Cannot copy item error message - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

All of a sudden, I can't copy files to Nexus 7. Windows 7 64 says device has either stopped responding or is disconnected....which tells me nothing. I see others have posted this topic for this tablet but there are no replies. Tablet is rooted, running LiquidSmooth Beta 2 and seems fine. Same USB cable and I can see internal folder and files from Windows, but cannot perform normal file transfers. Where do I start looking for issue?

MTP or whatever its called sucks. But that usually either means that your device doesn't support that file format, the files are too big, or you actually disconnected your device. Try a different USB port, and give us a bit more info on what you are trying to copy.

Trying to copy a 7MB zip file. I looked at settings -- MTP is checked and there's 12.79GB available out of 13.24GB. Weirdly, I thought I'd try a file that was completely different, so I just copied a text file (2K) and it went fine. Now what's that about?
I usually use WinRAR to create zip files, but some on xda recommend 7-zip (changing file extension to zip) for stuff like boot animation files. Is that the problem??

I had the same thing happen... I tried an 11mb zip file, no luck. Text file or image worked fine... I'm guessing I'll just have to use something like AirDroid to transfer any file. This is disappointing that Google has done this. My older Android phones, I could copy any file I please.

Well, one thing I finally discovered is that zip renamed from 7z may be an issue...the system probably checks the file header (I assume) against extension to see if there's a match. Possibly to catch exe files with zip extensions that may be viruses.

solution
Just put the files you want to copy inside a folder, then copy the folder. works for me on Nexus 4

Just had the same problem. This worked! So the problem looks to be that the device can't handle certain files by themselves.

NASCAR Sprint Cup Mobile for Mogul Working

Hello All,
I found this on another board for my friend who is a BIG NASCAR fan and got it to work on her Mogul by following the included instructions. I have tested and it is working. The final test will be during this weekends race. Keep in mind that it's a Java App and you will need Java installed. The stylis isn't used, you have to use the arrow keys to control.
Enjoy, I will try to support it any way I can, but no promises.
http://rapidshare.com/files/116171004/NASCAR_Sprint_Cup_Mobile.zip
i dont have a windows folder on my mogul?
never mind, I found it...it was hidden
confirmed, this is working on my mogul also!!!! awesome I have been waiting for this!
Can someone make a cab file for this application
I installed this on mt VZW xv6800 and it works great. I probably cant get the subscription stuff being on VZW but i will test the rest of it on race day.

I don't think this is possible because of the procedure to get it working. A cab file cannot determine what the file name of the file created is, (At least as far as I know).
i must have done something wrong. I followed the instructions correctly I thought.
Using the second set of files that Brett posted I was able to get it to work and I'm not even a sprint customer. Here is what I did:
1. Copied the following files from Brett's zip file into the \Windows\Appdb\ directory. s40__d0.db,s40__d1.db,s40__d2.db,s40_suite.jar,s40 _suite.utf.

I had no appdb directory, so I created one, then copied all 5 files into it. I didnt however copy the bin directory over, since it didnt mention that....
I also tried copying with the folder and running things from inside the folder....
Excluding the above files make a note of the highest set of numbered files that starts with an s.
Click to collapse
I had no files in there.....
2. Using my phones file explorer I browsed to \windows\appdb and opened s40_suite.jar.
3. I went through the normal install steps and received the same error that everyone did.
4. Closed java.
Click to collapse
that worked fine, java ran, but it never got to an error. Just a white screen with exit and pause on the soft keys.
5. On your phone browse to the \windows\appdb\ folder.
6. There should be 2 new .jar and .utf files that that start with 's' and are one number higher then the number you made a note of earlier.
Click to collapse
there were a bunch of s0 fies
7. On you PC rename all 5 files by replacing the 40 in each file's name with the number of the new file that was created.
Click to collapse
went back to the original files from the zip file and renamed them all to s0
8. Copy all 5 files to \windows\appdb
Click to collapse
copied everything back over and overwrote whatever files it asked to
9. Open java and launch app.
Click to collapse
Went back to Resco and ran the s0 jar file that I had just copied back over.
No good. I get a 955 error

[Audio] [4/6/10] Audio Repository

This is a collection of audio files from several ROMs from several phones, including:
CDMA Hero - 1.5
CDMA Hero - AOSP 2.1
CDMA Hero - Sense 2.1
Motorola Stock
Samsung Stock
There are almost 200 different sounds in this collection! Tons of variety!
Also note that this frees up some space in your /system partition! Always a good thing!
Copy the .zip posted and flash it just like any other update.zip. This will delete your current system/media/audio folders (with the exception of ui) and place the repository on your sdcard. BE SURE YOU HAVE ENOUGH SPACE ON YOUR SDCARD BEFORE FLASHING THIS!
Updates:
Included additional sounds from here
Created an update.zip to automagically delete current system files
Download
Gregalous said:

Code:

There is no need to put the files in /system/
You can make a /media folder on the SD card and it works the same... *AND* the files won't get hosed with every ROM reflash.

