Sony is back - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gWysHOjl95E
What do you guys think? I think its a winner. All Sony's 2012 phones were terrible.

I think it has nothing to do with the Nexus 4...
Edited for helpfulness: Either post things like this here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2021559 or in the android general section.

It doesn't look bad at all. And dust, water resistance is always a plus. But I prefer the N4 with pure android and updates from Google.

It's OK to post this here. We don't have an off-topic forum, or even an off-topic thread, right? Oh wait...

Agreed. This has nothing to do with the Nexus 4. If you're already willing to jump ship, well... Boo.

Yeah, but alot of the CM devs seem to like Xperia phones since Sony actually works closely with them so they have functional source drops, blobs and documentation... Which means that Sony is good enough for people who are interested in their designs.

Non Nexus phone? no thanks.
Here are the key specs for the Xperia Z:
1.5 GHz Snapdragon S4 Pro quad-core processor
1080p HD 5-inch display

NFC
Water and dust resistant
Dimensions: 139 x 71 x 7.9mm
Battery 2,330 mAh
Up to 16GB Memory; expandable (up to 32GB) via microSD card slot

... same thing I mentioned in the other thread. phones being announced at CES are still being released with older android versions. waiting for the update to come out? no thanks. I will stick to my Nexus devices, I can't trust any manufacturer to release updates for their phones in a timely mannered. nice specs though.

Glass back? Guess it will get scratches 'out of nowhere'.
In that respect I guess it does belong in this forum

They weren't.
But with them releasing a phone like this, it kinda makes me hope the next Nexus is made by them. The Nexus Z? I could go Sony for that. Hell, I went LG for this one, and I swore I would never do that again.

Deja vu Xperia S release?
Actually they are better this time. I'm surprised they have 4.1, instead of 4.0. ROFL

Screw all these phones getting bigger and bigger its so depressing even with this nexus its semi hard to type with one hand when ur reaching over for the A or Q ..no complaining but cmon where are they gonna draw a line of being too big for mobile use

Yeah they aren't even comparable, it's twice the price of N4.

I love Sony and I hope they can see success in the future. I'm a Sony loyalist to the bitter end. I would love to see them make a Nexus device in the future. I would consider buying one of their products if they made devices that mattered. Sony used to "wow" the world with their innovation and design. I find it sad to see them make marginalized products. Even Steve Jobs tried copying their design and that says something. With that said, this phone looks like a step in the right direction. The physical design is stunning and I’m sure the screen tech will blow people away, however I really think they needed to bring their A-game, but this looks like another phone that will get lost in the shuffle. In terms of specs, it would have been awesome if they stuffed a newly announced Tegra 4 and some new battery tech (keep in mind Sony is a major manufacture of high-tech batteries). Sony really needs a game changing device to blow away companies like Samsung & Apple and I don’t see this being that type of a device.

Why is this on the Nexus 4 forum?

Were they ever away?
Their hardware has already been great, it's just their slow update cycles that swayed me towards Nexus 4.

Just as the Engadget Podcast said.... when was the last time you could remember a hit phone by Sony? Android? Nope sorry. Yes they have tried, but their company is more PS3 and other things focused. Yes maybe they are now realizing that Mobile is THE place to be( a little late there) and hopefully they can get their sh*t together. I love my PS3 and other Sony products but their presence is not felt in the mobile industry, regardless of how good their hardware is. HTC make Beautiful hardware, but even they are sliding off the map...
4 easy step Success recipe for Sony, HTC or any other struggling company:
1.BEAUTIFUL durable, Hardware, make it 4.7( nothing bigger than that)
2.POWERFUL guts like quad core, 1080p display etc,
3.PURE Google Android, with ( people LOVE this! Look at other companies that are doing this, Huwaie, ZTE etc..)
4.Stick to ONE phone and make it your Flagship phone!
5.Guarantee the fastest UPDATES for it besides the Nexus for 2 years!
Done, you will have a hot seller! Oh and market it right, no creepy commercials.

