[Q] Expecting a port of this OS on my Nexus 4. Do You ? - Sailfish General

Jolla released it's Sailfish OS SDK some time ago and I'm expecting it to be ported on my Phone. Is anyone here to do this ?

I'm not really good at porting, but it should be easy. The 3 problems are
kernel
HW accel with GPU
Touchscreen
The first one is really easy since if you cannot run a Mer stock / customized UI, you can still take Android one.
For the second, it is the trickiest, but you can still use mesa-llvmpipe (no HW accel, but only software)
For the thirst point, it is up to the screen manufacturer. Some provides linux drivers, some do not. But for Android, it might be highly probable that a driver is provided.

We will check if it works. Maybe the support for the HW in the Nexus 4 is good ...
But for the Nexus 7, it is nearly sure that it works. Something similar (Ubuntu) were ported on it ...

Has Google still not been able to release all the source code for the Nexus 4?
Disgusting if so.

You mean Ubuntu for Tablets? If so then the Nexus 4 should also possibly be able to get a Sailfish port. They release Ubuntu for Phones on the Nexus 4 the same day the UfT port was released for the N7.

Bump.
It's been 9 months since the last post on a Nexus 4 port of SailfishOS. Has someone brought this baby to term? Anyone know if there's an ongoing effort?

There is no sources or devices released. Theres only the x86 based sdk. So what do you can be ported? The x86 sdk to arm cpu? Never. And the Sailfish ui is proprietary so sources wont be released. If you want Mer with the default ui, sources can be downloaded from the Mer-projects website

Canonical releases Ubuntu Phone OS

Canonical just announced their mobile OS called Ubuntu Mobile
Now, you're probably wondering why I put this in the GNex general.
Let me tell you.
The dev phone at this phase for UM is the one and only, Galaxy Nexus.
As seen here: http://www.engadget.com/2013/01/02/ubuntu-for-smartphones/
And in pretty much every picture of it on http://www.ubuntu.com/devices/phone
I made this thread for discussion, speculation and the likes
So, how long do you think until the first build is avalable for us?
UPDATE: Everything we know so far (basic information and release times) are here:

Official instructions for installation (You need to have a Ubuntu/compatable Linux distribution installed):

For people wondering about install (tried with TWRP):
1. Nandroid backup
2. Factory Reset
3. Grab quantal-preinstalled-armel+maguro.zip (MD5: e4c9c5601019ec7ce24f43f317361982) and quantal-preinstalled-phablet-armhf.zip (MD5: edd3c43909a6e73ac254b2673d40cc53) from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/ubuntu-touch-preview/quantal/mwc-demo/
4. Flash quantal-preinstalled-armel+maguro.zip
5. Flash quantal-preinstalled-phablet-armhf.zip (this one will take a while, grab some coffee :laugh
6. Reboot (screen will go black but after a few seconds Ubuntu is up)
7. Profit :highfive:
This install didn't wiped my sdcard. I just restored my TWRP backup after a short Ubuntu testdrive.
If you are paranoid, just copy your stuf from SDCARD to your PC before flashing.

It's easy.
You can either restore the Nandroid backup you made earlier (assuming you followed the instructions all the way) or just flash a ROM. It's as easy as that.

This actually looks better than android to me! CANT WAIT
As already teased and promised, today Canonical is taking the wraps off the mobile version of Ubuntu, which is built around the existing Android kernel and drivers, but doesn't use a Java Virtual Machine and promises to use "the full power of the phone." Supporting both ARM and x86 processors, the Ubuntu phone OS will be compatible enough to let Android phone makers run it on their devices with minimal adaptation.

Glad to see the market moving towards unifying our devices. My only hesitancy is that I use Google Voice for SMS and calls, though no VOIP. I'd need support for that and I'd have to see if Ubuntu One can rival Google Music (or if Google Music will find its way over). Since Voice and Music have both found their way over to iOS in various forms, I'm hopeful and excited. Ubuntu already has good integration with most Google services and it's all Linux so I'm optimistic for support.
That looks so beautiful! I'm not very knowledgeable with this project so I have a question, will it be able to possibly run android applications native or is going to be huge different overhaul of an OS.
edit: NVM, it would appear as if not after reading through their site a bit... But do feel free to tell me.

