Make the capacatative touch controls stay on?

Any setting/way to make an app or hack for them to stay on for longer? It's so annoying that they turn off!

Oh man, I'm getting REALLY annoyed by that. It's bad enough that you can only turn the screen on to use the phone by using the power button that is in such a stupid position.
I'm really starting to miss the Home button on my iPhone.

Actually any of the 3 hard buttons will wake the phone so you can use vol up and down as well

The volume keys aren't waking up mine.

you had me excited for a second... Volume keys do not work on mine to wake the phone.

Same only three power lock key worked and I wish there was a setting to have the lights on ask the time screen is on

Right. Vol keys don't wake the phone. It would be nice in theory, but adjusting volume (listening to music) with the phone in your pocket would then wake the phone and possibly allow the screen to unlock. I know that's a bit of a stretch, but being a touchscreen right next to your leg.....it could easily happen.

I can't believe there isn't a setting for this. The lights turn off too quickly. There should've been a low-power 'Always On W/Screen' option.
I wish they would've opted for hardware buttons, to be honest. That way, you can at least feel them out in the dark.
I'm new to the Android development scene, but would it be possible for someone to develop a market app to address the issue?

Why did the US carrier phones had the Home button removed.
Now they are incompatible with the regular Galaxy S firmware, and are hard to use in the dark.
Just stupid.
But 4 hard buttons are not a good solution either. A large Home button is.

I like the idea of a single hard button (the N1 trackball, the iPhone home button, the Galaxy S home button), and I agree: it was a stupid decision to remove that button.

dude, stop whining like a lil biscuit. the power button as screen on/off method is fabulous and quick. Loving the 4 touch buttons. Yes I understand the lights go off quite quickly but don't worry, i already have and you will also remember their position.

Power Button on top of the phone is more ergonomic.
Big Home Button is also more ergonomic and you don't have to "remember" it.
I think the US carriers wanted space to slap their branding, so they removed the large Home button. Plus, the 4 buttons make it harder to use international firmware, which will likely advance faster than the US-only versions.

Faulty volume button.

Has anybody have the same problem I have with the DHD volume button? My device has the bottom part of the button jutting out a little bit, and I am worried it might fall off. I have only had this phone for 2 and a half weeks, so before considering an exchange, has anybody had the problem and fixed it? I would hate to take the button off and not be able to put it back on properly.

I had the same problem. I sent mine back to Phones4u after about a week.
Whether it would have fallen off or not, I don't know - but as mine was like that after a week or so I didn't want to take any chances.

Mine's the same, it's going back when vodafone get more stock.
I also noticed the top of the screen clicks and creaks as if its loose.
Mine is the openmarket version and vodafone only have the branded handsets in stock anyone know the difference?

Hi all,
I've my phone about a month now and I have almost the same problem with the volume button.
Actually it isnt that bad as the pictures above but you can definetally feel that the vol-down button sticks a litle bit out while the vol-up is very hard to press.
(The powerbutton is also hard to press but that seems to be with everyones phone)
It seems HTC is very bad in making hardware buttons, I had also button problems with my Touch HD and my HD2!
What do you recommend me? Should I return it or not?
Ps for htc maybe:
The main reason why htc makes hard to press (power) buttons is to avoid acitentally turning the device on/off while its in your pocket or wathever.
I have a solution, make good easy to press CAPACTIVE (power) HARDWARE buttons.
I think that should solve a lot of problems

The bottom bit of the volume button comes out a bit too on mine but not that far!

Based on the images he posted somethings clearly wrong with it. The buttons not set in the device properly at all.

From the pictures, i had the exact same problem. On day one, i was so happy to have the phone i looked passed it ( it was the very slightest bit sticking out ), then eventually a week later it really started coming loose, when you press volume up for example the bottom of the button would literally pop out and dangle.
In the end i arranged for a replacement the next day as i was illegible as i only had, had the phone for a week. What struck me is the elastics holding the volume rocker in place? thats the last thing i'd expect something made out of "metal" to be locking it in place.

i have the same problem. the volume rocker is not sticking to much out but you can definitely feel the difference between the upper and the lower side of the button. the upper side is like pushed in and kind of hard to press and you don't fell the "click" when you push the vol up. the lower side i slightly sticking out but you can fell the "click" when you push the vol down.
how do yours fell when pushing vol up?
i don't know if i should replace the device or not???

I returned mine and I think you should too.
Works perfectly now, but not sure if it can last 20 months as my old one broke so early. Taking the greatest of care whilst touching the volume rocker now. Kinda sad that a device so expensive has quite a few cosmetic flaws.