SGS2 vs IPhone 4

Hello guys my carrier is sending me an iPhone 4 but I can't decide to keep it or sell it and buy Sgs2? Cause I had lots of bad experience with apple before. And have x10 now that I'm happy with but want something better and new.

Hm I would sell it and either wait for an iPhone 5 June/July or take the SGS II. It is just about your needs. Big hands and gorgeous screen --> SGS II
Most beautiful apps and polished and awesome build quality: iPhone
decide what you really need and then choose your phone. Making a list should be helpful =)

i like the iphone!
..but you're right
it is like comparing a spork with a drawer full of utensils
SGSII but since it's not out yet, Cappy all the way.
iOS and Android, I will pick Android.
Apple and Samsung, I will pick Apple.
Also.. the iPhone 4 screen shatters with barely a strong glance at the GLASS screen.
Don't mention the word Apple or iPhone on xda. The mentally challenged will come out and bite rabidly. A better place would be HowardForums.
I would sell the iPhone 4 if you are comfortable with an x10. A sealed box will sell for a good price. Then you can wait for the SGS2. The iPhone 5 probably won't be announced until June, which is quite a while. I wouldn't buy anything right now though, since the stuff on the market right now isn't really an upgrade from what you already have.

Wow.
Where's the ignore button.
OP, if you like the SGS2 then wait for it, or wait for iP5 see what apple puts out.
I am doing that right now, between SGS2 or iP5.
Most of the stuff you will get here is android fans, but in reality apple has much better hardware than anything on android (my opinion). The OS, well they are pretty similar, if you want your phone to just work apple all the way, if you want to customized then go android.
Just be aware that iPhone can also be customized by jailbreaking.
I have a 3GS that's almost 2 years old and it's working as good as day one.

Reality and personal opinion don't mix sadly. Anyway, depends what you mean by "hardware". Apple A4 was Samsung's Hummingbird, just with a lower clock and a slower GPU. Overall build quality may be better... until it falls and you're left with cracked glass all over the phone. Antennagate? Not sure about the much better now...
Software and integration is another story, that's where iOS definitely wins.

It's all relative to needs.
Sure, the iP is a pretty piece of hardware backed up but the brand fandom. everyone has it, everyone wants one.
As far as jailbreaking goes, the cat and mouse update/jailbreak game with apple gets old really fast... Every update of iOS patches something that dev team fixes and then they fix it and apple releases another update and .... you get the idea.
Jailbreaking every two months, playing with the unlocked baseband and risking ending up with a brick is no fun.
Personally I've decided to move away from every apple product, because apple doesn't necessarily have the greatest most advanced hardware, what they do have is massive marketing department with lots of talented people to make people want those devices (just look at apple product placement in the media).
In the end, it's a matter of usability, preference and what works for the individual; at this point in time, the iP4 is clearly outdated compared (hardware wise) to the devices coming out right now or in the coming month (Atrix, SGS2, etc...) and they will have had 6-7 months to prepare and get the iP5 design ready and produced by June-July-Sept with better hardware based on what they saw coming out from the competition at the CES and other events. By the time apple is done promoting their revolutionary iP5, Motorola, HTC and Samsuncg will have come up with somthing better based on the iP5 specs...
The cel phone war will never end, it will be the eternal peeing contest between large companies. As far as the consumer is concerned, we're just trapped in a vicious cycle we have created.
For me what weighs in, is the ability to have full control of my device. Therefore iP is a no go and thus a lesser device in my perception. Atrix was on top of the list until the Moto fiasco with the signed bootloader. The remaining option is the SGS2 depending on how easy it will be to update without relying on Samsung to do so.
On a side note, I've been using a iP3G since it came out and haven't upgraded the device, so I've been with it for almost 4 years; and seeing all these new android devices coming out everyday makes me hate it more day by day.
Android, for me, offers many more possibilities of growth than iOS will ever be able give me. I am not limited by a company as far as what I can do with the hardware that I hold in my hands.
I would rather take an operating system that is designed to let me do anything to it per my own needs and requirements than one that is marketed to the masses for mass consumption. There is nothing wrong with either, it is all preference. Apps fail to interest me as I have a busy and fun enough life to not care about too many of them In fact many people around me have pages of apps which i rarely see being launched except for the odd score checking/email app.
There is no point in comparison of the phone. In fact I would like it if Android makes its own features and chooses its direction instead of following iOS.
Well I would say to just use for a little while and see if you like it. If you do, great. If you don't, sell it.
Either way you could sell one now or keep both and sell both layer then the SG2 comes out.
Did anyone get the iPhone reference in Archer? I totally loled

