Qi charger for $35 - too good to be true? - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Includes FREE worldwide shipping. Is this too good to be true? I'm keen to give it a shot, but can't seem to find a brand-name or anything. According to the seller its compatible with our phones, but I'm always sceptical of no-name-brand Chinese things, especially if it could damage my precious.

Don't think its branded at all. Their return policy seems pretty good. Seems as though you would only have to pay for shipping if it's not an error on their part. I assume DOA's and the thing breaking down within the warranty period would constitute as free return paid by them. Post a review if u decide to try it.

I received mine today but for some reason I only seem to get 94% charged and won't go above it... I'm still trying to find if anyone else is having this same issue but nothing at present...

Some of us on xda ordered some it's some post down from this one they said they got and it works I'll get mines tomorrow. I ordered it on the 7 of January

Unlike the other one, this one (for $35) seems to be one of the WPC certified chargers, although I am not sure if it means much.

Is the blue light overly bright and annoying? Are there beeping sounds? Is it easy to get it to charge, or does it only charge when placed in a certain way?
Sorry for the barrage of questions, I'm thinking of getting one of this if it works.

Placed my order. Figured its worth the risk at that price.
Unfortunately I'm in South Africa so I don't expect it to arrive in less that 2 weeks.

The green light has been annoying me more to say it has power, the blue one is covered by the phone when it's charging.

There is a beep to alert you when the phone is placed on it and to advise of charging.
Is it easy to get it to charge, or does it only charge when placed in a certain way?

The phone needs to be placed upside down, in the case of the N4 the bottom of the phone is towards the power plug end of the Qi.

I've been looking around for something else. Seems to be once above 94% it won't charge anymore. Charging via USB works fine to 100%.

What about the charging range? Is it any good?
Because on other Qi chargers, a lot of people complained that they lose connection when knocked a centimetre off centre.

I ordered one, for 27€ it's worth a try. Will probably open it up and dim the leds a bit.

There we go I like this price I think i can chance I can gamble for that type of money.

You can move it around a bit but not too much, it'll work sideways, longways, etc. and I've also got a case on without an issue.

Maybe once you remove your case, it will charge over 94%.
I am just kidding.

Has anyone looked at the one labeled just "Qi Wireless Charger"?
It's white, and I don't like that, but it's completely flat, so it'd probably fit the phone better...?
Better as in, if you have to turn it around, then it'd be better, since with the large one, the casing seems to be raised at the top, whereas the standard one is completely flat, so flipping it around wouldn't really be that big of a deal.

To repeat the OP, this is the charger discussed here:

1.) It feels pretty cheaply made, but its a simple device and I can't really fault anything about it as far as build quality goes.
2.) The Nexus 4 has to be placed upside down for charging to take place. Bit of a shame, but no reason why you can't just use the pad itself upside down instead.
3.) Unlike the comments from another poster here, I was relieved to see my phone charge to 100% without any problems.
4.) The flashing blue LED is annoying and doesn't seem to do anything other than flash continually whether it is charging or not. I'll probably open it up and kill it, and/or simply tape over it with black tape.
All in all, pretty happy for the price paid, and glad to be able to reduce the wear and tear on the microUSB port.

Sorry, when I say "upside down", I don't mean face-down. Rather, the charging port needs to be at the top. Obviously that's where the sensor / coil lines up best with the phone; can't think of any other reason.

Just Ordered My Brand New Transformer!

But I'm extremely nervous from all the problems. First off is receiving one with a stuck pixel. Is there a fix for this? Because this just straight up scares me. Next is, i ordered it through Amazon LLC, Do they ship it as fragile as they should like with alot of protection? And finally has Asus come up with a fix with the speaker imbalances? That also scares me, even though there is a fix here on XDA.

You'll be OK. Chances you having defects are slim. Creaky case on the left side is pretty common but big deal. I love the transformer.
Words of advice, download SwiftKey X keyboard from the market. It separates the keyboard so you can hold it with 2 hands and still type.