Plus, you can find some video with the N950 running sailfish. As the N950 have the same hardware as the N9 so it is compatible.

There'll eventually be a community port of Sailfish*, don't expect it to be very reliable/slick though, there'll be some things that never work properly.
This has all been explained time & time again, I'm not going into the back story as-to-why all this is true, the information is out there.
*not Jolla's flavour, just the stock version of Sailfish, which means it'll be quite bare-bones compared Jolla's Sailfish (initially anyway).

Just to clarify things.
There is this company called Jolla. They make this operating system called SailfishOS which in fact is Mer.
So what is Mer? Mer is an operating system without hardware layer and UX. This means it's useless because it won't run on any hardware. You need the hardware layer which means drivers und you probably need the UX which means the GUI. This 3 parts together give you an operating system that you can use on your hardware. An example of this is SailfishOS.
If you take Mer and add the Hardware layer for the Jolla device and then the Sailfish Silica UI you get SailfishOS. The only other iteration of SailfishOS which exists is the one with the hardware layer for the Nokia N950. This will never be released as an official or supported Version.
So for all you guys waiting for a port of SailfishOS for device xyz. This won't happen. There is only one thing that could possible become reality and that's a leaked, unsupported beta image of SailfishOS for the Nokia N950/N9. Maybe this image will be the same which we saw in early demos of SailfishOS.
So the rule is as follows:
Even if you get all the linux drivers (not Android) for Mer so that you could possibly run Mer on your device you still need the UX. Jolla won't give you their Sailfish UI. You could use the Nemo mobile UI that is similar to it but the Sailfish UI will only be available on official Jolla devices.
But let's dream a little bit. If you really get Linux drivers for your device xyz and the Jolla device is out there and it has nearly the same hardware as your device it could be possible that you take all the packages that contain the Sailfish Silica UI and install them on your own device with Mer and your own hardware layer. This is possible in theory. In reality I don't think we will see a usable port that can be your daily driver.
An exchange which should help folks understand why there's no images*: http://pastie.org/private/lgldc4h3dikjkqc9nxecaq
They've said once they have one or more devices shipping, they'll probably start to open Sailfish much more, but not a minute before, for several reasons.
But that doesn't mean they'll also start to support images for 3rd-party devices, they'll probably never do that to the degree Canonical does, see the above.
*original source for that pastie

For real? or just your wish?
Is there an ETA?
Is there an ETA on when someone could make some early progress on this project? I'm worried that people are losing so much interest that a preview version of Sailfish running on the N9 might be a great idea to get people wanting more of the Meego successor.
That way, people would be falling in love with Sailfish and since it would have a significant spec-bump over the N9, people would be willing to buy it for the screen/display improvement, the "other half," and the great UI.

As always "when it's done". Please stop asking for ports. Just wait until Jolla came out with there first device. I'm sure there will be ports and adaptions all over the place once the Software gets in the hands of the right guys. And this community or t.m.o is prbably the first place to know it. But asking for it every second won't let that happen earlier.