Disappointing? Smaller battery, no fingerprint sensor and no tegra. The battery cover does look better though. I could go both ways on dedicated camera button. Everything else is kind of meh.

yes, a big dissappointment. seems like a step back, not forward in every way. I thought they would do a Photon 4G equivalent with a bigger screen etc? That looks like a great device and an improvement over our atrix. Seems like the Atrix 2 is slower, smaller battery (one of the best selling points on the atrix IMHO) and doesnt make a generation jump to LTE etc.
it does ave 4.3 inch screen
Im going for a Samsung Note next.
Seems to me the business people overrule the tech/specs people.

You would think motorola would capitalize on webtop and create a market for "lapdocks". Their half assed "try" is pitiful. They could create a flagship phone with a higher clocked dual core and two gigs of ram. Hell, as things are, the other gig of ram could be accessible by webtop only so you double data rate and it doesnt eat battery having to power that ram and not utilizing it. Perhaps with ics and the better spec'd phones coming soon something might happen.

I second this, main reason I hated my atrix was cause of the screen, if I can get my hands on one, I would swap it out for my atrix instantly.
The Bionic had an "operational" prototype back in Feb but it just got released this month (and looking completely different with different hardware). The same could be said about this. The battery, the processor, the screen, LTE, design, etc. could all be left to change when this phone actually reaches store shelves. But to even think that Motorola goes through the trouble with testing a device that is this lackluster spec-wise, and is supposed to be a successor, leaves me to believe that their marketing structure is based off of disseminating features/hardware across as many devices as possible to maximize profit which is one of the reasons I will not be buying another Moto phone anytime soon.

I read an article about a new LG phone coming out soon that looks bad ass! Basically the same as atrix but with the new Tegra, they said 1.2 or 1.5. It also had the slide out kb and 1080P recording which is probably pretty standard with new phones now. Nvidia was also saying that we should start seeing quad core phones by end of 1Q 2012. Quite simple for me really, 1)No expandable memory = no no 2)Anyone watching SONY chairman's speech at CES - Ion will be available Internationally from Q3 of this year. Here's to hoping the specs are kept pretty much the same, especially the expandable memory.
the non expandable memory isn't that big of a deal breaker to me.
but i'm waiting for the xperia P for the aluminum case and smaller size.
I would get one right now, if I could find one in the USA. I like it's design more than the Ion. And I like it in white better than the required Ion black.

I will 2nd that. Apple has done a wonderful job at marketing their products.
Yes.Apple 's marketing is one of the best because their products are one year old in features.Nevermind, the fanboys will always be there to defend the bitten fruit.
At the moment the Sony S is the best mobile phone(until the next one).
Just enjoy it.
BUT, when compared to the design of my X10 it is erm, Ug, well not very pretty, with shut lines everywhere and just 'clunky'.
Shame, I was so sure this would be my next phone but having seen it and played with it I am not at all sure..........
However, where else to go?
IF my X10 did not have the infuriating drop out when listening to music via bluetooth and a better in call volume I would not bother...............BUT it has and so a change is required. Just don't know where to go now.
Suggestions (sensible, constructive) welcome.

Shame, I was so sure this would be my next phone but having seen it and played with it I am not at all sure..........

