooted German Notes has faired any better than other combinations but I've cancelled the update twice as I've read through various threads here, just too scared...
Mate, I'd wait for a further kernel.

If you never flashed any custom ROM, and you are using Kies or OTA upgrade, then the risk is that if something happens, you go to a Samsung Service Centre, and they repair it for you for free. It may take a couple of days for the Service Center to replace the motherboard - which is a hassle.
If that is your case, just flash it
I'd advice that you should NOT perform a factory reset after upgrading to ICS, (unless you don't mind bricking your phone and leave it in the Service Center for a couple of days).
Cheers

Like the others, I will wait until they develop a fool proof way to upgrade to ICS. It's really not worth it right now to even try it imo. Bricking my note would really suck.

If you would like a little more peace of mind, you could always install a kernel built from patched Samsung ICS source. So far Franco and SpeedMod seem to be relatively safe. However, there has been one rather unscrupulous report of a brick while on Franco kernel. Because of the nature of the claim though, I, as well as Entropy and others are questioning the validity of the claim. Nevertheless, even though the patched source kernels are supposed to be "safer", only time will tell. Your best bet would have been to avoid the update until after a confirmed safe method of upgrading.

well in my case i guess i'm just lucky. i already have flashed 3 ics, from stock gb lc1, namely: full repack (ics leak) by chainfire through mobile odin pro, lpy germany (dbtel) non wipe with cf-root lpy also through mobile odin pro, and lpf (taiwan) using pc odin (full iwpe) and i really like these ics releases than gb due to its smoothness and my battery lasts longer. the only thing that bothers me is that voodoo louder has only +3 db in its maximum whereas it is up to +10.5 db in gb and you could really tell the difference (i am using senheisser hd 449) and i cannot customize boot animation. i'm rooted but cannot modify the bootanimation using the same method as in gb, i.e., push the file in \system\media even if permissions are checked.
Updated my GT-7000 to ICS via OTA .
Running fine. Definitely better than GB.
Wants to do factory reset and data wipe but not enough courage to do that .
Hope this will fix soon.
Cheers
Well i did update and wiped to factory setting but no dead phone. .. Even on gb i had wiped it for many tines but my phone is still safe
Just a word of advice..
if you have Official ICS updates already on your phone, you can always go to a Samsung Center near your place and just have them be the one to flash and upgrade your device.
Why worry for something where you can just let the local subsidiary of sammy (on your area) do it for you?
For peace of mind and confidence, I should say.
This is my initial 9 hours with official ICS updated through OTA. After several time failed with Kies. Previously running GB 2.3.6 No root history.
So far so good.

Rumor: Note II to receive Android 4.4.2 KitKat by March end

Just has been posted by SamMobile.
Personally, I think it's a very optimistic rumor. We'll see.
SamMobile said:
The Galaxy Note 3 has started receiving the Android 4.4.2 KitKat update while we’ve seen a couple of leaked firmware for the Galaxy S4, and that has naturally made owners of the company’s 2012 flagships wonder when it will be their turn to hop on to the latest version of the OS. A rumor late last year suggested that the Galaxy S III and Note II would be updated to Android 4.4.2 before April this year, and now, according to insider info received by Android Geeks, both device should begin receiving the update by the end of March.
Now, many will probably just shake their heads at that, but unlike the Android 4.3 update, which took months to arrive on the S III and Note II, the KitKat update does have a high chance of making its way to users by March. Both variants of the Galaxy Note 3 were updated to KitKat in record time (if only because KitKat isn’t exactly a major update), and while the update’s only just out in a couple of countries at the moment, Samsung should be able to kick off the rollout for the S III and Note II rather quickly as well. At least, that’s what we hope, but we’ll just have to wait and see what happens.

S3 and Note 2 were not so lucky with updates.
Samsung is acting like HTC....
When HTC devices sold a lot, they didn't care too much of updates.... now that they lost everything, they care of and update HTC ONE.
S3 and Note 2 are really popular.... and received a crappy update after an year to 4.3.........
S4 and Note 3 are not selling as expected....and they care about updating them a lot.
I hope that KK won't be the last official update for my Note 2.
Just saw that, hope it's true and we can get an TW based custom ROM from that.
Actually Samsung is a group of stupids......Egypt...Saudi Arabia...Israel..didnt't receive the update till now....we are waiting the update since March 2013...Samsung is really funny
Sent from my GT-N7100 using Tapatalk
I guess/hope samsung wilk push updates before end of Feb for Note 2.
Because..
1. Kitkat is not so big different update than 4.3
2. It was said that Note 3 will recieve update at feb. But it recieved almost one month before.
3. Samsung wants to get rid of updates before march 23...or ..realese of Galaxy s5
4. If no; we have many devs who are so talented that they will port Note 3 update to Note 2
So Something Better and Surprising is Come soon!!!