I agree with the above posters, you'll probably be fine and if it does have a few problems you probably wont notice them over time, unless your anal about stuff being perfect.
My suggestions are when you first get it is to root it, overclock it and installed a modded 3.1 rom. It makes it so much faster. Dont worry about bricking the device because we have nvflash to unbrick it.

I agree probably be fine just remember don't charge over night. Mine's on RMA right now because charger died. Plus the light bleed and creaky case. it is an awesome little device I miss it dearly.

If he has a problem when he charges over night, he needs to exchange it, not just "not charge it overnight."

Broken the USB port -_-

Last week when charging my phone, it slipped off my desk and something happened inside the phones USB port. The little metal contact was moved out of place. I could still charge, but it had to be at a certain angle and if I picked it up it stopped charging.
And this morning, I broke it even more. I dropped it into a bowl of milky cereal. I didn't think it would be too bad. I wiped it down and I've been using it fine all day at college. But I've just got home and went to test if it still charged. On my own little USB cord I had from elsewhere it didn't work, but on the official LG one it worked after a LOT of shuffling around and changing the angle.
I'm gonna leave it as it is to make sure it doesn't stop charging, because I don't have a wireless charger handy.. I would also prefer to get the official orb from Google, because I don't want to spend a lot of money of something that doesn't work very well.
I was wondering if there is a way to fix this myself, or can I get a replacement from Google/LG?

I'm actually quite careful with my phone! It's just very smooth and slippery..
I would call them and tell them it no longer charges.
See what they say. Worst thing they do is say not covered.
I would omit the milk and dropping parts.

[Q] Wireless charging orb damaged my N4...

Alright, let me keep this simple. I was charging my Nexus 4 on my wireless charging orb yesterday. I did not notice that it was slipping off the orb since I was eating, and by the time I finally noticed, it fell to the ground. When I picked it back up, I noticed that the back of the phone was cracked. The crack on the backside was pretty bad that it actually affects the camera; when I try to take a picture, I noticed that there is a really bright area on the bottom of the picture (most likely from the cracks). I bought the N4 from day 1 and got it a week after, so I don't think calling Google Play support would help me there. If I call LG and explain to them that the cracks were caused by the phone slipping off the orb, would they allow me to send it in for repair under the limited warranty provided along with the phone?
UPDATE: I just called LG and just asked for how much it would be to repair it. Did not explain or anything. They told me that it could be $140-200; could be more, could be less. Is there any other cheaper alternatives to getting the back cover fixed? I really don't want to pay that much, but if there is nothing I can do, then I might as well.

Seriously Doubt LG will repair it without cost... Mainly because you shouldn't have set the phone so close to the edge of the table/desk when it was being held up by rubber and magnets. Its not impossible for it to slip off.. Specially IF you have a case on the phone, which reduces the strength of the magnets grip.
No cheaper way to get it fix other than through LG.. At least none that I have found.
There aren't 't any magnets in the orb that hold the Nexus 4. I've heard the back late is easy to change. Maybe you can find one cheap on ebay or somewhere else and change it yourself.

Could you please edit the title of your post? This is very misleading. The orb did not damage your phone. It's sudden stop on the floor is what damaged your phone.

@OP I'm gonna suggest you do a search for replacement back. Don't take me wrong, not trying to be a prick. I'm driving and wanted to let you known there might be an alternative. There are 1-2 threads, one guy asks people to pm him to buy the back. Also I think its simple to replace it by just removing the two screws. One thread a guy mentions he sent his back to LG and it cost him $64 total and two weeks. There are backs online about $35-50.

That's it I'm really disappointed with this device.
First the touch problem.
Then there's also some weird problems with charging (touch response is close to zero when charging with some chargers, doesn't charge when using power hungry apps) and the sound delay.
And now there's some yellow spots showing on the screen. Mine goes back to Sony for warranty, but for those considering getting this device, I'd advise against it.