SGS2. HTC One, Nexus?
wait for the S3 maybe ? OR HTC One-X .... My contract is up in May so no rush for anything yet, always better to wait a month or two anyway, ICS should be updated if there are any bug's plus more time for the Dev's to work on some tweaks

The Xperia S is one I really wanted to like but It's not very sleek, more brick like than the X10, camera looks great as does the display though.
Really want to know when the S3 will be released though ....
Nope, I will be waiting for something new like the sgs3.. I have the feeling that phone development is moving with the speed of light since 2011
Send from beneath my cloak of magic
Okay, seriously? There are several aspects of the Xperia S that are substandard, namely the SoC already being old, the screen being (undoubtly) the same from the HTC Rezound (which has some black crush), and the weight being unbalanced. Not only that, it's launching off of the old Android 2.3 platform, while there are already phones launching off of 4.0.x ICS.
The Xperia S is a bit late, for basically being a slimmer Rezound with more onboard memory.
I'm still getting it (since I don't like the Xperia ION), mainly because I like Sony products.

Are you looking forward for IPhone 5 features?

I know we all here are android fan, still i support innovation in the area of Mobile technologies (Although Apple has made me sad due to recent BS they had done with Samsung).

Well, im interested to see what apple have included in the next upgrade! i would never have another iphone though.
I dont think it will be any more powerful than the s3, and from what i have seen it has about half an inch of extra screenage!!
I would be surprised if they unlocked the OS to compete with android and the customisation, but i doubt that will happen!
maybe apple will introduce bluetooth file sharing!!!!!! every other phone has it, why not on iphones? there is a cheap £50 phone at tesco's which texts calls and takes photos. i think its a cheap rubbish Alcatel phone. it has bluetooth.
ah well, ill just stick with what i know and like. Samsung!!!!!
Yes, I expect Iphone 5 to features - 2gb RAM, Quad Cores, 3300mAh battery, 4.65" retina screen and discount 50% for all apps for 2yrs. Is that too much to expect?

Can someone tell me at what GMT time it will start, I want to watch the event. I want to see how they present the so called best phone of the year.
A 4'' phone can have any features, I am not interested. Too small..

yeh im looking forward for iphone 5 but just for interesting. Had iphone 4s, phone maybe isnt so bad, but operating system is totally crap. Couldnt even send files over bluetooth...... android ftw
Here's what I know already:
1) It will still be highly dependant of iTunes.
2) Users will have to wait maybe months for a jailbreak.
3) The OS will basically still look the same as it did in 2007.
4) Still won't be able to backup the device on the memory card (ala cwm).
5) It will still have only one button - no dedicated back or menu keys.
6) You still won't be able to Bluetooth apps / movies / music to other phones.
7) Out of the box it won't just work until it's activated.
8) No removable battery of external memory card support.
9) I could seriously go on and on and on. But I've wasted enough time on crapple.
Please understand, I actually also own an iphone but once you've tasted android, ios is a major pain in the behind. Unless you are a simple person who find it difficult to do anything other than swype left to right.
Man I haven't tinkered with my iPhone since last year. I'm just bored of it and find it cumbersome to do anything on it. Believe me, it works great for messaging and taking / making calls.
I'm still on an older firmware because upgrading would mean hours and hours or restoring and re-downloading hacks, if they still work.
What pisses me off most is all the hype and media attention it gets. The S3 will still be a much better phone but still no media reports about it, on TV at least. Here in Australia all the major news networks have been talking about it's release for a week. Even today there was an ad for the morning news, which will feature the new iphone. Apple have bought out the media I think.

I'm curious about what they have to offer, but I'm not holding my breath.
I hope I'm wrong though, and Apple blows our minds with some awesome innovation and declare it creative commons. Man that'll sure be surprising

Samsung - inspired by nature.

You know how Samsung say they're inspired by nature? One thing's rather peculiar. I don't recall nature being bloated, ugly and sluggish. Or maybe they specifically mean stink bugs, ticks, weeds, etc.. Rather peculiar, don't you think?