Why there is so much fuss about kitkat... 50% of those who upgraded to 4.3 wanted to downgrade ...
With every upgrade Google/Samsung heading towards the close architecture
True that, I will not update even if it comes out tomorrow. Still waiting for a way to downgrade and go back to 4.2.1 bootloader.
Sent from my GT-N7100 using xda app-developers app
I don't understand what all the fuss is about.... The 4.3 upgrade is, IMHO the best upgrade I ever had, because for the 1st time after an upgrade my phone is smoother! Not only on SGNII, but on any smartphone I had!
Basicaly, you have 2 types of people. One, that don't want root, and they should update via OTA or KIES, and they shouldn't mind KNOX. Why would they - they're stock! And second that want root and/or custom ROMs - they have the option of flashing MJ5 kernel and any ROM they want.
So I really don't understand your complaints...
Potentially stupid question... but will they be able to push the 4.4 update without doing the 4.3 update first?
I'm in South Africa, and we still haven't heard a whisper about getting 4.3. I had a feeling that the network operators here would just be smart/lazy and wait for the 4.4 update and then push everything at the same time... but I don't know if that's possible?

Unfortunately there's not just two types.
I need to use a stock rom and kernel, and toggle root on and off on the fly because of an app called skygo which has been a great pain in the ass for many months.
So, even though I want to update, I'm stuck on 4.1.2 because I can't risk upgrading and realising it doesn't work properly to toggle root on 4.3.. with no way to downgrade.
Samsung, being the twats they are, decided to include a new bootloader meaning I need a custom kernel to upgrade while staying on the 4.1.2 bootloader. With a custom kernel, the skygo app I need won't work.
So even though I want to upgrade, I can't risk it with no chance of downgrading.
It sucks
You can keep the 4.1.2 bootloader and flash 4.3 rom with wifi fix, everything is working fine.

I realized how much it was still in developpement.

The ease of use, the facility of installing a custom rom, custom recovery, overclocking, etc...

I got the lazyness to repair it because I already failed before to replace a scratched one, I even replaced the micro usb port and ordered a new usb cable, now I have an xperia z ultra, it's awesome, but the developpers sucks to explain how to and nobody helps me, I want AOKP, never used it on my note, I was all the time on the CM 10.2 RC 1030

And... I tried to flash a recovery 108_DualRec_Jackie099.img via flashtool but my phone couldn't boot.
Then the device was still on flashmod or fast boot, can't remember and I flashed the latest rom on it.

Unfortunately I do not know anyone with modded Xperia Z Ultra
However based on searches it seems to me that what you must do is unlock the bootloader then use this kernel http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2426736 for the CWM needed for other custom ROMs
I saw some other threads too but this one seems to be most stable based on what I found

The main goal is to install a kernel with custom recovery of twrp or cwm. I was doing my best to search, but I couldn't really find anything newer. Right now I am from phone so I cannot really look into it further, I will later I think. I admit, having a download mode and stuff certainly makes the G note much more user friendly in this aspect.

As even the Z have the 4.4.4 Android,i think Sony is shaming their prev. But guys come on, all the prevoius models got it allready and we even dont hear rumors about it..

Which features of 4.4 are you desperate for? I'd rather that any updates where done well rather than rushed just so we can have it. As for the defects, gaps don't matter as long as device integrity is maintained I haven't seen anyone suggesting they are affecting this? Uncentered camera again as long as it doesn’t affect function I couldn't care less.
I'll go out on a limb here and say maybe Sony's just waiting for Android 5 to update?

They most probably plan to update the z2 to the same 4.4.4 software on the recently unveiled z3 army. That's why it's later than the 4.4.4 software released for older devices. They wanted to showcase it with the z3. Hopefully it'll hit the z2 soon.
That would be bad news for Z1 and z1 compact users because the software on the z3 has improvements for the camera.

There will be but don't expect to much.
Deodex your firmware and install superuser MOD.
That's two mins task and you won't even notice you deodex it...
What you'll see is great new MODs and APPs.
On older device there were "problems" when you were deodexing firmware.
Simply, without dex files for system to cache process, many devices become slower after deodexing.
All that doesn't apply on devices strong like Z1/Z2/Z3.
So there's no reason for you not to deodex your firmware.
Especially if you are already rooted...
Why to stop there?

You're right, there is no, but I was happy with stock rom, only rooted cause its 10 secs job and to install some stuff that needs root,
I'm not very good when it comes to android, especially when it comes to deodexing and odexing. I know what's what, but there's lots of questions, for example which recovery should I use, can I delete recovery later on if I plan on selling it in favor to z3, and I suppose once I get deodex rom, ota updates are out of the question, right?

