how to stop android os from draining battery - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

OK. I'm frustrating as hell over android os draining my battery. I've tried different type kernel from stock, bricked, faux, Trinity, motley, Franco and every time and android is would take a good chunk if battery life even when I'm doing nothing. Anyone know what's really causing this to happen or how to fix it?

Sorry just realized I posted in the wrong section. This should probably belong in the q& a .

I have this problem on some days. Quite annoying.

Just started happening to me aswell. I'm completely on stock. Hope someone is able to solve this before I have to do a factory reset..

Turn of Location Updating in Google Maps, Settings?
Worked for me. I had enabled location updating on another device in the past, and the setting had sync'd.

For me a full factory reset using the official factory image from Google + installing franco kernel v28 fixed the issue. Maps usage is still high, but Android OS went from 30% to 8-10%. BAttery life is way better. Which version of franco have you tried ?
Here you can find the latest kernel : [KERNEL][GPL][N4] franco.Kernel - r29

Did that a couple of days ago, didn't help so far. It decreased Maps battery usage, but not the Android Os process.
Skickat från min Nexus 4 via Tapatalk 2

I flashed cm10.1 and faux latest beta kernel and android os is no longer taking up all my battery
I'm getting about 4 hours screen on time now.

google wallet battery drain issue

did a search so if already asked sorry but i didn't find the post..
anyways.. anyone else getting a really fast battery drain after using google wallet?
i i'm on stock but rooted.. loaded the file available for the ns4g and when i open google wallet, everything works and what not.. leave the program either pressing the back button or home.. and after a few hours.. battery drains pretty quick.. look at the battery monitor stat thing.. google wallets always on the top even though i used it once for 1 min... same results even if i turn off the nfc chip in the settings.. basically have the restart and not open up the program and battery is fine..

i'll flash to this rom and see how it goes.. should i still clear cache and stuff?? plan on just flashing but still trying to keep programs and contacts etc installed..
Stock 2.3.6 and no battery drain issues. I'm curious if it's stuck polling some resource. If you capture a logcat do you wee any wallet activity? Are you seeing the device wakelocked or waking often?

I had the same issue as well, I'm running stock and unrooted.
I've been wondering peter alfonso's would be a better rom to run btw?

Yea, I had my suspicions it had something to do with CM7. I saw quite a few posts on the interwebz about people having battery troubles with GW and was curious as to why I wasn't having any trouble. Everything was gravy on stock 2.3.5 with the 2.3.7 update, and on my current ROM, Pete's GPA18 Beta.
I was running stock 2.3.7 for a few days and was also running into battery drain issues with Google wallet, where according to the battery use utility it was using upwards of 36% of the battery at the end of the day after simply opening the wallet app, not even after actually using it. There is probably a few bugs in the software as it was just newly released so look for Google making some updates in what I assume will be the near future.
Happened to me too today. I noticed subsequently trying to open it that it didn't want to "unlock" either until a reboot.

Yep, after switching back to GPA18 it works fine.
i ended up flashing to peter's rom.... stock rooted odexed rom.. and now i can open google wallet without battery draining.. i opened it thru one or two times a day the first few days while keeping the nfc chip on.. and without actually purchasing anything.. and no serious battery drain... so for me solution found.. clear cache and such.. then flash to peter's rom.. problem solved
I have the same problem. Here's what I posted in the Google wallet possible fix thread.
Anyone having any battery issues with this? I flashed this last night and I'm down to 45% battery in 7 hours with Google wallet using 52% of my battery and a keep awake time of 4 hours and 34 minutes....
I'm running a fresh install of the latest NSCollab which is based on nightly 212 I believe.

Same here... after update my battery life is gone. Very unhappy as I can't find how to shut it down. My phone had 74% when I went to bed. It drained & shut off before I woke up. 6hrs of sleep for me and the phone died.
Why?
if you dont have this issue, why the F*** do you comment on it saying:
"nope, no issues here."
your not helping at all.. its so pointless. this guy needs help.
Im running 2.3 oxygen, and it just happened to me today, been running the same setup for 2 days now and today it happened. I just tried to force close wallet and cleared the apps data and cache. will post results

even when wallet is in the apps draining the phone, it seems my battery drains faster now.

What are sns_async_ev_wakelock, sns_periodic_wakelock, and main?

These 3 wakelocks are always about even with each other at anywhere from 50% to 90% of the time "since last unplugged". Anyone know what these are, if they're normal, or how to get rid of them?
turn off latitude helps a lot
but they are Android 4.2 bug, i think Google will fix them
Probably normal if you were on the phone or doing lots of texting.

Hmm they're actually increasing almost the whole time the phone is idle with screen off though. Latitude is off as well. I'll try a clean ROM flash after factory reset and report back. Thanks guys.

Unfortunately these are still present (and high) after a full wipe and flash of the latest AOKP. Anyone else see these at the top of your wakelock list?
Not on MINCO
I am having this issue too, I believe it might be an AOKP problem:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=37451238#post37451238
Well, I searched for hours, and hours for this wakelock too, and I think I finally found what it is, basically this wakelock is caused by the signal processor going berserk and waking up your phone constantly, most of the time this is caused by something disturbing it, and in that you have to think about something that could change or capture a signal in really the root and not through the official Android ways, like Viper4Android, it changes the audio kernel, this could disturb it, or automatic call recorder, this one picks out the voice signal, and this applies to almost all the sensors and signal processors

[Q] Why is Android System consuming so much batter nowadays?

It didn't used to be like this. But now I get a pretty bad drain from Android System. It would be the second highest battery consumer, and would be using the CPU for quite a lot.
I'll post my battery screens and BBS stats soon. But for now, anyone else getting this issue? I'm on CM10.1 M1, tried different nightlies but still getting this f*cking problem. It's driving me crazy.

try a different rom besides for cm, or try a different kernel. no such issue here with the rasbean jelly rom/trinity kernel. android system stays between 2-6% here.