This is the first and the last samsung phone, from now on i'm going with nexus.
My first Samsung phone, OEM wise. I had a Gnex before. This is, however, my very last Samsung device. EVER. I will never buy another Faildung device again. Deciding which phone will be my bext is hard, though, because I'm considering either the Xperia Z, HTC One or the next Nexus. Maybe not the HTC after all because I don't feel like messing with locked down bootloaders (unless they're nexii because it's a simple fastboot command to lock/unlock at your will)

I'm quite happy with my samsung. Had the S II before this S III and I guess I like the multitude of roms available. Sure, Samsung needs to get their Exynos sources out in the wild but even without them AOSP, Cyanogenmod and AOKP aren't that bad. Used those type of Roms for a while and never thought I would flash a Samsung based rom again... Until a few weeks ago. You could say there's alot of bloatware in the stock rom and you're absolutely right. On the other hand, some bloat is really "useful". For me personally I really like showing photos and videos directly on my TV without having to open a third party DLNA app. I like how easy it is to root and unroot everything back to stock. I like my external SD card, removable battery. I like how their phones feel in my hand. My girlfriend has an Xperia S and although I kinda like the design, it just doesn't feel right in the hand nor are the menu and back button easy to touch. I think the S4 with a Snapdragon or Exynos with sources will be the perfect phone. Gonna hold on to my S III for the time being or till I have one of my impulsive buying sprees.
Personally, I don't really "get" the Nature bit. Bit of a Marketing thing, differentiation and all that USP stuff.
I'm actually quite happy with the S3. I've a later one, mind. I've never had any funny reboots whatever firmware I used, never had any marks or cracks and the battery life on a Stock or Stock based ROM is rather good.
My primary likes are:
Good sound, great FM radio (I use this a lot due to a serious walking regime - I'm probably of a similar age to one of you other guys). The call quality and general signal sensitivity (GPS/FM/Cell/WiFi/BT) are really good. The notification LED is a real boon too - not having to wake the phone to see missed activity or see something come in during a meeting is fantastic.
The screen is truly oleophobic AND scratch-resistant - I hate screen protectors - they're hard to fit properly and look sh1t quickly.
They hold their value well if looked after cosmetically.
In a word then it is reliable - and eminently modifiable.
The things I dislike are:
The screen is just not bright enough outside even without direct sunlight. Hopelessly dim. This is the biggy for me - walking whilst outside and trying to read anything is just a joke.
The Samsung software is cobbled together, and feels so. Fortunately I remove most of it, but the core is still there... and their non-open source approach and lack of engagement with their development community is a "shame".
A soft gel case is a necessity or you will drop it. I never have. Touch wood.
The accessories supplied are 2nd rate. Belies the cost of the phone.
Replacing the screen and digitizer as a unit (the only real way to do it) is f.expensive (I did a mate's - £150)
I would buy another Samsung, I had the SGS2 and that was good for its time too. My wife's 2 yo Omnia 7 is also reliable and she has had no issues with that either. My eldest daughter's Xperia S has started losing pixels. My youngest daughter's HTC ONE S is totally stock and has randomly rebooted from new for no obvious reason. And this is the 4th Amazon BNIB replacement. It looks like crap too after a few weeks as the black finish is brittle.
Problem is, what else is there?
S4 - unknown quantity (might not have an FM Radio, might be Snapdragon or not), £600 and being an early adopter means beta tester.
HTC ONE - even if you can get hold of one, too early to tell if they are reliable or durable and the modding potential is not great.
Nexus 4 - No FM radio and LG not the world's best phone designer
Sony Z - good but odd in the hand and screen dim - massive development potential though thanks to Sony.
LG Optimus G - not readily available, too expensive, no FM radio and no development community and Billy Bland.
Note 2 - get real. S3 on acid with a silly stick, has its own identity crisis.
I would like the OPPO Find 5 - but not available and may not have an FM Radio or LED notification. Or development potential. I have an OPPO Blu-Ray player that is utterly fantastic. For those that remember, like a Nakamichi tape deck style quality.

With the current discussions going on in the general thread (eels, lube, etc.) I don't think many dare entering, or even stay after they've entered so I thought I'd liven the place up a bit.
