[Q] Nexus 7 OTG Problem with External HDD - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello guys
I have Nexus media importer (not rooted) and when i connect usb stick its working fine but when i connect my external hdd WD 320gb its not working. Anyone knows what could be the problem ? maybe lack of power ? waiting for answers :highfive:

You can connect only device with own power source...

It is possible to use a hub with otg, I have connected a kboard and mouse through a basic 4 port hub as a tester. You should be able to use a powered hub to drive your external HD

So which do you think is the problem?

Both the other posters indicated it is likely a power problem. But, not all external HD's will work, powered or not. My WD 750Gb My Passport HD won't mount even powered.

It is indeed a power problem. My usb 2.0 based wd1600 did the same. Since it does not have its own power source, i wired in 5 volts to its usb cable and that got me up and going. There are some usb 3.0 ext hdds that dont need external power to work though. Tassadar got one and said it runs fine with just the power provided by the n7. So you have 3 options. 1. Use an hdd with ext power. 2. Wire in 5 volts to the cable. 3. Purchase an hdd which the n7 can power.

How can I wire 5v power? You mean by hub with power input?

No. I actually spliced a 5 volt power adapter directly into the hdds usb cable (red and black wires). A little solder and a few heatshrinks are priceless.
I was going to upload a pic of the cord, but uploading anything with the xda app is beyond retarded anymore. Startimg to regret paying for the premium. For the greatest android site on the web, it is a shame that their app stinks and riddled with bugs. Kinda ironic.

Nexus 7 and PS3 Controller

I'm wondering if anyone would know if it would be possible to connect an adapter to a PS3 controller that would allow it to be plugged into the Nexus 7 using the normal USB cable for the controller and then would the controller be functional within games.
If it can be connected then would it also be possible to pair the controller so that it can be used over Bluetooth?
I know connecting a PS3 controller to a Transformer tablet with a keyboard dock allows pairing but I am curious if it would work with a Nexus 7 using an adapter.

I don't think normal regular ps3 controller do anything to ur N7 with USB cable,, just like it won't do any to the computer.

I'm pretty confident that it wouldn't. However, if you root and download an application from Google Play it will work. (Sixaxis controller)
It works just fine with a ps3 controller plugged via USB and an OTG cable. You can even navigate the home screen with it.
I can post a video if people want to see it.

Could you provide me to a link with a suitable OTG cable for this?
Also will my Nexus 7 have to be rooted?

is that out of the box?
I remember it is plug and play with windows and I did that and though it was so cool when I discovered that 2 years ago
I'm using the Xoom camera connection kit cable. Which is just a fancy name for an otg cable.
It works just fine on stock. No apps, no mods, just works natively. Buttons can also be used to navigate.
Here's an Amazon link to the cable. http://www.amazon.com/Motorola-Connection-MOTOROLA-Packaging-89454N/dp/B004UAG6WC

So it has to be an OTG cable then?
I have purchased an USB A male/female adapter and tried connecting the controller cable and the Nexus 7 cable together through the adapter and nothing happened.
Do you have any idea to why that may not have worked?
Just get sixaxis controller from the play store.

Yes I believe it does have to be an OTG cable.
Also, it doesn't work for all games. I think the game has to have an external controller option. For example the controller doesn't work for Final Fantasy III but works for GTA III and the emulators.

Nexus sometimes freezes when connected to external HD and OTG cable

As the title says sometimes when I try and move files from the Nexus to my external HD using OTG cable and stickmount pro the Nexus will just freeze up and i have to disconnect the OTG cable and restart the Nexus, the files I'm trying to move are all less than 500MB so i cant understand why this is happening, anyone any assistance?
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda app-developers app
Are you using an external hd with its own power source? There may not be enough current to maintain the hd during large transfers.
Use an OTG cable with stickmount pro, all my files show up shortly after connecting and i have transfered music on the Nexus but probably one around 150MB max, the problem seems to be when I go and move files around 500MB it looks as if it is transferring but the screen goes dark and won't turn back on, and I have to take the OTG cable out and reboot the Nexus

I have come to the conclusion that I need a better OTG cable, maybe the one I have isn't powerful enough, I cannot think of anything else, unless anyone else has any tips?

USB DAC support?

The auxiliary ports on all phones are crap, does the Nexus 4 support exerting music through USB? If not, is there a kernel that has the capability of enabled that function? Thanks.

Probably yes, but you would need a Y cable splitter for the USB power. In the end you'd get a really bulky setup. Not worth it IMHO.

I don't need the power I just want to send info to my car audio.

That is called USB audio out. The Nexus 7 supports OTG of of the box, but even then it cannot support USB audio out.

So the chances of it working on a Nexus 4 is slim.

Regular OTG cable (not the Y type)

Did anyone manage to use a usb thumb drive with the regular OTG? I have one laying around in my room and AFAIK I need a custom rom to make the OTG feature to work. Since I am waiting for the official CM 10.2, I still run stock, I just wanna know if I have to buy the Y type...
Sent from my Nexus 4 using Tapatalk 2
The Nexus 4 cannot output 5v through the micro USB port.
The Y cable is your only way.
Look for the one with a male and female micro USB also with a female USB.

You should be able to use the cable you have but you would need to run it through a powered USB hub

Can someone tell me if this could work with OTG on nexus 4?? http://viewitem.eim.ebay.gr/I9500-I...B-Host-OTG-HUB--CARD-READER/161105862553/item

Look at post #795. If your linked device is like marhensa's, it should work. However, it's hard to determine exactly.
Of course you need to flash ziddey's kernel for any OTG to work.

Can Note 2 mount portable HDD via micro-usb OTG cable?

Hi, guys. I have got my note 2 rooted. I would like to know if note 2 is able to read data from portable HDD(NTFS) via micro usb cable. I want to watch movies which store in my portable HDD. Thanks
Sent from my GT-N7100 using XDA Free mobile app
I was able to read files from an external hdd with his own power supply, so I believe u will not face any problem. As for ntfs you have to use a third party app to mount it, though I don't know if there is any custom kernel that supports ntfs mount, the stock one does not support it.

Devil or AGNI kernel and download Paragon NTFS or USB OTG Helper from PlayStore.

I use my wd portable 500gb hdd with my note 2 on stock rom

I was not that lucky, had a Hitachi portable HDD tested, the HDD emitted an abnormal mechanical noise due to insufficient power supply. However, USB flash disk worked in that way perfectly.
Yes, the power provided by the phone is not enough. I used a little trick, I don't know if you can do it too: My 2.5" portable HDD had a Y USB cable. One plug is for power and data, the other one just for more power, if needed. I connected the power+data cable to my USB OTG cable, the other end to a 5V USB power supply. I don't know if it's good for the phone, but it worked like a charm and the phone didn't get warm or so.
But as far as I know, not every external HD has a Y shaped cable.