I have the exact same list of packages for Android System. Right now my phone's been on for an hour and it's at 21%, with a CPU total of 15 mins and it kept my phone awake for 4 minutes.
I dunno why it's like this all of a sudden. A week ago it was completely fine.
The thing is, I did clean re-flashes already and it still does that. I even wiped system. How do I properly reset my phone to get a clean slate? Should I RMA my phone if this issue doesn't go away?
Edit:
Just flashed MiNCO v6, and the drain seems to subside a little bit, but I need more time with my phone to judge better. Sigh, I'm missing CM's quick reply feature already!

It's not a hardware issue. The longer the phone is on, the lower % the Android System will be at (obviously lol) because the other stuff is averaging it out. You can also ry changing your kernel.
About the messaging quick reply, just replace MiNCO's mms.apk with CM's.

BATTERY DRAIN Android Core Apps HELP

My phone gets down to 70% after less than 2 hours. It used to take probably like 3 or 4 hours to get to 70%. But I've also looked at the battery status and it says "Android Core Apps" has used 33% after an hour and 47 minutes on the battery. Look at the screenshot I attached. Please help?!

Idk if I wiped cache and dalvic but no I didn't restore anything from tb I restored apps from kies because I got the mf9 update from kies.
I wpuld suggest Backup your apps/data using mybackup. Redownload ROM, go into recovery, wipe /data /cache /dalvic, reflash, and restore apps (apks w/o data I get FCS fro, apk+data) and data. Should fix your battery problem.

I say go odin back to stock mf9 and check whether your phone still gets hot or anything and to let your battery sink in for awhile then root and install your rom. Before doing this back up apps and internal memory since it will wipe it clean.

Having the same problem here.
Any help appreciated.
Same, MF9 update from MDL stock, unrooted
I'm having the same issue (coming from MDL stock, unrooted).
Is it the ROM? Is it Google Play? I'm not sure anymore, but i'm severely annoyed.
I had this problem until
I was experiencing the same issue on my phone. note I'm stock and not rooted. Until I updated the samsung apps.
For some reason the samsung app store had an update and was constantly waking my phone for the update, but because I had never agreed to the TOS(becuase I never opened the app) it wouldn't update resulting in battery drain.
I stumbled on the answer in a forum in regards to the G Note II. I was skeptical as to why it wouldn;t show the samsung app as being the culprit(something about using the google services core functions to update), but I know that it worked.
I'm sure an experienced dev can better explain why it shows as android os and not the Samsung app causing the drain.
If you already removed/froze those apps though I suppose you have a different issue.

You could try a different kernel too. I use AGAT's Kernel. That kernel gives me SO much more battery juice.

[Q] Random Reboots. Whats causing them?

I've been getting random reboots for a long time now. But it seems to have been getting more frequent recently. Did some research and many said to post up my last_kmsg. Here it is. Hope someone can identify the problem for me. I thought it was the kernel (previously using franco), Hence I dirty flash PA again. It happened on previous versions of PA too and I factory reset from time to time. So I'm not sure whats causing the issue. I cant seem to emulate the reboot. It happens even when my phone is in sleep mode. Let me know if there's any other info that you need. Thanks
Radio: .84
PA Version: 3.99

what apps do you have installed?? is chrome or chrome beta one of them?...i had installed chrome beta and had random reboots as well...if not then try to install a different rom..see if that helps
sometimes it happens i would recommend you a factory reset and try with other ROM.
for example Carbon Rom + Hells Core no deadlocks and very fluid and stable!
they release a nightly per day!

I too have been getting random reboots on PA since moving up to 4.3. I can live with them as they only seem to occur when I'm not using the phone. My guess was it's an issue with 4.3 or PA ... which will be fixed I time, or it's because I restored all apps with titanium, which I don't usually do, and something got ****ed along the way?

I just uninstalled chrome beta as you suggested and install chrome in. I'm also suspecting a certain app that is causing the reboot but can't seem to pinpoint which. Hope someone that can interpret the last_kmsg could point out the cause. Will monitor a few days to see how it goes.

Is this ROM battery friendly? Battery is a main factor for me since I don't use much of the customisations like halo or pie. My battery brains reeeealy fast when I turn on 3.5g. Such vast difference compared to when I just use 2g.

yes my friend! i am looking for the battery friendly and this one is so stable! and hells kernel is being a good kernel even in Beta.
use 2G we cant do anything respect this.
You will need to catch a log when the reboot happens, since the last_kmsg is only written when the reboot happens, and is not written in case of soft reboots... So i thinkj last_kmsg won't help...
Mine was rebooting fairly often. By chance i went into settings > date and time and somehow the setting for “automatic date and time" got unchecked. Since I checked it I haven't gotten any reboots yet. Just posting this to see if anyone who has been having random reboots has that setting unchecked.

Hm... Interesting. Mine have been checked all these while. Don't think this is what's causing my reboots. I'll keep an eye on it nonetheless.

battery life usually depend on kernel..not so much on the rom..give hells kernel a try and see how much juice you can squeeze from your battery...im running jss kernel on rev 3 and works perfectly fine so no need to worry abt that...matrix, semaphore and franco kernel are good alternatives as well if hells kernel doesnt work for you...Are you still getting those random reboots?
The speed of vanir is craaaazy. But I'm not getting more than 2.5hrs screen on when on 2g. And there's some weird issues with the camera. Like screen tearing. Im guessing that would be from the hells kernel being incompatible to an extent.
How do you get 4-5hrs screen time??