I know im going to sound like a sony rep but. Sry to here this, I have the Z2 tablet since july, and yes touch was an issue when I first got it, but these issues have disappeared since software updates. As for the yellow tint I cant say I suffered from it. Never used mine while charging as generally I find the battery life great. Sony are certainly not perfect - show me a manufacturer that never has any issues...

Well , I pre-ordered mine and I got it since march. Touch has sure improved since then but it is still light-years behind my old Acer Iconia A500.
Just try it with a multi-touch test app. Even with the 4.4.4 firmware it still cannot register more than 3-4 finger consistently when you move them around.
My aging Iconia does not drop a single touch.

Well I do. Especially when I play XCOM as it is a power hog. And sometimes the screen is completely unresponsive until I unplug it.

Did I say anywhere to stay away from Sony devices? What I said is stay away from the Tablet Z2. After almost 7 month of ownership I can definitely say if I could send it back I would.

I am pretty sure the touch screen issue while charging is from a low quality charger. If you are getting a lot of AC ripple, it will completely flip out.
A good way to test this is to use an external battery pack. If the issue goes away, then buy a real high quality charger.

Your post makes it sounds like I'm kinda dumb.
I tried with three different external battery packs and about a dozen chargers.
I experienced problems even with the stock charger. It is not even the best of my chargers for this device.

Op has a right to complain, as long as it stays within the boundaries of XDA rules. So I remind everybody to keep the peace. If the thread gets out of hand, it will be closed.
OP, it's very unfortunate you've had so many issues with your device. I hope you can get them sorted out with Sony. I would suggest constantly communicating with them, and perhaps they will take it back into service. At least that's what they should do, for devices with multiple issues. Take it up with higher management if need be.

I had the yellow tint, Sony had my screen replaced only took 5 days.
I think the problems are not usually for this tablet. I have mine long-time and no problem with touch, yellow tint or charging in normal . But charging only if I use docking station with those two contacts to charge the tablet. If on micro usb port with power adapter charging gets slower and the device sometimes is less responding to touch.
But I agree that if having those named problems, the tablet would get useless in a way and I would try to get it "corrected" by Sony or seller of the device.

I bought it in March, the day it came out in HK.
After about a month, i realised that there were green dots, tiny ones on the edges of the screen.
Anyway, i made a post about it a few months ago, but long story short,
My screen got replaced in less than half a day. Dropped it off before lunch at sony centre with a repair center, and got it back in the same afternoon.
I am assuming that yours is still under warranty. Maybe you could do the same?
I bought mine un June, and i don't have any of the issues people describe (usually with early units), my screen registers 10 fingers moving on screen consistently, one of the first thing i did after purchase was install the MultiTouch Tester app to check, also i have no yellow tint or anything like that.
I have been a Sony customer for a long time ago, and i know wht happens with Sony devices, first units always have flaws, i had one early Xperia Z, and i, and a lot of other early customers, got battery charging problems, dead pixels, dodgy loudspeaker, and stuff... The first PS3 fat models, i really doubt there is one left alive in the world. This time i waited some months before purchase the Tablet Z2, and it seems i did the right thing.

Yeah. It is. I sent it Thursday afternoon and it already came back this morning.
That was incredibly quick. I haven't had the time to play with it much yet to check if all issues are resolved but that sure is great customer service.
By the way my tablet was unlocked and rooted (I re-locked and unrooted before sending it back) but still under warranty .

I won't add any fuel to the fire , seems like some would rather I shut up, but I 'm terribly disappointed with this device. Great customer service though...

Hey, nobody wishes you to delete the thread.
If there are issues, then they need to be known. I'm really sorry you have some problems. For the most part, it seems some folks don't have the same. But, that doesn't mean you "don't" have a lemon tab. And lemon products "do" happen.
If the tab is not charging correctly, then there's an issue.
Does it charge somewhat correctly from a USB Computer charge?
Sony, is probably one of the most consumer friendly organizations.
I can say, having owned an Iconia A701, is that when dealing with high performance tabs, the touch responsiveness, well, it leaves much to be desired. And at times, you had to tap more than once to get the response. NOT GOOD when playing a game.
In the first weeks, I also had the touch problems.
It was really a shame and totally unacceptable that Sony denied the existence of the touch problem and needed so long to release a fix.
The customer service of Sony is abysmal.
BUT: Since the firmware which fixed the touch problem I'm VERY satisfied with the tablet! It's simply a joy to use and to look at, and of all my devices, it runs by far the most stable and consistent and has by far the best and most consistent battery run time.
So I recommend it!