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2342102
Hi, i want to share this post from a Jolla engineer giving tips to start porting Sailfish:
I'm pretty sure I phrased it a bit different So, both the N900 and N9 have the problem of having binary blobs, which Jolla is not allowed to distribute, and almost certainly never will be. The N9 additionally has the problem of having an older kernel than the N900 -- old enough that it's starting to cause problems. That's the reason why I probably mentioned N900.
As for Nemo and N9, Nemo is a community followup project of MeeGo, and as such inherited basic N9 hardware adaptation, and the right to redistribute those binary blobs. So, if you as user take a Nemo image and put Jolla stuff in there it works -- but we as Jolla can't do that.
Another problem is that the old N9 adaptation is based on X11, while we are using Wayland. We do have a proof of concept Wayland stack up on N9 (available through Nemo as well), but it has its fair shair of problems.
That we're using Wayland makes your suggestion of porting Sailfish libraries to Harmattan hard as well: Harmattan is an X11 stack (same in the different direction: you can't use a Harmattan binary on Sailfish. If you have the source porting is trivial -- unless it's using meegotouch. But if you only have a binary it won't run. In theory something hacking with xwayland might be possible, but that's pretty crazy, and a sailfish port/rewrite would almost certainly be the better option)
So, it should be pretty clear by now that we will not do N9 images. What needs to happen for community to be able to do the port? Easy: Get involved in Nemo. I mentioned that several times, though so far nobody showed interest.
It's mainly 3 areas that need work:
- finish port to the 3.5 kernel we started. The required tasks are in Nemos Bugzilla
- start fixing bugs in the Wayland proof-of-concept for N9
- reverse engineer hardware components where no driver exists, and do drivers (like GPS)
So, it's a hard task, but not impossible. The Nemo community and Jolla provided a very good starting point with Nemo, now it's up to community members to step up, and continue.

How to achieve a port (noob guide by noob)

It is a rather shameless blog post advertisement, but I wrote that article for you guys, who are asking about ports and compatible phones. You can read the whole blog post to learn how Mer works, what is needed to run Mer / Nemo / Sailfish on your device.
http://sfietkonstantin.wordpress.co...h-mer-nemo-sailfish-the-noob-guide-by-a-noob/
You can already get familiar with the tools, in preparation of Sailfish launch. It is said that the ARM bits will come one day, so it can be sure that there will be ports.
Here is the important entry in the FAQ I wrote:
Q: I want to get Sailfish running on <put a phone here> !
As you can see, Sailfish is based on Mer, and Mer do not provide hardware adaptation bits. So first, you need to get informed on how the hardware you have can be managed. X86 hardware is basically managed, but for ARM it is harder. The most important part is GPU. Does the GPU manufacturer provides Linux drivers (for Linux distributions). Does it provides driver that is compatible with X11 ? If yes, then it might be possible to get Sailfish running on that hardware. But it is not as easy. See the following video, with nemo.

once again, currently only emulator image available.
emulator image runs inside VirtualBox ofc you can run it on bare metal, but it is emulator.
there is only home screen, no phone app, no contacts, no browser. only use of it is to write your own application and test on it.
Jolla phone i`m sure is ARM based so waiting half year until images for ARM will be available.
and then....... it will be possible to run Jolla UI on Mer compatible device.
Jolla not showing much . . .
What worries me is that Jolla is not showing much in the way of software, which makes porting more of an issue. How many times can you demo the ambiance feature before someone asks: "Where's the beer?" Where is the browser? There is never very much hands-on with the media getting to use it. What about gaming support? What native apps should we anticipate?

Porting Sailfish OS

So, with the recent news of a port of Sailfish to the Nexus 4, I've been thinking. Does anyone know what it would take to port this OS? Does anyone here know the system well enough to be able to describe what it would entail to port this to another Nexus device, like the Nexus 5?
To clarify, I'm not asking anyone else to port the OS (though if someone would like to, that's fine), because I'm more than happy to do the work for it. I've just never actually ported anything like a completely new OS, so I don't know what it would involve and I'd like it if someone explained or even gave a rough outline of what would need to be done.

There's a rough guide in one entry. Basically you need to build CM from source, apply libhybris patches and then set up Mer on top of it. When you get Mer running it should be easy to install Sailfish packages. Libhybris is a compatibility layer for Android drivers to work on normal linux. Good luck and let us know how it goes. I had troubles with building Mer image for my device. In the video you mentioned it looks like the whole patch+Mer+ sailfish packages is this second prepared zip he flashes.

Not yet; I've been busy working with other things. Though it looks like we're in pretty good shape so far because the recent Ubuntu Touch builds have been getting doing some good work for Mer on the Nexus 5, so hopefully we can use that progress. I just haven't found the time to work on this yet, unfortunately.