I tried that first but then all the files show up in your Music player. I also tried putting a .nomedia file in the folder but then they didn't show up at all.
This is the only way I've found that works completely.
Dont put it in your system folder. Create a /media/audio/notifications or /media/audio/ringtones folder on your sdcard. My ringtones and notifications are seen in these folders.
Gregalous said:
I have created a collection of notifications, ringtones, alarms, and general UI sounds from every ROM that I have ever used (1.5, 1.6 and 2.1 w/ & w/o Sense) all into one folder. This gives you a huge amount of choices for ringtones, notification sounds, etc.
The .zip posted contains a folder called media. To use the sounds, unzip the attached file to your tools folder and from ADB:
Code:
adb remount
adb push media /system/media/
Give it just a second (as there are quite a few of them) and when it's done copying it will tell you. Reboot once finished.
I did not do an update.zip because quite honestly it's much faster and easier to do it through ADB.
Enjoy

Again, the reason I put those instructions up is because when I had tried putting it on my sdcard, the files would show up in the music player.
Besides, you can use the files however you want, I'm not forcing anyone to put them into /system, that was just my recommendation.

Woops! Fixed now, thatnks for pointing that out!
system has some limited space thats why i would recommend not putting it there.

You went to phone ringtone/notification ringtone and there wasn't anything there? If done correctly there should be a very long list to choose from.
Did you reboot after pushing?
Ok so after further testing, it turns out that the only files that show up in the music player are the UI sounds. So I just deleted those (since they're all the same in all the ROMs I'm pretty sure, plus no one really cares about those) and now it works just perfectly when you put in your sdcard.
I humbly admit that I was wrong This should work better now, especially for those that were worried about using up /system space.
First post edited with new directions and .zip.
awesome! Thanks so much for making this! After RMing the media files from the system I gained like 20mb's that can be utilized in running apps and such. You're the man!
I tried installing this by putting them on the sdcard, and all of the sounds show up on the list, but everyone option I chose plays the same song on my sdcard :|
Ideas?
did you RM the system files? Mine works fine.

Ya I did, and then I my phone would freeze when anything tried to notify me, and it woudn't mount my sd card :| Good thing i have a sdcard slot in my computer, i had to remove the files and rewrite them to my sdcard. Then it started working. No idea why, but its working
I merged your folder with the original media folder and rebooted but they do not show up...??
in case anyone is having trouble with this, there is a very clear post on how to do this here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=5936137&postcount=3236
Updated, nearly 200 sounds in this package now
Now in update.zip format, super easy!
Cool thanks... Will give it a try...
Thanks for posting this.

can't unzip file

hey guys, I'm about too pull my hair out because for the love of god I cannot unzip the android 7-zip file!!! It keeps telling me it can't allocate enough memory. If anyone could be so kind as to help me out it would be GREATLY appreciated. This is on my hd2 with 7zip installed.
dude, any particular reason why you want to unzip the archive from within the device? as far as i know, large archives will give you trouble when unzipping on the device due to limited RAM memory and/or limited temporary space on the device memory.
if i was you, i would simply use my pc to perform the unzip and then copy the unzipped contents onto the device...simple eh?
your never gonna get that extracted on youre phone, and you cant really do much with it anyway just leave it to the dev's
@ASCIIker... yup, my computer died. Thanks for the answers guys.

if the device is all you have to take a crack at unzipping that file, one suggestion i can think of is to go file-by-file and/or folder-by-folder, i.e. pick a few files/folders, extract them, and move on to do the same with the next set of files/folders. this will only work if the archive contains multiple neatly sized files/folders...this method won't work if the archive just contains one big file!
only other thing i can think of is to try another software to try to unzip the archive. i understand you're trying a mobile version of 7zip...how about pocketrar? also, i think resco explorer has built in zip file support as well...
let us know if any of the above works for you. if all else fails, i hope your pc is fixed soon, good luck!
just an update. I was able to extract the second android download(without sense), but not the first- with pocketrar. Appreciate that ACSIIker. I guess I took for granted this phone has more memory and faster processor than my first few computers!! Just assumed it could handle the workload- O well

Unable to copy Nandroid backups from phone to PC

What I usually do is make a backup of my phone and then I copy it over to my windows 7 PC for safe keeping. This has been working perfectly fine the last month and then suddenly a few days ago it has been unable to copy the entire backup. I've tried different cables, different computers, different files, so I think the problem is with my phone and the file formats that are used in backups. When I try copying the file the "boot.emmc.win" and "recovery.log" copy just fine but the problem is with the other files. The "data.ext4.win000" and "data.ext4.win001" and "system.ext4.win" files are all unable to copy. I right-click and copy them, then when I try and paste them on my desktop nothing happens. There's no loading symbol or anything. If anybody has any ideas what might be wrong, I have no idea and this problem just recently started happening. Thanks.

out of curiousity, have you tried copying the whole folder over instead of the individual files?
Your using twrp if its .win files right? Maybe try another version of twrp or a different recovery. Otherwise I believe there is an option to turn your backups into .tar or maybe even yaffs2

Flash the zip in this post http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=43556554 it will fix the permissions so that you can transfer the backup
From my BLACKED OUT N4
Have you tried copy-pasting other files such as MP3 files, from your phone to the PC? It might be a little hard but you can try using adb pull command.
Edit: or you can use Airdroid if you're connected to the same WiFi as your PC.

Yes other files copy just fine. Nothing unusual just the normal loading-like screen shows up, fills the bar with green and then goes away and the file appears on my desktop.

yes I have and what happens is the little loading screen pops up that shows you how far along the copying process is just stops after copying the first file in the folder. It gets a little green and then just disappears without no error messages or anything.

what u used to make a backup? if u got just from copying and pasting from mtp, no way to get those things back then.(at least, if your phone had 4.4,but probably would be the same for 4.3 or 4,.2)
Be a whole lot quicker to ask your phone Co to send you the information. They will for a small fee