Once you root device you can forget on OTA (at least on stock, existenz have its own OTA).
It's very simple to deodex ROM.
Just check which firmware are you using.
Download deodex patch for that firmware and flash it from recovery.
Your data will stay intact and nothing will change (of course, don't wipe data from recovery after or before flashing deodex patch, cache and dalvik wipe is what you need to do after flashing.
You can remove recovery, root and restore dex files, that's not problem.
Simply flash stock ftf using flashtool or if you have problems with your device flash stock firmware using PC Companion (repair function) and everything will be "stock"
After that, take your sdCard out of device and delete XZDR folder and files (there's remover, tool from NUT, to remove recovery but you can do that this way as well)
If your carrier will check your device for warranty purpose, they could reject your device because it's rooted as well so deodexing isn't something that could make more problems.
It's up to you but there's only one way to use, system (signed), Z3 apps and/or apps from other devices.

Thank you very much mate, I forgot that I can have recovery even if I have locked bootloader, its uncommon for me since I've never have had Sony device before, I guess it's easy later to restore everything later if I need to claim warranty, but just one thing,
few days ago I did software repair via PC companion, after that I had root BUT w/o permission to write, just to read system files, how's that possible?
Thanks again for the big answer,
regards mate!
I'd prefer getting Android 5, rather than getting 4.4.4 update for my Z2. So, if I'm waiting to get Android 5, it's all good.

[Guide]Xperia KitKat 4.4.4 Rooting - Locked Bootloader/NO OTA Method

I managed to successfully root my Xperia M2 with KitKat 4.4.4 without unlocking the bootloader. Since the procedure is quite generic (and straightforward) I thought it would be useful for people with other Xperia devices if I post it here. Please take it as a guideline, since it may vary slightly between different Xperia devices. I suspect it will work also for the phones that will upgrade to Lollipop (as long as they had a Jelly Bean ROM available), maybe changing the rooting binaries in the rootkitXperia tool.
One can find the full procedure with all steps detailed and links to the SW needed in my original thread for the Xperia M2:
[Q&A][Root]Rooting with Locked Bootloader - NO OTA Method
In order to be able to apply this method the Xperia device must have an older ROM available, vulnerable to the "Towelroot" exploit .
Without it as far as I am aware no rooting is possible in a Kitkat 4.4.4 device with the locked bootloader.
GENERAL GUIDELINES:
Be sure to have the full FTF for the stock ROM you are currently running
Flash with Flashtool only the kernel from a Jelly Bean FTF for your phone unchecking the wipe checkboxes
Reboot the phone:
The phone should bootloop, but it doesn't matter. The Linux kernel and adb are alive and thus the "Towelroot" vulnerability is exploitable by rootkitXperia
Run rootkitXperia. After the rooting it should get stuck when trying to reboot the phone(*). Interrupt it with CTRL-C
Flash back the kernel for the ROM in your phone
Reboot the phone
Manually run the command to have the RIC permanently disabled:
Code:
adb shell "su -c /data/local/tmp/install_tool.sh"
Reboot and enjoy your rooted phone!
(*) In some phones (Xperia Z?) rootkitXperia may not get stuck. If the phone reboots the rooting should be complete. Just flash back your original kernel and it should be done (untested).
Please note that this guideline covers some already known rooting methods. The difference is that it also covers the cases when the ROM bootloops and/or rootkitXperia gets stuck at the reboot, making it quite generic for all Xperia devices. It doesn't pretend to be a new guide for all Xperia, just a general one.
Xperia Phones confirmed working:
if you manage to root the phone using the kernel of a similar Xperia (like in the case of the Xperia M2 Aqua below) please report the phone name/model of your phone and of the phone you used the kernel from.
Xperia M2 D2303
Xperia M2 Aqua D2403 - With the M2 D2303 kernel

That's the well known method we are using since Xperia U.
As long as you have older fw (JB) you'll be able to root your device.
But...
I wouldn't bet on rooting L with this method.
Lollipop is new, fresh written firmware with a new kernel.
Code was updated on JB and new features were added when Google built KK...
L is something totally different...but we'll see soon..

I don't know if it was used already on Xperia U. I checked all around and I couldn't find this particular solution where the rooting is done with the hone bootlooping and one of rootkitXperia scripts must be run manually after restoring the KK kernel.
Particularly on Xperia M2 the suggested solution was to downgrade both kernel and system, root it and then upgrade via OTA. Which was something I didn't fancy at all. Still now I see people trying to apply rootkitXperia on any Xperia KK 4.4.4 (which will never work, as I discovered myself). So I made it available in the general section as well for people with less popular Xperias who are banging their heads like I did for a couple of weeks (honest):
But sure, the downgrade is a requirement. At the moment 4.4.4 seems unbreakable.
.