PIVOTAL CROSSROADS... Any help is better then no help.

I am a Nexus advocate and the same will most likely be true no matter which name or branding Google chooses to use... that is as long as they don't steer away from the customizability and the virtually impossibility of a software brick.
Anywho I am a owner of a 6p. I bought it in Feb. around Valentine's day. The reason this is revenant is because @ that time is when the gold nexus came out and was on sale. The only problem being was I didn't want the gold.. I wanted the aluminum one. I was able to remedy that easily enough. I ordered a new Rear housing via ali express which came with the glass and bottom plastic piece that covered the screws. I have repaired my Nexus 5 lcd probably 5 times. So I have some experience with mobile repair. When the back finally came in (like a month). I watched a quick tutorial of a tear down. When I was applying heat I used a little too much and ruined my camera. I was able to access the camera but it was very blurry to the point of not being able to make out what ever it was. So I ordered another camera via ali express again, waited a month, then attempted another repair. This time I had no issues with the heat gun or removing the rear housing. To replace the camera was not as easy as it would have been for the Nexus 5... there are several steps involved... one of which being too take out the battery... I cannot figure out for the life of me why Huawei would feel it necessary to apply a **** ton of adhesive on a battery that has little to no wiggle room but they did. While I was attempting the removal I ripped the poly bag and could instantly smell the lithium. Soooo I ended up ordering a new battery from China again. While I was waiting for it to come in the phone fell off of my bench and cracked the screen. I had no idea if the screen would work or not until the battery arrived so I could test. Well the battery came in finally I installed it with no issues. The phone is once again in one piece but unfortunately the screen does not work, but, I am not sure that it is only the screen not working. Is there anyway that I would be able to troubleshoot or verify that it is only the screen that isn't working? This is why I named the post pivotal moment... if it is only the screen and I can somehow verify it then ill purchase a screen... but if I order the screen, replace it, only to find out that it is not the screen where the problems reside and/or it is only one of many problems then I'll probably give up and lick my wounds.. So, in a nutshell, is there anyway to run a diagnostic or anything like it... At this point ANY help or suggestions are welcome.

Well to me it sounds like you should be able to turn the phone on at least? Once it's on, give it maybe 5 solid minutes to boot just in case and try to operate it. If you see no response then try to call the phone. That would engage the screen, sound, and motor for the vibrate, if set... Go from there?

Try holding down volume down + power for a couple seconds and plug it into a PC and see if it tries to load fastboot drivers.
one of my problems is that i cannot tell if the battery is charging or not... is there anyway to bypass charging port and put a direct charge to the battery so that I at least know that the battery will charge and/or hold the charge... That will also let me know if my charging port is working or not.

How long have you had the phone plugged in to a charger?
After installation probably 4-6 hours.. That's the beauty about Liith-poly... The rules of NiCd and NiMh are obsolete and do not apply... unless you are using one of course. Anyways a couple hours here an there..

Well you could still try, you'd feel it vibrate when it turned on.

My apologies about the tardiness of my response.. I put it on the charger yesterday for a good 8 hours..
no matter how long i push the power button I receive no response from the phone..
I've tried this while having the phone connected via USB to the pc..
I've used a multimeter and it reads 3.7v which is right on par but I have no way to test under a load to confirm that it remains at that level.
I'm curious to know if there is a way to test without battery...

No worries, we all have lives.
And well, the only thing you could really do would be to remove the battery and then jump the terminals from an external supply.
It'd be the same as using a laptop with the battery removed and having it plugged into the wall still.