I think SF is a really promising OS more so than Firefox is, tizen, and I think more polished than Ubuntu phone. I can't wait to start developing for it so I really want to port it when I get my laptop back. Nice thing is if you use Qt you can basically just write one app that will natively run on Ubuntu and SailFish

I agree completely. It's sad that it hasn't seen a bigger leap in development, but I hope that it'll pick up sooner rather than later. I was just reading earlier today about Qt, which is pretty nifty if you ask me. Hopefully I'll find some time this week to actually make progress on it.

I tweeted Jolla asking if there was now an arm image within the SDK instead of just a x86 one and they told me that there is so that will take care of one major issue.
Android One port
Hi there! I'm not sure if this is where I can ask but I will, just to make sure. Could it be possible for someone to please port Sailfish OS to the Android One devices? They share nearly identical hardware (only differences are in storage).
Here are the specs:
Processor: Mediatek MT6582M 1.3GHz Quad Core ARM Cortex-A7 CPU
GPU: Mali-400 MP2
RAM: 1GB
Camera: 5.0 MP Autofocus Back Camera with LED Flash; 2.0 MP Front Camera
Storage: 4/8 GB (varies; categorized into sprout4 and sprout8 devices, respectively)
MicroSD: 32 GB max caapacity
Sim: Dual Micro
Network: 3G HSPA+, 2G EDGE and GPRS; Wi-Fi
Bluetooth: 4.0 with LE support
Location sensor: GPS with A-GPS
FM Radio
Ports: MicroUSB 2.0, 3.5mm audio jack
Other sensors: Gyroscope, Accelerometer, Ambient Light Sensor
Battery: 1,780mAh Li-ion
Don't worry about the MediaTek processor hampering sources, check Google repos for code. Also sources are updated frequently.
I want to experience Sailfish on my phone and likely other fellow Android One users. Minimal modifications necessary for sprout8-specific patches.

Nexus 5X - Windows 10 [Port][Leak]

The Google–LG masterminded device has all the hardware needed to make an example of the platform. After all, the smartphone is spec'd close to the Microsoft Lumia 950, complete with the same Qualcomm Snapdragon 808 chipset. The Lumia 950, however, has a Quad-HD resolution AMOLED display and more RAM memory.
Unfortunately, we have absolutely no idea where you can get your hands on a Windows 10 ROM or launcher for the Nexus 5x. The operating system hasn't been made publicly available, Microsoft won't be porting it to a non-Lumia device anytime soon (although Xiaomi handset owners might be in for a surprise), and the video is ripe with mistification as a whole.

Pretty interesting. Hoping more details would come out soon.
Interesting
Sent from my Nexus 5X using Tapatalk
This would be pretty cool in combination with multirom
Indeed it will. Dual boot is required >.>
Any information when it will be available?
It's in MS hands to enable it on any device isn't it?
Sent from my Nexus 5X using XDA-Developers mobile app
Not sure why I would want this. Isn't Windows 10 dead on mobile?
Any news on this ? :fingers-crossed:
Imagine, Sailfish OS full-support with GApps and then dualbooted with this. Wow.
Download of this rom available ?????
Does anyone have the slightest idea on how they went about porting this rom? Did they just say screw it, and flash the rom from the Xiaomi Mi4, or would they have had to do any significant modifications beyond slight stuff, such as changing around build.prop and like files?

It's Windows. No modifications needed on a per-device basis. But you might need to replace the bootloader with a BIOS...

Are you sure? IMO it doesn't work this way on smartphones.
Interesting
Sounds interesting but it could take a lot of storage though..

Ik that. But unless they've patches Windows to read kernel booting, then it would need a BIOS. You're probably right, it probably doesn't need that and can support it.
i might out looking for this rom for future
Windows 10 Mobile needs UEFI so...we don't have that here so we have to emulate it. Lumia 950 has the same SoC so it is posibile in someway to get it working on 5X.