It's still Linux. With the bleeding SELinux fully enabled, though. It may take some tampering, but I suspect it will be a matter of replacing/adding the rooting binaries in rootkitXperia. Chainfire already has them available I understood. If it will be possible to inject them flashing the JB kernel half of the job has done. Still, I'll rephrase it in my first post, it could be be too optimistic.

Since it came with 4.4.4 and the HW is similar to the one of the M2 (same CPU at least) you may try this method flashing the M2 kernel attached in my first thread. In case it goes all wrong you should be able to flash back the original kernel. At least so I've read people "unbricked" their phones after fashing a wrong kernel.
But I am not sure about it. I take no responsibility. Do it at your own risk
I thought that ADB wouldn't work if the phone didn't boot completely or at least it didn't go past booting the kernel. That's quite a suprise for me and I'll surely test it on the next xperia I'd have to root. You just made my concerns about rooting 5.0 Sony firmwares on LB gone, thanks a ton mate!
BTW. That's literally the fastest written news I ever seen on the xda portal, like seriously, it was posted the very same day, just a few minutes ago.

Does this mean I can root my Xperia Z3 d6616 on 4.4.4? You may have just won all the internets.
Known method and it works. I used it on the Xperia NovaThor line
Also you can add this. If your phone is working weird (buggy or sudden battery drops) just wipe the cache. It is known problem when flashing older version of android (ROM/kernel) and then flashing back the new one. In this case you are doing exactly that. Right now there are no recoveries for locked bootloader but you can use the ADB command or some terminal application on your android.
Option 1. Using the ADB (easiest):
Code:
adb shell
su
cd /data/dalvik-cache
rm *
exit
adb reboot
Option 2. Using terminal
Code:
su
cd /data/dalvik-cache
rm *
exit
After that reboot your device. It will take longer than normal but it's ok

I think the dalvik caches get modified when a new /system (with a different version of the apps in /system/app) gets installed.. Just changing the kernel shouldn't really affect the dalvik caches.

or you can just type from the terminal:
Code:
adb shell su -c "rm -r /data/dalvik-cache; reboot"
Otherwise what I usually do is to remove the /data/dalvik-cache folder from a root file manager. /data/dalvik.-cache gets re-created at boot time. Not that I've ever really seen any benefit on doing that. Especially in Kitkat any time the system apps get modified Android should rebuild all of them at boot time. But yeah, one never knows. Hopefully ART in Lollipop will end this crap.

Yeah, I know. The guide is more specific for when the ROM bootloops and/or rootkitXperia gets stuck at the reboot, like it happens in the Xperia M2. In that case people where getting stuck, or at least I couldn't find any guide telling what to do. I'll specify it in the main post.

Would be greatly appreciated!
Dowloading the FTF from: http://xperiafirmware.com/8-firmware/50-sony-xperia-z2-tablet-wi-fi-sgp511, anyone know if SGP511 is compatible with SGP512 (I know they're both WiFi international versions)

First of all, use XperiFirm (google it) and download the program. Find your device and download the necessary firmwares. The second link you posted is just a kernel
What about phones without JB roms released, ex: Xperia C3? It was released on KK 4.4.1 and I think that no kernels are available for this phone. I'm asking 'cause I want to root my phone but is almost impossible using all known methods .

Ok, this is the situation: if the phone has a "brother" with the same identical SoC which came with a JB ROM flashing the kernel (and only the kernel) from the JB FTF of that ROM may do the job. It officially worked on the Xperia M2 Aqua D2403 using the D2303 kernel. As long as the phone manages to boot the kernel and abd is alive (with all relevant Unix commands) the rooting should be possible (and the phone won't be bricked at all. It just has the kernel not matching the modules, libraries and else in the ROM).
This may apply for example to the Sony Z3 using the Z2 JB kernel for the rooting (although the SoC in this case are slightly different). Or the Xperia E3 using the M2 kernel. But no one tested these scenarios yet, so I take no responsibility if anything goes wrong. It is at your own risk.
Still, my experience with the Samsung has been that after flashing the wrong kernel was always possible to recover the phone flashing back the official ROM (with Odin in that case). I have no experience of "soft bricked" phones with the Xperia, so I can't bring my personal experience on this.

Anyone willing to try this? Maybe we can set up a donation thread for someone to try it?

It's not about Jelly Bean firmware availability for the device. Towel root even works directly with KitKat, provided the kernel build date should be before 3rd June, 2014.
Mmm i tried many times with towelroot but isn't working. However as you said is better to have a non rooted device than a hard bricked one hahaha

Don't ever flash wrong kernels which isn't meant for your device. It might hard brick. 'No root' is better than 'hard brick'ed device.