Exact same issue with mine i dabbed some super glue ont he plastic and the metal. Its alot better now. Seen new buttons on ebay, has anyone tried these yet? How do you install them?

In the picture you attached, the volume key lok in the correct place. However, the Aluminum or battery cover is not in the correct shape. I can see some distortion.

[Q] Power Button - do you press it by accident much?

For those of you who own it and use it often, the simple question is whether the placement of the power button gets in your way?
I am right-handed and thus hold tablets in my left hand to poke at it with my right hand. Since I don't own one yet, I haven't had much experience with day to day use and whether 'just grabbing it' often results in hitting the power button accidentally.
As well as whether when you have it in your lap or on something (backpack, lap, blanket, whatever) if the items underneath, assuming they are not perfectly flat, accidentally hit the power button as well.
My hope is that since I don't see many/any posts dedicated to the subject.. that it's good news and the power button isn't that big of a deal.

The biggest issue you may have with the buttons placement is when you have the device on a flat surface, it requires you to lift the top left of the Xoom to hit the button. Personally, this hasn't bothered me at all. I barely just have my device laying flat on a table, usually it rests in my lap or my hands.
But I can almost assure you, problems with accidentally hitting the button probably will not arise.
I do have a gel case on mine though, but i just took it off to test this for you:
Running my finger across the back of the Xoom with decent pressure still won't cause the button to be pushed in when my finger crosses it.
So resting it in your lap wouldn't cause an accidental push.
And if it does for whatever reason, a gel case would do good to counteract that since it makes the button deeper down. but the way its set up, you really should see no problem.

Agreed! I most of the time actually have to search for the button especially when using the trick to turn it upside-down when charging. I think the design is good and I agree that I hardly have it laying flat either since the viewing angles are mediocre

My beef is with the volume buttons. Too tiny. The power button is high enough that it avoids accidental contact with hand during one handed operation.

Agree'd, it took me about this whole first week to get use to these volume buttons. They are kind of hard to press in depending on the angle you're coming at them, and the Case makes it harder because you're unsure when you're trying to hit the buttons it you're actually hitting the buttons because of the huge space between them.

I like it where it is. It's very convenient.

Couldn't be in a better place, very convenient, for me.

I have never accidentally pressed it, I actually like it's placement quite a bit, it makes sense for me because of where I hold the tablet from.

1st post here!!! Great forum BTW. No problems at all with hitting the power button by mistake. Xoom is a great device. Needs a little polishing, but all in all a great device!

I have never once hit it by accident. I've also never had any trouble pressing or finding it when I DID want to. After a day of getting used to it, it really is an extremely natural position to have it in.
Yes, the one inconvenience is if it's lying flat on a surface, and you intend on turning the screen on and then leaving it in that position. Really though, when is this ever going happen?
This is Android though. So if the ability to fully map one of the volume buttons (on the upper-left side of the xoom) to turn the screen on/off doesn't already exist (via an app or ROM), you can bet it will soon. I've seen forum threads with titles suggesting such an app already exists, but I've never looked for it myself bc I don't think it's necessary

I like the location of the Power button and have never had issue.

[Q] Home Key problem - is it just mine?

When I press the home key it doesnt always work. i noticed that if i press it lightly (as much as I used to on the S2) It doesnt work, it still clicks in but its only if I press it a little harder that it actually functions. Does anyone else have this problem or is it just me ans I need to get used to give it a good old press each time?

I can't press mine so light.. It's pretty stiff so when it moves it moves and always works

mine is working normally. One click press tha'ts it no hard press required. Maybe it's better to check other functions as well in the phone and return the piece. coz i have seen many SIII pieces had hardware problems. i actually had a same problem but with power button and i returned my SIII and got a new one from phones4u Now everything is working perfect. Hope that helps.::

Loose buttons?

Just wondering if anyone has slightly loose buttons. As in, if I tap them lightly I get a tiny metal on plastic sound as if it the button itself wasn't attached to the sensor on the inside.
I'd like to have a perfect device but I'm afraid of RMAing and getting a screen issue or something worse.

Yeah I noticed that too, not really an issue. Also if you press lightly on the power button wothout activating it you can feel it spring back...just an fyi

is the volume button springy as well? just trying to make sure I got a defect-free phone. I haven't had a phone yet with springy side buttons. Seems like they might not last that long??

Not like the power button.

Mine are loose as well but I think it's common across many devices. I've had loose volume and power buttons on my Note 4, Moto X 2014, and even the HTC One M9. I've checked on these occasionally and have been told that a little "play" in the buttons is normal.
